Mrs. Frances M. Griffin, 88, of Hunterwood Nursing Home, died May 26, 2001. The funeral will be 1 p.m. May 30, 2001 at Gethsemane Baptist Church, Dr. Carver Rd., Charlotte, with the Rev. Glen Gerald III officiating. Burial will be in Bethel AME Zion Church in Catawba, SC. Visitation will be from 11-1 p.m. May 30, 2001 at Gethsemane Baptist Church.
Born December 2, 1912 in Catawba, SC, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Channie Walker. She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church for over 55 years. She was a virtuous woman and a mother to those she met. She was a great intercessor, praying on behalf of others. She loved working in her flower garden and fishing. She was a homemaker.
Survivors are sons, Eddie L. Griffin, William Taft Griffin both of Charlotte, NC; daughters, Mamie Loretta Neely, of Catawba, SC, Tina Twitty of Boston, MA, Carrie Kennedy and Dorothy Kizzie both of Charlotte, NC; 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren.

Deese, Robert Layne
Mr. Robert Layne Deese, 55, of Charlotte died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center after a two year courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Idlewild Baptist Church with Pastor Keith Widner officiating. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. His family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Tuesday preceding the service at the church.
Mr. Deese was born June 18, 1945 in Charlotte to Myrtle Deese and the late Layne Deese. He served his country as a Marine and was a loving and devoted husband and father. Robert loved sports, racing, helping others, and his grandchildren.
His survivors include in addition to his mother, his wife, Virginia Deese of Charlotte, his son, Bobby Layne Deese and wife April of Hendersonville, his step-daughters, Anela McCrorey and husband Robert of Stallings, Camilla Stutts of Charlotte, his brothers, John Deese of Roanoke, VA, and Michael Deese of Midland, and by his beloved grandchildren, Emma Layne Deese and Kristen Deese, Jessica and Ashley McCrorey.

LINCOLNTON -- Mrs. Pearl Cherry Beam, 97, of 203 Labans Lane, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at her home. Her funeral will be 2pm Thursday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carroll Lindsey and Rev. Harold Leatherman officiating. Burial will follow in Unity Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Beam was born in Lincoln County and was the daughter of the late James Ivey and Daisy Nickson Cherry. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John W. Beam. Mrs. Beam was a homemaker.
Survivors are one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Philip Graham of Lincolnton; one granddaughter, Angela Graham and one step-grandson, Gerry Graham.

Cobb, Frederick Ambrose
LAURINBURG -- Mr. Frederick Ambrose Cobb, 88, of Scotia Village, Lauringburg, N.C. and formerly of Lumber Bridge, N.C. died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg.
Mr. Cobb was a son of the late William Stephen Cobb and Martha Harper Cobb. He was a native of Robeson County and a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Margaret McDuffie Cobb.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Sunday in Rex Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Mr. Cobb is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Jean Lewis and Mrs. Martha Ellinger and her husband, Dr. Harley Ellinger, all of Charlotte, N.C. and Mrs. Freda Behm of Grayslake, Illinois; five grandchildren, Amanda, Anna and Andrea Behm of Grayslake, Illinois, Charles Ellinger of Longmont, Colorado and Laura Ellinger Scheid and her husband Michael of Arlington, Virginia.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Saturday, May 26, 2001 at McNeill Funeral Home in St. Pauls, N.C.
Stowe, Clyde Dalton
DALLAS -- Mr. Clyde Dalton Stowe, Jr., 82, of 110 Robinson Clemmer Road, died May 28, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Stowe was a native of Gaston County, the son of the late Clyde D. and Essie Mendehall Stowe, Sr. He was a retired Postmaster at Dallas and was a lifelong member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church, Dallas, where he served on the church council and was secretary for the church council for many years.
Mr. Stowe was a veteran of the US Army, having served in World War II and Korea. he was a member of The Last Man Club of Gastonia, member of American Legion Post 23, Gastonia, Lions Club of Dallas, Redman of the World, Dallas Masonic Lodge #263 AF&AM;, member of the Gaston County Historical Society, was town historian for Dallas, and had served on the zoning board in Dallas. He was also a staff reporter for the Gaston Gazette for many years reporting for the town of Dallas.
Mr. Stowe is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth McAllister Stowe, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon S. Davis and her husband Ronald, and Emily S. Crisp and her husband Olin, both of Dallas; brother, Alva Stowe of Gastonia; sisters Hilda Queen and Becky Cherry, both of Dallas, and Thelma Scrum of Kings Mountain; grandchildren Lisa Barber, Alexis and Kelly Byrd of Gastonia, Gary Davis and Beau Davis of Dallas, Leslie Miller of Gastonia, Sarah, Jennifer and Amy Crisp of Dallas; and five great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 31, at Holy Communion Lutheran Church at 3 PM with Reverend Paul Kanupp officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Dallas Funeral Home, Wednesday evening from 7-9 PM. Military and Masonic rites will be held at the graveside. At other times the family will be at the home of his daughter, Sharon Davis, 2601 Elmwood Circle, Dallas, NC.
Active pallbearers will be Mike Stowe, Kenny Click, Boyce Byrd, Jay Baker, Graham Gordon and Alfred Hoffman. Honorary Pallbearers will be Retired Postmasters.

