ADA MAE SMITH DARK

Ada Mae Smith Dark, 58 of Spring Lake died Tuesday, (03-29-2005) at Cape Fear Valley Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, (04-03-2005) at Jordan Grove A.M.E. Zion Church with James Smith, Jr., officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Dark was a native of Chatham County and a housewife.

Survivors include her father, Charlie Smith; brothers, Theodore Smith, Pittsboro, Henry Smith, Raleigh, Thomas Smith, Jacksonville, Jimmy Smith, Siler City; sisters, Brenda Snipes, Pittsboro, Virginia Nettles, Fayetteville, Florence White, Burlington, Marie Headen, and Shirley Sutton, both of Siler City.

CHARLIE PRICE, SR.

Mr. Charlie Price, Sr., 85, of Rose Manor Convalescent Home in Durham died Saturday (04-02-2005).

Funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Saturday (04-09-2005) at Haw River Missionary Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 12 noon to 1 pm, prior to the service.

Wake will be held Friday, (04-09-2005), from 7 to 8 pm at Jones Funeral Home, 112 S. Graham Street, Chapel Hill.

At other times, the family will receive friends at the home of Ruth Bernice Edwards at 1208 Hatch Road, Chapel Hill.

JOHN HENRY SMITH, JR.

Mr. John Henry Smith, Jr. 62, of Bennett died Wednesday, (03-30-2005) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, (04-02-2005) at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with Rev. Kenneth Huggins officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Smith was a native of Portsmouth, Va., retired from Lazar Industries in Siler City and a charter member of Grace Community Fellowship Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dianna Lowdermilk Smith of the home; sons, Allen Hornaday of Coleridge, Tim Smith of Bear Creek, Phillip Smith of Climax, Stephen Wright of Washington, D.C., Mark Wright of Tennessee; daughters, Christy Miller of High Point, Cindy Pennell of Siler City; and 15 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be directed to ACS, Relay for Life, c/o Betty Terry, 519 South Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344.

MARY EMMA HEADEN JONES

Mary Emma Headen Jones, 74, of Goldston died Thursday (03-17-2005) at UNC Memorial Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, (03-21-2005) at Roberts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Sampson Buie, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Jones was a native of Chatham County and was retired from the Chatham County Health Department. He was a member of Roberts Chapel Baptist Church where she was on the Deaconess Board, a member of the Oppie Jones Sunday school class and the missionary circle.

Survivors include her husband, James Wallace Jones; daughters, Sheena Boyd of Charlotte, Waverlyn Royals, New Bern; and son, Andrei Jones of Greensboro.

DENNIS LEE HOWELL

Mr. Dennis Lee Howell, 45 of Portland, OR, died Sunday, (03-27-2005).

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at Rock Springs Baptist Church cemetery in Pittsboro with Pastor Chris Hilliard officiating.

Mr. Howell was born in and was a former resident of Pittsboro, and had worked as a commercial painter.

Survivors include his daughter, Amber Howell of Oregon; half-brother, Anthony Bouldin of Timberlake; half-sisters, Diane Robinson of Hillsborough, Cathy Weaver of Durham; three grandchildren; and step-father, Boyd Ray Darnell of Durham.

Memorials may be made to Rock Springs Baptist Church, Cemetery Fund, 29 Rock Springs Church Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

EDWARD ROCHELLE MILLIKEN

Edward Rochelle Milliken, 64, of Siler City died Sunday (04-03-2005) at The Chatham Hospital

Funeral services were held at 2 pm on Wednesday, (04-06-2005) at Corinth A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. Corey B. Little officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Milliken was a native of Chatham County, a retired employee of N.C. DOT and a member of Corinth A.M.E. Zion Church. He was a member of Light of the World Lodge #711, James T. Diggs Consistory and El Jebel Temple #97.

Survivors include his wife, Ella G. Milliken of the home; sons, Edward R. Milliken, Jr. of Raleigh, William Glen Thompson of Norfolk, Va; brother, Michael Milliken, Siler City; sister, Massaline Stith, Hyattsville, Md.; and six grandchildren.

GERALD WAYNE (CHUB) GLOVER

Gerald Wayne (Chub) Glover, 62, of Siler City died Friday, (04-01-2005), at his home.

Graveside services were held at 12 noon Monday, (04-04-2005) at Corinth A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery with Rev. Cory Little officiating.

Mr. Glover was a native of Chatham County, a graduate of Chatham High School and a retired farmer.

Survivors include daughters, Tomekia Glover, Greensboro, Rhonda Goldston, Bear Creek; mother, Edna Glover of the home; sister, Betty Tyson, Siler City; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

AMY ROCHELLE TEETER STERNOWSKI

Amy Rochelle Teeter Sternowski, 23, of 342 Mountview Court, Concord died Friday, March 25, 2005 at NorthEast Medical Center.

