Norvell ‘Hopsing” Agnew

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Norvell “Hopsing” Agnew, 56, Syracuse, N.Y., died Saturday (Sept. 18, 1999) at Community General Hospital.

A native of Salisbury, Mr. Agnew was a son of Rosa Lee McGriff Chandler, Syracuse, and the late Milford S. Agnew, who died in 1969. He was educated in Salisbury schools and was a member of Thomas Street Church of Christ.

He resided in Syracuse for 39 years, retiring in 1993 as an inspector at General Motors. He was a member of Southside Church in Syracuse.

Survivors include wife Patricia A. Agnew, Syracuse; daughters Denise S. McKay, Tamara Gilbert, Chandrea T. Agnew and Brandi Huddleston, all of Syracuse; sons Travis N. Agnew and Adrian Huddleston, both of Syracuse; sisters Mary D. Robinson, Syracuse, and Lisa Nall, Tuscumbia, Ala.; brothers Milford D. Agnew, Syracuse, and William Agnew, Columbus, Ohio.

Services: 1 p.m. today at Southside Church of Christ. Burial at Oakwood Cemetery, both in Syracuse.

Betty Frazier Dewey

BADIN — Betty Frazier Dewey, 76, formerly of Badin, died Tuesday (Sept. 21, 1999) in Salisbury.

Born Aug. 25, 1923, in Winston-Salem, Mrs. Dewey was a daughter of the late John W. and Adelaide Kimel Frazier. Retired from Alcoa Aluminum Co. in 1986, she was a member of Home Moravian Church in Winston-Salem.

Her husband, Charles Dewey, died in 1955, and daughter Cholly Dewey died in 1976.

Survivors include daughters Sue Miles, Raleigh, Dede Feldman, Atlanta, Ga., and Terrie Preslar, Salisbury; sisters Dorothy F. Glenn, Badin, and Nancy F. Erb, Salisbury; brother Howard E. Frazier, Asheville; and six grandchildren.

Graveside services were held this morning at Moravian Graveyard in Winston-Salem, conducted by the Rev. C. Scott Venable.

Vogler &Sons Funeral Home, Main Street Chapel, Winston-Salem, was in charge.

Memorials: Home Moravian Church, Box J, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27108; American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund (for eastern North Carolina flood victims), c/o Elizabeth Hanford Dole Chapter, 1930 Jake Alexander Blvd., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

Betty Freeze Goodnight

KANNAPOLIS — Betty Freeze Goodnight, 68, 1202 Fairway Drive, died Wednesday (Sept. 22, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after six weeks of declining health.

Born April 25, 1931, in Kannapolis, Mrs. Goodnight was a daughter of the late Franklin Edgar and Gladys Oline Freeze. A member of First Presbyterian Church, she formerly worked at Cannon Mills sewing room and in the medical department at Linn-Corriher Mills, Landis.

Survivors include husband Jack M. Goodnight; daughter Mrs. Tom (Dawn Goodnight) Cavin, Kannapolis; son Douglas M. Goodnight, Landis; sister Helen Freeze Blakley, Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Brant Piper. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6: 30-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Fairway Drive.

Memorials: First Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, 201 Vance St., Kannapolis, N.C. 28081.

Ruby Lee Jones

The funeral will be Saturday for Ruby Lee Jones, 93, formerly of 301 Carolina Blvd., who died Saturday (Sept. 18, 1999) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after two years of declining health and five days of serious illness.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Saturday, Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Southeast Congregation, conducted by Jerry Smith. The body was cremated.

Mitchell and Fair Funeral Service was in charge.

Melinda Morgan Sprouse

ALBEMARLE — Melinda Ann Morgan Sprouse, 48, 20827 Biles Road, died Tuesday (Sept. 21, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born March 12, 1951, in Stanly County, Mrs. Sprouse was a daughter of Annie Laura Webb Morgan, Concord, and the late Almer Ray Morgan. A disabled truck driver, she was a member of Centerview Baptist Church.

Survivors include her mother, sons Chris Drye and Patrick Lovell, both of Albemarle; daughter Maggie Sprouse, Albemarle; brother Donnie Morgan, Concord; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. today, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Reese English. Burial, Salem United Methodist Church cemetery.

Rachel Lewis Swaney

MOORESVILLE — Rachel Lewis Swaney, 87, formerly of Smith Street, died Wednesday (Sept. 22, 1999) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 1, 1912, in Iredell County, Mrs. Swaney was a daughter of the late Charles Esker and Roah Lawson Lewis. She retired as a spinner from Mooresville Mills-Templon Chempsun and was a member of Fieldstone Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Marion Orr Swaney; a son, Marcus Orr Swaney; and a grandson.

