James Lisk

CHINA GROVE — James Shelba Lisk, 76, of 1425 N. Main St., died Friday (Sept. 3, 1999) at Laurels of Salisbury.

He was born April 14, 1923, in Montgomery County to the late Victoria Freeman and James Melton Lisk.

He received his education in the Haywood County Schools. He served in the U.S. Army and retired after 41 years with Southern Railway. He attended Mount Zion United Church of Christ.

His wife, Virginia Kincaid Lisk, preceded him in death in 1993.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Maness Harrington, of Newport News, Va., and Joan Maness Cartner, of Concord, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Northcrest Chapel at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home. The Rev. William Campbell will officiate. Entombment, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. , Monday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Memorials: Mount Zion United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 1298, China Grove, N.C., 28023.

Sallie Riddle

MOCKSVILLE — Sallie Bowles Riddle, 86, of Chal Smith Road, died Saturday (Sept. 4, 1999), at Autumn Care of Mocksville after declining health.

Born Oct. 10, 1912, in Davie County, her parents Lela Howell and Walter Henry Bowles preceded her in death.

She retired form AT&T with more than 20 years of service. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and Yadkin Valley Baptist Church.

Her husband, Robert H. Riddle, and son, Robert Gerald Riddle, grandson, Hubert Mason, and brother, Lendon Bowles, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include: one son, Ronnie Riddle, of Mocksville; three daughters, Nancy Mason, Frances Nifong and Patsy Staley, all of Mocksville; two brothers, Charlie Bowles, of Mocksville, and Wilson Bowles, of Yadkinville; two sisters, Mozelle B. Milton, of Yadkinville, and Camilla B. Elam, of Winston-Salem; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 13 step great-grandchildren; and four step great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. , Monday, Yadkin Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Craddock and the Rev. Glenn Sellers officiating. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. , today, Eaton Funeral Home.

Memorials: Yadkin Valley Baptist Church, 1324 Yadkin Valey Church Road, Advance, N.C., 27006.

Robert Stewart

MOORESVILLE — Robert “Bob” Wayne Stewart, 55, of Cedarview Lane, died Saturday (Sept. 4, 1999) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

He born Dec. 20, 1943, in Iredell County to Vassie Mae Sigmon and Ross Stewart, who preceded him in death.

He drove a truck for MacLeod Construction Co., in Denver, N.C., and was a member of Fern Hill Baptist Church in Troutman.

Survivors include: his wife Loyce Cook Stewart whom he married on April 21, 1973; two sons, Eddie Wayne Stewart, of Lenoir, and Michael Ross Stewart, of Mooresville; three daughters, Vickie S. Byrd, of Statesville, Cathy C. Smith and her husband Baron, both of Statesville, and Carolyn C. Gartin, of Mooresville; one brother, Clinton Stewart, of Mooresville; three sisters, Helen S. Johnson, of South Daytona Beach, Fla., Elsie Wallace, of Troutman, and Judy Milam, of Troutman; and 10 grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Cavin Funeral Home chapel. Burial to follow at Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.

Visitation: 7-8: 30 p.m. , Monday, Cavin Funeral Home, Mooresville.

Memorials: Trinity Baptist Church, 2722 Hwy. 601, S. Mocksville, N.C. 27028.

Harry Milas Dayvault

RALEIGH — Harry Milas Dayvault, 78, formerly of Kannapolis, died Sunday (Sept. 5, 1999) in Raleigh.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Hayes-Barton United Methodist Church. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home is in charge.

Visitation: The family will receive friends following the service.

Dennis Wayne Hodge

LEXINGTON — Dennis Wayne Hodge, 47, of Gray Road, died Saturday (Sept. 4, 1999) at Davie County Hospital after a sudden illness.

Born Dec. 20, 1951, in Catawba County, Mr. Hodge was the son of Paul G. Hodge, of Lexington, and the late Novella Drum Hodge. He was employed with Carolina Perlite in Gold Hill and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietname War.

In addition to his father, survivors include his wife, Pam Shoaf Hodge; a son, Jarrod Hodge, Lexington; three brothers, Vernon Hodge, Maiden, Gary Hodge, Charleston, S.C., and Ricky Hodge, Winston-Salem.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Roberts. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6: 30-8: 30 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Bobby and Geraldine Shoaf, 6149 N. C. 8 South, Lexington.

Glenn Mitchell Riddle

Glenn Mitchell Riddle, 52, of Salisbury, died Friday (Sept. 3, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born June 6, 1947, in Salisbury, Mr. Riddle was the son of the late Onnie Coble and Edward Charles Riddle. Educated in the Granite Quarry and East Rowan County Schools, he received a criminal justice degree from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

Mr. Riddle was a federal police officer at the VA Medical Center for 15 years before retiring in May 1998. A disabled veteran, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Army and received the Bronze Star.

