DOROTHY KIRKMAN JOHNSON

Dorothy Kirkman Johnson, 83, of 3291 Lizzie Mill Road, Selma, N. C. died Saturday, December 27, 2003 at her home.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 29, 2003 at Goldston Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Roy Helms.

Mrs. Johnson was a native of Chatham County and was a member of St. John's Baptist Church and the Children's Nursery, Raleigh, N. C. She was a graduate of Watt's Nursing School, a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur L. Johnson.

Survivors include son, Carl L. Johnson and wife, Carol of Selma; grandchildren, A. J. Lightsey and Jake Lightsey of Selma; sister, Ruth Smith of Siler City; and a nephew, Wade Kirkman of Goldston.

Memorials may be made to Goldston Cemetery Fund, c/o John Harris, P. O. Box 35, Goldston, N. C. 27252.

MARGARET CASEY ARRINGTON

Margaret C. Arrington, 78, of Ypsilanti Twp, Michigan, former resident of Siler City died Thursday, December 25, 2003 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Michigan.

She was born on February 20, 1925 in High Point, N. C., the daughter of Robert and Minnie Casey. On December 24, 1948 she married Fred Arrington in Greensboro, N. C. She was a member of Loves Creek Baptist Church in Siler City. She also enjoyed playing the piano.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Arrington of the home; son, Phillip Arrington, who is a professor at Eastern Michigan University; two grandchildren, Kasey and Dylan Arrington.

A memorial service was held Saturday, December 27 at East Clark Towers in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Memorials in Mrs. Arrington's name may be made to Loves Creek Baptist Church, 14680 US 64W, Siler City, N. C. 27344.

There will be a memorial service held for friends and family in Siler City later this summer.

HELEN B. HARRIS

Helen Bumgarner Harris, 76, 6706 Clipwood Road, Bennett died Monday (12-22-2003) at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (12-24-2003) at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with Rev. Thurman Williams officiating. Entombment followed at Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Caldwell County, a homemaker, and a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Harris of the home; sons, Bruce Harris of Robbins and Ronnie Harris of Bennett; daughters, Brenda King of Asheboro, Reita Brown of Bennett, Rose Dunn of Ramseur, and Peggy Howard of Robbins; sister, Mattie Lou Goble of Granite Falls; eight grandchildren; and nine, great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to: Pleasant Grove Christian Church, 5946 Pleasant Grove Church Rd., Bennett, N.C. 27208; or to: Bennett Fire Department, 55 East Raleigh St., P.O. Box 283, Bennett, N.C. 27208.

MISS MARY ANN COUNCIL

Miss Mary Ann Council, 94, died Sunday (12-28-2003) at The Laurels of Chatham, Pittsboro.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday (12-30-2003) at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church with Rev. John Singletary and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Miss Council was born in Chatham County. She retired from J. M. Odell Mfg. Co., where she worked as a spinner. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church where she was the oldest living member until her death.

Surviving is her sister, Martha Thrift of Pittsboro.

Memorials may be made to the Cemetery Fund of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Pittsboro.

MRS. ANNIE MAE JOHNSON HEADEN

Mrs. Annie Mae Johnson Headen, 70, of 412 West Third Street, Siler City died Saturday, (12-27-2003) at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday (12-31-2003) at Price Community Church of God of Prophecy, Siler City.

Survivors include children; Treva McLean of Sanford, Harriet Harris, Sherlyn White, Patsy Headen, Pamela Headen all of Siler City, Angela Headen and Ricky Headen of Charlotte. Gregory Headen of Sulfolk, Va., and Terry Headen of Sanford: half sisters, Rev. Ceola Martin and Florence Allen of Siler City, Nalatha Brower of Washington D. C.; eighteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

WILLIAM “BILL” JAMES CLARK

William “Bill” James Clark, 91, died Monday (12-22-2003) at Pittsboro Christian Village in Pittsboro.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday (12-26-2003) in Pittsboro Christian Village Chapel. Burial followed in Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City.

Mr. Clark was a native of McKeesport, Pa., and retired from the Chrysler Corporation.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Page; three grandchildren; sister, Mary Moore and a brother, Harold Clark.

Memorials may be made to The Pittsboro Christian Village Benevolent Fund.

MELVIN L. BROWN

Mr. Melvin Lee Brown, 50, of Asheboro died Saturday, (12-25-04) in Siler City.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday (12-29-04) at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Asheboro with burial following in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, also in Asheboro.

