Ruth Furr Morris

ALBEMARLE — Ruth Furr Morris, 92, 620 Heathwood Drive, died Monday (Sept. 20, 1999) at Forrest Oaks Healthcare Center.

Born June 26, 1907, in Stanly County, Mrs. Morris was a daughter of the late Marshall Filmore and Nora Dennis Furr. She retired as a spinner from Wiscassett Mills, where she had worked for over 55 years. She was a member of North Albemarle Baptist Church.

Her husband, Olin Davis Morris, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Charles Lane Morris, New Orleans, La.; brother Tommy Furr, Albemarle; sister Pauline Burleson, Albemarle; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 4 p.m. Wednesday, Fairview Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Wyman Bolin and the Rev. Grady Taylor.

Visitation: Fairview Memorial Park Mausoleum after the service. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Pauline Burleson, 812 Elaine Drive. The body may be viewed at Hartsell Funeral Home.

Marian I. ‘Julie’ Schultz

Marian I. “Julie” Schultz, 70, Massillon, Ohio, died Sunday (Sept. 19, 1999) at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home, North Canton, Ohio, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Noxapater, Miss., Mrs. Schultz was a daughter of the late Homer and Mamie McCool. She was reared in Kannapolis and Landis. She was a retired nurse.

An active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, she served on various committees. She was also an active member and served on the board of trustees of Massillon Woman’s Club and a member and volunteer of William McKinley Mental Health Society.

Survivors include husband Edward A. Schultz; sons John Schultz, Evansville, Ind., and David Schultz, North Canton, Ohio; sister Irene Beaver, Landis; and five grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Massillon, Ohio, conducted by the Rev. Robert J. Groenke Jr. and the Rev. Karen Tews. The body will be placed in the church at 10. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Atkinson-Feucht-Shaidnagle Funeral Home.

Memorials: St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hearing Impaired Fund, 127 Cherry Road N.E., Massillon, Ohio 44646.

Elizabeth B. Myers

The funeral will be Thursday for Elizabeth Lorraine Brotherton Myers, 56, Brightmoor Nursing Center, who died Sunday (Sept. 19, 1999) at the center.

Born Feb. 22, 1943, in Rowan County, Mrs. Myers was a daughter of the late Donald C. and Margaret E. Shipp Brotherton. A graduate of J.C. Price High School, she was a former legal secretary and of the AME Zion faith.

Survivors include daughters Simone Monique Brotherton, Charleston, S.C., and Natasha Christina Brotherton, Rockwell; brothers James Monroe Brotherton, Portsmouth, Va., and Donald C. Brotherton Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.; sisters Ruth Williams, Orlando, Fla., Catherine Brotherton and Mary Gaither, both of Salisbury, Doris Brotherton, Spencer, and Judy Brotherton, Philadelphia, Pa.; and one grandchild.

Services: 3: 30 p.m. Thursday, Rowan Funeral Service Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mary Hardin. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: 2: 30-3: 30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Doris Brotherton, 504 Fourth St., Spencer.

Arvester Colbert Smith

The funeral will be Friday for Arvester Allene Colbert Smith, 89, Autumn Care of Salisbury, who died Sunday (Sept. 19, 1999) at the nursing center after several years of declining health.

Born Dec. 17, 1909, in Rowan County, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Viola Colbert Fisher, Cleveland. She was a graduate of J.C. Price High School. Retired, she was employed by the Salisbury Holiday Inn in housekeeping. She was a Jehovah’s Witness.

Her husband, James William Smith, died in 1945.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include sons Bobby M. Smith and Leroy Colbert, both of Salisbury; brothers William Fisher, Cleveland, and Booker T. Fisher, Charlotte; sister Emma Lewis, Cleveland; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Shady Grove Baptist Church, East Spencer, conducted by the Rev. John G. Gaston. Burial, Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Friday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of son Bobby Smith, 1312 Standish St.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

Katie Lou Cowan Garner

STATESVILLE — Katie Lou “Mama Katie” Cowan Garner, 85, 175 Hezekiah Lane, died Sunday (Sept. 18, 1999) at Iredell Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Born Sept. 30, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. Garner was a daughter of the late John Graham and Bertha Ellis Cowan and stepdaughter of FrankCowan. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she joined Cedar Grove AME Zion Church at an early age.She later joined Cameron Presbyterian Church, where she was active on various committees.

Her husband of 65 years, Hezekiah Garner, whom she married Sept 25, 1930, died in October 1995. Five children, Howard Garner, Willie Lucille Sherrill, John William Garner, Thelma Garner Mills and Ivory L. Garner, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Norman H. Garner, Statesville; daughters Dorothy G. Sloan, Frances G. Wilson, Bettie G. Evans, and Bertha G. Davidson, all of Statesville; brothers Monroe L. Cowan, Salisbury, and Jack Cowan, Philadelphia, Pa.; sister Louise Cowan, Philadelphia, Pa.; 29 grandchildren, including Calvin Sherrill, who was reared in the home, and DarrylDavidson, who she assisted in rearing; 43 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Cameron Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. J.L. Spears. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Hezekiah Lane.

