Siler City - Mrs. Mary Florence Johnson Scott 86, formerly of 974 Barker Rd., Bear Creek, NC passed away Monday, February 11, 2013 at Siler City Center in Siler City. Graveside Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 2 pm at Brush Creek Baptist Cemetery with Rev. Don Davis officiating. Mrs. Scott was born in Richmond Co. and had worked many years in Poultry processing.
Mrs. Scott is survived by Daughters- Edna Conoly of Bear Creek and Emma Smith of Moncure. Sons- David Lee Scott of Sanford, Colon Scott Jr. of Gulf, and James Allen Scott of WhiteHill. 11 Grandchildren 23 Great-Grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 from 6-8 pm at Joyce-Brady Chapel, 3833 Chatham St., Bennett, NC 27208 and other times at the home, 974 Barker Rd., Bear Creek, NC.

J. H. Brown
December 25, 1926 - February 15, 2013
Bennett - Mr. J. H. “Red” Brown 86, of 338 Lewis Brown Rd., Bennett passed away Friday, February 15, 2013 at Chatham Hospital in Siler City. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, February 18, 2013 at 3 pm at Pleasant Grove Christian Church where he was a member with Rev. Mark Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
Mr. Brown was a Randolph Co. native and was a Veteran of WWII. He went in after the Hiroshima bombs. He was a member of the “Old Timers Bench Club” at Routh’s Grocery and he had retired from Glendale Hoisery in Siler City. He was a avid collector of Antiques, loved to bird hunt, and gardening. He not only loved to garden, but he loved to share his garden. Mr. Brown had a great love of music, he directed the choir at his church for over 45 years. He served in many areas at his church including Sunday School Teacher, Church Treasurer, and a member of the Men’s Fellowship. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents- the late Reuben J. & Melissa Purvis Brown, brothers- Wilburn & Stacy.
Mr. Brown is survived by: Wife - Jearline Hancock Brown of the home. Daughters-Rita Brown Holt & husband Steve of Bear Creek, Angie Brown Fields & husband Buddy of Goldston. Brother - Clifton Brown & wife Mary Etta of Siler City. Sister- Leah B. Short & husband Clarence of Bennett. Grandchildren - Beth H. Caviness & husband Jacob of Bennett, Joshua Holt of Bear Creek, & Amber Fields of Goldston. Great-Grandchildren - Reid Caviness & Anna Claire Caviness of Bennett.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2013 from 6-8 pm at Joyce-Brady Chapel, 3833 Chatham St., Bennett, NC and other times at the home.

Delphia Lee Maness
January 3, 1944 - February 25, 2013
Robbins - Mrs. Delphia Lee “Dale” Maness 69, of Robbins, NC passed away Monday, February 25, 2013 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 11 am at Bright Light Baptist Church with Rev. Ralph Voncannon officiating. Burial will follow in the Maness Cemetery at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Maness was a Randolph Co. native and was a Real Estate Broker for many years. She had been married to her loving husband Bernie for 48 years. The greatest joy in her life was her family and her grandchildren.
Mrs. Maness is survived by Husband- Bernie Maness of the home. Sons- Bernie Maness Jr. & wife Mary of Bear Creek, Todd Maness & wife Andrea of Vass. Grandson- Nicholas Maness. Granddaughter- Erin Maness. Sisters- Sandie McBride of Georgia, Brenda Knonenburg of Virginia, Vena Sibert of Georgia, Phyllis McBride of Greensboro, Pamela Purcell of Greensboro, & Lynn Manderson of Florida.