Mr. Brown was a native of Randolph County, a graduate of Eastern Randolph High School, High Point University, and an employee at Unilever Bestfoods of North America. He attended Cox’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Brown; daughter, Patrice Brown; son, Brian Brown, all of the home; mother, Celia Brown of Siler City; sisters, Pricilla Devane of Greensboro, Patricia Patterson of Liberty; and brother, David Brown of Greensboro.

MAXINE BRADY VONCANNON

Maxine Brady Voncannon, 73, of Bennett died Sunday (12-26-04) at her home.

Funeral services were held at 2 pm on Tuesday (12-28-04) at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, with Rev. Andy Scott officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Voncannon was a native of Chatham County, a cloth inspector at Collins-Aikman in Siler City and a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include son, Frankie Hall of Seagrove; daughter, Debbie Jenkins of Randleman; sister, Ometa Page of Bear Creek; brothers, Ralph Brady and Howard Brady, both of Bennett; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to Mt. Zion UMC, c/o Linda Brown, 6812 Joe Branson Road, Bennett, NC 27208.

MRS. DALTON TRIPP POSCHEN FOLEY

Mrs. Dalton Tripp Poschen Foley, 86, of Mann’s Chapel Road, Pittsboro, died Friday, (12-24-04) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

A private service for committal of the cremated remains will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Foley was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and a member of Mann’s Chapel Church.

Survivors include daughters, Barbara Poschen Shean of Chapel Hill, Shirley Poschen Sieber of Pittsboro; sister, Mary Tripp Teasley of Pittsboro; one grandson and one great-grandson.

JAMES DAVID (J.D.) FIKES

James David (J.D.) Fikes, 75 of Siler City died August 30, 2004, in Siler City.

Funeral services were held at 2 pm Thursday, (12-23-04) at Corinth AME Zion Church with Rev. Corey Little officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Fikes was a native of Chatham County, a retired mechanic and a member of Corinth AME Zion Church.

Survivors include sons, Henrey Fikes of Liberty, Rondo Fikes, Kenneth Brower, and James McSwain, all of Siler City; daughter, Rayetta Fox of Siler City; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

JAMES “JIMMY” VANCE WILLIAMS, III

James “Jimmy” Vance Williams, III, 30 of Sanford died Friday (12-24-04) at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday (12-29-04) at the Moncure United Methodist Church with Rev. Houston Blair officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Williams was a member of the Moncure United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, A.J. Blalock of Sanford; father and step-mother, James V. Williams, Jr. and Phyllis Williams of Moncure; mother, Lisa Palmer Willis of Chapel Hill; step-father, Fernnie Paul Willis of Beattie; brother, Anthony Phillips of Gulf; sisters, Jessica Holder of Sanford, Dana George of Buffalo, Amy Phillips of Ramseur; maternal grandmother, Nellie L. Palmer of Moncure; paternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Katie and Carthell Garner of Siler City.

VIRGINIA HANCOCK PHILLIPS

Virginia Hancock Phillips, 91, of Bear Creek died Monday, (12-27-04) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

Funeral services are being held at 2 p.m. Thursday (12-30-04) at Glendon Christian Church in Glendon with Pastor Jack Phillips, Rev. Bob Yandle and Rev. Joe Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Phillips was a native of Chatham County, a homemaker and member of Glendon Christian Church.

Survivors include sons, Pastor Jack Phillips of Candor, Jerry Phillips of the home; daughter, Gloria “Betsy” Brooks of Bear Creek; five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Visitation was scheduled for Wednesday (12-29-04) at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City from 6:30 p.m. to 9. At other times, the family will be at the family home.

Memorials may be made to Glendon Christian Church, 148 Glendon Church Road, Glendon, NC 27325.

MR. EDDIE JR. NETTLES

Mr. Eddie Jr. Nettles, 39, of Siler City died Saturday, (12-25-04) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, (12-30-04) at Holy Trinity United Holy Church with Elder Samuel B. Obie officiating. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Park.

Mr. Nettles was educated at Pittsboro Primary, Horton Middle and Northwood High School.

Survivors include his wife, Della Mae Nettles of the home; daughters, Jessica and Edwina Nettles; sons, Eddie Jr. and Joshua Nettles; sisters, Jacqueline Miller of Spring Lake, Manda Williams of Fuquay; brothers, Theodore, Alexander, Charles DeThabon, all of Siler City, Yoncee Nettles of Raleigh, Timothy Nettles of Clayton.

Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, (12-30-04) from 1 – 2 pm at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home at 1101 Twelfth Street.