Geneva Mae Davis Gilbert

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Thursday for Geneva Mae Davis Gilbert, 78, Five Oaks Nursing Home, formerly of Brown Road, who died Monday (Sept. 20, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born June 29, 1921, in Stanly County, Mrs. Gilbert was a daughter of the late H.T. and Nealie Griffin Davis. A graduate of China Grove High School, she was a homemaker and member of Corriher Heights Baptist Church.

Her husband, Rastus Gilbert, died Dec. 2, 1987.

Survivors include daughters Carol G. Stubbs, Gold Hill, and Betty G. Freeman, Concord; brothers the Rev. Wendell Davis, Statesville, and Arthur Davis, West Palm Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by her brother, the Rev. WendellDavis. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of granddaughter Kim Bumgardner, 111 S. East Ave., Kannapolis.

Jettie Lee Johnson Lisk

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Jettie Lee Johnson Lisk, 81, formerly of 703 Evelyn Ave., who died Monday (Sept. 20, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born June 9, 1918, in Alexander County, Mrs. Lisk was a daughter of the late Jonas F. and Nancy Elizabeth Mayberry Johnson. Retied from Cannon Mills sewing room after 34 years, she was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church.

Her husband, Rayvon Arnold Lisk, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Mrs. Don (Nancy) Argo, Kannapolis; brother Staley Johnson, Kannapolis; sisters Mrs. Gene (Eloise)Allman and Mrs. Elwood (Lois) Faulkner, both of Kannapolis; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Franklin Heights Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Townsend and the Rev. Rick Miller. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Memorials: Franklin Heights Baptist Church, 526 Wright Ave., Kannapolis, N.C. 28083.

Clarence‘Buck’ Loflin

The funeral will be Thursday for Clarence Edward “Buck”Loflin, 79, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Sept. 21, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health.

Born March 15, 1920, in Rowan County, Mr. Loflin, a son of the late Jack and Beulah Davis Loflin, was educated in the Salisbury city schools. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he received the Bronze Star and World War II Victory Medal for his service in World War II. He retired in 1972 from Cartex Mill and in 1997 from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. He was a member of North Main Baptist Church.

His wife, Grace Grubb Loflin, died July 21, 1985.

Survivors include brothers Arnold Loflin, Salisbury, Clyde Loflin, Rockwell, and Jack LoflinJr., Spencer.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, North Main Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dale Robertson. The body will be placed in the church at 10: 30. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8: 30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Memorials: North Main Baptist Church, 1501 N. Main St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

James Wayne Martin

MOUNT PLEASANT — James Wayne Martin, 57, 45 Moose Road, died Tuesday (Sept. 21, 1999).

Born Sept. 17, 1942, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Martin was a son of Carrie Foil Martin, Concord, and the late Oliver Martin. He formerly owned and operated Martin’s Battery Salvage, Kannapolis, for 16 years. He later worked for Terminal Trucking Co., Concord, for 13 years.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Vickie Lancaster Martin; sons James W. Martin Jr., Concord, Joseph R. Martin, Kannapolis, and Brandon W. Martin, China Grove; stepdaughters Christy Bass, Concord, and Stephanie Eudy, Fayetteville; stepson Steven Barnhardt, Charlotte; one brother; one sister; one grandson; and seven step-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. John Boyd. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 2: 30-4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Moose Road.

Memorials: Arthritis Foundation, 1135 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary, N.C. 27511.

Clelia Eakins Myers

The funeral will be Thursday for Clelia Eakins Myers, 87, 2215 Enon Church Road, formerly of Spencer, who died Tuesday (Sept. 21, 1999) at her home after 2 1/2 years of declining health and six weeks of serious illness.

Born Oct. 10, 1911, in Spencer, Mrs. Myers was a daughter of the late Bert A. and Sallie Dulin Eakins. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and Spencer High School. A homemaker, she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Her husband, Robert L. Myers, died Oct. 25, 1966, and a daughter, Rosalie Myers Young, died Dec. 1, 1995.

Survivors include son Robert L. Myers Jr., Spencer; daughters Mrs. Ray (Carolyn)Casey, Salisbury, and Mrs. Sam (Dorothy) Paul, Conway, S.C.; brothers Toby Eakins, Spencer, Joe Eakins, Kannapolis, and Ronnie Eakins, Seattle, Wash.; sister Helen Alexander, Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Funeral Mass of Resurrection, 1: 30 p.m. Thursday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas P. Clements.Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: Prayer service, 7 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, followed by visitation. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Carolyn Casey, 2215 Enon Church Road.

Memorials: ARC of Rowan County, 1315 Van Nuys St., or Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice, 825-A W. Henderson St., both Salisbury, N.C. 28144.
