KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Barbara Ann Payne Wilson, 67, of 217 S. Rose Avenue, Kannapolis, died Thursday, August 5, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004, at Calvary Baptist Church. Dr. Dale Tanner, the Rev. Curtis Parker and the Rev. Ralph Robinette will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born September 26, 1936 in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late Fred Gilbert Payne and Annie Belle Christy Payne. She retired from the sewing room of Pillowtex Plant One in Kannapolis. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Her husband, Earnest Leroy Wilson, preceded her in death on April 1, 2001.
Survivors include three daughters, Glenda Williams, Catherine Cline and Janet Absher, all of Kannapolis; two sons, Bobby Wilson of Salisbury and Eddie Wilson of China Grove; one sister, Nancy Payne West of Grafton, WI; one brother, Troy Payne of Huntington Beach, California; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to Calvary Baptist Church, 703 Buick Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28083.

Annie Wilhelm Stewart

BIRTH DATE: September 5, 1909
DEATH DATE: May 28, 2005

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Annie Wilhelm Stewart, 95, formerly of Airport Road, Kannapolis, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at Genesis Eldercare in Salisbury. She had been in declining health for a number of years and was seriously ill for four weeks.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Joel Fowler will officiate. Interment will follow at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Landis.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of her son, Clarence Stewart, Jr., 410 Airport Road, Kannapolis.
Born September 5, 1909, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Robert M. Wilhelm and Ida Blackwelder Wilhelm. She was retired from Bon Marce Dress Shop.
Her husband, Clarence Stewart, Sr., preceded her in death on January 4, 1961.
Survivors include a son, Clarence Stewart, Jr. of Kannapolis; a granddaughter, Carmen Strickland; two great-grandchildren, Kristen Mann and Brandon Strickland.

James Milton Van Buskirk

BIRTH DATE: November 24, 1943
DEATH DATE: May 26, 2005

CONCORD, NC - Mr. James Milton “Jim” Van Buskirk, 61, formerly of Matthews, NC, died Thursday, May 26, 2005, at his home at 603 Woodbrook Place, Concord, NC.
Funeral services are scheduled for 12 Noon Tuesday, May 31, 2005 in Lady's Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis. Rev. Debbie Sebring will officiate. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the V.A. National Cemetery in Salisbury. Military graveside rites will be provided by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The family will receive friends from 11 to 12:00 Noon Tuesday at Lady’s Funeral Home.
Mr. Van Buskirk was born November 24, 1943 in Akron, OH. He was a son of the late Lyman Milton Van Buskirk and Rebecca Jane Smith Van Buskirk. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and was employed with Acosta Sales and Marketing in Charlotte, NC.
Mr. Van Buskirk is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" West Van Buskirk; son, Robert Van Buskirk, and his wife, Lorrie, of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Barbara Braun of Middlesex, NC and Linda Niles of Oxford, NC; two grandchildren, Rebecca Van Buskirk and Lindsey Van Buskirk.
The family requests that memorials for Mr. Van Buskirk be made to your local Hospice unit or to the American Cancer Society.

Edward T. Houston

BIRTH DATE: May 12, 1916
DEATH DATE: May 22, 2005

CHINA GROVE, NC - The Rev. Edward T. Houston, 89, of 330 State Road, China Grove, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at First Wesleyan Church in Kannapolis. The Rev. Steve Beam, the Rev. Trent Patterson, Dr. Forbis Kivett and the Rev. Wayne Preusz will officiate. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
The body will remain at Lady's Funeral Home until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis. At other times, they will be at the residence.
Born May 12, 1916, in Southport, he was the son of the late Cornelia Blackburn Carr. He was a graduate of Allentown Bible Institute in Allentown, PA. He was a Wesleyan minister and formerly pastored Pilgrim Holiness Church in Woodbury, NJ, Pilgrim Holiness Church in Stroudsburg, PA, North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church in Kannapolis, First Wesleyan Church in Burlington, and retired in 1983 from Mebane Wesleyan Church in Mebane. Following his retirement, he moved to this area and was a member of North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church. He also served as president of Camp Wesley from 1992 to 1997.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Hughes Houston, on March 10, 2003; and a daughter, Lisa Anne Houston.
Survivors include a daughter, Merle K. Meckes and her husband, Roland P. Meckes of China Grove; four grandchildren, Dee Efird of China Grove, Beth Carlton of Mooresville, Paul Meckes, Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC and Edward "Chip" Meckes of China Grove; and four great-grandchildren, Brent Efird, Laura Anne Carlton, Katie Carlton and Wesley Meckes.
Memorials may be sent to North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church, 314 West 12th Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
The family expresses thanks to the staff of Liberty Commons in Salisbury for their love and care the past year.

