Miss Annette K. McCoyle

Miss Annette K. McCoyle, 61, of Nebo, went to be with the Lord, Friday, November 19, 2004, at The McDowell Nursing Center. A native of McDowell County, she was born February 20, 1943, to the late Shuford McCoyle and Bessie Lee Brown McCoyle. She was a member of the Gethsemane Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Miss McCoyle was also preceded in death by three brothers, Daniel McCoyle, Calvin McCoyle & Lawrence McCoyle; three sisters, Virginia McCoyle Ost, Estelle (Florence) McCoyle Blanton & husband, Charles, and Imogene McCoyle.

Miss McCoyle is survived by two brothers, Gene McCoyle & wife, Leona and William McCoyle & wife, Shirley; five sisters, Eula Mae McKinney & husband, Bud, Faye Waleska & husband, Ray, Jonnie Merle Elliotte & husband, Tom, Pauline Rector & husband, Jack, and Irene Hogan; also surviving are two sister-in-laws, Bonnie McCoyle & Mary McCoyle; eighteen nieces, twenty-two nephews and many great nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services for Miss McCoyle will be held 11:00AM, Monday, November 22, 2004, at the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Reverend Ralph Reep officiating. Interment will follow at the Mt. Calvary Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6:00PM-8:00PM, Sunday, November 21, 2004, at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Florence Elaine Watson

Florence Elaine Watson, age 51, of Morganton, N.C. died Tuesday, April 19, 2005 in Grace Hospital.

Born in Bluefield, W. Va. to the late William Steptoe, Sr. and Kathleen Brown Steptoe, she was a member of Church of God of Prophecy in Morganton having been ordained a minister of the church and was presently attending Western Piedmont Community College.

Surviving Mrs. Watson are her husband, Joseph Edward Watson; one stepson, Anthony Watson of Charlotte, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Lean Sterdevon of Charlotte, N.C.; 10 brothers, Larry, Anthony, Adam, Michael, Henry, David, John, and James Steptoe all of Bluefield, W. Va, Major Steptoe of Lenoir, N.C. and Eugene Steptoe of Marion, N.C. ; 2 sisters, Willie Mae Petty of Marion, and Juanita Rumley of Lenoir, N.C.; also a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be held 2:00 o’clock Sunday, April 24, 2005 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Rev. Jimmy White will officiate with burial following in the McDowell Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mildred “Granny” Carpenter

Mildred “Granny” Carpenter, age 97, of Marion, died Monday, March 31, 2003 at Autumn Care of Marion.

Born in McDowell County to the late O.G. Wiseman and Maggie Cresawn Wiseman, she was a retired Lunchroom Manager at North Cove School with the McDowell County School System. The oldest of nine children, she was a lifelong resident of McDowell County and was a member of Concord United Methodist Church. She was noted for cooking fried apple pies, rolls, and a number of other delicious foods.

She is preceded in death by her husband: Robert Lee Carpenter; one son: Robert Lee Carpenter, Jr.; a daughter-in-law: JoAnn Reavis Carpenter; 3 infant grandchildren; 2 Brothers: O.G. Wiseman Jr. and Alvin Wiseman; and 2 Sisters: Edna Wiseman Duncan and Virginia Wiseman Smith.

Surviving are one son: J.W. Carpenter and his wife Sandra, of North Cove; one daughter: Margaret Carpenter Fender and her husband Earl, of North Cove; a brother-in-law: Clarence Smith of Marion; 4 sisters: Mae W. Smith and her husband Eunie of Marion, Lola W. Webb and her husband Glenn of Marion, Pat W. Rhinehart of Marion, and Zoe W. Byrd of Marion; 7 Grandchildren: Gary Carpenter, Susan Alexander, Richard Carpenter, Christy Carpenter, Tim Carpenter, Jeff Fender, and Greg Fender; 9 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Wednesday, April 2 at Concord United Methodist Church at 11 AM with the Rev. Fred Reese officiating. Burial will follow at Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery in Avery County, NC. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 1, from 6:30-8:30 PM at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion. In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to:

Mrs. Minnie Harbison Patton

Mrs. Minnie Harbison Patton, 78, of 500 Lenoir Road died Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at the skilled Nursing Care Unit of Grace Ridge. Born in Burke County, October 26, 1924 ; she was the daughter of the late Alexander L. Harbison and Junie York Harbison.

Mrs. Patton was a graduate of Morganton High School, attended Lenoir Rhyne College, Queens College and graduated from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. Mrs. Patton had been a staff nurse at Broughton Hospital and was the first Director of Nursing at Western Carolina Center where she served for ten and a half years. She was a member and secretary of the Grace Board of Directors for a number of years and was an active member of the Drum Straight Extension Home Makers . She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Morganton, and a member of the Aldersgate Sunday School Class .

She is survived by: her husband R.L. Patton of the home; sons Robert Patton and wife Linda of Morganton; Paul Patton and wife Vickie of Burlington; daughter June Biggs of Morganton; grandchildren Robert L. Patton, Jill Scarlett McQueen, Bess Patton, Kimberly Little, Stacey Steelmon, Catherine Biggs ; great grandchildren Zachary Steelmon and Justus Steelmon.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, September 13, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church in Morganton with the Reverends Carl Lindquist and Jason Harvey officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 9:30 till 11 AM at the First United Methodist fellowship hall.

Memorials in Mrs. Patton’s memory may be made to the Harbison Scholarship Fund, c/o the North Morganton United Methodist Church, 990 Sandford Drive, Morganton NC 28655.

Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Patton family with arrangements.

