DELPHIE BOWMAN NANCE

Mrs. Delphie Bowman Nance, 83, of Siler City died Sunday, (01-01-2006) at her home.

Graveside services and burial will be held Friday, (01-06-2006) at Tyson’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Bob Wachs and Rev. Todd Brown officiating.

Mrs. Nance was a native of Bergville, Minn., a nurse in Naval Hospital Corp. during WW II. Prior to moving to Chatham County, she was a LPN at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital in Reidsville. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Danville, Va., and a member and past secretary of DAV, Chapter #91 in Pittsboro.

Survivors include her husband, Milton Nance, Sr., of the home; daughters, Jean Weill of Lanesville, Ind., Joan Harris of Siler City, Jan Nance of Fuquay Varina; son, Milton Nance, Jr. of Liberty; brother, George Bowman of Blackduck, Minn.; sisters, Audrey Stein of Pineville, Minn., Janet Kuhne of Milwaukee, Wisc.; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial should be directed to Community Home Care and Hospice, 1414 East 11th Street, Siler City, NC 27344 or to DAV Chapter #91, PO Box 1140, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

FAYE HORTON WALDEN

Faye Horton Walden, 63, of Bennett, died Tuesday, (12-20-05) at SunBridge Care of Siler City.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, (12-23-05) at Wesley Chapel Christian Fellowship Church, with Rev. Larry Smith officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Walden was a native of Alamance County and a member of Glovers United Church of Christ where she was a deaconess and a Sunday school teacher. She was employed by U.N.C. Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Walden; son, Dennis Walden of Greensboro; and a sister, Ann Horton Baldwin of Greensboro.

JESSIE CAROL FOXX DAVIS

Jessie Carol Foxx Davis, 60, of Boulder, Colorado, died Tuesday, (12-20-05), at Hospice of Boulder.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (12-28-05) at Lambert Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. William Harrington officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Davis was a native of Chatham County and a member of Lambert Chapel Baptist Church. She was a retired registered nurse at Chatham Hospital, a graduate of Chatham High School, and Kate Biddon School of Nursing.

Survivors include a daughter, Tonya Davis of Greensboro; son, Thurman Davis of Boulder, Colorado; mother, Veatrice Foxx of Bear Creek; sisters, Pauline Hall of Hackensack, N.J., Louise Siler, Dorothy Clemmons, Hattie Hanner, Gwendolyn Hanner, all of Bear Creek, Mary Ann Williams of Siler City; brother, Carl Lewis Foxx of Siler City.

THOMAS JACKSON "BILL" GILLILAND

Thomas Jackson "Bill" Gilliland, 84, of 1548 West Third Street, Siler City died Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 31, 2005 at Oakley Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Sandifer and Rev. Val Chadwick officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Gilliland was a native of Chatham County, an Army Air Corps veteran and a member of Oakley Baptist Church where he was former church treasurer. He was retired from Siler City Oil Company as owner/operator. He was preceded in death by his wife, Burnette Brown Gilliland, a daughter, Joanne G. White Brown, a son, Larry Jackson "Jackie" Gilliland, and sisters, Dorothy Marley, Eunice Moore and Mary Dunn.

Survivors include a son, James Randall "Randy" Gilliland of Siler City; daughters, Kaye Gilliland Ferguson and husband, Michael of Greensboro, Sherrie Gilliland of Sanford; brothers, Howard Gilliland, Ray Gilliland, both of Siler City; sisters, Allene G. Amos of Monticell, Ga., Mozelle G. Fields, Shirley G. Edmisten, both of Siler City; grandchildren, Camie White Morris and husband, Mike of Siler City, James "Jamie" Randall Gilliland and wife, Jill, Christopher Lynn Gilliland, all of Bear Creek, Heidi Kidd Faucette and husband, Travis, Nicholas Kidd, all of Greensboro, Jeff Fields of Siler City; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jenna Gilliland, Gracyn, Jaclyn and Parker Faucette, Cole and Haley Morris; and special family friend, Connie Dowdy.

Memorials may be made to Oakley Baptist Church, 2300 Siler City-Glendon Road, Siler City, N.C. 27344.

BISHOP BILLY SILER, SR.

Bishop Billy J. Siler, Sr., was born on June 30, 1930 to the late Herman and Pauline Siler. He departed this life at 12:55 p.m. in the home with all his immediate family by his side on December 21, 2005.