Survivors include his wife, Melody Mann Riddle, whom he married Dec. 27, 1972; a daughter, Connie LuAnn Riddle, of the home; two brothers, Eddie Riddle, Faith, and Danny Riddle, Salisbury; and a sister, Judy R. Koontz, Lexington.

Services: Memorial service, 10 a.m. Tuesday, Summersett Memorial Chapel. The body will be cremated. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan Veteran Council.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Ricardo Lee Doby

MISENHEIMER — Ricardo Lee Doby, 39, of Graystone, 48487 U.S. 52 N, died Sunday (Sept. 5, 1999) at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Born Dec. 12, 1959, in Stanly County, Mr. Doby was the son of Lavada Galloway Doby, of Misenheimer, and the late Lonnie Lee Doby. He was a heavy equipment operator, last employed by BRS of Richfield, and attended First Baptist Church of Gold Hill.

Beside his mother, survivors include a brother, David Neil Doby, Albemarle, and his maternal grandmother, Mazalee Galloway, Gold Hill.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, Albemarle. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home.

Memorials: Hospice of Stanly County, 960 N. First St., Albemarle, N.C. 28001 or First Baptist Church of Gold Hill, P.O. Box 288, Gold Hill, N.C. 28071.

Caleb George Lefler

ALBEMARLE — Caleb George Lefler, 73, of 703 Palmer St., died Sunday (Sept. 5, 1999) at his home.

Born July 19, 1926, in Stanly County, Mr. Lefler was the son of the late W. Newman and Lola Walter Lefler. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a retired carpet installer, last employed by C&L Carpets. Mr. Lefler was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church of Albemarle.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Lorene Lefler; a daughter, Tanya Hancock, Monroe; two brothers, Walter N. Lefler, Spartanburg, S.C., and Charles B. Lefler, Oak Island; three sisters, Jean Noble, Laurens, S.C., Betty Davis, Tryon, and Joanna Carpenter, Columbia, S.C.; one grandson; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, First Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John Futterer. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, with military graveside rites conducted by the Stanly County DAV.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Memorials: First Lutheran Church, 230 S. Second St., Albemarle, N.C. 28001 or Hospice of Stanly County, 960 N. First St., Albemarle, N.C. 28001.

C. Wayne Cummings

LILLINGTON — C. Wayne Cummings, 80, a native of Harnett County, died Sunday (Sept. 5, 1999) at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Isadell F. Cummings; a daughter, Sue C. Collins, Salisbury; three sons, Jerry, Kenneth and Chris Cummings, all of Lillington; four brothers, Worth, Williard, Winfred and Jake Cummings, all of Lillington; a sister, Jeanette Thynes, of South Carolina; three step-daughters, Janice Smith, Phyllis Suggs and Diane Smith, all of Tabor City; a step-son, Billy Fowler, Tabor City; and six grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Raven Rock Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Vuncannon, the Rev. Jerry Parsons, and the Rev. Kenneth Smith. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home.

Hubert Monroe Leazer

The funeral will be Wednesday for Hubert Monroe Leazer, 86, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Sept. 5, 1999) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury after eight months of declining health.

Born Dec. 7, 1912, in Rowan County, Mr. Leazer was a son of the late Albert and Florence Basinger Leazer. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 7, in Salisbury.

A charter member of Messiah Lutheran Church, he was vice president of the first church council and treasurer of the first Sunday school. He served on the finance committee for building the present church. An usher and council member numerous times, he was a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood. He was former assistant Scoutmaster of Cannon Mills Troop 454.

His wife, Pauline Ruth Miller Leazer, died June 7, 1985.

Survivors include sons Donald “Don” Leazer, Monroe, Bill Leazer, Salisbury, and Gary Leazer, Faith; brothers Roy Leazer, Salisbury, and Raymond Leazer, Chattanooga, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Messiah Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry L. Hollar. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8: 30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Memorials: Messiah Lutheran Church, 701 E. Lafayette St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

Ruth McKnight Hanks

LINWOOD — Ruth McKnight Hanks, 88, 3572 Swicegood Road, died Monday (Sept. 6, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born July 6, 1911, in Allegheny County, Mrs. Hanks was a daughter of the late Columbus Spotswood and Ella Woodruff McKnight. A homemaker, she attended Oakdale Baptist Church, Spencer.

Survivors include son Harold Hanks, Statesville; daughter Margaret Hanks Wilson, Linwood; brother F.A. McKnight, Glade Valley; sister Mrs. H.G. (Recie) Royall, Statesville; one granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Westmoreland Chapel, Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, Statesville, conducted by the Rev. Robert Heard, pastor, Oakdale Baptist Church, Spencer. Burial, Iredell Memorial Gardens, Statesville.

Visitation: 7-8: 30 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.
