Susie Coy Lawrence Miller
MOCKSVILLE — Susie Coy Lawrence Miller, 91, of Fairfield Road, died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at Forsyth Medical Center.
Born May 30, 1908, in Gillsville, Ga., Mrs. Miller was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Martha Atkins Miller. She retired from Erwin Mills in Cooleemee and was a charter member of Dutchman Creek Baptist Church.
Her husband, W. J. Miller, died Aug. 20, 1957, after 36 years of marriage. A son, Doyle J. Miller, and a daughter, Mytris M. Barns, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Cletus R. Miller, Mocksville; three daughters, Edna M. Angell, Lathel M. Comb and Texola M. Tucker, all of Mocksville; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 26 great-great-grandchildren.
Services: 4 tonight, Davie Funeral Service Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Tuggle and the Rev. Dennis Pressnell. Burial, Liberty United Methodist Church cemetery.
Visitation: 3-4 p.m. today, Davie Funeral Service Chapel.
James Thornwell Neely Jr.
ROCK HILL, S.C. — James Thornwell Neely Jr., 87, of 624 Forest Lane, died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at Piedmont Medical Center.
Born in Rock Hill, Mr. Neely was the son of the late Lillie Earle Sadler and James Thornwll Neely Sr. A lifelong member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, he was also a past president of the Rock Hill Jaycees and the York County Life Underwriters Association. He was a member of the Rock Hill Cotillion Club and graduated from Presbyterian College in 1933.
Mr. Neely was secretary and treasurer of Neely Motor Company and opened Neely Insurance Co. He retired in 1979.
He served as First Lieutenant in Company I of the Rock Hill National Guard before being called to active duty in 1939. He was promoted to Captain with the Fifth Infantry Division, under Gen. George Patton, was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Survivors include his wife, Louis C. Neely; a son, James Thornwell Neely III, Rock Hill; a daughter, Mrs. Steve (Lonnie Lou Neely) Rabon, Salisbury; two sisters, Lillie Earle Neely Townsend, Rock Hill, and Sadler Neely Carter, Anderson, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. William C. Pender, pastor, and the Rev. Susan L. Denne, associate pastor.
Visitation: 7-8: 30 tonight, Bass Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Q. D. Bush
Q. D. Bush, 75, 514 N. Cedar St., died Saturday (Aug. 28, 1999) at Autumn Care Nursing Center.
Born Jan. 9, 1924, in Commerce, Ga., Mr. Bush was the son of the late Lena and Hoyt Bush. He attended Price High School and was a veteran of World War II. He was a truck driver for Johnson Concrete for over 38 years.
His wife, Mary M. Bush, and a daughter, Valiere Bush Bell, preceded him in death.
Survivors include three sons, David P. Bush I and James A. Bush, both of Salisbury, and Ronald S. Bush, Lillington; two daughters, Harriet Bush Atkins, New York, N.Y., and Terri Bush Wiggins, Salisbury; a brother, Theodore Bush, Salisbury; two sisters, Annie Lois Holt and Isabelle Ford, both of Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the home of David Bush, 3430 Hickory Place, in the Spencer Forest subdivision.