Rachel Barker
January 28, 1935 - February 28, 2013
Siler City - L. Rachel Barker 78, of 1655 Hal Clark Rd., Siler City passed away Thursday, February 28, 2013 at her residence. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 3 pm at Moon's Chapel Baptist Church where she was a member with Rev. Scott Faw officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Ms. Barker was a Chatham County native and was a EKG technician. She was the daughter of the late Johnie H. & Dena Hicks Barker. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother David Barker.
Ms. Barker is survived by Daughter- Kimberly Phillips of the home. Sons- Gary Phillips of Bennett and Ronnie Dean Phillips of Mineral Springs. Brothers- Johnie H. Barker Jr. of Bennett, Earl Barker of Sanford, Virgil Barker of Siler City. Sisters- Allene Hart of Siler City, Christine Harris of High Point, Virginia Justice of Siler City, Juanita Richardson of Bear Creek and Frances Gilmore of Siler City. Grandchildren- Keri Branson, Katie Phillips, & Matthew Oldham. Great-Grandchildren- Trevor Sprouse & Waylon Atkins.
Visitation will be on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 2 pm 1 hour prior to the funeral service at Moon’s Chapel Baptist Church.

Christopher Shannon Garner
October 15, 1976 - March 1, 2013
Christopher Shannon Garner, age 36, of 4337 Maness Road in Seagrove, died Friday, March 1, 2013 at his residence.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at New Center Christian Church in Seagrove, with Rev. Ralph Smith, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Garner Family cemetery in Robbins.
Mr. Garner was born in Moore County to David L. Garner and Lola E. Maness. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Quimby L. Garner. He loved to fish, ride his 4-wheeler, shoot pool, and listen to country and oldie music. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his children.
Surviving is his wife, Becky Garner of the home; daughters, Katelyn G. Burton of Seven Lakes, Makala D. Garner, Haley M. Garner, and a son, Michael A. Garner, all of the home. Surviving is his mother, Lola E. Maness of Seagrove; father, David L. Garner of the home; grandparents, Beauford Odell Maness, Louise Moore Maness of Seagrove, and Larry Marie Garner of Robbins.
Visitation will be 6-8 P.M Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett.

HELEN ANNA TILGNER
Helen Anna Tilgner, 89, formerly of Pittsboro, died Sunday, (08-21-2011) at U.N.C. Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
She is survived by her daughter Diane Marie Tilgner of Pittsboro; son Richard James Tilgner of New Mexico; and one grandson.
Mrs. Tilgner is preceded in death by her husband Robert Tilgner, her parents, Louis Lingner and Marie Dragner Lingner, and five siblings.
Memorial services in Pittsboro and Pennsylvania will be announced at a later date.

