JOYCE ELIZABETH PERRY SHORT
Joyce Elizabeth Perry Short, 97, of 4147 Siler City-Snow Camp Road, Siler City passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Short was born in Chatham County on January 2, 1915, the daughter of Edna Herford and Dura (Jenks) Perry. She was the manager of The Siler City ABC Shop for children’s clothes. Joyce was the oldest member of Rocky River Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the WMU. She enjoyed bowling, needle point, gardening and working with flowers. She also loved children and spending time with them. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, P. D. Short.

The family wishes to express their appreciation and a special thanks to caregivers Becky Powers, Vivian Wrenn and all the nurses at Hospice of Chatham County.

She is survived by one daughter, Durene S. Phillips and husband Lynn of Siler City; one son, William Lee Buckner and wife Kay of Siler City; one brother, M. L. Perry of Durham; grandchildren, Jeffrey Craig Phillips and fiance’ Heather Marie Cromwell of Raleigh, Henry Buckner and wife Lori of Siler City, Annette Hall and husband Douglas of Holly Springs; three great-grandchildren; a step-grandson, David Hunter Phillips and wife Andrea of Fayetteville; a step-granddaughter, Shannon Phillips Miller and husband Brad of Westchester, PA and five step-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, July 12, 2012 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Rocky River Baptist Church, 4436 Siler City-Snow Camp Road, Siler City. The funeral will be Thursday, July 12, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Rocky River Baptist Church with Rev. Gene Booker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Rocky River Baptist Church Building Fund, 4436 Siler City-Snow Camp Road, Siler City, NC 27344 or to Hospice of Chatham, P O Box 1537, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

THOMAS NEWTON HEILMAN
August 10, 1929 – June 25, 2012
Thomas N. Heilman, 82, of Pittsboro, NC, passed away Monday, June 25, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Heilman was born on August 10, 1929, in Muncy, PA to the late Frederick Donnelly Heilman and the late Bertha Frances Waltman Heilman. He was raised by his Mom and his Uncle Frederick Lee Waltman, who has preceded him in death.

Tom was class president of the Muncy High graduating class of 1947. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and was sent to combat in Korea, where he earned a purple heart. He proudly served for ten years. After he left the Army, Tom studied at Elizabethtown College and graduated from Penn State. He retired from AMP, Inc. as an Environmental Approval’s Engineer after 36 years of employment in Harrisburg, PA.

Tom was a Member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Enola, PA. He also was a member to various clubs and fraternal organizations, such as: Perseverance Royal Arch, Chapter 21; the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, where he was a life time member; Pilgrim Commandery No. 11 Knights Templar; Harrisburg Council #7 of the Royal & Select Master Masons; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Harrisburg, PA; a member of the Penn State Alumni Association; and a member in the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Grace E. (Risser) Heilman; a daughter, Brenda (Heilman) Tillman and her husband Greg, of Vass, NC; a son, Newt Heilman and his wife Karen, of Chapel Hill, NC; granddaughters, Becca and Sara Heilman, Andrea (Tillman) Baker and her husband Dustin; grandsons, Alex Tillman, Jeremy Tillman and his wife Deanne; and two great-grandchildren, Mayes and Reese Baker.

A memorial service for Mr. Heilman will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2012, in the chapel of Hall-Wynne funeral service, Pittsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to UNC Hospice, PO Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312, or to The American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 73123-1718.

PEGGY ANN McDANIEL STINSON
Peggy Ann McDaniel Stinson, 51, of Siler City died Tuesday, (06-19-2012) at Tara Plantation, Carthage.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Stinson was born in Chatham County on October 7, 1960, the daughter of Robert and Rosa (Frazier) McDaniel. She had been employed by Lowes Food.

Survivors include two daughters, Sherry Renay Stinson, Jennifer Ann Stinson; parents, Robert and Rosa McDaniel; brothers, Buddy, Michael, Johnny McDaniel, all of Siler City; and seven grandchildren.

CARRIE PHILLIPS BREWER
Carrie Phillips Brewer, 89, of Bennett died Saturday (06-23-2012) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held Tuesday (06-26-2012) at 2 p.m. at Pine Mountain Friends Church, where she was a member, with Rev. Joey Greene and Rev. Robert L. Kidd. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Brewer was a Chatham county native and had worked at the Cotton Mill in High Falls, then later at Southern Garment in Robbins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell Brewer.

