Fred Morris Watts

Died: August 2, 2002

Kannapolis, NC - Mrs. Fred Morris Watts, 96, of 1917 Glenwood Street, Kannapolis, NC, died Friday, August 2, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Sunday, August 4, 2002, at Franklin Heights Baptist Church. Rev. Tim Jernigan will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 PM Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
Mr. Watts was born January 21, 1906 in Alexander County, NC. He was a son of the late John M. Watts and Amanda Elnora Herman Watts. He was employed at Cannon Mills in the Packing Department for 45 years until his retirement in 1972. He moved to Kannapolis in 1927. He married Lois Brookshire on June 30, 1928. He was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church and Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Watts attended James D. Vaughn School of Music in Lawrenceburg, TN in 1927 and 1930. Mr. Watts was active in First Baptist Church aand sang with the Kannapolis Quartet regularly at revivals, church services, funerals, and singing conventions. He also taught singing schools and directed music in more than 100 revivals in Iredell, Alexander, Rowan and Cabarrus counties. He was a director of music at Shadybrook, North Kannapolis, Franklin Heights, and Blackwelder Park Baptist Churches from 1947 to 1977. He was an avid gardener and was well-known for his delicious tomatoes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl, Bill, Herman, and Ned Watts, and four sisters, Ada McLeod, Daphne Mooney, Blanche Johnson, and Beatrice Bebber.
Mr. Watts is survived by his wife of 74 years, Lois Brook Watts; daughter, Shirley Marie Watts of Nashville, TN and Kannapolis; sister, Thelma Deal of Taylorsville, NC; sister-in-law, Hazel Bebber Watts of Kannapolis; and many nieces and nephews.

Marie Sherrill Teague

Born: November 25, 1920
Died: September 15, 2003

China Grove, NC - Mrs. Marie Sherrill Teague, 82, of 1325 Highway 153, China Grove, died Monday, September 15, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, at Landis Baptist Church. The Revs. Billy Honeycutt, Richard Horn, Curtis Parker and Ralph Robinette will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The body will remain at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at their respective homes.
Born November 25, 1920, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Edwin Sherrill and the late Nora Mae Kennedy Sherrill. Mrs. Teague retired several years ago from Cannon Mills, Plant Four in Kannapolis. She was a lifetime member of Landis Baptist Church. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Everette Teague, on September 25, 1987; and two sisters, Jessie Faye Sherrill and Hazeline Ervin Sherrill.
Survivors include a daughter, Doris Ballard and her husband, Larry, of China Grove; two sons, Lanny Teague and his wife, Georgia, of Statesville, Ronnie Teague and his wife, Debbie, of Kannapolis; a sister, Elizabeth Keller of Statesville; one brother Paul Sherrill of Statesville; seven grandchildren, Larry Ballard, Jr., Jessica Teague, Sarah Teague, Elizabeth Teague, Angela Moon, Julie Hargett and Kristie Cress; and three great-grandchildren.

Robert Victor Measmer

Born: March 5, 1929
Died: September 15, 2003

Concord, NC - Mr. Robert Victor Measmer, 74, of 4308 Orphanage Road, Concord, died Monday, September 15, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 PM Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Steve Sexton and Rev. Tim McQueen will officiate. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 PM Wednesday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of a son, Steve Measmer, 713 Flicker Street, Concord.
Mr. Measmer was born March 5, 1929 in Concord, NC. He was a son of the late Fred Alexander Measmer and Cary Dennis Measmer. He was retired from the NC Department of Transportation after thirty-five years of service. He was a life long member of Fisher Street Baptist Church.
Mr. Measmer was preceded in death by his wife, Monteen Bostic Measmer, on March 7, 1998.
Mr. Measmer is survived by three sons, Ray Steven Measmer and Ronnie Floyd Measmer, both of Concord, Johnnie Lloyd Measmer of Savannah, GA; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Watts and Miss Leola Measmer, both of Kannapolis; two brothers, Grady Measmer and Carl Measmer, both of Concord; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 928, Concord, NC 28026-0928 in memory of Mr. Measmer.

