Mr. Clarence Spergon Reel
Mr. Clarence Spergon Reel, 83, of Marion, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2004 at the Mission Hospital, St. Josephs Campus, Asheville.
Born September 14, 1920 in McDowell County, he was a son of the late Burton Reel and Eva Kaylor Reel. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Aleatha Hollifield Reel and their daughter, Dianne Reel Watts; by his second wife, Wilma Bright Reel; and also by two brothers, Lynn and Floyd Reel; and two sisters, Pearl Reel Gibbs and Florence Reel.
Mr. Reel was a member of the Cross United Methodist Church. He worked for Burke Construction and for Southern Desk. He traveled extensively from Maryland to Mississippi installing church furniture.
Mr. Reel is survived by his wife, Maxine Padgett Reel of Marion; two stepsons, Gary and Alan Mainer; six stepgrandchildren; and also a special nephew, Earl Reel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cross United Methodist Church, 73 Dewey Brown Drive, Marion, N.C. 28752.
Mrs. Ida Irene Giles Bobbitt
Mrs. Ida Irene Giles Bobbitt, 86, of Church Street in Glen Alpine died Monday November 15, 2004 at her residence . She was born August 12, 1918 in Burke County to the late John Hampton Giles and Ida Pitts Giles. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty three years Hilliard F. Bobbitt ; daughter Beth Aultman; brothers Ernest Giles, Robert Giles, Yates Giles, Carl Giles, Ned Giles, John Reid Giles, Ralph J. Giles ; sisters Bessie LaFevers, Catherine Butler and Annie Wall.
Mrs. Bobbitt was very active in her beloved Glen Alpine United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Afternoon Inspirational Group of the United Methodist Women. She had graduated from the Glen Alpine High School.
Irene is survived by her sons Hampton Bobbitt and wife Vickie of Florence S.C., Bracey Bobbitt of Nebo; her grandchildren Daxton Bobbitt, Ivy Bobbitt, Bracey Bobbitt, Brad Bobbitt, Bret Bobbitt and Chris Aultman.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Thursday, November 18, 2004 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with the Reverend Frank Gordon officiating. Burial will follow at the Glen Alpine Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 2 till 3 PM Thursday at Kirksey Funeral in Morganton.

J.C. Banks
J.C. Banks, age 79, of Marion, died Saturday, April 16, 2005 at Britthaven of Morganton.
Born in Madison Co., NC to the late Douglas “D.H.” Banks and Los Ingle Banks, he used to work as a laborer at a lumber yard. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Hutchins Banks.
Surviving Mr. Banks are one daughter, Frances Vaughn; four grandchildren, Anita Ollis, Penny Smith, Sherry Buff and Jeff Vaughn; two great grandchildren, Stacy and Quintin Smith; special nieces and nephews, Doug Banks, Shirley McCole and Lisa, Sherry, Nancy, Tina and Stacy; and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 Monday, April 18, 2005 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home with Mr. Banks’ great nephew, Todd McCole speaking. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Beatrice Davis Vess
Beatrice Davis Vess, age 74, of Belchertown, Massachusetts, formerly of Marion, NC and Old Fort, NC died Monday, September 5, 2005 at her residence.
Born in McDowell County to the late Johnson and Ina Skipper Davis, she was a retired employee of United Merchants for 36 years and a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Old Fort, NC. Beatrice loved her God unconditionally. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her life was dedicated to her family and her church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Anthony James Robertson.
Surviving Mrs. Vess are her husband of fifty-seven years, Jesse J. Vess; one daughter, Meredith Zaiken and husband, Elliott of Belchertown, MA; a brother, Eugene Davis; one sister, Katherine Davis Noblitt and husband, Paul; 3 grandchildren: Amanda Whittemore of N.Y., Lindi McCaffrey and husband, of Fort Collins, Colorado, Heather Robertson of Greenville, SC; a great grandchild, Kyla Robertson of Greenville, SC. Also, 3 nieces and 7 nephews survive.
Services will be held 2:00 o’clock Saturday, September 10, 2005 in the Old Fort Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Revs. Ernest Harris and Harold Pullium will officiate with burial following in Cherry Springs Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Bennett Avery
Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Bennett Avery, 87, formerly of Waightstill Street in Morganton died Saturday, September 6, 2003 at Grace Heights Nursing. Born July 16, 1916 in Buncombe County she was the daughter of the late Leland Ivy Bennett and Mary Walker Bennett. Her brothers Hugh Bennett, Dick Bennett, Carl Bennett, Harold Bennett and a sister Martha Bennett Baker preceded her in death.
Mrs. Avery was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morganton, where she had been active in the Women of the Presbyterian Church Circle and been a Cub Scout Leader . She had retired from Western Carolina Center and after retirement had become a volunteer for Western Carolina Center for many years. In her early years, she along with her sister Martha had been beauticians with their father Leland.
She is survived by: her husband of sixty one years Joe W. Avery Sr. of Morganton ; son Joe W. Avery Jr. and wife Trina of Morganton ; daughter Mary Shelton Morrow and husband Bill of Morganton; sister Betty Bennett Nichols of Morganton; grandchildren Sarah Elizabeth Mooney, Kate Nicewicz, Waightstill Avery, Ben Morrow and a great grandchild Mary Helen Mooney.
A graveside service will be held 10:00 AM Monday, September 8, 2003 at Forest Hill Cemetery, with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 AM, at the First Presbyterian Church in Morganton with the Reverend Doctor Matthew Brown officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday following the Memorial Service in the First Presbyterian Church Parlor.

