Maudie Louise Cook

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Miss Maudie Louise Cook, 82, of 3155 Moose Road, Kannapolis, died Saturday, January 3, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Gene Beaver will officiate. Entombment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the home of a great-niece, Jennifer Stout, 485 Red Leaf Lane in China Grove.
Born November 19, 1921, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Adam Alexander Cook and Onnie Lee Wensil Cook. She was a homemaker and caregiver and formerly worked at Cannon Mills, Plant Four in Kannapolis. She was of the Baptist faith and was a very loving and caring person who will be greatly missed by her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, James Edawrd Cook, Clifford Cook, John Cook, Richard Cook and Charles Cook.
Survivors include a four nieces, Diane Cook Ford of Kannapolis, Ramona Hancock, Joyce Moose and Colleen Sutton, all of Concord; and a nephew, Richard Cook, Jr. of Concord.

Ray Spencer Cody

DEATH DATE: January 6, 2004
KANNAPOLIS, NC - Rev. Ray Spencer Cody, 95, a resident of Brian Center Health and Retirement, and formerly of First Assembly Living Center in Concord and Brookshire Avenue in Kannapolis, died Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at the Brian Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church. The Rev. Evelyn Browning and the Rev. Tom Whidden will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The body will remain at Lady's Funeral Home until taken to the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of a daughter, Raychel Carroll, 615 Peacehaven Road, Kannapolis.
Born February 16, 1908, in Stanly County, he was a son of the late Pierce Monroe Cody and Grace May Hatley Cody. He obtained an Associates degree from Rutherford Junior College and an AB degree from Catawba College in 1931. He graduated from Duke University School of Religion with a Bachelor of Divinity Degree in 1936. Once licensed to preach, Ray served as a supply pastor in Broadway, North Carolina in the Eastern North Carolina Conference.
After his marriage to Bertha Morton Cody in 1936, Ray joined the Northern New York Conference serving charges in Oswego Center, New Haven, Great Bend, and Tupper Lake, New York. After serving 14 years, he transferred to the Western North Carolina Conference in his home state where he became a faithful ambassador for Christ. From 1952 until his retirement in 1973, Ray ministered to churches in Greensboro, Lowesville, Lincolnton, Terrell, Triplett, Kannapolis, and Sparta, North Carolina. Leading people to Christ was one of Ray Cody's missions. He especially enjoyed planning activities for the youth in his churches. He was a Boy Scout Master and enjoyed participating in Scouting activities. After retirement, Ray and Bertha bought a home in Kannapolis. In 1978, he was asked to preach at South China Grove United Methodist Church where he shared his love of God with the congregation there for one year. In 1981, he was awarded the honor of Pastor Emeritus at Mount Mitchell United Methodist Church, for his lifetime of service. He and his wife faithfully attended Mount Mitchell United Methodist Church for 25 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Bertha Morton Cody, who died June 2, 2003; and a brother, Wilbert Franklin "Bill" Cody, who died December 23, 1981.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy C. Porter and her husband, Harry, of Seabrook, Texas, Raychel Carroll and her husband, Danny, of Kannapolis; four sisters, Myrtle C. Allen of Eatonton, Georgia, Mary Frances Harris and Jewel C. Medlin, both of Arlington, Virginia and Lucille C. Nance of Albemarle; four granddaughters, Christine Hoyle of Lincolnton, Valerie Marcott of LaPorte, Texas, Kimberly Page and Sara Carroll, both of Kannapolis; five great-grandchildren, Shannon Hoyle and Kasey Hoyle, both of Lincolnton, Courtney Allen of LaPorte, TX, Turner Page and McKenzie Page, both of Kannapolis.

Gene Cilbrith

DEATH DATE: January 8, 2004
KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Gene Cilbrith, 82, owner of Utopia Exotic Birds, passed away at his home Thursday, January 8, 2004, after several months of illness.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 11, 2004, at Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times, they will be at the residence.
Mr. Cilbrith was born May 2, 1921, in Meade County, KY. He was the son of the late Paul F. Cilbrith and Laura Beaver Cilbrith. He retired from a Ford Motor Company dealership in Florida and relocated to Kannapolis in 1992 where he and his wife, Barbara, opened Utopia Exotic Birds. He served in the Army and traveled extensively throughout Europe, Germany and France.
Mr. Cilbrith is survived by his wife, Barbara Holloway Cilbrith of Kannapolis; two daughters, Susan Leeds of Dallas, TX and Regina Moreno and husband, Manny of Miami, FL; two sons, David Cilbrith and wife, Joyce of Orlando, FL and Bobby Heath of Homestead, FL; a former daughter-in-law, Angie Heath of Auburn, AL; five grandchildren, Rachel Cilbrith, Shane Perlowin, Misty Dunson, Crystal Moreno, Gregory Moren; and a great-grandchild, Colton Dunson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County, Post Office Box 1235, Concord, NC 28026-1235.
The family would like to thank their many friends and Hospice of Cabarrus County for the wonderful and caring support throughout Gene’s illness.
Allen Lloyd Bryant

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Allen Lloyd Bryant, 85, of 764 Arden Court, Martinsburg, WV, and formerly of Stone Avenue in Kannapolis, died Friday, January 16, 2004, at Shenandoah Nursing and Rehabilitation in Charles Town, WV.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Curtis Parker and the Rev. Ralph Robinette will officiate. Interment will follow at Shiloh United Church of Christ Cemetery in Faith.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Born January 23, 1918, in Kannapolis, he was a son of the late Allen Cleveland Bryant and Lula Ida Chandler Bryant. He retired several years ago from Martin Marietta. Mr. Bryant was a member of Central Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives, Anna Mae Borozzi Bryant, who died May 1, 1977, and Jeanette Peeler Bryant, who died March 25, 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Kay Bryant Keyes of Martinsburg, WV; three sons, Francis Bryant of Aberdeen, Maryland, Robert Bryant of Littleton, Colorado and the Rev. Michael Bryant of Cambridge Springs, PA; three sisters, Willie Mae Brown of Longview, Washington, Waulena Major and Margaret Reid, both of Kannapolis; one brother, Winfred Bryant of Kannapolis; and many grandchildren.