Aileen Pruitt Carlton

BIRTH DATE: May 6, 1932
DEATH DATE: May 18, 2005

CHINA GROVE, NC - Mrs. Aileen Pruitt Carlton, 73, of 445 Carlton Ridge Lane, China Grove, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2005, at Charity Baptist Church. The Revs. R. J. Hammond, Jimmy Barrett and Gene Beaver will officiate. Entombment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel.
The body will remain at Lady's Funeral Home until taken to the church two hours prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born May 6, 1932, in Richmond, VA, she was a daughter of the late William D. Pruitt and Mamie White Pruitt. She had lived in this area for 32 years and was a member of Charity Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and a beautician and formerly owned and operated Derma, Inc. in Charlotte. She was a faithful Christian, devoted wife, and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Pruitt, Rudolph Pruitt and Douglas Pruitt.
Survivors include her husband, Norman C. Carlton; three daughters, Barbara A. Gautney of Liberty, Rhonda C. Anderson of Concord and Brenda K. Carlton of Lexington; five sons, Earl F. Anderson, Jr. and Steven F. Carlton, both of Kannapolis, Thomas W. Anderson of Concord, David C. Carlton of Cassatt, SC and Marvin J. Carlton of China Grove; a sister, Susan P. Lett of Richmond, VA; a brother, William Pruitt, Jr. of St. Petersburg, FL; 22 grandchildren, Earl Anderson III, Anthony Anderson, Roxie Parr, Nikki Parr, Cameron Gulledge, Shelly Butler, Ronald Gautney, Jr., Norma Jean Little, Thomas Anderson II, Jeremiah Carlton, Jennifer Carlton, Joshua Carlton, Jacqueline Carlton, Brandon Collins, Laurie Cook, Amanda Carlton, Georgia Carlton, Shannon Hinson, Jason Hinson, Shannon Hicks, Michael Hicks and Steven McInnis; six great-grandchildren, Andrea Butler, Chassity Butler, Jacob Anderson, Caitlin Anderson, Chloe Cook and Brooke Hinson; four sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law; and 19 nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 6000 Fairview Road, Suite 200, Charlotte, NC 28210.

Edward Junior McQueen

BIRTH DATE: April 30, 1932
DEATH DATE: May 18, 2005

CONCORD, NC - Mr. Edward Junior McQueen, 73, of 3131 Old Salisbury Concord Road, Concord, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, in Shalotte, NC.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tim McQueen and the Rev. Steven Cline will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of his daughter, Roxann Linker, 5930 Turkey Road, Kannapolis.
Born April 30, 1932, in Cabarrus County, he was the son of Martha Overcash McQueen and the late John McQueen. He was a veteran of the US Army. He retired in 1995 from Southland Rebuilders in Charlotte.
His wife, Mary Bostic "Kat" McQueen, preceded him in death on May 31, 1996.
Survivors include two sons, Tony McQueen and his wife, Karen, of Concord and the Rev. Tim McQueen and his wife, Donna, of Dunn; a daughter, Roxann Linker and her husband, Sam, of Kannapolis; his mother, Martha Overcash McQueen of Concord; four grandchildren, Jessica Linker, Chad McQueen, Stephen McQueen and Michael McQueen; and a special friend, Betty Cauble of China Grove.

Nellie Goodnight Karriker

BIRTH DATE: November 14, 1913
DEATH DATE: May 17, 2005

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Nellie Goodnight Karriker, 91, formerly of Birch Street, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at Deal’s Care Inn, following a number of years of declining health and six days of serious illness.
The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Chris Pethel will officiate. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Concord.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lady’s Funeral Home.
Mrs. Karriker was born Nov. 14, 1913, in Cabarrus County, a daughter of the late John Wesley Goodnight and Ada Williams Goodnight. She retired from the spinning room of Cannon Mills.
Survivors include son, Bobby Goodnight of Kannapolis; daughter, Linda Hodge of Kannapolis; grandchildren, Alvin Parham, Michael Hodge and Chris Goodnight; and great-grandchildren, Caitlin Hodge and Grayson Huffstetler.

