KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Carrie Poteat Fleming, 82, of 110 Crescent Street, Kannapolis, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at her residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Chaplain Rick Durham of Hospice of Cabarrus County will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Born May 17, 1922, in Mt. Ulla, she was a daughter of the late Guy Alonzo Poteat and Mary Weddington Poteat. She was retired from Hoechst Celanese Corporation in Salisbury and was a former teacher's aide. She also traveled extensively in the United States as a photographer with Jones and Presnell Studios. She was a member of Jackson Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Tony Taylor Fleming of China Grove; three grandchildren, Gaye Louvee Wood of Mt. Pleasant, Craig James Fleming of China Grove and David Randall Fleming of Salisbury; and three great-grandchildren.
Calvin John Zimmer, Jr.

CONCORD, NC - Mr. Calvin John Zimmer, Jr., 35, of 63 Brumley Avenue, Concord, the Ashbury Group Home, died Sunday, March 20, 2005.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis. The Rev. Dennis Kyseth will officiate
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Born April 29, 1969, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, he was the son of Shirley Weibel of St. Charles, Minnesota and the late Calvin John Zimmer, Sr. He was employed with Rowan Vocational Opportunities, Inc.
Survivors in addition to his mother include three sisters, Dawn Marie Sundblade of Indian Trail, Eva Mary Ebner of Sabetha, Kansas and Rosemary Anne Lambert of China Grove; his maternal grandmother, Marie Weibel of Cashton, Wisconsin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mildred Scott Goodman

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Helen Mildred Scott Goodman, 86, a resident of Avante of Concord and formerly of Mountain Street in Kannapolis, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at the nursing center, following seven years of declining heath and a serious illness of three months.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Sam Crisp will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Friday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at their respective homes.
Born September 28, 1918 in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late M. T. Scott and Beulah Rowell Scott. She was retired from the sewing room of Cannon Mills, Plant One in Kannapolis.
Her husband, Thomas Lee Goodman, preceded her in death.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Luther Adolphus Brigman

CONCORD, NC - Mr. Luther Adolphus Brigman, 86, of 220 Bishop Lane, Apt. 208, Concord, and formerly of Debbie Street in Kannapolis, died Friday, March 11, 2005, at the Brian Center in Concord.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2005, at Parkwood Baptist Church. The Rev. Darrell Coble and the Rev. Bo Sherrill will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The body will remain at Lady's Funeral Home until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born August 19, 1918, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Dolphus Butler Brigman and Annie Belle Overcash Brigman. He retired in 1983 from the No. 7 Weave Room at Cannon Mills Plant One, following 46 years of service. He was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church and the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf. He was a former member of the Deaf Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Marie Huffman Brigman; and several nieces and nephews, Gale Brigman and his wife Pat of Kannapolis, Coy Dean Brigman and his wife Dee of Havelock, Jerry Brigman and his wife Mary Etta of Mooresville, Betty Coggins and her husband Norman of Salisbury, Dean Icard and her husband Jimmy of Kannapolis, Maryann Nance and her husband Mason of Monroe, Bobby Brigman of Kannapolis, Gilbert Brigman, Jr. and his wife Doris of Mt. Pleasant, Ray Sides and his wife Helen of Norfolk, Va., Pam Correll and her husband Arnold of Tennessee, and Roy Sides and his wife Irene of Lincolnton.

Othelia Barnhardt Connell

LANDIS, NC - Mrs. Othelia Barnhardt Connell, 83, of 701-11 S. Deal Street, Landis, died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 10, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel in Kannapolis. The Rev. Leon Hawks will officiate. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in China Grove.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Born March 10, 1921, in Mocksville, NC, she was a daughter of the late George Daniel Barnhardt and Lutia Mallory Barnhardt. She was retired from the spinning room of Cannon Mills.
Her husband, Harold Connell, preceded her in death on July 29, 1999.
Survivors include a son, James Braxton Connell of Landis; two grandchildren, Chasity Parker of Concord and Braxton Connell of Landis; and a great-grandchild, Payton Parker of China Grove.
Rachel Hawsley Buckwell

