Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Bill Reavis and Pastor Barbara Clodfelter will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9:00 p.m. Friday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of maternal grandparents, Jesse and Vonnie Davis, 670 Bostian Road, China Grove.
Zachary was born July 9, 2004 in Concord, NC. He was the son of Richard Clifton Horne and Heather Michelle Freeman Horne.
Zachary was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Wilson Clifton Horne, paternal great grandfather, Aurthur Williams, paternal great grandmother, Lucy Irene Jackson, paternal great grandmother, Pauline Horne, maternal great grandfather, Ted Freeman, and paternal great grandfather, Henry Horne.
Zachary, in addition to his parents, is survived by his paternal grandmother, Ruby Jean Horne of Kannapolis; maternal grandparents, Frankie Freeman of Kannapolis and Jesse and Vonnie Davis of China Grove; paternal great grandmother, Betty Williams of Kannapolis; paternal great grandfather, Lonnie B. Jackson of Mt. Croghan, SC; maternal great grandmother, Fay Mason of Concord; three aunts, Donna Jackson of Kannapolis, Lee Ann Ward of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; and Jessica Davis of China Grove.

Malinda Browning Hurley

Kannapolis, NC - Mrs. Malinda Browning Hurley, 83, of 209 West 21st Street, Kannapolis, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Rom Kerley will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born July 30, 1920, in Greensboro, NC, she was a daughter of the late John W. Browning, Sr. and Alma Barts Browning. She retired several years ago from the No. 7 spinning room of Cannon Mills Plant One where she was employed for 45 years. She was a member of Mills Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Leo Hurley, who died August 3, 1985; and two sisters, Christine Tyson and Mildred Allen.
Survivors include two brothers, John W. Browning, Jr. and Curtis Lee Browning, Sr., both of Kannapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
Reather Thomason Freeman

China Grove, NC - Reather Thomason Freeman, 88, of 321 Corriher Heights Avenue, China Grove, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville.
A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. David Franks will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of a daughter, Joyce Fish, 122 Tanglewood Drive, Kannapolis.
Born November 15, 1915, in Madison County, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Jake Thomason and Mattie Fitzpatrick Thomason. She was a graduate of Ila High School and was a lifetime member of Ila Baptist Church in Ila, Georgia. She retired in 1981 from the pillowcase department of Cannon Mills Plant One.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Fish and her husband, Ralph, of Kannapolis; three sons, Tommy Gene Freeman of Landis, Jerry Dean Freeman and his wife Rickie of Mooresville and Butch B. Freeman and his wife Christine of Clover, SC; one sister, Ethel Keaton of Peachtree City, Georgia; a brother, J. T. Thomason of Ila, Georgia; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Troy Reynolds

Kannapolis, NC - Mr. Troy Reynolds, 83, of 220 South Enochville Avenue, Kannapolis, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at NorthEast Medical Center after three years of declining health and two months of serious illness.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Susan German will officiate. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Mr. Reynolds.
Mr. Reynolds was born January 17, 1921 in Wilkes County, NC. He was the son of the late E.A. Reynolds and Bertie Linebaugh Reynolds. He was retired from Laxton Construction.
Mr. Reynolds is survived by his wife, Elva S. Reynolds; step-daughter, Donna Hawkins and her husband, David, of Kannapolis; two step-sons, Barry Thornburg of Concord and Dennis Thornburg and his wife, Sherry, of Sanford, NC; two sisters, Cora Spell of Charlotte and Gladys Lankford of Lexington; niece, Pam Osborne and her husband, Terry, of Stanley, NC; nephew, Greg Spell of Charlotte; and step-grandson, Ben Thornburg of Sanford, NC.
Mrs. Nellie Wright

Kannapolis, NC - Mrs. Nellie Wright, 91, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at her home, 704 Sloop Ave, Kannapolis. She was in declining health for many years and seriously ill for two months.
The funeral will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2004, at North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church, 314 W. 12th Street, Kannapolis. The Rev. Steve Beam, Rev. Roland Smith and Rev. Doug Smith will officiate. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in China Grove.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence.
Born June 29, 1913, in Rowan County, Mrs. Wright worked in the spinning room at Cannon Mills, Plant Four until her retirement in 1967. She was a devoted mother and grandmother to all her children. Her home was her haven and her strength and comfort came from her family. She was a lifetime member of North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Wright; and two brothers, Delmer Smith and Harvey Smith.
Mrs. Wright is survived by two daughters, Barbara E. Faggart and her husband, Harold, of Kannapolis and Shirley Bowers of the home; two brothers, the Rev. Roland Smith and Mack Smith, both of Kannapolis; five grandchildren, James Wyatt and his wife, Sherry, Robert Bowers, Kathy Hancock, David Lamonte Bowers and his wife, Pam, and Gwendolyn Morrison; six great-grandchildren, Dustin Wyatt, Holly Wyatt, Marie Hancock and her husband, Eddie, Robert "Junior" Bowers, Jimmy Bowers and Chase Bowers; and two great-great-grandchildren, Dakota Hancock and Austin Hancock.

