Joan Louise Norberg

Joan Louise Norberg of Madison Heights died Sunday, November 7, 2004 in the Lovingston Health Care Center.

Born in Amherst County, she was the daughter of Madeline McLane Norberg of Madison Heights and the late Leonard Erick Norberg. She was retired from the Central Virginia Training Center and was a member of Amelon United Methodist Church.

In addition to her mother, Joan is survived by three sisters, Phyllis N. Burnley and her husband, Robert of Monroe, Peggy N. Thompson and her husband, Bob of Fayetteville, NC, and Linda N. Collins of Lynchburg; two brothers, L. Erick Norberg and his wife, Mary Ellen and Jerry W. Norberg and his wife, Vicki, both also of Lynchburg; seven nieces; four nephews, and thirteen great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at Amelon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Arthur Wolz, Jr.

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of Joan’s mother, 114 Stumps Hill Road, Madison Heights.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the All Saints Bell Tower Fund of Amelon U.M. Church, P.O. Box 739, Madison Heights, VA 24572.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Joan’s special caregiver, Lisa Stone and to the staff of the Lovingston Health Care Center.

Mr. Robert E. Senter

Mr. Robert E. Senter, age 80 of Morganton died Sunday, April 10, 2005. He was born to the late Wray Maxton Senter and Lucy Ray Senter on November 17, 1924 in Buncombe County. Mr. Senter was retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture with over 53 years of service. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church Deaf Mission Church, and was a member of the Nation Fraternal Society for the Deaf and the Table Rock AARP. He was a loving and husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.

Along with his parents he is preceded in death by two sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Helen Jean Robinson Senter of the home; three sons; Jerry Shockley and his wife, Cathy of Lake Lure, Russell Senter and his wife, Beverly, and Ricky Senter and his wife, Candi, both of Morganton; five grandchildren, Marc Shockley, David Shockley, Melissa Shockley, Stephanie Senter, and Cassandra Senter; and three brothers, George Senter and his wife, Mabel of Morganton, Donald Senter and his wife, Janet of Schaumburg, IL., and Bruce Senter of Morganton. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at Kirksey Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park with the Reverend Tom Lineberger officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 pm at the funeral home Monday evening.

Mrs. Hazel Thompson Jaynes

Mrs. Hazel Thompson Jaynes, 90, of Morganton, died Friday, September 2, 2005 at the Shaire Center in Lenoir. She was born in Caldwell County on June 19, 1915 and was daughter of the late J.Fred Thompson and Kate Suddreth Thompson.

Mrs. Jaynes was a member of North Morganton United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the Wesleyan Service Guild. She had worked as a records clerk with the Burke County Health Department and retired from Lazarus where she was a store clerk.

She was preceded in death by her husband Forrest Jaynes, and sisters, Bessie T. Shepherd, Lucille T. Buff and Willie T. Clark.

She is survived by nephews, Robert J. Shepherd of Shelby, Doug Shepherd of Morganton and Donald Clark of McCall, Idaho; nieces, Peggy Hogan of Cramerton, NC, Judy Baker of Glen Alpine, Glenda Monroe of Salt Lake City, Utah and Martha Buff Welch of Randleman, NC. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews from her husband’s family.

Service’s will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, September, 6, 2005 at North Morganton United Methodist Church with Reverends Martha Buff Welch and Tony Matthews presiding. Interment will follow the service at Forest Hill Cemetery. There will be a gathering of family and friends 30 minutes prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to North Morganton United Methodist Church, 990 Sanford Drive, Morganton, NC 28655.

Mr. Craig Wilson Grigg

Mr. Craig Wilson Grigg, 89, of Amherst Road, Morganton died Sunday, March 23, 2003 at Grace Hospital. Born May 12, 1913 in Cleveland County he was the son of the late George Grigg and Johnnie Shufford Grigg. Brothers’ Ivey Grigg, Barney Grigg, Max Grigg, Ja Van Grigg; sisters Maude Shufford, Mamie Alwran and Bertha Crowder preceded him in death.

Mr. Grigg was a member of the Zion Memorial United Methodist Church in Morganton where he had been on the Cemetery Committee, member of the Church Choir and served on numerous committees. He had retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture and was a member of the Jr. Order.

Mr. Grigg is survived by: his wife Mary Hennesse Grigg of the home; sons Don Grigg and wife Ruth of Winston-Salem, Gary Grigg of Huntersville; daughter Teresa Grigg of the home; brothers Jesse Grigg of Birmingham Alabama, Ruffin Grigg of Bellwood, sisters Kathleen Wright of Rocky Mt., Madeline Parker of Shelby; grandchildren Robert Grigg, Kelly Grigg and Jody Grigg.

Funeral Services will be 3:00 PM Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at Zion Memorial United Methodist Church with the Reverend Beth Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 till 8:30 Tuesday at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

Mr. James “Jim” Edward Franklin

Mr. James “Jim” Edward Franklin, 79, of the Carl Freeman Avenue died, Tuesday, September 2, 2003 at Grace Hospital following an extended illness. Born February 17, 1924 in Burke County he was the eldest son of the late Preston A. Franklin and the late Eula Franklin Leonard and the stepson of the late Ben Leonard. Brothers Garland Franklin, Bobby Franklin, Jack Leonard and a sister Mindora Leonard Lutz preceded him in death.

