Pridmore, Merle Ross

LEXINGTON -- Merle Ross Pridmore, 87, of Lexington Health Care Center, formerly of 1202 North Main Street, Mt. Holly, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at her residence. She was a native of Gaston County and daughter of the late Luther and Mary Iva Lawing Ross. She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Pridmore.

She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church, Mt. Holly.

She is survived by one son, Martin Pridmore of Salisbury; five daughters, Pat Grindstaff of Belmont, Maxine Brown of Charlotte, Janice Braswell of Mt. Holly, Donna Chandler of Smithfiled, NC, and Deanna Pridmore of Fouroaks, NC; 9 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. Mitchell Murrow, 1pm Friday at First United Methodist Church, Mt. Holly with the burial to follow in Pineview Cemetery in Mt. Holly.

Carothers Funeral Home in Mt. Holly is serving the family.

Morris, Gabriel `Gabe` Andrew

Gabriel `Gabe` Andrew Morris, 21, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. A Memorial Service to celebrate Gabe's life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 26, at Victory Missionary Baptist Church, 3700 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, also at the church.

Gabe was born January 3, 1980 in Monticello, AR. He was a 1998 graduate of West Charlotte High School, attended Florida State University and was presently enrolled at UNCC. He was employed by Hampton Inn Speedway/Panos Corporation. His brother, Jimmy Morris preceded him in death.

Survivors include his loving parents, Charles `Chuck` and Linda Morris of Kernersville, NC; brother, Shawn Michael Morris of Charlotte; two sisters, Blair Morris of Kernersville, NC, Lisa Morris of Norman, OK; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Voncile Morris of Britthaven Nursing Center in Kernersville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gabe's name may be made to Gabriel (Gabe) Morris Scholarship Fund, 1029 Foxfire Road, Kernersville, NC 27284.

Stoner, Virgie Efird

SALISBURY -- Mrs. Virgie Efird Stoner, 71, of Salisbury, died May 24, 2001. Funeral is 2 p.m. Saturday at West Park Baptist Church, Rockwell, NC. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, NC.

Stewart, Evelyn Jean

Miss Evelyn Jean Stewart, 50, of 2029 Erie St. died May 20, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center.

Funeral is 2 p.m. Saturday at Friendship Primitive Baptist Church with Dr. John R. Graham and Elder Levi Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Beatties Ford Memorial Garden, Huntersville. Visitation is 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Survivors include her fiance, Mr. Jeffrey Cisco; adopted daughter, Miss Tinisha Robinson; brothers, Mr. Linnuel Jennings, Mr. Vernon Stewart and Mr. Harvey Stewart; sisters, Miss Flossie Stewart, Mrs. Rosie Stewart-Frieson and brother-in-law, Ronaldo; and Miss Renee Stewart, all of Charlotte; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Arrangements by Richmond Funeral Home.

Smith, Effie Green Francis

NEWTON -- Effie Green Francis Smith, 95, died May 23, 2001, Abernethy Ctr. Graveside srvc May 25, 1PM Holly Mem. Gardens Charlottesville, VA. Memorial 5/27 2PM Spirit Place, Abernethy Ctr. Vstn: following srvc. Drum Funeral Home in charge.

Spears, Carolyn Virginia Smith

CHERAW -- Carolyn Virginia Smith Spears, age 67, died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at her home. Born in Cheraw, she was the daughter of the late Calvin Howard and Lottie Virginia McDonald Smith.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cheraw and an active member of the United Methodist Women and the Kinsey Mulloy Bible Class. She was a Media Specialist at Northeasten Technical College and was formerly a Systems Analyst for J.P. Stevens Delta Mills Plant in Wallace. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and avid seamstress, and enjoyed working in her yard.

Surviving is her husband, Paul Bobby Spears of Cheraw; one daughter, Susan Spears Hudson and her husband, Tansel of Polkton, NC; brothers, Donald Smith and wife, Mary of North Charleston, SC and Howard Smith and wife, Frances of Charlotte, NC; one granddaughter, Madisyn Hope Hudson of Polkton, NC; and mother-in-law, Juanita Spears of Cheraw.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 26, 2001 at 12:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with interment in Old St. David's Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 12:00 in the church parlor.

Cook, Edna Ross

GROVER -- Edna Ross Cook, age 85, resident of 205 Carolina Ave., Grover, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at Kings Mountain Hospital.

A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Laura McSwain Ross. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and was a homemaker and former owner of Edna's Lingerie Shop.

Surviving are her husband, Pinkney Cook of the home; sons, Jerry Cook and wife, Charly, Blacksburg, SC and Louis Cook of Kings Mountain; brother, Hubert Ross, New Smyrna Beach, FL; sister, Mildred Lowman, Hildebran, NC; grandchildren, Renee Wilson and husband Terry, Lawndale, Phillip Cook and wife Abbie, Grover, and Brian and Jeff Cook, both of Kings Mountain; great-grandchildren, Dustin Wilson, Jordon Moore, and Justin Cook.

Graveside funeral service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Grover Cemetery, with Rev. Tim Lowery officiating. Interment will be in Grover Cemetery, Grover, NC. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. today at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain.

