JUSTIN THOMAS BROWN

Mr. Justin Thomas Brown, age 44, of280 James Caviness Road, Siler City, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church in Bennett, with Rev. Mark Strickland and Rev. Neal Jackson officiating.

Mr. Brown was born in Conway, SC, and had retired as a bridge repairman with the NC Department of Transportation. He loved to hunt, fish, and spend time at the beach. Mr. Brown also loved riding his motorcycle. He was preceded in death by his sons, Trevor-Tate and Zimiriah Brown.

Survivors include his wife, Teressa Jordan Brown of the home; sons, Chris Brown, Trent Brown, Curtis Brown of Siler City; mother, Barbara Brady of Asheboro; father, Richard Brown and step-mother Anne of Pittsboro; sister, Holly Brown Hussey and husband Jonathan of Robbins; step-sister, Debbie Mullis of Lexington; step-brothers, Billy Leviner and wife Sheila of Chapel Hill, Andy Leviner and wife Lisa of Chapel Hill, and John Leviner of Lexington.

Visitation was held Tuesday, June 3, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel, 3833 Chatham Street, Bennett, and other times at the home of Holly and Jonathan Hussey at 632 Caviness Town Road in Robbins.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to: Joyce-Brady Chapel, P.O. Box 89, Bennett, NC 27208to help with funeral expenses.

Joyce-Brady Chapel is serving the Brown Family.

COLIE E. “BUD” DUNN
Colie Elbert “Bud” Dunn, 87, of Ramseur, died Sunday, (05-25-2014) at Randolph Hospice House in Asheboro.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, (05-28-2014) at Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City with Rev. John Gunter officiating.

Bud was a native of Chatham County, a retired car salesman and attended West End United Methodist Church in Siler City. He was preceded in death by his parents, J. B. and Rosa Oliver Dunn.

Surviving is his wife, Faye Cheek Dunn.

Memorials may be made to, Randolph County Honor Guard in honor of Robert Kisely, PO Box 1672, Asheboro, NC 27204, or to Hospice of Randolph County, PO Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204.

TERRENCE PAUL WARD
Mr. Terrence Paul Ward, 78, of Sanford, died Monday, (05-26-2014), at Central Carolina Hospital.

No services or visitation is planned.

He was born on August 23, 1935, in Lanesmill, PA to the late Joseph Paul Ward and Amber Barraclough Ward. Mr. Ward was a former employee of the Sanford Herald, and served his country in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Jean Palmer Ward; sons, Brian Ward, Gregory Ward, both of Sanford; daughters, Barbara Jamison of Brockway, PA, Terri Spears of Sanford: brothers, Mike Ward of Sanford, Gary Ward of Williamsport, PA; sisters, Gail Kessler and Romaine Ward, both of Sanford, and Vicky Siberling of DuBois, PA; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

CHARLES WALTER HERSEY
Charles Walter Hersey, 77, of Cameron, died Thursday, (05-22-2014) at Manor Care in Pinehurst.

A private funeral service was held Tuesday, (05-27-2014), with Pastor William Beasley presiding. Entombment followed with military honors.

He was born inYork, PA, November 6, 1936, to the late Woodrow Wilson Hersey and Olivia Keesey Hersey. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a great grandson, Christian Long and a brother, Don Hersey. Mr. Hersey was retired from the US Army.

Survivors include his step-mother, Ethel Wayne of PA; wife, Joyce Elaine Bollinger Hersey of the home; sons, Charles E. Hersey of Fayetteville, Terry Hersey of Cameron; daughters, Janet McQuaiq, Lolita Hunt, both of Cameron, Teresa Furmage of Parkton; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

LULA STINSON WELCH
Lula Belle Stinson Welch, 88, of Leesburg, Virginia died Sunday, May 18, 2014 in Leesburg.

Lula was a native of Goldston and a longtime resident of the Washington, D.C.area. She came to work for the F.B.I. in the Identification Bureau during WW II, after graduating from Goldston High School at the age of 17. She retired after 14 years of service to focus on her career as a loving wife and mother. Lula was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence L. (Larry) Welch; parents, Cary and Lydia Gaines Stinson; brothers, Glen, Tom and Horace Stinson; sisters, Estelle Marsh, Polly Wicker, Fannie Hamer and Oppie Couch.

Survivors include her two daughters, Sandra Welch Cooke and Brenda Welch Nemec, a son-in-law, Donald Nemec; three grandsons, Christopher McElroy, Michael McElroy and Daniel Nemec; three great-grandsons, Liam McElroy, Zander Nemec, Landon Nemec; and a brother, Charles Harden Stinson.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at Smith and Buckner, Saturday, May 31, 2014. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. 4 at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City with Rev. Jim Wall officiating. Burial will follow in the Goldston Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Goldston Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 35, Goldston, NC 27252.

