Mr. James Willie Smith, (Smitty), of Charlotte, departed this life on Monday, May 28, 2001 at Hospice House of Monroe, NC. funeral service will be held on Friday, June 1, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Little River Zion Baptist Church, Kinards, SC. Rev. James A. Gray will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, May 31, 2001 from 7-8 p.m. in Grier's Chapel.
Survivors include his wife, Maggie N. Smith of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Dana S. Chambers (Rev. E. L. Crosby, Richard Arthur
Richard Arthur Crosby, 47, of Charlotte, died Monday, May 28, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center with complications from kidney disease. He was born June 14, 1953 in Oakland, California to Russell and Dorothy Crosby. He was a graduate of California State University Northridge and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and worked in the oil fields offshore as a geologist and later years as a teacher at Metro School for children with special needs.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 1, 2001 at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Boulevard with the Reverend Stan Heiser officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne Hobbie Crosby; two sons, Joshua Hobbie and his wife, Allyson of Nashville, TN; Nick Hobbie and his wife, Ana and their sons, Javier and Eric and his daughter, Heather; his parents, Russ and Dorothy Crosby of Orlando, FL; and his brother, Russell Crosby of Los Angeles, CA.

Mrs. Alice Roseboro, of 5000 Winchester Street, Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at Valley Nursing Center, Taylorsville, NC. Funeral services will be at 1pm Friday, June 1, 2001 at Mount Carmel Baptist Church with burial in York Memorial Park. Rev. Casey Kimbrough will officiate. The family will receive visitors beginning at 12 noon at the church, prior to the service.
Born in Lancaster County, SC, Mrs. Roseboro was retired in 1987 from Coliseum Inn.

Mr. Edwin Maurice Garner, Jr., 70, of Holly Hill, SC and formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 in a North Charleston nursing home.
Graveside service is 11 AM Friday, June 1, in Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte, with Reverend Elizabeth Graves officiating.
Mr. Garner was born in Union, SC, a son of the late Edwin Maurice Garner, Sr., and Mary Klugh Garner. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a retired insurance underwriter with Marshall General Agency of Charlotte, and Auto Owners Insurance Agency of Charlotte. He was a member of Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church of Charlotte.
Mr. Garner is survived by two sisters, Mary G. Tindall of Holly Hill, SC, and Caroline G. McLaughlin of Davidson, NC; seven nieces, Mary T. Meyer of Holly Hill, Caroline B. Tindall of Saluda, NC, Henrietta T. McAllister of Spartanburg, SC, Lindsay M. Jordan of Raleigh, Jean W. McLaughlin of Penland, NC, Susan M. Kerr of Mooresville, NC, and Caroline E. McLaughlin of Pittsboro, NC.

Thompson, Mary Ruth Braswell
Mary Ruth Braswell Thompson, 77, died Monday, May 28, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital in the Hospice Unit. She was born in Edgecombe County, April 7, 1924, daughter of the late Callie and Mary Hill Braswell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd J. Thompson; step-son, Fletcher Rudolph Thompson; brothers, Lloyd Braswell, Jack Braswell, Dorsey Braswell and Marvin Braswell. Mrs. Thompson was a retired winder for Rocky Mount Mills.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Vickie Diane and Philip T. Ezzell of Wingate, NC; step-daughter, Janice Thompson Watson of Virginia Beach, Va; sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy Love and Joan L. Thompson of Rocky Mount, NC, and Clark and Rama Thompson of Virginia Beach, Va; sister, Christine Braswell Bain of Rocky Mount, NC; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren with another boy to be born in September; and one great-greatgrandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery. Family will receive friends today at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times, at the home of the son, Tommy, 629 Dana Lane, Rocky Mount.

Beatrice Foster Aycock, 84, formerly of Charlotte, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 27, 2001 in Tampa, FL. She is survived by grandson, Frank Aycock of Tampa, FL and wife, Pam as well as two great granddaughters, Nicole and Alysia Aycock. She was pre-deceased by her loving husband, Boyd and son Frank.
Services will be held at McEwen Funeral Home Friday June 1, 2001 at 2pm with Pastor Fleet Kirkpatrick officiating. Viewing will begin 1 hour prior. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her name to Church of the Open Door, 3409 Carowill Circle, Charlotte NC 28209.