CONCORD, NC - Mrs. Rachel Hawsley Presson Buckwell, 93, of Cline School Road, Concord, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at NorthEast Medical Center, after being in declining health for three months.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2005, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joseph A. Miller will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dr. Daron "Chip" Buckwell, Jr., Randal B. Buckwell, Kenneth W. Buckwell, Douglas A. Buckwell, Roy A. Gray, and Clyde "Rusty" Drye, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis.
Born May 25, 1911, in Orlando, Florida, she was a daughter of the late Vernon A. Presson and Mary Ann Laney Presson. She retired August 25, 1982 from the Wrapping Department at Cannon Mills, Plant One in Kannapolis, after 52 years of service. She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and the WELCA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Moroney Buckwell; a daughter, Betty Ann Buckwell Bost; and six brothers and sisters.
Survivors include three sons, Ronald "Buck" Buckwell of the home, Daron G. Buckwell and his wife, Ruby, of Concord, and Jimmy Ray Buckwell and his wife, Cynthia, of Mount Pleasant; grandchildren, Dr. Daron "Chip" Buckwell, Jr., Randal B. Buckwell, Tamara Bost Gray, Kenneth W. Buckwell and Douglas A. Buckwell; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Buckwell, Tyler Buckwell, Ashleigh Gray, Hunter Buckwell and McKenna Buckwell; and a sister-in-law, Margie Spry of Taylorsville.

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Eric Shumake, 43, of Kannapolis, died Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center.
Funeral services are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Dwayne Mann will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9:00 p.m. Monday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Mrs. Charlene Winecoff, 410 East 25th Street, Kannapolis.
Mr. Shumake was born December 16, 1961 in Cabarrus County. He was a son of Margaret Haskins Shumake of Kannapolis and the late Bobby Carroll Shumake. He formerly was employed by Fieldcrest Cannon in Kannapolis.
Mr. Shumake, in addition to his father, was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Carroll Shumake.
Mr. Shumake, in addition to his mother, is survived by a daughter, Christine Shumake of Kannapolis; two sons, Michael Shumake and Jeffery Shumake, both of Kannapolis; and a brother, Shane L. Shumake of Cleveland, NC.
Esther Deese Cox

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Esther Deese Cox, 93, a resident of Best of Care and formerly of Brantley Road, Kannapolis, died Monday, February 14, 2005, at NorthEast Medical Center, following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jim Yow and the Rev. Sarah Weaver will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of a daughter, Sandra Chapman, 1851 Wetherburn Drive, Kannapolis.
Born June 3, 1911, in Moore County, she was a daughter of the late George and Annie Reynolds, and the last of a family of 15 children . She retired after 40 years of service from the washcloth department of Cannon Mills, Pant One. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Exodus Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two daughters, Pat James of Kannapolis and Sandra Chapman and her husband, Charles, of Kannapolis; five grandchildren, Amelia Goodnight and her husband Doug, Alan Chapman, Brian Chapman and his wife Allison, Carla Fulton and her husband Brad, and David Chapman and his wife Cheryl; and three great-grandchildren, Will Chapman, and James and McKinley Goodnight.

A graveside service with interment to follow will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 12, 2005, at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Trent Patterson will officiate.

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Jewell Maxine Brown Woodard, 72, a resident of Universal Healthcare in Concord and formerly of Russell Street in Kannapolis, died Sunday, January 30, 2005, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Willie Rash will officiate. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of her granddaughter, Michele Stamey, 809 Ashwood Street, Kannapolis.
Born December 8, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Emory Brown and Anna Cheney Brown. She retired several years ago from Johnson Motor Lines in Charlotte. She previously worked for Clark's and W. T. Grant.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. B. Woodard, who died October 28, 2002.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Roberts and her husband, Dale, of Concord; a son, James "Jim" Woodard of Concord; a sister, Jean Brown of Taylorsville; two brothers, Joe Brown of Atlanta, Georgia and James Brown of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Michele Stamey and her husband, Brian Stamey II, and Chris Voyles and his wife, Kelly, all of Kannapolis, Justin Woodard and Matthew Woodard, both of Goose Creek, SC; and five great-grandchildren, Tiffany Cobler, Katherine Stamey, Madeline Stamey, Joshua Stamey and Kassidy Voyles.