A Celebration of the Life of Anne Haluska will be held Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Meroney United Methodist Church, Hwy 902 West, Pittsboro.

TURNER HARGROVE
Marion”Turner” Hargrove, Sr., 68, of Siler City died Thursday, May 15, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Mr. Hargrove was born in Alamance County on August 16, 1945, the son of the late Byron and Paige (Lewis) Hargrove. He was a graduate of Silk Hope High School and Nashville Auto Diesel College, Nashville, TN. Turner’s lifelong career was in the logging and timber industry and he was the long time owner/operator of Turner Hargrove Wood Products, Inc. He enjoyed gardening, farming, operating his sawmill, and volunteering at Silk Hope Old Fashion Farmers’ Day. He loved afternoons at the shop with his buddies and being surrounded by his family at home. He was a baptized Believer and attended Rocky River Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of almost 32 years, Cheryl (Moon) Hargrove; son, Turner Hargrove, Jr. and wife Pam of Siler City; grandchildren, Luke and Ashton Hargrove; sisters, Sandra H. Johnson and husband Linny of Beaufort, SC, Beverly H. Williams and husband Mark of Elon; nephews, Quinn Johnson and Cameron Scott; mother-in-law, Rochelle Moon; and brother-in-law, Gary Moon. He also leaves behind his faithful canine companion Rusty.

The family received friends Saturday, May 17, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City.

The funeral was held Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Rocky River Baptist Church, with Rev. Brian Biggers officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Rocky River Baptist Church Building Fund or Bus Fund, 4436 Siler City-Snow Camp Road, Siler City, NC 27344or UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of UNC Cancer Hospital, and Pam Hargrove and the staff of UNC Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.

LINDA LOWE McPHERSON
Linda Lowe McPherson, 70, of Sam Lowe Road, Siler City died Friday, May 16, 2014 at her residence.

Mrs. McPherson was born in Chatham County on April 7, 1944, the daughter of Samuel Bryant and Janiece (Keller) Lowe. Linda was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church and the Samaritan Class. She was retired from the Chatham County School System as a cafeteria worker where she had worked at Silk Hope, Jordan Matthews and Pittsboro. Linda enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens, cooking, trips to the mountains, being caregiver to her family and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Jimmy McPherson; two daughters, Tina M. Fogleman and husband David, Lisa M. Hart and husband Jonathan; sister, Shirley Williams and husband Bobby; brothers, Wayne Lowe and wife Pat, James Lowe and wife Sylvia, all of Siler City; grandchildren, Brenton Hart, Ashlyn Hart and Caleb Fogleman.

A memorial service was held Monday, May 19, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Piney Grove United Methodist Church, 2343 Piney Grove Church Road, Siler Citywith Rev. Jim Folks officiating. The family was at the home and received friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either Piney Grove United Methodist Church, Hospice of Randolph or West Chatham Relay for Life.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home is assisting the family.

THOMAS WILLIAM MOSES

Thomas William “Sonny” Moses, 85, passed away Wednesday May 14, 2014 at The Laurels of Chatham County in Pittsboro.

A native of Chatham County, Sonny was born April 23, 1929 to the late Obed William Moses and Annie Maude Moses. He was married to Faye Harris in 1955. He honorably served in the U.S. Army, helping to build roads while stationed in Korea. This rugged outdoorsman spent most of his life working as a logger. Sonny loved reading western novels, listening to country music, and was a huge Richard Petty/NASCAR fan. In fact, he and Faye would spend their honeymoon together watching the 1955 Daytona Beach Grand National. He and Faye were married for 58 years. Many great memories were made with family trips to Disney World, Windy Hill Beach, spending time on Lake Tillery and taking various bus tours throughout the U.S.

In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by his sisters, Imogene Byrum, Mary Alice Moses, and his brother, Jerry Mathiesen Moses. He is survived by his wife, Faye; his daughters, Renee Moses Ellis and spouse Jim Ellis of Ramseur, Tamra Moses Farris and spouse Ron Farris of Swansboro; and his grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Ellis, Tiffany Lane Ellis, Gabrielle Lane Farris and Alexie Jules Farris.

A service to honor his life was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2014 at Hall-Wynne funeral service in Pittsboro, with the Rev. Jerry Sanders and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. A reception followed.

Memorials may be made to Solid Rock Baptist Church, 3903 US 64 West, Pittsboro, NC 27312. Flowers are also welcome.

The arrangements for Mr. Moses were under the care of Hall – Wynne funeral service and Cremation of Pittsboro.