Rev. Gary Hunsucker will officiate.
Mrs. Furr was born in Stanly County, NC, was a retired textile worker with Allison Manufacturing of Albemarle, and a member of Canton Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sons, Horace K. Furr, Wayne C. Furr, Calvin L. Furr and Boyd H. Furr, all of Albemarle; daughters, Helen F. Hathcock of Norwood, NC, Ruby F. Rummage of Pleasant Garden, NC, Brenda F. Hill of Oakboro, NC and Evola F. Thompson or Norwood, NC; and brother, Raymond L. Huneycutt of Concord, NC.

CHERAW -- Betty Louise Robinson Gainey, age 55, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at McLeod's Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born in Marlboro County, she was the daughter of the late Sherman and Ollie Rogers Robinson.
Survivors include her sons, Maxie Gainey of Patrick and David Gainey of Cheraw; daughter, Debbie Andrews of Cross, SC; brother, Bobby Robinson of Athens, GA; and sisters, Gertrude Roller of Lexington, NC, Patricia Bryant of Darlington, SC, and Margie Shaw of Cheraw; and 5 grandchildren.

Long, Ernest Edward
NEWTON -- Reverend Dr. Ernest Edward Long, 69, of 1503 Brentwood Drive, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Catawba Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born May 28, 1932 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Albert E. and Jeanette Wilson Long.
Dr. Long was a US Veteran of the Korean War where he served aboard the USS Floyd B. Parks and as a Hospital Corpsman in San Diego, California. He graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1959 and from the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in 1962. He received the Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1979 and the Brotherhood Award from Salisbury Chapter of NCCJ.
Pastor Long served in North Carolina as pastor of Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church in China Grove; Nativity Lutheran Church in Arden; and St. John's Lutheran Church in Salisbury. He also served as pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hollywood, Florida and as Pastor/Developer of Living Springs Lutheran Church in Columbia, SC.
Pastor Long also served with the Board of World Missions in Liberia, West Africa from 1964 to 1971. In Liberia, he served as pastor of Bomi Hills parish. He was director of an Ecumenical Christian Education Curriculum Design Project for the Lutheran, Methodist, and Episcopal churches in Liberia, Ghana and Sierra Leone.
He was a member of Beth Eden Lutheran Church in Newton, where he served on the Evangelism Committee and as a member of the LSA Foundation.
Pastor Long was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Long Huffman and a son, G. Shannon Long. Survivors include his wife, Jewel Deal Long; a son, Derek K. Long and wife, Ginger W. Long of Durham; a grandson, Elijah Edward Long of Durham; and brothers, Eugene Long and wife, Dianna Long of Newton and Donald Long and wife, Patty Long of Maiden.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 1, 2001 at Beth Eden Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dr. Bill B. Mims Jr., Bishop Leonard Bolick and Rev. Ronnie Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery. Pastors will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6-8:30 p.m. on Thursday at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton.

Edwards, Vilous Bronson
LINCOLNTON -- Mr. Vilous Bronson Edwards, 65, of 742 High Shoals Road, died May 29, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Edwards was a native of Shelby, the son of the late Ralph and Quille Mae Gossett Edwards. He was a veteran of the US Army and was retired from WSOC, having worked as a tape editor.
Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife, Lena Wright Edwards of the home; son Robert Wayne Stroupe of Lowell, NC; daughters Starlene Edwards and Crystal Edwards, both of High Shoals; brothers Flay Edwards of Salisbury, and Jerry Edwards of York, SC. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tom Edwards.
Funeral services for Mr. Edwards will be held on Friday, June 1, at 11 AM at The Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia. Burial will be at High Shoals Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia, Thursday evening, 7-8:30 PM, and other times at the home.

Ragin, David Adam
Mr. David Adam Ragin, 46, of 1526 Turnstone Court, was born on September 15, 1954 in Union County, NC. He ended his life's mission on May 17, 2001.
David graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in 1972, and was employed as a paint mixer. He attended Clement Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Bendetta Ferguson Ragin; his beautiful and beloved daughter Davida; his parents Calvin and Catherine Ragin; his brothers and sisters Calvin (Nick) Ragin, Reginald Ragin, Pamela Ragin and Sydney Ragin. He was preceded in death by his brothers Ronald and Gerald Ragin. He is also survived by his in-laws, Benjamin and Willie Ferguson, brother-in-law Benjamin Ferguson, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, May 25 in the Family Mortuary Chapel, 2310 Statesville Avenue. Visitation will be held from 7-8 pm on Thursday, May 24 at Family Mortuary.
