MARY LOU COTTEN

Mary Lou Cotten, 89, of Greensboro died Sunday, (02-19-2006) at Guilford Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, (02-23-2006) at Roberts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Goldston with Rev. Jace L. Cox, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Cotten was a native of Chatham County and a member of Robert Chapel Church.

Survivors include a son, Walter O. Keith Cotten of Sanford; daughters, Bettie Shipman, Deborah Percell, both of Greensboro; sister, Iona Cheek, of Seagrove; ten grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

DORA ELIZABETH LANCASTER WARFFORD LAWSON

Dora Elizabeth Lancaster Warfford Lawson, 95, of Siler City died Saturday, February 25, 2006.

The daughter of the late J. Boyd Lancaster and Addie Bitsell Lancaster, Dora was born in West Springs, South Carolina. As the daughter of a South Carolina State Senator, Dora attended the University of South Carolina during the Depression. In 1933, Dora began her teaching career in Pauline, S.C. where she taught in S.C. for 13 years. She married Reuben Eli (Bill) Warfford and in 1945 moved to Siler City. Dora Lawson taught at Henry Siler School in the Chatham County School System for 29 years, retiring in 1974. She and her husband Bill were very active in the community. She was a member of the Eastern Star, holding several positions in her 50 plus years of service, and was also a member of the DAR and Confederate Daughters of America. Dora was a charter member of Alpha Zeta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa where she served in various capacities. Dora enjoyed the fellowship of her garden club and bridge clubs, as well as her Sunday school class she taught for many years at First United Methodist Church, which now bears her name.

Mrs. Lawson was preceded in death by husbands, Reuben "Bill" Warfford and Walker Lawson, brother English Camak Lancaster and step-brother Max West.

She is survived by sons James (Jimmy) Warfford and wife Linda of Siler City, Reuben (Bill) Warfford and wife Linda of Pittsboro; grandson, Chris Warfford and wife Janice of Siler City; granddaughters Jenny Lind DeWeese and husband Brad of Asheville, Mary Beth Warfford of Morrisville; great-granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Warfford of Siler City.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church in Siler City.

Memorials to Bogansville Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 4052 Buffalo West Springs Hwy, Jonesville, S.C. 29353 or to the charity of choice.

HAZEL BULLA ESTRIDGE

Hazel Bulla Estridge, 80, of 1101 Oakley Church Road, Bear Creek died Monday, February 27, 2006 at her home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at Brush Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Patrick Fuller and Rev. Ed Lowder officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Estridge was a native of Randolph County and a poultry farmer. She was a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church, the Bessie Gilbert Sunday school class and the Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ewen W. Estridge and two brothers, J.D. Bulla and Max Bulla.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan E. Rives and husband, Jackie of Bear Creek; sons, James Randall Estridge of Bear Creek, Tony M. Estridge and wife, Elaine of Bennett; Dan T. Estridge of Bear Creek; sisters, Helen Cranford of Robbins, Jean Pickett of Lexington, Beatrice Williams of Goldsboro; sister-in-law, Imogene King Bulla of Asheboro; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to UNC Hospice, Chatham County Unit, cfo Betty Terry, 519 South Second Avenue, Siler City, N.C. 27344 or to a charity of choice.

PHILLIP DALE POWERS

Phillip Dale Powers, 40, of Siler City died Wednesday, (02-08-2006) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, (02-11-2006) at Jordan-Matthews High School Auditorium with Rev. Dennis Boone, Rev. Blair Slaughter, and Rev. Kevin Stumbo officiating. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mr. Powers was a native of Chatham County, a 1985 graduate of Jordan-Matthews High School and a member of First Wesleyan Church. He was a member of Chatham County Rescue Squad, Siler City Fire Department and the Salvation Army. He was a paramedic for Alamance County, an EMS for Chatham County, and was employed as a paramedic with First Health. He was a former board member of the American Red Cross, a member of Safe Kids and CERT Team.