Mrs. Hazel Beasley Evans Parker

Mrs. Hazel Beasley Evans Parker, 107, of Marion, died Thursday, June 3, 2004 at her residence.

Born March 17, 1897 in Johnson City, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Samuel Waddell Beasley and Tennessee Martin Beasley. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Parker was also preceded in death by her first husband, Henry G. Evans and her second husband, Kerry Parker.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Marion. Mrs. Parker graduated from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. and from the University of Tennessee as well as the Emerson School of Speech in Boston, Mass. She taught school for 39 years in Cliffside Park, N.J. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, the Extension Club and the Retired Teachers Association of New Jersey.

Mrs. Parker is survived by two nephews, E.W. Parker of Marion and Ralph Garret of Manchester, N.H.; three nieces, Hazel Ruth Candy of California, Helen Oshlo of Dallas, Texas and Jessie Hedgepeth of Lumberton, N.C.; and one cousin, Imogene Browning of Bristol, Tenn. Also surviving are close family friends and neighbors, Ruby Eckard and Bill, Marcie and the late Pete Eckard, the Capps family, Katherine and Ross, Felecia, Ashlynn and Shelby.

Funeral services for Mrs. Parker will be held 11 a.m. today, June 7, 2004 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Rev. Scott Hagaman officiating. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2004 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 99 North Main St., Marion, N.C. 28752.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mr. James Howard Rhom

Mr. James Howard Rhom, 80, of Nebo, died, Friday, November 19, 2004, at his residence. Born July 5, 1924, in McDowell County, he was a son of the late Claude Rhom and Joannie Arrowood Rhom. In addition to his parents, Mr. Rhom was also preceded in death by a sister, Geneva Watkins and a brother, Gordon “Bud” Rhom.

Mr. Rhom was an honorary member of the Marion Moose Lodge and a friend to many.

A wonderful husband and father, he leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Nettie Rhom, of the home; two sons, Wayne E. Rhom and Charles Alvin Rhom, both of Nebo; Glenda L. Johnson, of Bessemer City, NC, Jennie M. Williams & husband, Harley and Shirley A. Hensley & husband, Jamie, all of Nebo; a brother, Lester “Toby” Rhom, of Nebo; Five sisters, Virginia Rumfelt & Mildred Lawing, both of Dysartsville, Myrtle Rumfelt, of Forest City, NC, Cora Mae Davis & husband, Frank, of Stanley, NC and Jean Starrett, & husband, Allen, of Lowell, NC; Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Mr. Rhom will be held 2:00PM, Sunday, November 21, 2004, at the Bethel Free Will Baptist Church with the Reverend Ray Stockton officiating. Interment will follow at the Murphy’s Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7:00PM-9:00PM, Saturday, November 20, 2004, at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan St., Marion, NC, 28752.

Mrs. Minnie Cooke Cline

Mrs. Minnie Cooke Cline, 85, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at Atria Assisted Living in Columbia, SC. Formerly of Glen Alpine, she was the daughter of the late Julius Pinkney Cooke and Sophronia Anna York Cooke.

She was a homemaker and a longtime member of Mount Home Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jink Cline, sisters, Bertie Cooke Kiser, Ruth Cooke and Ann Rocket; brother Otis Cooke.

She is survived by son, Jeff Cline of Pattaya, Thailand, daughter, Suellen Snyder of Columbia, SC; brother, Todd Cook of Charlotte; sister, Pearl “Cookie” Mundy of Lutz, FL; 4 grandchildren.

The funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, April 25th at Mount Home Baptist Church with Reverends Jerry Gamble and David Orders presiding. Interment will follow the service at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.

Jeffrey “Jeff” Paul Noblitt

Jeffrey “Jeff” Paul Noblitt, age 47, of Old Fort, died April 1, 2003 at his home. Born to Paul R. Noblitt and Katherine Davis, he was a lifelong resident of McDowell County and was employed with Ethan Allen Furniture in Old Fort. He was a member of Cherry Springs Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Cathy Duncan and her husband Keith; a nephew, Clay Duncan; and a niece, Hayley Duncan, all of Old Fort.

Services will be held on Thursday, April 3 at 3 PM at Cherry Springs Baptist Church. The Rev. J.C. Wilson will officiate with burial immediately following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday April 2 from 6-8 PM at Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort. In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to: Hospice of McDowell County

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort.

Mr. Eugene “Gene” Blackwell Rader

Mr. Eugene “Gene” Blackwell Rader, 91, of East Concord Street, Morganton died Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at his residence. Born February17, 1912 in Caldwell County, he was the son of the late Robert Blackwell Rader and Delia Anderson Rader . His daughter Rebecca Ann Rader, a brother and four sisters preceded him in death.

Mr. Rader had retired from Gene’s Drive In which he was the owner and operator for some thirty years. He was a member of the Mount Home Baptist Church and a member of the Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge No. 217. He was a charter member of the Morganton Elk’s Lodge and a fifty year member of the Oasis Shrine Temple.

He is survived by: his wife of Fifty eight years Lettie Walker Rader; sons Mike Rader and wife Cindy of Mount Airy, Robert Rader and wife Megg of Raleigh; grandchildren Mary Rader, Michael Rader, Mary Stiles Rader and Rob Rader; brothers Bill Rader, Claude Rader; sisters Nell Clark, Helen Ward, Betty Sigmon and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, September 13, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with the Reverend Jerry Gamble officiating . Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services on Saturday at Kirksey Funeral Home.

Memorials in Mr. Rader’s memory may the made to the Mount Home Baptist Church Building Fund, 2272 Mount Home Baptist Church Road, Morganton, NC 28655.