Margie Marie Landrum Brown
Margie Marie Landrum Brown, 79, of Marion, died Monday, May 3, 2004 at Mountain Area Hospice in Asheville after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Nathaniel Brown.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Rachael Harris and the late Miles Landrum. She is survived by three sons, Thomas and Jerry Brown, both of Marion, and James Brown (Lola) of Morganton; four daughters, Linda Wilkerson (Alfred) and Margie Logan (Albert), both of Lake Lure, Virginia Hausley (Ronald) of Old Fort and Candas Corpening (Hubert) of Marion; one sister, Mary Willie Logan (Willee) of Rutherfordton; two sister-in-laws, Margaret Crawford of Richmond, Va. and Darlene Landrum of Lake Lure; 22 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes before services. The family will receive friends at 229 Morgan St., Marion, at all other times.
Mrs. Alberta Parker
Mrs. Alberta Parker, 91, of Old Fort, died, Tuesday, November 16, 2004, at her residence. Born March 23, 1913, in Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Wilburn Burleson and Mollie Allen. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Parker was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl Caney Parker, a son, Floyd E. Parker and a daughter, Peggy Ann Parker. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Clark Parker, of Old Fort and David Parker;
two daughters, Barbara Kelly, of Arizona and Wanda Winslow, of Asheville; also surviving are sixteen grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Parker will be held 11:00AM, Friday, November 19, 2004, at the Old Fort Kirksey Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Milton Hollifield and Ray Stockton officiating. Interment will follow at the Azalea United Methodist Church Cemetery, Swannanoa. The family will receive friends 9:00AM-11:00AM, prior to the services at the Funeral Home.
Julia Geneva Gurley Elliott
Julia Geneva Gurley Elliott, 90, of Marion, died Saturday, April 16, 2005, at McDowell Nursing Center. Born October 29, 1914, in Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Gurley and Frances Gibbs Gurley. Mrs. Elliott was a homemaker, loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Surviving are her husband, Albert Ammons “Ab” Elliott; two daughters, Norma Jean McMahan and husband, Harvey of Marion and Joyce Ann Reece and husband, Ray of Drexel; seven grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Elliott will be held 2:00PM, Monday, April 18, 2005, in McCall Memorial Chapel at Kirksey Funeral Home, with Mr. Tom Nussbaum and Mr. Robert Synan officiating. Interment will follow at Liberty Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Services at the funeral home.
Letha Estelle Ellison
Letha Estelle Ellison, age 86, of Marion, died Friday, March 28, 2003 in Autumn Care of Marion.
Born in Cocke County, Tn. to the late Jesse Lonzo and Zola Romine Mann she was a housekeeper and practical nurse and was a member of Nebo First Baptist Church.
Surviving are her step-mother, Hassie Owenby Mann of Marion, N.C.; two daughters, Christine Ellison Craig and Betty Ellison Troutman both of Nebo, N.C.; one brother, Rev. John Mann of Marion, N.C.; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Rev. Joseph E. McGaha will officiate with burial following in Nebo First Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ruby Mae Condrey Thomas
Ruby Mae Condrey Thomas, age 81, of Marion, died Sunday, September 7, 2003 in Autumn Care of Marion.
Born in Rutherford County to the late Abe L. and Lucinda Wortman Condrey, she was a retired employee of Southern Devices of Morganton and a member of East Marion Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late Calvin D. Thomas.
Surviving are three sons, Stan Thomas and wife, Kathy and Keith Thomas and wife, Debbie both of Greensboro, N.C. and Jerry Thomas of Marion, N.C.; one daughter, Kathy Ann Hunt and husband, Tom of Valdese, N.C.; one brother, Garland Condrey of Old Fort, N.C.; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Services will be held 3:00 o’clock Wednesday, September 10th, in McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Rev.Dr. Michael F. Riley will officiate with burial following in McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 prior to the service at the funeral home.

Kevin David Wheeler
Kevin David Wheeler, 32, of Nebo, died Saturday, May 1, 2004 at his residence.
Born Dec. 23, 1971 in McDowell County, he is survived by his father, David Lee Wheeler, and wife, Ann Wheeler, of Nebo and mother, Edna Moses Britt, and husband, Bruce Britt, of Nebo.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wheeler is also survived by his son, Cody Penland of Old Fort; a sister, Denise Brinkley of Nebo; a niece, Shelby Brinkley; and two nephews, Seth and Isaiah Wheeler; many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins also survive him.