Mrs. Sternowski was born October 29, 1981 in Sacramento, CA. She was employed at Carmines on the Boulevard - bartender.

Survivors include her husband, Brian Sternowski of the home; son, Dylan Sternowski, also of the home; parents, Timothy and Debra Higgins; brothers, Kelly Teeter of Sanford, Kris Higgins, Konner Higgins, Kyle Higgins, and sister, Ashley Higgins.

Burial will be at a later date in Sanford.

JESSE SLOCUM SMITH

Jesse Slocum Smith, 93, of Siler City died Tuesday (03-22-2005) at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 3 pm on Friday, (03-25-2005) at West End United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Whittaker officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was a native of Chatham County, a member of West End United Methodist Church and was retired from Collins and Aikman, Siler City plant. He was a WW II Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Smith of Siler City; and a brother, Gurney Smith of Siler City.

JOHN WILLIAM LEE

John William Lee, 94, of Moncure died Wednesday (03-16-2005) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services were held at 3 pm Sunday, (03-20-2005) at Ward Memorial Church in Sanford with Rev. James B. Elliott, Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the Bryant Memorial Garden.

Mr. Lee was a member of Ward Memorial Church, worked for Carolina Power & Light and retired from EBASCO. He co-authored a book entitled Flok Wisdom and Mother Wit in Politics of Culture.

Survivors include his wife, Hattie Mae Goodwin of the home; sons, Harold and Hermon Lee, both of New York, Leon and Raymond Lee, both of Moncure, Willard Lee of St. Paul; daughters, Joan Bradley and Amentha Davis, both of Moncure, Carolyn Bradley, Bronx, NY, Cledia Holland, Providence, RI, Vanessa Newby, Sanford; 41 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren.

DARLENE MARY KELLEY MITCHELL

Darlene Kelley Mitchell, 55 of Siler City died Thursday (03-24-2005) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Memorial services and burial will be held at 12 Noon on Sunday, (04-03-2005) at Chatham Memorial Park.

Mrs. Mitchell was a native of New York and Deli manager with Lowes Foods, Pittsboro.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Lynn Mitchell of New Hill; daughters, Sandy Johnson of Climax, Julie Hockenberry of Reidsville; son, Danny Hockenberry of Siler City; sisters, Karen K. Henson, Siler City, Patricia K. Neuch, Jupiter, FL; brothers, Jack Kelley, West Palm Beach, FL, Mike Kelley, Sanford, Jerry Kelley, Sabastin, FL; and six grandchildren

REV. THOMAS J. ATNIP

Rev. Thomas Jefferson Atnip, age 82, of Siler City, died Monday, March 21, 2005 at Universal Health Care of Ramseur.

A graveside service was held on Friday, March 25, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery, Asheboro with Dr. Richard Crider and Rev. David Schwartz officiating.

Rev. Atnip was a native of Jackson County, AL and was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving with the 551st Airborne Division. He was a former construction superintendent, formerly employed with McDevitt and Street, Edison Foard, and T. R. Tucker, all of Charlotte. Rev. Atnip was a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church in Asheboro.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Leoda Smith Atnip; daughter, Janice Atnip Massey and her husband Richard of Rock Hill, SC; son, Donald Atnip and his wife Sharon of Charlotte, NC; granddaughters, Hillary and Christina King; grandson, Brian Massey and his wife, Allison; grandson, Doug Massey; great-grandchildren, Drew and Reese Massey; sisters, Susie Hambrick and Emma Sisk, both of Scottsboro, AL and one brother, James Robert Atnip of Wilson, NC.

Memorials may be made to Eastern North Carolina Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Duke University Medical Center, PO Box 3600, Durham, NC 27710.

The family extends a special thanks to the staff of Cross Road Alzheimer's Center and the staff of Universal health Care of Ramseur whose love and care helped make his last days comfortable.

JOHNNY RUSSELL SCOTT

Johnny Russell Scott, 51, of 511 Effie Welch Road, Bear Creek died Saturday, March 26, 2005 at his residence.

Graveside services were held Monday, March 28, 2005 at 11 am at The Scott Family Cemetery in Bear Creek with Rev. Darrell Williams officiating.

Mr. Scott was a native of Chatham County, a member of Tyson's Creek Baptist Church and had worked for Townsend, Inc. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jackie Burke Scott.

Survivors include his son, Pate R. Scott of Bear Creek; father, J. Russell Scott and step-mother, Carlotta of Bear Creek; sisters, Sharon S. Milholen and husband Barry, Maria S. Cutchins and husband Rick, all of Siler City; and Lisa Scott of Asheboro.