Survivors include his wife, Michelle Clark Powers of the home; daughters, Brittany Powers, Ashely Powers; Michael Powers, Brayden, all of the home; mother, Kathryn Holt Powers of Siler City; brother, Eddie Powers of Siler City; and sister, Tammy Powers of Oak Island.

Memorials may be directed to the Siler City Fire Department, PO Box 581, Siler City, N.C. 27344.

MARY MACIE GOLDSTON

Mary Macie Goldston, 94 of Pittsboro died Saturday, (02-11-2006) at her home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, (02-15-2006) at Alston Chapel U.H.C. with Elder Carrie Bolton officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Goldston was a native of Chatham County, a member of Alston Chapel Church and a foster mother to many children.

Survivors include a daughter, Rev. Rozetta Goldston of the home; sons, Arthur L. Goldston of Pittsboro, Robert E. Alston of the home, Bryant C. Headen of Siler City; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

CHARLES “FARRELL” BREWER

Charles “Farrell” Brewer, 59, of Robbins died Tuesday, (02-14-2006) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (02-16-2006) at Fall Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Gelsthorpe and Rev. Ronnie Chaney officiating. Burial will follow in the Brewer Family Cemetery on Jesse Phillips Road in Robbins.

Mr. Brewer was a Montgomery County native, a retired poultry farmer, a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church where he was a member of the Baptist Men and a former deacon. He was also a member of the board of directors of High Falls Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Phillips Brewer of the home; sons, Charles “Eric” Brewer of Robbins, Douglas Farrell Brewer of Shallotte; daughter, Dana Jeffries of Robbins; father and step-mother, Curtis F. and Clarise Brewer of Robbins; brother, Tony Brewer of Robbins; and ten grandchildren.

Visitation was held Wednesday from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Fall Creek Baptist Church sanctuary, and other times at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett.

Memorials should be directed to Fall Creek Building Fund, 1732 Fall Creek Church Road, Bennett, N.C. 27208.

JAMES ROOSEVELT (PUD) MASHBURN, JR.

James Roosevelt (Pud) Mashburn, Jr., 72, of Goldston died Tuesday, (02-14-2006) at Sunbridge Care Facilities in Siler City.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday (02-16-2006) at Carbonton United Methodist Church Cemetery, Sanford with Rev. Frank Lloyd, officiating.

Mr. Mashburn was a native of Chatham County, retired from Boling Chair, and a member of Carbonton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include daughters, Debbie and Cathy, both of Asheboro; sisters, Faye M. Anders of Goldston, Shirley M. Wyrick of Greensboro, Nancy M. Harrell of Reidsville; and four grandchildren.

Visitation was held Wednesday, (02-15-2006) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, W. Chatham Relay for Life, c/o Betty Terry, 519 South Second Avenue, Siler City, N.C. 27344.

MALCOLM ALONZO “MAC” MINTER

Malcolm Alonzo “Mac” Minter, 71, of Bear Creek died Sunday, (02-12-2006) at his residence.

Graveside services and burial will be held at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Del Parkerson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.

A native of Lee County, he was a real estate broker, a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado, Fisburne Military Academy, Virginia and Lees McRae College in Banner Elk. He was a past member of Mecklinburg County Board of Realtors, past president of Mint Hill Lions Club, president of N.C. Archery Association, past president of Sanford Jaycees, and a Charter Member of Sanford Moose Lodge 386.

Survivors include sons, Thomas Paul Strout, David M. Strout, both of Oklahoma City, Ok.; daughter, Sandra Lynne Minter; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Youth Ministry, P.O. Box B, Gulf, NC 27256.

THOMAS PAUL BRYANT

Mr. Thomas Paul Bryant, 90, died Friday, February 10, 2006 at his home.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2006 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. Raleigh Castelloe, Rev. Mark Sink, and Rev. Jack Livingston officiating. Burial followed in Gilmore Memorial Park.

Mr. Bryant was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and on the cemetery committee. He was owner and operator of Bryant Oil Company for 42 years. He loved going to P&W Café in Climax every morning to drink coffee with his friends.