Memorials may be made to Grover Rescue Squad, PO Box 158, Grover, NC or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Claus, William Davenport

Mr. William Davenport Claus, 86, of Charlotte, N.C. died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at Mercy Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Frostburg, MD on March 23, 1915, he was a mechanical engineering graduate of Purdue University and spent most of his working career with the Celanese Corporation, first in Cumberland, MD and then in Charlotte. He enjoyed a longtime membership at Carolina Golf and Country Club.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Saturday, May 26, 2001 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte, by The Reverend John Hanic, Celebrant.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Witherup Claus; his three children, William Davenport Claus, Jr. of Flemington, N.J., Martha Ann Claus of Charlotte, NC, Marjorie Lee Claus, Onalaska, WA; one sister, Amelia Ann Shuck of Port St. Lucie, FL; three grandchildren, Matthew Claus of Summit, NJ, Brian Claus of Wilmington, DE and Allison Ford of Charlotte, NC; and one great granddaughter, Abigail Claus of Summit, NJ.

Memorials may be made to St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211.

Nelson, Fred Washington

STATESVILLE -- Mr. Fred Washington Nelson, 82, of Deaton St, died May 22, 2001 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Graveside Service is 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery. Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Barnes, Naomi Chapman

STATESVILLE -- Naomi Chapman Barnes, 83, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001. Graveside service May 26, 11 AM Mt. Neho Baptist Cemetery. Vstn: 7-8:30, May 25 Chapman Funeral Home.

Fulp, Cletus Odell

Mr. Cletus Odell Fulp, formerly of Ivey Drive, died on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at the Brian Center.

He was born on April 16, 1913 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to the late Walter and Nancy Fulp. He was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Porter and by his brother, Spencer Fulp. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Pearl; daughter Betty Ann and husband, Richard Bohart of Charlotte; grandchildren, Wendy and husband, Jay Bezek of Charlotte, Kelly and husband, Mark DeGennaro of New York, NY, Erin Bohart and Richard Bohart of Charlotte; great grandchildren, Peyton Bezek and Matthew DeGennaro; three brothers, Kenneth Fulp of Norfolk, VA, Audrey Fulp of Florence, SC, and Walter Fulp, Jr. of Lexington, NC.

Mr. Fulp graduated from Presbyterian Jr. College in 1933 and received a second degree from Bowling Green University. Mr. Fulp was a Certified Public Accountant. He also was an elementary school principal. He worked for Haskins and Sells and was owner of Mecklenburg Accounting. Mr. Fulp retired from S&W; Cafeterias in 1979, after serving as their secretary/treasurer.

He was a long time member of the Little Church on the Lane Moravian Church where he served as treasurer, trustee and sacristan for many years. Mr. Fulp served as a Mason for 66 years. He was elected a lifetime member of Joppa Lodge No. 530, A.F. & A.M., where he served as Worshipful Master. He served as Joppa Lodge's secretary for 25 years. Mr. Fulp joined the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and was conferred an Inspector General Honorary 33rd Degree. Mr. Fulp also held memberships in the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of Mystic Shrine, Oasis Temple and Mizpah Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star having served as Worthy Patron.

Mr. Fulp will be remembered for his devotion to his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 26, at Little Church on the Lane Moravian Church, 522 Moravian Lane. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. The Fulp family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Harry and Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road.

Memorials may be made to the Little Church on the Lane, 522 Moravian Lane, Charlotte, NC 28207. Please designate memorials to the Parker Building renovations.

Pegues, Calvin Dewitt

CHERAW -- Mr. Calvin Dewitt Pegues, 29, died May 23, 2001. Funeral is 1 p.m. Saturday at Robinson A.M.E. Zion Church. Reid's Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Pegues.

Rutherford, Hortence H.

RUTHERFORD COLLEGE -- Mrs. Hortence H. Rutherford, age 88, died May 23, 2001 at Hospice Shytle House of Burke Co. Memorial Saturday, May 26, 4PM Abernethy Memorial United Meth. Ch. Vstn: Fri. May 25, 6:30-8:30, Heritage FS Valdese.

Cobb, Frederick Ambrose

LAURINBURG -- Mr. Frederick Ambrose Cobb, 88, of Scotia Village, Lauringburg, N.C. and formerly of Lumber Bridge, N.C. died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg.

Mr. Cobb was a son of the late William Stephen Cobb and Martha Harper Cobb. He was a native of Robeson County and a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Margaret McDuffie Cobb.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday in Rex Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Mr. Cobb is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Jean Lewis and Mrs. Martha Ellinger and her husband, Dr. Harvey Ellinger, all of Charlotte, N.C. and Mrs. Freda Behm of Grayslake, Illinois; five grandchildren, Amanda, Anna and Andrea Behm of Grayslake, Illinois, Charles Ellinger of Longmont, Colorado and Laura Ellinger Scheid and her husband Michael of Arlington, Virginia.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Saturday, May 26, 2001 at McNeill Funeral Home in St. Pauls, N.C.

Roberts, Steven B.

CHESTER -- Mr. Steven B. Roberts, 50, of 641 DuPree Street, died Thursday, May 24th at his residence.

Service is 4 p.m. Sunday at Westside Baptist Church, with Rev. Mark Chapman and Rev. Curtis Marshall officiating. Interment will be in Chester Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Barron Funeral Home and other times at 562 McDowell Drive, Chester.

Born December 7, 1950 in Chester, Mr. Roberts was a graduate of Chester High School and a retired truck driver. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Westside Baptist Church and the Chester County ABATE.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda Kendrick Roberts; three daughters, Leslie E. Roberts of Chester, Elizabeth Ann Crouch and Rebecca Lynn Crouch, both of Chester; mother, Helen Wishert Roberts of Chester; brother and sister-in-law, Dana and Janet Roberts of Chester; 2 sisters, Marion (Ilda) Campbell of Alpharetta, GA and Paula Morris of Lexington, SC; and a granddaughter, Chelsea Renee Crouch of Chester.

Memorials may be made to Westside Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1049, Chester, SC 29706 or to Orr's Baptist Church, 1266 Lancaster Road, Chester, SC 29706.