Joyce Edsell Sides

Concord, NC - Mrs. Dora Joyce Edsell Sides, 94, went to her heavenly rest, on July 20, 2004, at Britthaven of Kannapolis, where she had been a resident for four years and formerly lived at 36 Rich Place in Concord.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel in Kannapolis. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times they will be at the home of a son, Martin Ray (Marty) Sides, 912 Isabelle Street, Kannapolis.
Born June 23, 1910, in Spray, NC, she was a daughter of the late William Pinkney Edsell and Liddie Mae Thomas Edsell. She was a homemaker and loved gardening. She lived for many years in Alexandria, Virginia until she and her husband returned home in 1969 to retire. She greatly enjoyed visiting the mountains of North Carolina where she had lived for a time as a child.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Gee Sides; a sister, Dessie May Edsell; and two brothers, Roy Lee Edsell and William Richard Edsell.
Survivors include three sons, Martin Ray (Marty) Sides and his wife Nancy of Kannapolis, Carroll Franklin Sides and his wife Linda and Jack Morgan Sides of Concord; five grandchildren, Michael H. Sides and his wife Jill of Kannapolis, Melissa (Dede) Sides Plott and her husband Mark of Concord, James E. Sides of Charlotte, Cynthia (Cindy) Widenhouse and her husband Brent of Anchorage, Alaska and Kiva Barbee and her husband Ted of Concord; eight great-grandchildren, Justin Sides, Emily Sides, Jered Overcash, Joshua (Josh) Plott, Courtney Widenhouse, Parker Widenhouse, Tia Barbee and Houston Barbee; and several nieces and a nephew.

Robert L. "Bob" Ervin, Jr.

Kannapolis, NC - Mr. Robert Lee "Bob" Ervin, Jr., 81, of 532 Kiser Avenue, Kannapolis, NC, died Friday, July 2, 2004.
Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2004, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Sarah Weaver will officiate. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the residence and from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Born September 5, 1922, in Cabarrus County, he was a son of the late Robert Lee Ervin and Minnie Kerley Eudy Ervin. He was a 1946 graduate of Wingate College. Mr. Ervin was a former patrolman with the North Carolina Highway Patrol and retired in 1984 from Duke Power Company where he was employed for 32 years. He was a World War II veteran of the US Army and was a life member and past commander of Poston Perkins VFW Post 8989. He was also a member of Allen-Graham Masonic Lodge in Kannapolis and the Scottish Rite and Oasis Shrine of Charlotte.
His wife, Ruby Towell "Jo" Ervin, whom he married in 1955, preceded him in death on September 1, 2000.
Survivors include two daughters, Sherry Goforth and her husband John of Kannapolis and Vickie Smallwood of Hypoluxo, Florida.

Dorothy "Dot" Mae Simmons Waller

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 23, 2004, at North Kannapolis Baptist Church. Rev. Marcus Starnes and Rev. James Lankford will officiate. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury.

Mrs. Waller was born January 29, 1943 in Kannapolis, NC. She was a daughter of the late Clifford Lemuel Simmons and Eunie Mae Dodd Simmons. She was retired from the maintenance department of Hoechst Celanese as a welder. She was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church.
Mrs. Waller is survived by her husband, Charlie S. Waller, Jr.; three daughters, Deanna Thompson and her husband, Billy, Susan Deal, and Lisa Waller, all of Salisbury; three sons, James D. Deal, Jr. of King, NC, Alan Waller and his wife, Marie, Charlie “Bud” S. Waller, III and his wife, Rebecca, all of Salisbury; three sisters, Evie Griffin of Salisbury, Betty Robinson and her husband, Hal, of Concord, Karen Shelton of Kannapolis; two brothers, Lonnie Simmons and his wife, Ina, of Grover, NC, Grover Lemar Tolbert and his wife, Bessie, of Locust, NC; seven grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Irene Sweatt Mullis

Mrs. Mullis was born September 2, 1916 in Marlboro County, SC. She was a daughter of the late Eugene Milton Sweatt and Janie Elizabeth Sweatt. She retired from Cannon Mills after working 36 years in the #7 Spool Room of Plant 1 in Kannapolis. She was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church.
Mrs. Mullis is survived by two daughters, Carole Carithers of Kannapolis and Marie Willis of Mooresville; two sons, Russell Dean Driggers of Azle, TX and Glen Driggers of Kannapolis; sister, Ella Mae Sweatt of Florence, SC; fourteen grandchildren, and a number of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
