Cunningham, Govenor
Mr. Govenor Cunningham, 86, of 3008 Bellaire Drive, Charlotte, died Friday, May 25, 2001. The family will receive friends during a Wake from 11 a.m. until noon, on Thursday, May 31, 2001 at First Baptist Church-West. A funeral service will follow from 12 noon until 1 p.m. Dr. Ricky A. Woods will officiate. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Mr. Cunningham was born in Winnsboro, SC where he attended public schools. He was a member of First Baptist Church West since 1940; and a faithful member of Sparkling Diamond Lodge #373 Prince Hall where he was affiliated for over 40 years. He was retired as Chief Chef and Cook at Holiday Inn.
He is survived by his wife, Maggie B. Cunningham of Charlotte; son, Micheal Barber of Charlotte; daughter, Debbie Renee Barber of Charlotte; granddaughter, Angela Cunningham McDonald (Harry) of Charlotte; sisters, Ellen Washington (Nelson) of Washington, DC and Mattie L. Newbill (Allen) of Hillcrest Heights, MD; brother, Willie Cunningham (Doris) of Washington, DC; 5 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.
The family extends a special thanks to the doctors in Home Aides, Presbyterian Home Care and Hospice, especially to Dr. Jones, Dr. Olo, Dr. Baily and Dr. Henderson.

Watterson, Robert Baxter
GASTONIA -- Mr. Robert Baxter Watterson, 53, of 129 Queen Anne Lane in Bessemer City, died on May 27, 2001 at his residence.
A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late Walter Houston and Carnella Roach Watterson. He was a cryptograph operator in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Always a child at heart, he loved to write poetry and was always serving others.
Mr. Watterson is survived by one brother, Raleigh Jennings Watterson of Bessemer City, NC.
A graveside service for Mr. Watterson will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2001 at 11 AM, with the Reverend Bob Withers officiating. The family will receive friends at Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia, for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Gaston Memorial Park.

Armstrong, Mary Louise Coon
LINCOLNTON -- Mrs. Mary Louise Coon Armstrong, 98, died Sunday, May 27, 2001. She was born on April 18, 1903 in Vale, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Franklin Coon and Ella Cornelia Baker Coon; her husband, Matthews Edwin (Ted) Armstrong; ten brothers and sisters, Barron, George, Elizabeth, Philip, Marcus, Sarah, Sue Betty, Franklin, Lucy and Robert. Mrs. Armstrong taught school in and around Lincolnton for may years. She had also resided in Rock Hill, SC and Winnsboro, SC. Mrs. Armstrong was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lincolnton. She and her original family grew up in Daniel's Lutheran Church in Vale, NC.
Surviving are a daughter, Betty Jo Carruthers, of Kingsport, TN; two sons, James E. Armstrong of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jerry Q. Armstrong of Calabash, NC; eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
There will be no memorial service. Persons wishing to remember Louise with a gift are encouraged to do so. The family request that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, 201 East Main Street, Lincolnton, NC, or to a school of their choice in Lincolnton or Lincoln County, NC.

Collins, Minnie Evelyn
WAYCROSS, GA -- Miss Minnie Evelyn Collins, 67, died Saturday, May 26, 2001. Graveside service is 10 a.m. Tuesday at Laurelwood Cemetery. The Rev. Donnie Collins will officiating.
She was the daughter of the late Barney E. Collins and the late Rebecca Ann Filyaw Collins.
Miss Collins was a member of Church of God in Waycross, Georgia and was formerly of Rock Hill, SC. She is survived by two sisters, Eunice Bryant of Manning, SC and Elanor Gray of Waycross, GA.
Family will receive friends at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd., Rock Hill, SC on Monday, May 28, 2001 from 7-8:30 p.m.