He was married to Marie Coble of Asheboro, North Carolina. To this union, three children were added, Paulette, Billy, Jr., and Ronnie.

He leaves his precious memories to share: his wife, Marie of the home; son, Billy Siler, Jr. and his wife, Paulette of Siler City, their son, Lamont Simpson of Greensboro; daughter, Paulette Broome and her husband Ronnie Broome of Sandy Ridge, N.C., their sons, Brian and Michael; and son, Ronnie Siler of Siler City and his children, Ma'tea', Brittany, Ryan, Jared, all of Siler City and JeJuan of Asheboro; brother, Bobby Siler of Washington, D.C. and his children, Victor, Dennis, Vanessa and Vickie and their sons, Jonathan and Tony of Washington, D.C., Edward Siler and wife Shirley of Siler City, N.C. and their children, Deborah and Eddie of Washington, D.C.; sister, Doris Marsh of Siler City and her son, Marcellus "Petey" Marsh of Siler City.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at the Church of God of Prophecy in Liberty, with burial following at Chatham Memorial Park, Siler City.

Acknowledgment: The flowers you sent, the cards you mailed, the service you stopped to render, and the prayers you said which played a part, in easing the pain that was in our hearts. Each helped us to find that strength to bear the loss of the one we held so dear. It was to us a great comfort indeed, to see you in our time of sorrow and need. So from our hearts which you tried to mend, we sincerely thank you again for being such wonderful family and friends.

ANNIE RUTH WHITT BAKER

Annie Ruth Whitt Baker, 71, died Thursday, December 29, 2005 in Anderson, S.C. Born in Chatham County, her parents Dewey and Mazie Whitt and daughter Mary Lee Maddox preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Charlie Ray Baker of the home; sons, Randy Whitt of Pittsboro, Ronnie Wallace and Donnie Wallace, both of Monroe, Ga.; daughter, Penny Hardy of Winder, Ga.; brothers, Donald Whitt of Pittsboro, C.D. Whitt of Sanford; sisters, Dorothy Farmer of Clover, S.C., Wilma Maddox of Sanford; ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Sunday, January 1, 2006 at 3 p.m. at Emanuel Worship Center in Winder, Ga., by pastor Larry Pruett.

MR. REZZ CLEVELAND (RC) OVERMAN, JR.

Mr. Rezz Cleveland (RC) Overman, Jr., 92, died Sunday, January 1, 2006 at Universal Health Care in Ramseur.

A funeral service was conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at Rocky River Friends Church in Siler City where he was a member and loved his church. Burial followed at the Meeting cemetery.

Mr. Overman was born in Randolph County. He was employed for a year with the Conservation Corporation in Tennessee at age 19 and several years for Barnwell Brothers Trucking. Mr. Overman worked in the Panama Canal Zone during World War II as a crane operator for five years with his wife, Cleta Mae Stout Sellers. He also had been employed as a driver for R.C. Milliken Sausage Company and developed his own trucking company, R. C. Overman Trucking, which hauled precast concrete beams for Arnold Stone. Mr. Overman showed and raised award winning Paint Horses on his farm in northern Chatham County.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Cleta Mae Stout Sellers; parents, Rezz Cleveland and Sallie Kivett Overman, Sr.; brothers, Archie and O'Kelly; sister, Bessie; daughter, Jean Kellerman; and son-in-law, Frank Bowman.

Mr. Overman is survived by his wife, Velma; daughter, Joyce Bowman; son-in-law, Jay Kellerman; step-children, Carolyn Craven Brooks and Lee Craven; grandchildren, Keith, Terry, Jan, and Mike Bowman, and Cynthia Bowman Goodin; nine great-grandchildren; and niece, Dottie Kidd.

Cora Miller Phillips
Jun 13, 1914 - Mon Dec 14, 2009

Swannanoa - Cora Miller Phillips, 95, of Swannanoa went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, December 14th, at Asheville Health Care Center with her family by her side.

She was the daughter of the late Mack and Lizzie Miller and the wife of the late Daniel Byrd, Claude Robert Lollis, Sr. and Ed Phillips. Cora was also predeceased by two children Richard Byrd and Helen Byrd and three granddaughters Peggy Morrow, Elizabeth Lyda and Shirley Brown. She was a faithful member of Oakley Free Will Baptist Church. Cora loved to sing gospel music in church and at the nursing center. She enjoyed spending time with her family and watching her favorite baseball team the Atlanta Braves.

