Horace David Almond
PINNACLE — Horace David Almond, 84, 120 Joseph Ayers Road, died Sunday (Sept. 5, 1999) at his home.
Born Feb. 18, 1915, in Stanly County, Mr. Almond was a son of the late James Allen and Cassandra Lowder Almond. A member of Canton Baptist Church, he had retired as a supervisor in the textile manufacturing business. He was a member of Shoals Ruritan. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served from 1943-1944 aboard the USS Wisconsin.
Survivors include wife Helen Ruth Hauser Almond; son Giles Kevin Almond, Charlotte; daughter Judith Ann Graybeal, Cary; brothers Ralph Almond, Albemarle, and Hubert Almond, New London; and four grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Stanly Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Tully Blanchard. Burial, Canton Baptist Church cemetery.

Amylea May
KANNAPOLIS — Amylea Eddleman May, 72, 501 Eddleman Road, died Monday (Sept. 6, 1999) at The Best of Care nursing home after 18 months of declining health.
Born Oct. 16, 1926, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. May was a daughter of the late William Franklin and Grace Furr Eddleman. A member of Center Grove Lutheran Church, she had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, sewing room.
Survivors include husband John Frank May; daughters Mrs. Mike (Christy May) Whitley, Norwood, and Penny May Love, China Grove; son Johnny May, Kannapolis; brother J. Frank Eddleman, Kannapolis; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Center Grove Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Zachariah Harris and the Rev. Lonnie Karriker. Burial, church cemetery.

Estaline King Coan
CONCORD — Estaline King Coan, 94, 512 Fisher St., died Monday (Sept. 6, 1999) at her home after 10 months of declining health.
Born Sept. 14, 1904, in Union County, Mrs. Coan was a daughter of the late Samuel Rufus and Missouri McManus King. She had retired in 1970 from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, sewing room.
She was a member of Brookdale Baptist Church, Kannapolis, where she had formerly taught Bible school. She was also a member of the Cabarrus Christian Women’s Club.
Her husband, T. Guy Coan, died Feb. 22, 1984.
Survivors include sons Paul Coan, China Grove, and James Coan, Grove City, Ohio; daughters Ruth Lash and Rachel Hollemon, both of Concord, Pat Overcash, China Grove, Sarah Roberts, Landis, and Carole Oliver, Kannapolis; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m Wednesday, Brookdale Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Ken Savage. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Lena West
Lena West, 89, Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury, died Sunday (Sept. 5, 1999) at the nursing center.
Born Dec. 6, 1909, in Weems, Va., Mrs. West was a daughter of the late Edward and Nanna Abbott. A homemaker, she was a Catholic.
Survivors include daughters Gladys Nosalik, Salisbury, and Jean Cassada, Archdale; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

The infant was born July 25, 1999, in Cabarrus County. She was a member of Victory Temple, Concord.

Ray Summerell Lipe
CHINA GROVE — Ray Summerell Lipe, 84, 540 Brown Road, died Monday (Sept. 6, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after five years of declining health and a month of serious illness.
Born Sept. 6, 1915, in Rowan County, Mr. Lipe was a son of the late Gip Leroy and Nannie Frances Long Lipe. A graduate of Farm Life School, China Grove, and Queens College, Charlotte, he had retired after 35 years with the Stanback Co.
He was a member of Mount Moriah Lutheran Church, where he served as organist for 30 years. He was nd a former member of the church council and the worship and music committee.
Survivors include wife Nellie Beaver Lipe, whom he married Jan. 31, 1941; daughter Mrs. Jimmy (Kathy) Beck, China Grove; brother Walter “Jack” Lipe, China Grove; sisters Lillian L. Corriher and Kathleen L. Clayton, both of China Grove; and three grandsons.

June Hankins
June Lane Goforth Hankins, 57, Las Cruces, N.M., formerly of Statesville and Salisbury, died Tuesday (Sept. 7, 1999) at Hospice Hospital in Las Cruces after a six-year battle with cancer.
Born June 24, 1942, in Iredell County, Ms. Hankins was a daughter of J. Frank and Doris Readling Goforth of Statesville. A graduate of Statesville High School, she attended Florida State University and graduated cum laude from Appalachian State University. A member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, she was secretary to the dean of the graduate school at New Mexico State University.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include daughter Grayson Hankins, Las Cruces, N.M.; and brother Steve Goforth, Statesville.
Services: Memorial, 7 p.m. friday, Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel, Statesville, conducted by Dr. Abe Cox. Burial will be held at a later date.

Walter Aaron Hopkins Jr., 55, San Jose, Calif., formerly of Rowan County, died Tuesday (Sept. 7, 1999) at El Camino Hospital, Mount View, Calif.

Edna Mancuso
CONCORD — The funeral will be Friday for Edna Anderson Clodfelter Mancuso, 80, First Assembly Living Center, who died Tuesday (Sept. 7, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center after several years of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.
Born April 6, 1919, in Alexander County, Mrs. Mancuso was a daughter of the late Sanford G. and Bessie Wellmon Anderson. She formerly worked for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore and as a credit analyst for various retail stores in Richmond, Va., Chattanooga, Tenn., and Charlotte. She was a member of Green Memorial Baptist Church, Charlotte.
Survivors include daughter Mrs. Don L. (Patricia C.) Hogue, Kannapolis; brothers Bill Anderson, Orting, Wash., Troy Anderson, Pineville, and Newell Anderson, China Grove; sister Gladys Milkulski, Baltimore; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

Cecil Koontz McDaniel
MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Thursday for Cecil Koontz McDaniel, 88, Godbey Road, who died Tuesday (Sept. 7, 1999) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.
Born Dec. 11, 1910, in Davie County, Mr. McDaniel was a son of the late James Sanford and Lela Alice Koontz McDaniel. A farmer, he had also worked for Edwards Furniture. He was a member of Center United Methodist Church.
Known as the “Apple Man” for selling apples and other produce, he received a number of blue ribbons at the Center Fair.
His wife, Beatrice Davis McDaniel, and sons J.C. and Cecil Herman McDaniel preceded him in death.
Survivors include son Grady McDaniel; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. today, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mitchael McDaniel, the Rev. Johnny Abee and the Rev. Ray Thomas. Burial, Center United Methodist Church cemetery.

Kevin J. McMichael
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Kevin Joseph McMichael, 27, of Dunes Cove, died Sunday (Sept. 5, 1999) at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. His mother, Janet Piatt McMichael, a former Salisbury, N.C., resident, now lives in Myrtle Beach.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at McMillan-Small Funeral Home. Entombment was at the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum at Southeastern Memorial Gardens.