Marshall Bryan Hamby

Born: January 12, 1913
Died: September 25, 2003

Kannapolis, NC - Mr. Marshall Bryan Hamby, 90, a resident of Brian Center Health and Retirement in Concord, and formerly of East 20th Street in Kannapolis, died Thursday, September 25, 2003, at the Brian Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Monday, September 29, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Curtis Parker and the Rev. Ralph Robinette will officiate. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m. Monday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of a daughter, Brenda Edwards, 506 East 20th Street, Kannapolis.
Born January 12, 1913, in Wilkes County, he was a son of the late Martin Hamby and the late Rebecca Spears Hamby. Mr. Hamby retired several years ago from Cannon Mills where he was superintendent of transportation. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and was active in the Men's Bible Class. Mr. Hamby was a former member of North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church where he was Sunday School superintendent, secretary and teacher, and served as church treasurer and a member of the official board. He was also a former member of the Kannapolis Camp of Gideons International.
His wife, Dollie Taylor Hamby, preceded him in death on April 30, 1978.
Survivors include a son, James E. Hamby and his wife, Ann F. Hamby of Mebane; two daughters, Anna H. Binkley and her husband, Kenneth Binkley, Jr. of Winston Salem, Brenda H. Edwards and her husband, Bruce Edwards of Kannapolis; one brother, Calvin Hamby and his wife, Sarah, of Orlando, Florida; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to Central Baptist Church, 1810 Moose Road, Kannapolis, NC 28083.

Curtis Vernon Wood, Jr.

Born: October 17, 1972
Died: September 20, 2003

Kannapolis, NC - Mr. Curtis Vernon Wood, Jr., 30, of 904 Hoke Street, Kannapolis, died Saturday, September 20, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at Lane Street Church of God. Rev. Wade Easom will officiate. Entombment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9:00 PM Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of a sister, Kelly Ledbetter, 205 Oakdale Avenue, Kannapolis.
Mr. Wood was born October 17, 1972 in Concord. He was the son of Brenda Chewning Wood of Kannapolis and the late Curtis Vernon Wood, Sr. He was an Emergency Nurse and was employed by HRMC at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. He formerly worked at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord and Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC.
At the age of 13, he became a champion motocross competitor. He truly loved his family and was a member of Lane Street Church of God. One of the things he loved best was riding his Harley and taking his son boating and fishing. He graduated with honors in 1991 from Northwest Cabarrus High School where he was named to Who’s Who in Americas High Schools and was inducted in the National Honor Society. He also served as a governor’s page while attending high school. He graduated from Louise Harkey School of Nursing in 1995 and achieved accreditation as a trauma nurse, BLS instructor, and was appointed a medical examiner for Cabarrus County.
Mr. Wood, in addition to his mother, is survived by his wife, Catherine Kilpatrick Wood; son, Keethen Levi "Little Bean" Wood; two sisters, Tracy Wood Tyson and her husband, Wayne, and Kelly Wood Ledbetter and her husband, Billy, all of Kannapolis; two nieces, Meredith Miller and her husband, Sammy, and Ashley Tyson; two nephews, David Tyson and Brendon Tyson; two great nieces, Madison Miller and Zoie Miller.

Stamey Emmet "Jim" Torrence, Jr.

Born: August 5, 1929
Died: October 4, 2003

Salisbury, NC - Mr. Stamey Emmet “Jim” Torrence Jr., 74, of 245 Stamey Lane, died Saturday, October 4, 2003.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Monday, October 6, 2003, at Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jim Strickland will officiate. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday at Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the residence at 245 Lois Lane in Salisbury.
Mr. Torrence was born August 5, 1929 in Cabarrus County. He was the son of the late Stamey E. Torrence Sr. and Carrie Gardner Torrence. He was a retired master carpenter for Cannon Mills.
Mr. Torrence is survived by four daughters, Julie Paxton, of Enochville, Lori Womble of Mount Ulla, Benita McDonald of Kannapolis and Shelia Stough of Salisbury; a son, James Torrence of Kannapolis; a sister, Ann Love of Kannapolis; twelve grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County, Post Office Box 1235, Concord, NC 28026-1235.

Marie Stepp Bridges

Born: May 18, 1930
Died: October 2, 2003

Concord, NC - Mrs. Marie Stepp Bridges, 73, of 6011 Blue Ridge Drive, Concord, NC, died Thursday, October 2, 2003, at her residence.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 PM Saturday, October 4, 2003, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Forbis Kivett will officiate. Burial will be at the National Cemetery in Salisbury.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:15 PM Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bridges was born May 18, 1930 in East Flat Rock, NC. She was a retired Registered Nurse at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital with over 20 years of service after graduating from Louise Harkey School of Nursing.
Mrs. Bridges is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence V. "Pete" Bridges, Jr., and a brother, Ravanelle Stepp.
Mrs. Bridges is survived by two sons, Thomes David Bridges and his wife, Sharon, of Mooresville, NC and James R. "Rusty" Bridges and his wife, Carol, of Concord; one brother, Dr. Bob Stepp of Thomasville, NC; four grandchildren.