Survivors include her son, Howard Brewer of Bennett; sisters, Pauline Maness of Greensboro, Esther Craven of Asheboro; and two grandchildren.

HENRY ARVIL WELCH
Henry Arvil Welch, 96, of Bennett passed away Sunday (06-24-2012) at Siler City Care and Rehabilitation.

Funeral services were held Wednesday (06-27-2012) at 11 a.m. at Bennett Baptist Church where he was the oldest living member, with Rev. Tim Strider officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Military Honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

Mr. Welch was a Chatham County native and the son of the late Joe and Ada Scott Welch. He served in the Army in WW II in the 743 Tank Battalion. After that, he worked as a fixer at Burlington Industries. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Joey Welch, and brothers, Lynn, Lester, Frank, Howard, and Porter.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Maness Welch of the home; son, Darrell S. Welch of Robbins; daughters, Judy W. Hussey of Robbins, Connie W. Maness of Bennett, Faye Jean Sutton of Burlington; brothers, Nuby Welch of Farmer, Ted Welch of Bennett; sister, Nellie W. Brewer of Bennett; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

CHRISTA FAITH McNEILL
Miss Christa Faith McNeill 21, of Bennett died Monday (06-25-2012) .

Funeral services will be held Friday (06-29-2012) at 2 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church with Dr. Neal Jackson and Rev. Jamie Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Miss McNeill was born in Orange County and was a graduate of North Moore High School. She attended Sandhills Community College, and was over the Tire and Auto Department at the Siler City Walmart. She attended Beulah Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Betty Shelton and grandfather, Wilton Strickland.

Survivors include her parents, Mike and Clara Shelton McNeill of the home; brothers, Christopher and Steven McNeill of the home; .step-brother, Jeremy Shelton of Bennett; grandfather, Thurman and step-grandmother, Royalene Shelton of Seagrove, and grandmother, Etta Louise Strickland of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be held Thursday (06-28-2012) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel and other times at her residence.

Joyce-Brady Chapel is serving the McNeill family.

NANCY WOMBLE DUNN
Nancy Kathleen Womble Dunn, 94, of 1705 Elmer Moore Road, Bonlee, died Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the home of her brother.

Mrs. Dunn was born in Chatham County on December 27, 1917, the daughter of Floyd Eugene Womble and Delilah Ward Womble. She was a member of the Bonlee Baptist Church where over the years she taught Sunday School to all ages. Nancy was a retired Postmaster of the Bonlee office as well as co-owner of Bonlee Hardware. In the 1940s she owned and managed the Ideal Beauty Shop in Siler City. She learned the beautician trade by virtue of a scholarship awarded her upon graduation from Siler City High School to attend Darbour Beauty College in Greensboro. Nancy also served terms as president of the Bonlee Elementary and Chatham Central High School P.T.A., the Bonlee Women’s Club, the Chatham County Home Extension Club, and was a member of the Goldston Medical Center Board. From the 1950s into the 1970s she also served often as a substitute teacher at Bonlee Elementary School.

While a member of Bonlee Baptist, Mrs. Dunn kept a place in her heart for her home church of Loves Creek as well as nearby Sandy Branch. Community and education were dear to Mrs. Dunn and for years she worked with local schools and was a strong supporter of the Chatham Central Concert Choir. A homemaker but also a merchant and postal employee, Mrs. Dunn was energetic and with her husband Alex, participated in many local campaigns for civic betterment, both official and unofficial.

Mrs. Dunn was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Glenn Dunn, Sr.; her parents; sisters, Emma Rue Yanchurak, Mary Sue Womble, Burdine Womble, Leisel Womble; and brother, Lloyd Womble.

She is survived by two sons, Alex Glenn Dunn, Jr. and wife, Nancy Tyson Dunn of Bear Creek, Alvis Eugene Dunn and wife, Leah McGinnis Dunn of Greensboro: granddaughter, Delilah Jane Dunn of Greensboro; sisters, Lila Brewer, Irma Beal, Nadine Short; brother, Lynton Womble (all of Siler City); sisters-in-law, Louise Womble of Siler City, Ethel Gaines of Bear Creek, and Edna Dunn of Greensboro, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Special friends and neighbors, Carlyle Gaines, Thurman and Emma Jean Burke, Claude and Inez Cook, and Pat and Linda Murrow were close and caring.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 26, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, and at other times at the home of Glenn Dunn, 705 Dean Beaver Road, Bear Creek.