Edna Van Buskirk Sweetman

CONCORD, NC - Edna Mae R.Van Buskirk Sweetman, 96, a resident of First Assembly Living Center in Concord, N. C., formerly of Greenville, S.C. and Clifton, N. J., and widow of J. Gordon Sweetman, died on January 19, 2004. Edna was the daughter of the late Rosevelt and Elizabeth Pohlman Van Buskirk of Paterson, New Jersey. She was a member of Lee Road United Methodist Church in Taylors, S. C. and served in the choir for many years.
Mrs. Sweetman is survived by two daughters: Joan E. and her husband, John W. Jamieson of Greer, and Bonnie B. and her husband, Bob Waitt of Concord, NC; her daughter-in-law, Elsa Sweetman of Mt. Bethel, Pa. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Gordon Sweetman of N.J., Donna Blake of N.Y., Robin Kettering of Pa., Paul Sweetman, Cynthia J. Ploof, Elizabeth J. Clark, Laura J. Hortis, the Rev. Catherine Jamieson-Ogg, Michele J. McKay all of S.C., Warren Waitt of Fl., Kevin Waitt and Belinda Locke, both of N.C.; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandhildren. She was preceeded in death by a son, G. Evan Sweetman.
Memorials may be made to First Assembly of God Living Center, 160 Warren C. Coleman Blvd., Concord, N.C. 28027, or to a charity of one’s choice. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Nettie Moore Eagle

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Nettie Mae Moore Eagle, 88, a resident of Avante at Concord, and formerly of Leonard Avenue in Kannapolis, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at Avante.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Johnnie Morton and the Rev. Dale Eagle will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the home of a son, Gene Eagle, 921 Klondale Avenue in Kannapolis.
Born July 26, 1915, in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late James Lee Moore and Ila Mae Blackwelder Moore. Mrs. Eagle retired several years ago from the No. 1 weave room of Cannon Mills Plant One.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allie Edmond "Ed" Eagle, who died March 23, 1994, and a son, Roy A. Eagle, Sr.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Juanita Eagle Moffitt of Kannapolis; a son, Earl E. "Gene" Eagle and his wife, Jeanette, of Kannapolis; three sisters, Mary Barrier, Lala Mosley and Beulah Leigh, all of Concord; 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Asa Robert Morgan

CONCORD, NC - Mr. Asa Robert Morgan, 75, of 599 Englewood Street NE, Concord, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Graveside services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2004, at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Marion Fulk will officiate.
Born November 10, 1928, in Concord, he was a son of the late Lane Morgan and Lizzy Dallie Deese Morgan. Mr. Morgan retired from Cannon Mills Company as a quality control supervisor. He was a member of Royal Oaks Optimist Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Gatton Morgan.
Survivors include two daughters, Bobbye M. Casper and her husband Mike, and Jolynn Morgan, all of Concord; two sisters, Florence Fisher and Lillie Mae Coley, both of Concord; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Jimmie Talmadge Smith, Sr.

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Jimmie Talmadge Smith, Sr., 69, of 124 Dundee Drive, Kannapolis, died Monday, February 9, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral services are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Rick Durham and Rev. John Sills will officiate. Entombment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 11 to 12:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith was born February 16, 1934 in Royston, GA. He was a son of the late Corice T. Smith and Littie Brown Smith. He was retired from management of Eckerd Drug in inventory control.
Mr. Smith, in addition to his parents, is preceded in death by a son, Jimmie T. Smith, Jr., in 1993 and three brothers, Gene, James, and L.T. Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Jean Mills Smith; son, Mark Smith of Landis; daughter, Alice Perreault of Aquadale, NC; sister, Joann Goings of Kannapolis; brother, Velton Smith of Little River, SC; three grandchildren, Andrew T. Smith of Phoenix, AZ, Matthew and Joey Perreault of Aquadale, NC; and three step-grandchildren, Christopher, Benjamin, and Audra Kirchner, all of Landis.

Mary Francine "Fran" Basinger

CONCORD, NC - Mrs. Mary Francine "Fran" Basinger, 80, a resident of Avante of Concord and formerly of Kannapolis, died Sunday, February 8, 2004, at Avante of Concord.
A graveside service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2004, at St. Marks Lutheran Church Cemetery in Salisbury. Rev. Leon Hawks will officiate.
Mrs. Basinger was born November 7, 1923 in Kannapolis. She was a daughter of the late Lonnie Mitchell Basinger and Mary Smith Basinger. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Basinger is survived by a nephew, David Basinger of Fort Mill, SC.
Jerry Lee Tucker

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Jerry Lee Tucker, 49, of 807 Alma Avenue, Kannapolis, died Monday, February 9, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center after a number of years of declining health.
Funeral services are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Billy Clayton will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence on Alma Avenue.
Mr. Tucker was born July 5, 1954 in Rowan County. He was a son of Mary Basinger Tucker of Kannapolis and the late Jason Clinton Tucker.
Mr. Tucker, in addition to his father, is preceded in death by his son, Rex Allen Tucker.
Mr. Tucker, in addition to his mother, is survived by his daughter, Wendy Burris of Kannapolis; two brothers, Rex and Carl Tucker, both of Salisbury; sister, Virginia Plummer of Kannapolis; two grandchildren, Jacob and Joseph Clontz; and two step-children.