Walter James Little

Born: June 13, 1919
Died: November 2, 2003

Kannapolis, NC - Mr. Walter James Little, 84, a resident of Transitional Health Services of Kannapolis, and formerly of S. Ridge Avenue in Kannapolis, died Sunday, November 2, 2003, at NorthEast Medical Center.
A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery, 4695 Mt. Pleasant Road, Concord. The Rev. Bill Cranfield will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Lady's Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of a sister, Fannie Mae Sherrill, 2100 West C Street, Kannapolis.
Born June 13, 1919, in Cabarrus County, he was a son of the late Henry Calvin Little and Mary Lou Hough Little. He retired several years ago from Cannon Mills, Plant Six. Mr. Little was a veteran of the US Army and served in Germany during World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Fannie Mae Sherrill of Kannapolis; and a brother, Archie R. Little and his wife, Betty, of Concord.

Angie Elizabeth Moser

Born: April 18, 1916
Died: November 7, 2003

Winston-Salem, NC - On November 7, 2003, at 4:30 P.M., Angie Elizabeth Moser of Kannapolis, N.C., died at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. following a long illness. For more than a year she had lived at the assisted living center at Clemmons Village. Angie, born on April 18, 1916, in Chesterfield County, S.C., was the only daughter and the youngest of the four children of Javie Parker and Bessie Sellers Allen. Some ten years after her father’s death in 1916, Angie’s mother married Doss Tucker. Angie had two brothers from that marriage. Only one of Angie’s five brothers, Franklin Tucker, of Kannapolis, N.C., survives. In August 1937, Angie married Walter Glenn Moser of Union County, N.C., who died in 1973.
Angie is survived by her daughter, Joyce Anne Moser, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two sons and their spouses: Harold D. and Carolyn French Moser of Knoxville, TN, and Kenneth A. and Mary Nan Sweeney Moser of Winston-Salem; by seven grandchildren: Andrew Paul and Keri Downing Moser of Sewanee, TN, Anna Elizabeth Moser and Michael O’Hara III, of Flagstaff, AZ, Joseph A. Williams of Raleigh, NC, Jennifer Williams Gaeto of San Francisco, CA, Kelly Frances Moser of Alexandria, VA, Ashley Elizabeth and Dr. Joseph Veneziano of Scarsdale, NY, and John Kenneth Moser of Winston-Salem; and by one great grandson, Bryce Amos Moser of Sewanee, TN.
Angie’s life was one of selfless service to others and to her God. A smile always graced her face and love flowed from her heart. She devoted her life to her family and to nurturing and encouraging the education of her children and grandchildren.
Lady’s Funeral Home in Kannapolis is in charge of the burial arrangements. A private family burial service will be held at Carolina Memorial Park on Monday, November 10, 2003. A memorial service will be conducted by the Reverend Mary Ann Ramsey Bush of Knollwood Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, NC for family and friends at Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 10, 2003. The family will greet friends after the memorial service.
Angie was the best of friends and the greatest of mothers and grandmothers. She will be missed dearly. May she forever rest in peace.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 1100-C South Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or the charity of the Donor’s choice.
The family would like to express their appreciation to all the caring people who participated in Angie’s care, especially Dr. Philip Ray Morrow and Dr. Elizabeth Deterding of Wake Forest University Physicians, the nursing staff on 7 Reynolds and the staff of The Hospice and Palliative Care Center.

Hughes Brown Poston

Died: November 8, 2003

Concord, NC - Mr. Hughes Brown Poston, 84, a resident of Discovery Program at Concord Place, and formerly of 9701 Archer Road, Davidson, died Saturday, November 8, 2003, at Discovery Program.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2003, at Gilwood Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday at Lady's Funeral Home in Kannapolis. At other times they will be at the home of a daughter, Vanessa Crowe, 814 Margate Avenue, Kannapolis.
Born April 5, 1919,in Mt. Ulla, NC, he was a son of the late Walter Lee Poston and Katie Ollie Brown Poston. He retired several years ago from the No. 4 Spinning Room of Cannon Mills, Plant One in Kannapolis. He was an active member of Gilwood Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Burris Poston, on December 30, 1957; a son, Ralph Hughes Poston, on May 1, 1996; three sisters, Katie Lee Cross, Mildred Poston and Lobenia Poston; and four brothers, Walter Poston, Warren Poston, Charles Poston and Samuel Poston.
Survivors include two daughters, Annie Poston Lucas of Greensboro and Vanessa Poston Crowe of Kannapolis; a son, Dwight Poston of Cornelius; two sisters, Hazel Poston Ross and Nell Poston Wall, both of Kannapolis; two brothers, John Coolidge Poston of Salisbury and Howard Taft Poston of Kannapolis; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