She is survived by a daughter Thelma Hunter of Candler, and a son Bob Lollis, and wife, Shirley of Swannanoa. Cora leaves behind 21 grandchildren, several great grand children and great- great-children along with many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be Thursday, December 17th at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Brigman’s funeral service in Black Mountain. Visitation will be at 1:00 pm in the chapel of the funeral home on Thursday until the service hour.

The family would like to thank the staff of Asheville Health Care for the care they provided Mrs. Phillips.

Arrangements are entrusted to Brigman’s funeral service in Black Mountain.

Lynn Hipps
May 8, 1953 - Mon Dec 28, 2009

Swannanoa – Junior Lynn Hipps, 56, entered into eternal rest on Monday, December 28, 2009.

A native of Greeneville, TN where he attended South Green High School, he lived most of his life in Swannanoa and was the son of the late Charlie and Marcella Stills Hipps. Lynn worked at Beacon Mfg. Co. for 32 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene Phillips Hipps; daughters, Shannon Hipps of Black Mountain and Ashley Hipps of Swannanoa; sisters, Brenda Hipps Juso of Alexander and Crickett Hipps Burkey of Swannanoa; brothers, Gary and Carroll Hipps of Swannanoa; grandchildren, Kory and Andy Jeno of Black Mountain, and step-father, Ron Labrum.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday in the Chapel of Brigman’s funeral service in Black Mountain with the Rev. Arnold Vess and Mr. Bill Bridges officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice in Lynn’s memory.

Ruthie Lucille (Melton) Searcy

MARION - Ruthie Lucille Melton Searcy of McDowell went to be with her Heavenly Father Saturday, December 26th with her family by her side.

She was born in Buncombe County to the late Lee and Mary Melton. Ruthie is predeceased by her husband Jack Searcy, daughter Ruby Brendle, sons Edmond Melton, Eugene Searcy, sisters Ethel Robinson and Frances Bowers, and a brother Robert Melton.

Mrs. Searcy is survived by daughters Shirley Womick and Pat Biddix, sisters Syble Elmore and Bessie Huskins and a brother Clarence Melton. Nieces Sharon Howard, Sandra Elmore, and Mary Williams nephews Jerry Bowers, Ron Huskins, Thomas Huskins, Larry Elmore, and Mark Elmore. Ruthie had 9 grand children and one great-grandchild Emma which is the 5th generation of the family.

The funeral service will be at 6:30 PM on Tuesday with the Revs. Tommy and Judy Hardin officiating at Brigman’s funeral service in Black Mountain.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 pm until the service hour at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the funeral home to help the funeral expenses.

Marie Wright

BLACK MOUNTAIN - Gladys Marie Wright of Ackworth GA Black Mountain went to be with her Heavenly Father on December, 24 2009 with her family by her side.

Marie is predeceased by her parents Charlie Morgan and Nancy Marlowe and her husband Marvin V. Wright.

Mrs. Wright is survived by her daughter Faye White (Jerry) and son Terry Wright (Savina) also 3 Brothers and 2 sisters along with 4 grandsons 4 great-grandsons and 3 great-granddaughters.

The family will receive friends in the chapel of Brigman’s funeral service in Black Mountain Tuesday, December 29 at 11:00 am until the service hour. The funeral will be at 12:00 PM Tuesday in the chapel of the funeral home.

Roger Dale Robinson
Jul 25, 1949 - Thu Dec 17, 2009

Roger Dale Robinson, 60, of 1247 Garren Creek Road in Fairview departed this life on December 17, 2009 after a lengthy battle with illness.

A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he served with honor in the United States Army, before beginning a long and successful career with Hunter Nissan until his retirement in 2005. Roger was an avid sportsman who loved to fish and play golf and was a much beloved member of the Fairview community.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife, Mary Ruth Robinson of the home, his son Ryan Marsh and wife, Wendy of Fairview, his son John Robinson, who is currently deployed with the Navy in Iraq, his daughter, Tana Oliver and husband James, of Fairview, his mother Doris Morrow of Fairview, his sister, Pat Clark and husband Gary, of Hilton Head, SC, his brother David Robinson and wife, Kathy of Fairview and his grandchildren, Christopher Marsh of Fairview and Lauren Robinson, JT Washington and Roger Wallace Robinson of Virginia Beach, VA.

The funeral service will be at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. David Schaffer and Bruce Buckner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 PM, Wednesday until the service hour. Funeral services are entrusted to Brigman’s funeral service in Black Mountain.