He was born on February 17, 1915 in Surry County, the son of the late Milton Ellis and Vallie Mae Chilton Bryant; also preceding him in death were sisters, Ethel Fogleman, Opal Smith, and brother, Hassel Bryant.

Mr. Bryant is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mrs. Lois Patrum Bryant of the home; daughters, Pat Walker and husband Larry of Trinity, Vickie Roberts and husband Steve of Siler City; three grandsons, Mark Walker and wife Amy, Robbie Walker and wife Cindy, all of Trinity; Trent Roberts and wife Debra of Bear Creek; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Paul, Bryant, and Benjamin Walker, Bradley and Ashley Roberts.

Memorials may be directed to Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 7881 Old 421 Road, Liberty, NC 27298.

MARIE ELLIS STOVER

Marie Ellis Stover, 85, of Universal Health Care in Ramseur, formerly of Siler City, died Monday, Feb-ruary 13, 2006 at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Robert A. Griffith and Rev. Dr. Walter YoHo officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Stover was born September 27, 1920 in Chatham County to Daniel and Bessie Ellis of the Harper's Cross Road Community. She graduated from Bonlee High School and King's Business School in Charlotte. She was a long-time member of Tyson's Creek Baptist Church, where she made many childhood friends and loved them over the years. One of her greatest pleasures in life was the annual homecoming at Tyson's Creek Baptist Church. She was retired from the Siler City Credit Bureau and was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Robert "Bob" Stover, Sr. The family wishes a heart-felt thank you to Dr. Todd Granger and to the Universal Health Care staff.

Survivors include daughters, Nancy Jean Robards of Pawleys Island, S.C., Martha Ellis Rogers of Jamestown; sons, Robert Stover, Jr. and wife, Nancy of Asheboro, Danny Stover and wife, Wanda of Bear Creek, Tommy L. Stover and wife, Candy of Hinton, W.Va.; twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

ISAAC (TOOT) ALSTON, JR.

Isaac (Toot) Alston, Jr., 85, of Pittsboro died Thursday, (01-26-2006) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, (01-31-2006) at St. Matthews AME Zion Church with Rev. Gloria Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Alston, a member of St. Matthews AME Zion Church, served in the U.S. Army until 1945. He was employed in the poultry industry and with Keller’s Nursing home.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie M. Alston; sons, Robert L. Alston, Percy E. Alston, both of Pittsboro; daughters, Carrie L. Alston of Jonesboro, Ga., Brenda F. Alston of Mableton, Ga.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

LOUISE CONNER KIDD

Mrs. Louise Conner Kidd, 86, of Pittsboro, died Wednesday, (02-01-2006) in Chapel Hill.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, (02-04-2006) at Pittsboro United Methodist church. A private interment will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Kidd, a native of Burlington, VT., was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. She taught at Moncure, Pittsboro, and Northwood High Schools. and was a member of Pittsboro United Methodist Church, where she served in many capacities. She was a member of the UNC-CH Alumni Association and the Mayflower Society. Her civic involvement included serving as president of Friends of the Library, participating in raising funds for a medical center in Pittsboro and volunteering at the local food bank.

Survivors include daughters, Jennifer Carpenter of Garner, Kathy Keane of Union Hall, Ireland, Betsy Starling of Madison, WI., Denise Thomp-son of St. Louis, MO; sister, Millicent Barnard of Shoreham, VT; brother, Fred Conner of Greensboro; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Pittsboro United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 716, Pittsboro, N.C. 27312.

LYDIA THOMAS PHILLIPS

Lydia Thomas Phillips, 90, of Siler City died Saturday, (02-04-2006) at SunBridge Care Facilities.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, (02-07-2006) at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Bear Creek, with Rev. Darrell Garner, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Phillips was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, William (Junior) C. Phillips, Jr. of Siler City; daughter, Janet K. Bennett of Cameron; brother, Steve Thomas of Greensboro; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hickory Grove Children’s Church, 17721 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek, NC 27207.
