CONCORD, NC - Mrs. Terry Lee McClung Bland, 47, of 5130 Northwest Cabarrus Drive, Concord, died Thursday, December 4, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center, following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 7, 2003, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Lewisburg, WV. The Rev. Stewart Farley will officiate. Interment will follow at McLean Cemetery in Roncevert, WV.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday, with prayer at 8:00 p.m., at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis, and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Lewisburg, WV.
Born March 5, 1956, in Lewisburg, WV, she was a daughter of Peggy Jones McClung of Lewisburg, WV and the late Lanty K. McClung. She had lived in this area for 20 years and was employed with the Cabarrus County School System as a maintenance worker at Harris Road Middle School. She was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Richard Keith Bland, in June 1981.
Survivors in addition to her mother include her husband, Larry R. Bland of the home; a son, Chadd Matthew Bland of the home; two sisters, Lanni McClung and Patricia A. McClung, both of Lewisburg, WV; two brothers, William K. McClung and his wife, Patty, of Centreville, VA and Larry K. McClung and his wife, Claudia, of Arlington, VA.

Calvin Melton Lake

ROCKWELL, NC - Rev. Calvin Melton Lake, 84, died Thursday, December 11, 2003, at Avante at Concord.
Funeral services will be conducted 12:30 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tom Sandquist will officiate. Interment will follow at the National Cemetery in Salisbury.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Born January 22, 1919, in Absecon, NJ, he was a son of the late Vincent Ira Lake and Mary Ida Brittain Lake. He was a retired Baptist minister and previously served as a missionary with American Missions.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert Lake; one sister and two brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Armstrong Lake; two daughters, Jean Commerford and her husband, Tom, of Kannapolis and Nancy Gibson and her husband, Bill, of Ventnor, NJ; three sisters, Doris Lord of Linwood, NJ, Leona Ryan and Frances Streaker, both of St. Leonard, MD; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Edwards Ashbaugh

CONCORD, NC - Mrs. Dorothy Edwards Ashbaugh, 78, of 5000 Aaron Road, Concord, died Saturday, December 13, 2003, at her home, following a year of declining health.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Born April 3, 1925, in Atlanta, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Russell and Nell Edwards.
Survivors include a daughter, Sherry A. Blondeau of Fayetteville, Georgia; two sons, John L. Ashbaugh of Mt. Pleasant and Russell G. Ashbaugh of Concord; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

J C Nelms

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. J C Nelms, 81, of 809 West C Street, Kannapolis, died Monday, December 15, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Otis Snow and the Rev. David Christy will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born February 16, 1922, in Franklin County, Georgia, he was a son of the late J. J. Nelms and Minnie Bray Nelms. He retired several years ago as an overseer in the Wet Finishing Department of Cannon Mills where he was employed for 45 years. He had lived in this area for 60 years and was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Nelms was a US Air Force veteran of World War II and served in the Flying Tigers.
Survivors include his wife, Johnsie Winecoff Nelms; a daughter, Sandra Gaskey and her husband, Steve, of Kannapolis; a son, Kenneth Nelms and his wife, Mary, of Kannapolis; one sister, Pat Chism of Greenville, SC; and four grandchildren, Stephanie Rudolph of Emerald Isle, NC, Jessica Sharpe of Kernersville, Chad Nelms and Jason Nelms, both of Kannapolis.

Willard Long Scercy

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mrs. Willard "Mollie" Long Scercy, 85, of 4700 Old Concord-Salisbury Road, Kannapolis, died Sunday, December 21, 2003, at her residence.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jim Wellington will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born December 9, 1918, in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late George Cecil Long and Lizzie Neisler Long. Mrs. Scercy retired several years ago from the sewing room of Cannon Mills Company.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. William Edward Scercy.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirlee Dunlap of Charlotte; one son, Max Wayne Scercy of North Wilkesboro; a sister, Luva Wise of Kannapolis; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Alvin Andrew Drye