William Howard Conkle
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — William Howard Conkle, 81, 745 18th Ave. N.E., a former resident of Salisbury, N.C., died Wednesday (Aug. 25, 1999) at Cypress Palms, Largo.
Born Jan. 7, 1918, in Chester, W.Va., Mr. Conkle was a son of the late Robert Clyde and Anna Mansfield Conkle. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from West Virginia University and his doctorate from Cornell University.
He worked for the Extension Service at West Virginia University; for the United States Agency for International Development in Nicaragua and Guatemala; and for the United States Department of Agriculture.
Mr. Conkle retired to Salisbury in 1979 and served on the Salisbury City Council from 1983-1985. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury.
His wife, Ethel Miller Conkle, and a son, William Conkle Jr., preceded him in death.
Survivors include son Dr. David Conkle, Pensacola, ; daughter Mary Ann Boston, St. Petersburg; sister Mary Mosser, Chester, W.Va.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The body was cremated. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 11) at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Venice.
National Cremation Society of St. Petersburg handled the arrangements.
Geraldine Beaver Crowell
EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Wednesday for Geraldine Beaver Crowell, 61, East Spencer, who died Saturday (Aug. 28, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after six months of declining health and a week of serious illness.
Born June 20, 1938, in Rowan County, Mrs. Crowell was a daughter of the late Ralph and Lula Jones Beaver. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker and a member of Old Country Baptist Church.
Her husband, Robert Lee Crowell Jr., died Oct. 17, 1993.
Survivors include sons Randy and Alan Crowell, both of Salisbury; daughters Wendy Coish and Sandy Powles, both of Salisbury; brother Arnold Beaver, Salisbury; sister Sherry Tysinger, Salisbury; and seven grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 3: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Wade Lomax, pastor, Old Country Baptist Church.
Visitation: 7-8: 30 p.m. , Tuesday, Lyerly Funeral Home.
Fred Wallace Barber
Fred Wallace Barber, 72, 603 Lafayette Circle, died Sunday (Aug. 29, 1999) at the Hefner VA Medical Center after several months of serious illness.
Born Feb. 7, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Barber was a son of the late John Arthur and Betsy Lee Miller Barber. Educated in the Salisbury schools, he had retired from Carolina Rubber Hose. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include sons Tommy Roberts, Kannapolis, Fred W. Barber, Chesapeake, Va., Anthony Barber, Landis, Kevin Barber, Clinton, Md., and Franklin Barber, Ronald Barber, Reginald “Reggie” Barber and Tim Barber, all of Salisbury; daughter Phyllis H. Lee, Cheitenham, Md.; brother Robert Blair, Salisbury; sisters Janet McNeely and Talatha Minter, both of Salisbury, and Faye Flair, Lexington; and 20 grandchildren.

Jarrette Dean Young
The Rev. Jarrette Dean Young, 67, Salisbury, died Sunday (Aug. 29, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 12, 1932, in Barberton, Ohio, Mr. Young was a son of the late Oscar F. and Louise Lovell Young. Educated in the Doylestown, Ohio, schools, he was a graduate of Marion College, Marion, Ind., and Trinity Wesleyan Bible Seminary, Tennessee.
A minister for 45 years, he served at the Salisbury Wesleyan Church and was chaplain for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department when he lived here. He was also chaplain of the Duncan Police Department in Duncan, Okla., while serving as a minister there.
He was a member of Franklin Bible Methodist Church, Franklin, Ohio, and a past conference president of the Ohio Bible Methodist Churches.
Survivors include wife Joan Hyde Young, whom he married Oct. 20, 1956; sons Raymond F. Young, Duncan, Okla., Kenneth D. Young, Franklin, Ohio, and Steven A. Young, Middletown, Ohio; brothers Cecil Young, Doylestown, Ohio, and Ted Young, Akron, Ohio; sister Margie Y. Zornes, Akron, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ernest Mullins, minister, Trinity Wesleyan Church. Burial, 2 p.m. Thursday, Springboro Cemetery, Franklin, Ohio.

Nell P. Woodson
OCEAN ISLE BEACH — Nell P. Woodson, 79, Duneside Drive, died Sunday (Aug. 29, 1999) at Brunswick Community Hospital.
Born June 10, 1920, in Albemarle, Mr. Woodson was a daughter of the late Baxter and Belzora Ingold Poplin. A member of Shallotte Presbyterian Church, she was a service representative for Southern Bell Telephone.
Survivors include husband Thomas Woodson; son Thomas Woodson Jr., Ocean Isle Beach; daughter Lisa W. Brown, Ocean Isle Beach; and two grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. George Lashley and the Rev. Dan Norman.

Bobby Ray ‘B.B.’ Franklin
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Bobby Ray “B.B.” Franklin, 57, 1318 Haywood Ave., who died Sunday (Aug. 29, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a year of declining health and a week of serious illness.
Born May 13, 1942, in Comer, Ga., Mr. Franklin was a son of the late Clinton D. and Ula Mae Hughes Franklin. A Baptist, he worked for Fieldcrest Cannon electrical shop for 37 years.
Survivors include wife Jeannette Hallman Franklin; daughters Rhonda F. Puckett, Salisbury, and Donna E. Orbison, Rockwell; son Derrick R. Franklin, Concord; sisters Elease Page and Gladys Wyatt, both of Kannapolis, Mildred Barnette, Landis, Betty Shinn, China Grove, and Ida Mae Stancil, Concord; brother Junior Franklin, Kannapolis; and seven grandchildren.