Mr. Franklin was a US Navy Veteran of WW II serving aboard the LST 547, station in the Pacific. A charter member and past president of the Oak Hill Ruritan Club, he was an active volunteer in many community projects for over four decades. He was a past president of the Burke County Fair Association. In 1986 he retired from the Franklin and Ross Electrical Company.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years Hope Williams Franklin of the home; daughters Elaine Franklin of Charlotte, Carolyn Franklin Hilderbrand and husband Reed Hilderbrand of Charlotte; grandchildren Amy Hilderbrand of Bloomington Indiana, Kristin Hilderbrand of Atlanta Georgia, Brian Hilderbrand of Charlotte; brothers Ben M. Leonard, Roy Leonard, Charles Leonard, sisters Diane Leonard Wiberg, Rachel Franklin Watkins, Betty Leonard Lyle, Mable Leonard Walker, Evelyn Franklin Yohn and Mary Leonard Simpson.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, September 5, 2003 at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church with the Reverends David Gay and April Abernethy officiating . Burial will follow in the Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 till 8:30 Thursday at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton .

Memorials in Mr. Franklin’s memory may be made to the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, “ Capital Improvement Fund” 2239 NC Highway 181, Morganton NC 28655.

Mrs. Ernestine D. Lewis

Mrs. Ernestine D. Lewis of Marion died May 5, 2004 at The McDowell Hospital.

Born September 26 in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Alexander Daniels and Maude Watkins Daniels. She was a member of the Burkemont Baptist Church, Morganton. Mrs. Lewis, a real-estate broker, was the owner of Lewis Realty, Marion and former president of the McDowell County Board of Realtors and served as dean of education for the N.C. Board of Realtors. She also was a member of the Pilot Club and served on the Democratic Committee of McDowell County. She was an avid Braves fan.

Mrs. Lewis is survived by her husband, Bill Lewis of Marion; a daughter, Cindy Smathers (Mike) of Asheville; a granddaughter, Shannon Quinn of Marion; a tepdaughter, Lucille Powell of Asheville; two stepsons, Bill R. Lewis Jr. of Spruce Pine and Brian Lewis of Asheville; three brothers, Paul Daniels and family of Leon Daniels and family of Hampton, Va. and Frank Daniels and family of Marion; a sister, Virginia Scaglione of Baltimore, Md.; two stepgrandchildren, Brynne Smathers and Andreae Powell, both of Asheville.

Mr. Burton Baird Wallis

Mr. Burton Baird Wallis, 85, of Colonial Street S.W. in Valdese died Thursday, November 4, 2004 at Valdese General Hospital. Born March 9, 1919 in Dubuque Iowa he was the son of the late William Wallis and Helen Baird Wallis. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Virginia Wallis.

Mr. Wallis was an aluminums of the University of Chicago and was the plant manager of Sara Lee Bakery. He was very active in the Republican Party.

He is survived by:son Drake Wallis of Charlott Vermont; daughters Mary Lang of San Jose California and Dorothy Wallis of Lafayette Colorado; adopted daughter Abbie Baker of Valdese; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren .

A private memorial service will be held Saturday, November 13, 2004 in Newland NC.

Mr. Brian Wilson Shuffler

Mr. Brian Wilson Shuffler, 14, of Miller Place Long Island, New York died Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at Stony Brook Medical Center in Stony Brook, Long Island, New York from injuries sustained in an accident. Born November 2, 1988 in Burke County he was the loving son of Loy “L.G.” Glen Shuffler of Morganton and Sharon Biviano Southwick of Miller Place, Long Island, New York.

Mr. Brian was in the 9th grade at Miller Place High School and was a member of the Miller Place High School football team. When he was home visiting he loved to attend Zion Baptist Church in Morganton.

In addition to his parents he is survived by: brother Justin Loy Shuffler of Conover; step-brothers Brandon Southwick and Adam Southwick of Miller Place; paternal grand parents Ervin and Durlene Shuffler of Morganton; paternal great grandmother Clara Clontz of Morganton; Maternal Grandmother Judy Biviano of Bayshore, Long Island aunt and uncle Gwen and James Hood of Conover. Many other loving family and friends in both North Carolina and New York also survives Brian.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, March 30, 2003 at Zion Baptist Church with the Reverend Doctor Ralph May officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2 till 3 PM Sunday at Zion Baptist Church.

A Funeral Mass was held March 21, 2003 at St. Louis de Montford Roman Catholic Church in Sound Beach, Long Island. Burial followed at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Memorials in Mr. Shuffler’s memory may be made to the Zion Baptist Church, 3396 Pea Ridge Road, Morganton NC 28655.

Mr. Samuel Wesley Powell

Mr. Samuel Wesley Powell, 81, of Morganton, died Wednesday at Grace Hospital following a brief illness. He was born October 2, 1921 in Burke County and was son of the late W.F. Powell and Ollie Clontz Powell.

He was retired from the hosiery industry.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Clyde Powell and sisters, Eula Harris, Beulah Evans, Margaret Whetstine and Ruth Whisenant.

He is survived by his brother, Clarence H. Powell of Morganton; sisters, Iva Wiseman and Betty P.Walker both of Morganton and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at Kirksey Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Jerry Gamble officiating. Interment will follow the service at Burke

Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00 PM.