Sarah Aileen Rollins Burgess

BIRTH DATE: January 8, 1930
DEATH DATE: May 17, 2005

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Sarah Aileen Rollins Burgess, 75, a resident of Britthaven of Piedmont in Albemarle and formerly of Westover Avenue in Kannapolis, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at Britthaven of Piedmont.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 pm Friday, May 20, 2005, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Charles Savage will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 pm Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Ms. Burgess was born January 8, 1930 in Cabarrus County. She was a daughter of the late Clarence Boyd Rollins and Carrie Dee Blackwelder Rollins. She retired from the weave room of Cannon Mills Plant 1 in Kannapolis.
Ms. Burgess is survived by two daughters, Becky Sawyer and her husband, Clyde, of Albemarle and Kathy Vinson and her husband, Jesse, of Emerald Isle, NC; one sister, Alberta R. Hunsucker of Concord; one brother, Bill Rollins of Orlando, FL; four grandchildren; one great grandchildren. She is also survived by Clyde W. Burgess, to whom she was married.

Samuel David Watts

BIRTH DATE: July 19, 1920
DEATH DATE: May 6, 2005

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Samuel David Watts, 84, of 806 Louise Avenue, died Friday, May 6, 2005, at Brian Center of Concord after six years of declining health.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 pm Sunday, May 8, 2005, at Truth Temple. Rev. Garland Faw and Rev. Mark Miles will officiate.
Mr. Watts will lie in-state at the church from 2:30 to 3:00 pm Sunday.
Mr. Watts was born July 19, 1920 in Pageland, SC. He was a son of the late David and Leah Watts. He worked for Cannon Mills until he was drafted. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his service in the Army was over, he worked as a mechanic. He worked at Brothers Tire in Kannapolis and later opened his own shop at home. Mr. Watts was a member of Truth Temple.
Mr. Watts is survived by his wife, Vivian Williams Watts; two sisters, Mary Barnhardt of Kannapolis and Rosa Boyd of China Grove; brother, Jesse Watts of Kannapolis.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be sent to Truth Temple, 2705 Moose Road, Kannapolis, NC 28083.

Taylor Hunter Overcash

BIRTH DATE: February 7, 1921
DEATH DATE: May 3, 2005

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Taylor Hunter Overcash, a resident of Caremoor Retirement Center, Kannapolis, and formerly of 202 Ann Street, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at NorthEast Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.
Born February 7, 1921 in Concord, N.C. he was the son of the late Edd J. Overcash and Laura Hunter Overcash and was a resident of Cabarrus Co. for most of his life. He was married to Virginia Workman Overcash from 1942 until her death in 1999. A brother, E.J. Overcash, and a sister, Kate Overcash, both of Concord, N.C. also preceded him in death.
In early years, he worked for the Coca-Cola Co. and Kannapolis Bakery. He later owned and operated Overcash Foods. After retiring from the mobile catering business, he worked until 1999 as a part-time security guard for Wackenhut Corp. at Pillowtex, Inc. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as a Tech Sgt. in the 30th Infantry Division, Service Co., in the European Theatre, earning many medals including the Bronze Star and Cluster. Mr. Overcash had a patriotic heart and a strong faith in God. Until his health declined, he was a faithful member of the Fidelas Class at Midway United Methodist Church, and served the church in many volunteer roles. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Allen Graham Lodge #695 in Kannapolis, and a member of the former Kannapolis Lions Club.
The family headquarters will be at 1100 Lee Avenue, Kannapolis, home of daughter Jean and husband, Ray. Following a private burial with Masonic Rites conducted by Allen Graham Masonic Lodge, a memorial service honoring the life of Mr. Overcash will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Midway United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dave Cash will officiate. The family will receive friends in the sanctuary immediately following the service.
Survivors include two daughters, Marsha O. Armes and husband, Monte; Jean O. Barger and husband, Ray; one son, Tab H. Overcash; four grandchildren, Monte D. Armes, Jr., and wife, Sherri; Elizabeth B. Freeman and husband, Monty; Jennifer B. Barbee and husband, Scott; and Taylor Overcash II, all of Kannapolis, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Cameryn Armes, Austin Freeman, Hayden Armes, Caroline Barbee, Bailey Freeman, and Baby Armes (anticipated arrival mid-July), all of Kannapolis; and a brother, Donald S. Overcash and wife Lucille, of Concord, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Midway United Methodist Church Building Fund, 108 Bethpage Rd., Kannapolis, NC 28081-4916.
The family sincerely thanks the wonderful staff of Caremoor Retirement Center, and very special friend, Bill Wiles, for all the love, care, and compassion shown to Mr. Overcash.