FRANCES MURCHISON HARRIS
Frances Murchison Harris, 94, of South Main Street, Goldston, died Saturday, May 17, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Harris was born in Pittsboro on April 20, 1920, the daughter of James and Iola (Jenks) Brown.Frances was a member of Goldston United Methodist Church and was retired from the Chatham County schools as a cafeteria employee. She loved doing Find the Word, enjoyed her family and home and was a loving Mother. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, William Harold Murchison, Edward M. Harris, Jr. and a grandson, William Kevin Johnson.

She is survived by one daughter, Ann Gail M. Johnson of Durham; one son, Bill Murchison and wife Lydia of Goldston; grandchildren, Larry Johnson, Bryan Johnson, Kim Gierok, Chris Manring and Stephanie Mashburn; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; step-children, Eddie Harris of Raleigh, Gene Harris and Camille H. Cunnup, both of Goldston; and three step-grandchildren.

The family received friends Monday, May 19, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Goldston United Methodist Church, 185 Hillcrest Avenue, Goldston. A graveside service followed in Goldston Cemetery with Rev. Thomas Simpson officiating.

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home assisted the Harris Family.

REBECCA STRAUGHAN McFARLAND
1928—2014

Rebecca Straughan McFarland of Greensboro passed away May 19, 2014 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Mr. Neill Alexander McFarland, Jr.

Additional surviving family includes daughter, Caroline M. Stainback, son-in-law David, grandchildren, Alexandria and Benjamin; son, Neill A. McFarland III (Alex), and daughter-in-law Angela L. McFarland. Surviving in-laws include brother-in-law Fred S. Hodge, two nieces, one nephew, and many beloved cousins.

Rebecca S., “Becky” McFarland was born in Mebane, NC, December 10, 1928. While a toddler, her family moved to Siler City, NC. She grew up there among family and friends with whom she maintained contact throughout her life.

Becky was named “Cutest” in her Senior Class, and she earned money for college working at the local pharmacy’s soda fountain. After high school she was an avid member of the NC Young Republicans, winning speech and essay contests. She attended Meredith College, High Point College, and did post-graduate work at UNC-G. Mrs. McFarland taught elementary grades in the public school systems of Chatham County and North Wilkesboro. Throughout the 1980’s, she served in the classroom and libraries of Guilford and McLeansville Middle Schools.

In addition to teaching, she handled bookkeeping duties for Straughan’s Bookstores (a regional chain founded by her three aunts), and later for her husband’s egg business.

Becky is also survived by her dog Jack, whom she loved very much. Her affection for the dog was perhaps surpassed only by her love for the morning newspaper and good coffee. Becky was a very creative person and fine cook. Her Christmas nut cake – an annual tradition for more than 50 years – will be sorely missed. Her spirited commentary on current events, artfully delivered on a daily basis, will not be forgotten.

Rebecca was a follower of Jesus Christ since childhood. She was also a member of Siler City First Baptist Church, and later Buffalo Presbyterian in Greensboro. She was vocal about her Christian faith, yet her most vivid witness being the way in which she cared for the needs of her ailing husband from 1999 until his death in 2007. Becky was a loving mother, a patriotic American, a proud daughter of the South, and a beloved friend to many.

The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the many people who have shown love and kindness to Becky McFarland. Her funeral was held at Buffalo Presbyterian Church, 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2014 with Dr. Jesse Bledsoe officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received guests at the church immediately following the service.

Memorial gifts in her honor may be made to the General Fund of Buffalo Presbyterian Church, 803 16TH Street, Greensboro, NC, 27405.

Forbis and Dick, N. Elm Street is serving the McFarland family.

TERRY JONES POYTHRESS
Terry Jones Poythress, age 56, of Chapel Hill, died Sunday May 18, 2014 after a year-long battle with cancer. She was born January 27, 1958 in Sanford. She worked at UNC for 25 years.

Terry was a choir director at Damascus Church for several years and had fulfilled many roles there. She was also very active in her community. Her hobbies included reading and her love for cats.

Terry is survived by her husband, Phil Poythress; her parents, Bruce and Myrtle Jones of Moncure; her daughter, Jessica Renee Poythress of the home; her brothers, Ray and his wife Wenona Jones of Marston, Phillip Jones of Moncure; and her sister-in-law, Anne, with her husband Charles Barry Burns of Chapel Hill.

A visitation was held Tuesday, May 20, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Hall Wynne Funeral Services in Pittsboro. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at Damascus Congregational Church in Chapel Hill.

Memorial contributions may be made to UNC Lineburger Cancer Research Center or a charity of your choice.

Hall-Wynne Griffin Chapel served the Poythress family.