The service will be Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Sandy Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Darrel Williams and Rev. Marc Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

LEROY HAMMER
Leroy Hammer, 85, of Goldston died Thursday, (06-14-2012) at his residence.

Funeral services were held Monday, (06-18-2012) at 11 a.m. at Goldston Baptist Church with Rev. Mitch Roginsky, Rev. Mitch Watson and Rev. David Hicks officiating. Burial followed at the Goldston Cemetery.

Mr. Hammer was born in Chatham County on April 26, 1927, the son of John W. and Mattie (Cox) Hammer. He was a member of Goldston Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class and a former deacon. Leroy was an Army Veteran of WWII and had been employed with William Barber Automotive. Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Beulah (Hancock) Hammer, son, Douglas W. Hammer of Cary; daughter, Lee H. Allenbaugh of Chapel Hill; sister, Evie H. Phillips of Winston-Salem; and one grandson.

Memorials may be made to Goldston Baptist Church, PO Box 100, Goldston, NC 27252.

JOSEPHINE JACOBS PEAVEY
Josephine Jacobs Peavey, 80, of Tabor City, died Thursday, June 14, 2012 in Siler City.

Born in Columbus County, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Blanche Waddell Jacobs. She was the widow of the late William Lawrence Peavey, Sr., and was preceded in death by one son, Markham Daniel Peavey, one sister and two brothers.

She is survived by one son, William Lawrence Peavey, Jr. and wife Pamela of Siler City; two sisters, Bobbie Ward of Whiteville, Maxine Reaves of Avon Park, FL; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Friday, June 15, 2012 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 11 a.m. in Inman Funeral Home Chapel, Tabor City with Rev. Clark Whittington officiating. Burial followed in Ocean Woods Cemetery, Myrtle Beach, SC.

NELLIE TALLY GAINES
Nellie Tally Gaines, 92, of 1480 Delphus Stinson Road, Goldston, died Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Gaines was born in Chatham County on May 24, 1920, the daughter of Fredrick Thurman and Matie Brewer Tally. She was the oldest member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Nellie enjoyed doing word search, reading, yard work and riding. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter T. Gaines, sisters, Mabel T. Phillips, Marjorie T. Gaines, Allene T. Beck and brother, Victor Tally.

She is survived by one daughter, Audrey G. Culberson and husband, Robert of Siler City; two sons, Dewey Gaines and wife, Janice of Randleman, Steve Gaines and wife, Tina of Goldston; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mary Tally of Randleman.

The family received friends Sunday, June 17, 2012 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City and other times at the home of the daughter, Audrey G. Culberson, 2746 Silk Hope-Liberty Road, Siler City.

The funeral was held Monday, June 18, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 17721 NC Hwy 902, Bear Creek with Rev. Darrell Garner and Rev. Greg Burriss officiating. Burial followed in Gaines Grove Cemetery

Memorials may be made to Chatham County Relay for Life, c/o Betty Terry, 519 S. Second Ave., Siler City, NC 27344; or to Hospice of UNC, P O Box 1077, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

MONA CARPENTER FIRMAGE
Mrs. Mona Carpenter Firmage, 72, of Sanford died Sunday (06-03-2012) at her home.

The Celebration of Life service was held at 4 p.m. Monday, (06-11-2012) at Swan Station Baptist Church with Pastor Russell Blackman presiding. A private interment was held at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Firmage was born in Granville County, July 8, 1939, a daughter of Harvey N. Carpenter, Sr. and Callie Elizabeth Couch. She was a US Navy veteran during the Viet Nam war. She was a retired photographer, and attended Swan Station Baptist Church. In addition to parents and siblings, Mrs. Firmage was preceded in death by her son, Gregory Scott Firmage.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Leroy Firmage of the home; son, Anthony Firmage of Sanford; daughter, Debra Firmage Longacre of Oceanside, CA; brother, Carry Brooks Carpenter of Garner; sister, Stella Jane Thomas of Oak City, OK; and one granddaughter