CONCORD, NC - Mr. Alvin Andrew Drye, 50, of 4911 Poplar Tent Road, Concord, died Sunday, December 21, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at First Wesleyan Church, 301 Bethpage Road in Kannapolis. Dr. Forbis Kivett and the Rev. Harold Adcock will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday in the fellowship hall at First Wesleyan Church. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born June 2, 1953, in Cabarrus County, he was a son of Arthur James Drye of Kannapolis and the late Ruby Furr Drye. He was employed at Ben Mynatt Chevrolet as an auto body repairman. Mr. Drye was active in the Boy Scouts of America and formerly served as the assistant scout master of Troop 34 in Kannapolis. He was also coached basketball and baseball for the Winecoff Youth League and was an avid supporter of the Northwest Regiment and Northwest Football.
Survivors in addition to his father include his wife, Brenda Adcock Drye; two sons, Chad Andrew Drye of Kannapolis and Todd Lee Drye of the home; four sisters, Connie Goodman and her husband Rick, Zelly James and her husband Kevin, and Cindy Drye, all of Kannapolis, Holley Drye of Concord; two brothers, James Drye of Kannapolis, Larry Drye and his wife, Valerie, of Mt. Pleasant; mother and father-in-law, Owen and Gertrude Adcock of Kannapolis; sister-in-law, Janet Voyles and her husband, Tommy, of Kannapolis; and seven nieces and nephews.

Grace Viola Koontz

CONCORD, NC - Grace Viola Thompson Koontz, 100, of 264 Morrow Court, N.E., Concord, NC, formerly of Central Drive, Kannapolis, died Monday, December 22, 2003 at NorthEast Medical Center, after a short, serious illness.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 27, at New Hope Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, with Bishop Leonard H. Bolick and the Rev. Marcus Hovis officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 on Friday evening, December 26, at Lady's Funeral Home, Kannapolis. At other times they will be at the home of a son, K. Michael Koontz, 210 Suburban Avenue, N.E., Concord.
Born January 18, 1903 in Rowan County, NC, she was the daughter of the late James Frank Thompson and Cordia Belle Overcash Thompson. She was a homemaker and active in and a charter member of both The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Kannapolis, and later New Hope Lutheran Church.
She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Jennings Michael Koontz, a great-grandson, five sisters and one brother.
She is survived by two daughters, Gilda Koontz Kuhn of Arden, N.C. and Rosemerry A. Koontz, with whom she resided; two sons, Max A. Koontz of Hendersonville, N.C. and K. Michael Koontz and wife Dianne of Concord; a half-sister, Odessa Thompson of Salisbury, N.C.; a half-brother, Gene Thompson of Rockwell, N.C.; ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

James Caldwell "J.C." Menius

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. James Caldwell "J.C." Menius, 80, of 514 Florence Avenue, Kannapolis, died Saturday, December 27, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.
Funeral services are scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 29, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Bill Cranfield will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Mr. Menius was born October 22, 1923 in Cabarrus County. He was a son of the late Thomas Lucky Menius and Elizabeth Strube Menius. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in World War II. He was retired from Cannon Mills Plant One Bleaching Room. He worked for Beaver Lumber shortly after his discharge from the Army.
Mr. Menius, in addition to his parents, is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Eller Menius, on August 24, 1983, a brother, Thomas E. Menius, and a sister, Maude Menius Rumple.
Mr. Menius is survived by his son, Barry Menius, and his wife, Vesper, of Landis; three sisters, Ruth M. Kerley, Margaret Lentz, and Mary "Babe" Godfrey, all of Kannapolis; a brother, Johnny F. Menius, of Kannapolis; two grandchildren, Kevin Dale Menius, of Kannapolis and Max Caldwell Menius, of Landis; and his longtime friend and companion, Ilene Page, of Concord.

Robert M. Cartner, Sr.

KANNAPOLIS, NC - Mr. Robert Milton Cartner, Sr., 90, a resident of Five Oaks Manor and formerly of Wright Road in Kannapolis, died Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Five Oaks Manor.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Randy Foster will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the home of his son, Bobby Cartner, 129 Springway Drive, Kannapolis.
Born August 29, 1913, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late James Thomas Cartner and Dora Guffy Steel Cartner. Mr. Cartner retired several years ago from the No. 2 weave room of Cannon Mills, Plant One in Kannapolis. He was a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church and a charter member of Allen-Graham Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Hawkins Cartner, who died in September 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Katrina "Tina" Cross of Kannapolis; a son, Robert M. "Bobby" Cartner of Kannapolis; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