Survivors include sons Larry A. Swaney, North Wilkesboro, and Joel D. Swaney, Denver; sisters Bernice L. Murdock, North Wilkesboro, Gertrude L. Byers, Mooresville, and Helen L. Sherrill, Troutman; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Fieldstone Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Virginia Cowfer. Burial, Willow Valley Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8: 30 tonight, Cavin Funeral Home.

Gail Harris Tait

Gail Harris Tait, 49, 14581 Earlham Court, Woodbridge, Va., died Monday (Sept. 20, 1999) at her home.

Born June 27, 1950, in Salisbury, Mrs. Tait was a daughter of Mildred Mobley Harris, Salisbury, and the late Henry Harris. She was a 1968 graduate of Dunbar High School and a 1969 graduate of Durham Business College. Retired due to disability from the U.S. Justice Department in Washington, D.C., she formerly worked for the FBI. She was a member of Lake Ridge Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Woodbridge, Va.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include sons Brian, Jeremy and Genon Tail, all of Woodbridge, Va.; and daughter Bianca Tait, Woodbridge, Va.

Mitchell and Fair Funeral Service is in charge.

Beatrice Gicking King

The funeral will be Saturday for Beatrice Gicking King, 75, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Sept. 22, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after 10 days of serious illness.

Born Sept. 16, 1924, in Hazelton, Pa., Mrs. King was a daughter of the late Charles F. and Beatrice Hale Gicking. She was a 1943 graduate of Hazelton High School and attended Perry Business School and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. A veteran of the U.S. Army, she served during World War II.

She had retired after 29 1

She was treasurer of the local AARP chapter, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and co-founder of the Patient Helpers Club.

Her husband, Everette King, died Nov. 3, 1991.

Survivors include sons Arthur Edward King, Winston-Salem, Anderson Eugene King, Lexington, and Charles Everette King, Salisbury; daughters Beatrice King Goodnight, Salisbury, and Beth King Bost, Rockwell; sister Miriam Macek, Great Falls, Va.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Virginia Herring. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. military rites by Rowan County veterans council.

Visitation: 7-8: 30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Memorials: St.Luke’s Episcopal Church, 131 W. Council St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

Charles Junior Lynn

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Sunday for Charles Junior Lynn, 47, 822 Laurel St., who died Wednesday (Sept. 22, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.

Born Sept. 23, 1951, in Rowan County, Mr. Lynn was a son of Frank Lynn, Salisbury, and the late Eula Odessa Vaughters Lynn. A graduate of Boyden High School and Catawba College, he was unit administrator of the Department of Human Resources at Jackson Training School. He was a member of Hall’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Neta White Lynn; daughters Necosha Lynn, Salisbury, and Charle Lynn, of the home; brothers Frank L. Lynn, Salisbury, and MichaelLynn, East Spencer; sister Berbly Wallace, East Spencer; and two grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Omwake-Dearborn Chapel, Catawba College, conducted by Elder Richard Johnson. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

Virgie Mae Haney Mullis

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Virgie Mae Haney Mullis, 90, Big Elm Nursing Center, formerly of Cedar Avenue, who died Wednesday (Sept. 22, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Dec. 21, 1908, in Union County, Mrs. Mullis was a daughter of the late Sidney and Ester Griffin Haney. Formerly employed by Cannon Mills, Plant 1, washcloth department, she was a Primitive Baptist.

Her husband, Chatam J. Mullis, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Wayne Mullis, Salisbury, and Parks Mullis, Mooresville; daughters Elsie Crainshaw, Greenville, S.C., Billie Jo “Peggy” Edgison, Kannapolis, and Johnsie Bridges, Charlotte; brother Bruce Haney, Kannapolis; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Elder F.W. Stack, Dr. Robert Whaley, the Rev. Robert Howard and the Rev. Tom Tucker. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.

James Alton Painter

HARMONY — James Alton Painter, 61, 1324 Tabor Road, died Thursday (Sept. 23, 1999) at Davis Community Hospital, Statesville, after a brief illness.

Born Oct. 13, 1937, in Rowan County, Mr. Painter was a son of the late William A. and Edith Allen Painter. He was a construction superintendent.

Survivors include wife Patricia York Painter; sons David L. Painter, Harmony, and John J. Duchinski, Statesville; daughters Kelly P. Livengood, Harmony, Linda D. Shrum, Yadkinville, Susan D. Smith, Statesville, and Patricia D. Holland, Olin; sisters Norma Lankford, Mary Lynn Swazy and Carol Hallyburton, all of Cleveland; and four grandsons.

Services: 7 tonight, Reavis Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. James E. Cloer. Burial, 11 a.m. Saturday, Macedonia United Methodist Church Cemetery, Olin.

Visitation: Immediately after tonight’s service at the funeral home.