JOHN ISON (J.I.) SMITH
John Ison (J.I.) Smith, 91, of Liberty died Tuesday (08-16-2011) at Randolph Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday (08-20-2011) at Edwards Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Lamont Stokes officiating. Burial followed at Gilmore Memorial Park.
Mr. Smith was a native of Randolph County, a member of Edwards Grove Church, and a plumber by trade.
Survivors include daughters, Lucy P. Jones of Richmond, VA, Renae Smith of Ramseur; sister, Balfour Staley of Staley; and one granddaughter.
J. RONNIE HICKS
J. Ronnie Hicks, 64, of Siler City died Monday (08-22-2011) at Firsthealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday (08-25-2011) at 2 p.m. at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Womack Keck officiating.
Mr. Hicks was a Lee County native and a truck driver for Lucks Inc. He was an Army Reserves veteran and a member of Brookdale Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Margaret Hicks; and brothers, Ricky and David Hicks.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Moody Hicks of the home; brothers, Michael Hicks, Jerry Hicks both of Siler City, Jimmy Hicks of Snow Camp; sisters, Sybil Warren of Siler City, Becky Vess of Rock Hill, SC, Debbie Marley and Sandy Maness both of Bear Creek.
Visitation was held Wednesday (08-24-2011) from 6-7:30 p.m at Joyce-Brady Chapel and other times at the home.
ELIZABETH “BETTY” BONFANTI
Elizabeth “Betty” Bonfanti of Pittsboro passed away peacefully on August 11, 2011 in Siler City. She was 89 years old.
Funeral services were held at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Pittsboro, followed by a private burial at Blue Heron Farm in Chatham County.
Betty is survived by her son, Bruce Saunders and daughter-in-law, Susanne Saunders of Pittsboro; grandchildren Carmen Saunders of New York, NY, Janine Saunders of New York, NY; her brother, Matthew Faenza of Warren, Michigan; and her sisters, Ida Goff of Hudson, NY and Ann Pope of Dallas, Texas.
JOHN LEWIS OLDHAM
John Lewis Oldham, 77, of 573 Henry Oldham Road, Bear Creek died Sunday, August 21, 2011 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.
Mr. Oldham was born February 10, 1934, the son of Henry Louis and Mattie (Fisher) Oldham. He was a native of Chatham County and a member of Bethany Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class, he had served as a deacon and was always there to open the church, keeping the heat and air and the sound system working. John was a retired mechanic and had also worked with the Chatham County Schools as a gas delivery driver. He enjoyed working on race cars, mowing his yard and being outside. John was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Louis and Mattie Fisher Oldham; brother, J. B. Oldham, Sr. and sister, Gladys Womble.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle (Patterson) Oldham of the home; son, Greg L. Oldham and wife, Angie of Carthage; grandsons, Josh and Cristian Oldham; four sisters, Grace Oldham Dowdy of Bear Creek, Frances Oldham Johnson of Bear Creek, Mabel Oldham Lemons of Bear Creek, Inez Hough Dowd and husband, Dewey of Siler City; and one brother, Eugene F. Oldham and wife, Janice of Bear Creek.
The family received friends Tuesday, August 23, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral was held Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 3 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church, 503 Alton King Road, Gulf with Rev. Womack Keck, Rev. David Hicks and Rev. Derrick Baker officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
RACHEL SPENCE BROOKS
Rachel Lee Spence Brooks, 90, died Sunday, August 21, 2011 in Siler City. A native of Randolph County, she was born November 17, 1920, to Jennie Finison Spence and Ralph Lee Spence and devoted her life to her family and education.
She graduated from Siler City High School in 1937 as Valedictorian of her class and from Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) in 1941. She married Ernest Edwards Brooks in 1944 and was widowed in 1995.
She was a long-time teacher in the public schools, retiring as a librarian at the Paul Braxton Elementary School in Siler City in 1977. She remained an enthusiastic reader her entire life and possessed an unwavering curiosity. She enjoyed a long, active retirement, which included many days spent on the North Carolina coast with her family and the births of four grandchildren and two great-grand-children.
Mrs. Brooks was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siler City for over 65 years and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Alpha Delta Kappa teachers' sorority.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, August 24 at 11 a.m. at Siler City First United Methodist Church following a 10 a.m. visitation at the church. The Reverend Clyde Denny conducted the service. Burial followed at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Nancy Spence Sizemore and Doris Spence Albright. She is survived by son Steven E. Brooks and wife, Jennie, of Durham; daughter Sara Brooks Strassle and husband, Lyle, of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Rachel Catherine Campbell and husband, Christopher, Spence Brooks O'Neill and husband, James, Ernest Hunter Brooks, and Anna Brooks Creagh and husband, Theodore Slater; two great-grandchildren, Frank Brooks O'Neill and Adam Brooks Campbell; two step-grandchildren, Karen Strassle Skoglund and Ryan Strassle; and a half-brother, Dwight Spence.

ROLAND PERCY EUBANKS
Mr. Roland Percy Eubanks, 86, died Wednesday (08-10-2011) at his home in Bynum.
Mr. Eubanks’ wishes were for a private burial in Rock Springs Baptist Church cemetery, and his request will be honored.
A Chatham County native, Mr. Eubanks was born September 25, 1924 to Roy Lee and Fleta Moore Eubanks. A veteran of World War II, he spent his life working as a self-employed building contractor. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mozzell Perry Eubanks; son, Marvin Wayne Eubanks; grandson, Darryl Scott Johnson; and five siblings.
Survivors include his daughter Shirley Johnson of Chapel Hill; sister, Ivie Marie Cooper of Bynum; one grandson and two great-grandsons.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