Houston, Johnny Tavaris `Man`
Mr. Johnny Tavaris `Man` Houston, 22, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 in Jamestown, New York. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at United Missionary Baptist Church, 1115 Hawthorne Lane. The family will receive visitors and friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral. Burial will follow the service at York Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Houston attended High School in Mecklenburg County, and was also a student at Central Piedmont Community College. He worked for Arnold Palmer Cadillac and Alamo Rental Car Company.
Survivors include his loving mother, Jacqueline Houston of the home, and father, Johnnie Houston; brothers, Shamori Houston, Emmanuel Houston, Timothy Houston, all of Charlotte, and John Houston of Asheville, NC; sisters, Chiquita Houston, Toya Houston, Trenika Houston, Nashayla Houston, all of Charlotte, and Ursula Houston of Asheville, NC. Other survivors include grandfather, Marion Jackson; five uncles, eight aunts; two nieces; four nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.
Arrangements are being handled by Beasley Funeral Home.
Vogel, Inez White
Mrs. Inez White Vogel, 92, formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at the Huntersville Oaks.
Born on December 12, 1908 in Spartanburg, SC, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Clyde Gaffney White. Mrs. Vogel was a retired federal government employee, having 29 years of service. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Charlotte. Mrs. Vogel was preceded in death by sisters Patricia Leonard and Louise Huffstetler.
She is survived by her daughters, Janet Jones and her husband, Bill, of Mooresville, and Joan Griffin and her husband, Bill, of Matthews; 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 PM Thursday, May 31, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg, SC, with Reverend Leo Fair officiating.

Edmonds, John Samuel `Sam`
LANCASTER -- Mr. John Samuel `Sam` Edmonds, age 96, of 505 Briarwood Road the home of his daughter, died Tuesday morning, May 29, 2001 at Lancaster Convalescent Center. He was born January 12, 1905 in Anderson County, the son of the late Mr. W. S. Edmonds and Mrs. Lula Hembree Edmonds and was the husband of Mrs. Virginia Lee Edmonds. Mr. Edmonds retired from Reeves Brothers in Bessemer City, NC and was a member of Covenant Baptist Church.
Mr. Edmonds is survived by his wife of 75 years, Mrs. Virginia Lee Edmonds of the home, a daughter, Mrs. JoAnn E. Cox and her husband James F. `Jim` Cox of the home, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Betty Edmonds of LaGrange, GA, a brother, Mr. Luther B. Edmonds of Anderson, SC, 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson.
Mr. Edmonds was preceded in death by one son, Mr. Larry M. Edmonds.
The Graveside funeral service for Mr. Edmonds will be 3:00 PM Thursday afternoon, May 31, 2001 at New Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson, SC by Rev. Jack Couch burial will follow.
The Family of Mr. Edmonds will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside and in lieu of flowers suggest memorial contributions to Covenant Baptist Church, Building Fund, PO Box 578, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Aleem, Al-Hajji Karriem Abdul
Al-Hajji Karriem Abdul Aleem, departed this life on Friday, May 25, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born on December 14, 1943 to the late Mr. Arthur Polk and Sarah Polk. He was a graduate of West Charlotte High School, Class of 1962. Karriem was employed by Yellow Freight for 20 years.
Karriem accepted Al-Islam in 1974. He fulfilled the obligatory duty of the pilgrimage to Mecca in 1984. He was one of the Muezzins (caller to prayer) for Ash-Shaheed Islamic Center. He loved his family and was an inspiration for all.
He leaves his wife, Raushanah A. Aleem; his sons, Cordell A. Polk of New Bedford, Massachusetts, Rahman A. Aleem (Stacy), Malik A. Aleem, Jibreel A. Aleem of Charlotte, NC, and Raheem A. Aleem of the United States Marine Corps, Cherrypoint, NC; his mother, Sarah Polk of Charlotte; sisters, Trinita Polk, Jean Bowman (Bill) of Charlotte and Michelle Wilson of Maryland; grandchildren, Kareem Rahman A. Aleem and Kayla Rebecca A. Aleem; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Gerald Wilson Helms, 57, of Cornelius, formerly of Union County, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. Funeral services were held on Monday, May 28, 2001 in McEwen Colonial Chapel with burial following in Lakeland Memorial Park.
Mr. Helms was born July 13, 1943, in Union County, son of the late Horace Wilson and Cloma Helms Helms. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gayle Helms of the home; one son, Nicky Helms of Matthews; and one brother, Charles Helms of Lenoir, NC.
