CONCORD, NC - Mrs. June Gurley Brooks, 68, of 2425 Wimbledon Street, Concord, died Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at her residence.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2004, at Kerr Memorial Baptist Church. Rev. Stanley Spence will officiate.
The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service in the Fellowship Hall of Kerr Memorial Baptist Church.
Mrs. Brooks was born August 30, 1935 in Kannapolis. She was the daughter of Mrs. Nell Llipe Gurley of Kannapolis and the late Sylvester Crowell Gurley. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Brooks, in addition to her mother, is survived by her husband, J L Brooks; son, Jeff Brooks of Asheville, NC; brother, Eddie Gurley of Kannapolis; and a granddaughter, Courtney Brooks of Asheville, NC.

Ethel Perry Duvall

BIRTH DATE: July 2, 1926
DEATH DATE: February 11, 2004

DURHAM, NC - Mrs. Ethel Perry Duvall, 77, a resident of Durham, and formerly of Kannapolis, died Wednesday, February 11, 2004, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Leon Hawks will officiate. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at their respective homes.
Mrs. Duvall was born July 2, 1926, near Sparta, in Allegheny County, North Carolina. She lived with her parents and nine brothers and sisters. She moved to Kannapolis where she worked in Cannon Mills for more than 25 years. She was married to Lee Vaughn Duvall and raised a son and daughter. After the death of her husband, she moved to Durham, NC where she lived until her death.
Survivors include a son, Roylee Duvall of Durham; a daughter, Tammy Jones Smith of Salisbury; three grandchildren, Emma Duvall, David Smith and Tabitha Smith; one brother, Fletcher Perry of Salisbury; and two sisters, Charlotte Lewis of Granite Falls, NC and Joyce Smith of Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania.

Louise Green Allen

BIRTH DATE: October 27, 1914
DEATH DATE: February 12, 2004

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Louise Green Allen, 89, a loving and special person, of Rose Avenue, Kannapolis, died Thursday, February 12, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2004, at First Baptist Church. Dr. Tom Cabaniss will officiate. A graveside service will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, SC.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the parlor at First Baptist Church. At other times they will be at their respective homes.
Born October 27, 1914, in Pacolet, SC, she was a daughter of the late Martin Luther Green and Nettie Johnson Green. She retired after 42 years of service from Cannon Mills, Plant One. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was a member of the King's Daughter's Sunday School Class. Her husband, Frank Allen, preceded her in death.
Survivors include six nieces, Lora Howell of Winter Haven, FL, Caroline Weathers and Florene Bryant, both of Pacolet, Frances Knox of Lyman, SC, Frances Ballard and Patricia Cook, both of Spartanburg, SC; a nephew, Billy Coggins of Boiling Springs, SC; and a longtime friend, Faye Brown of Kannapolis.
Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, Family Life Center, 101 N. Main Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

William Floyd Lipe

BIRTH DATE: March 22, 1910
DEATH DATE: February 15, 2004

TROUTMAN, NC - Mr. William Floyd Lipe, 93, of Perry Road, Troutman, NC, died Sunday, February 15, 2004, at Big Elm Nursing Center in Kannapolis, following two weeks of serious illness.
A graveside service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2004, at St. Michael's Cemetery in Troutman. Rev. Mark White will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 11 to 12:00 noon Wednesday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Mr. Lipe was born March 22, 1910 in Troutman, NC. He was a son of the late John Alexander Lipe and Nancy Lou Overcash Lipe. He was retired from Cannon Mills in Kannapolis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eulia Sherrill Lipe, in 1991, two brothers, Otto Lipe and Marvin Lipe, and a sister, Pearl Lipe McCormac.
Mr. Lipe is survived by five sisters, Grace Gregory, Nell Tedder, and Pauline Westmoreland, all of Kannpolis, Mary Lou Johnson of Mooresville, NC, and Faye Cook of Concord; and two brothers, Homer Lipe of Kannapolis and Ray Lipe of Morganton, NC.

Lillie Ervin Oliphant

BIRTH DATE: February 19, 1913
DEATH DATE: March 9, 2004

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Lillie Ervin Oliphant, 91, of 7510 Spring Acres Drive, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Central Baptist Church. The Rev. Curtis Parker and the Rev. Ralph Robinette will officiate. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at their respective residences.
Born February 19, 1913, in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Ervin and Minnie Eudy Ervin. Mrs. Oliphant retired in 1978 from Linn-Corriher Mills in Landis. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and Poston Perkins VFW Post 8989 Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Oliphant, who died November 15, 1960; and a son Robert D. Ritchie of Michigan.
Survivors include a daughter, Bettie Clark of Kannapolis; a brother, Robert Ervin, Jr. of Kannapolis; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Rebecca Ann Coxey Benfield

DEATH DATE: March 9, 2004

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Rebecca "Kookie" Ann Coxey Benfield, 59, of 2421 Lane Street, Kannapolis, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. J.E. Earwood will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at 2502 Brookside Ave., Kannapolis
Mrs. Benfield was born October 7, 1944, in Iredell County. She was a daughter of the late John A. Coxey and Docia Cross Coxey. She was a member of God's Tabernacle and a former Fieldcrest-Cannon employee.
Mrs. Benfield is survived by her husband, Eric "Delane" Benfield; daughter, Celena "Dee Dee" Graham of Kannapolis; son, Eric Scott Benfield of China Grove; sister, Marcella "Sis" C. Walters of Kannapolis; brothers, Cecil Vernon Coxey of Weaverville, Robert "Buddy" Coxey of Cleveland, and Terry "Mickey" Coxey of Kannapolis; and three grandchildren.

Hector J. Marquez

BIRTH DATE: July 29, 1970
DEATH DATE: March 8, 2004

Carmel, Indiana - Hector J. Marquez, 33, of 1027 Woodridge Court, Carmel, Indiana, and formerly of Kannapolis, died Monday, March 8, 2004, in Fishers, Indiana.
A wake service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted, 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Edward Gray will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at their respective homes.
Born July 29, 1970, in Durango, Mexico, he was a son of Hector Marquez Villegas and Petra Hernandez Ivanes of Concord. He was a construction worker with R. T. Moore Construction Company. Mr. Marquez was a member of Carmel Apostolic Church.
Survivors include his parents, Hector Marquez Villegas and Petra Hernandez Ivanes of Concord; two daughters, Crystal Marquez and Ashley Marquez; a son, Hector Marquez, Jr.; and four sisters, Maria Teresa Marquez Hernandez, Ana Luisa Marquez Hernandez, Elena Marquez Hernandez and Artemiza Marquez Hernandez.

Esther Wilson-Sloop

BIRTH DATE: October 20, 1918
DEATH DATE: March 19, 2004

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Esther Overcash Wilson-Sloop, 85, formerly of Beaver Road, Kannapolis, died Friday, March 19, 2004 at NorthEast Medical Center. She had been in declining health for a number of years and was seriously ill for one week.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 21, 2004, at St. Enoch Lutheran Church. The Rev. John Mark Beam and the Rev. Constance Garrett will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of a son, Wayne Wilson, 6815 Beaver Road, Kannapolis.
Born October 20, 1918 in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late G. L. Overcash and Rella Rodgers Overcash. She was a longtime member of St. Enoch Lutheran Church and resident of the Enochville community.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert Wilson, in 1992, and her second husband, Oscar Sloop.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne Wilson and his wife, Betty, and Melvin Wilson and his wife, Carole, all of Kannapolis; five grandchildren, Todd Wilson and his wife Dawn, Eric Wilson and his wife Donna, Michael Wilson and his wife Kelly, all of Kannapolis, Susan Lambert and her husband Donald of Concord, Dale Wilson and his wife Stacey of China Grove; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to St. Enoch Lutheran Church, 701 Campbell Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28081.

Verlie Munday Sherrill

BIRTH DATE: May 10, 1915
DEATH DATE: March 21, 2004

LENOIR, NC - Mrs. Verlie Munday Sherrill, 88, of 318 Main Street, NW, Lenoir, and formerly of South Main Street, Kannapolis and Bishop Lane in Concord, died Sunday, March 21, 2004 at Caldwell County Hospice.
A memorial service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Concord. The Rev. Jim Bowen and the Dr. Garret Dawson will officiate.
The family will receive friends following the service in the memorial hall at the church. At other times they will be at their respective homes.
Born May 10, 1915, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late Grover Munday and Ella Arthurs Munday. She retired several years ago from Cannon Mills, Plant Four. She was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Macy Everett Sherrill, who died January 28, 1982; a sister, Faye Harrington; and two brothers, Manley Munday and Robert Munday.
Survivors include a son, Ronald D. Sherrill of Kannapolis; two daughters, Becky Stevens of Lenoir and Judy Black of Lexington; two sisters, Virginia Munday Rodgers of Kannapolis and Era Munday Wright of Madison, Alabama; eight grandchildren, Dr. T. Micheal Sherrill of Concord, David E. Sherrill of Greensboro, Nicole Sherrill Motley of Concord, Leigh Ann Black Myers of Lexington, Caroline Black Bowen and Jacqueline Black Lockemy, both of Kernersville, Amelia Stevens of Celo and Rebecca Stevens of Greensboro; and eight great-grandchildren.

Banks Manulee Beaver

BIRTH DATE: June 21, 1916
DEATH DATE: March 25, 2004

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Banks Manulee Beaver, 87, of 1008 Sloop Avenue, Kannapolis, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Big Elm Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Randy McWaters, the Rev. Gene Edwards and Dr. Greg Pierce will officiate. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Born June 21, 1916 in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Sloan P. Beaver and Mamie Rodgers Beaver. He retired several years ago from Cannon Mills. Mr. Beaver was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member and former Sunday School teacher at Lane Street Baptist Church. His love for the Word of God was known to all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Ollie Lee Lambert Beaver; two daughters, Barbara Watts and her husband, Glenn, and Priscilla McWaters and her husband, Randy, all of Kannapolis; two sisters, Gladys Tate of China Grove and Marie Wagner of Salisbury; one brother, Elmer "Bill" Beaver of Granite Quarry; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