MONROE -- Mr. Odell V. Rape, 75, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. Odell was born June 28, 1925 in Union County, son of the late Dewitt and Willie Mae Arant Rape. He was a retired building contractor. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with Rev. John Culbreth officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. Mr. Rape was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Betty Jo Thomas Rape, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Sneed. Survivors include one son: Mike Rape and wife Teressa of Marshville, NC, one daughter, Mrs. Crystal Brantley and husband Barry of Monroe, NC, four grandchildren, BIlly Michael Rape Jr., Gretchen Autumn Rape, Matthew Thomas Brantley, Andrew Carol Brantley, three brothers Winfred Rape, Millon `Bush' Rape both of Monroe, NC, Olin Rape of Myrtle Beach, SC, two sisters: Vera Tarlton of Lake Norman, NC, Doris McGee of Monroe, NC, Memorials may be made to the Crippled Childrens Shriners Hospital, Greenville, SC. Heywood, Marvin Emanuel
Marvin Emanuel Heywood, Sr., 69, of Charlotte, died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at his home from complications due to diabetes.
Born June 23, 1931 in Gibson, NC, Mr. Heywood was the eldest son of the late Marvin Chesley Haywood and Edith Gibson Haywood. He was a veteran, having served with the 8th Army in Korea. He had a career in sales and was owner of Heywood Sewing Center for the past 38 years. Mr. Heywood was a member of the Church of the Open Door.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 29 at the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington funeral service, 5301 Albemarle Road, with Rev. Fleet Kirkpatrick, Jr. and Rev. Eugene Hales officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Road. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Eleanor Hamrick Heywood; a son, Marvin E. Heywood, Jr. and his wife, Brenda; a daughter, Susan Heywood Turnberg and her husband, Stephen; and two granddaughters, Sarina Turnberg and Bethany Turnberg, all of Charlotte; a sister, Edith Lineberger and her husband, Bill of Mint Hill; and three brothers, Luther Garland Haywood and his wife, Carol of Mint Hill, and Jimmy Pate Haywood and Billy Chesley Haywood, both of Charlotte.

LINCOLNTON -- Mrs. Ethel Irene Fortenberry Walker, 82, of 1807 Hwy 182, Lincolnton, died Sunday. Her funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist CHurch in Lincolnton with Dr. J. Dixon Free officiating. Her body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in Wilkies Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Burke County. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Monday at Warlick Funeral Home.
Mrs. Walker was born in Burke County and was the daughter of the late Clem and Nora Bradshaw Fortenberry. She was a homemaker.
Survivors are her husband, Joseph P. Walker of the home; two sons, Larry Eugene Walker and wife, Colette of Bessemer City and Arnold Marshall Walker and wife, Darcel of Gastonia; one daughter, Nancy Carolyn Walker of Huntersville; two brothers, Jessie Fortenberry of Hickory and Johnny Fortenberry of Hickory; one sister, Minnie Lowman Lail of Hickory; three grandchildren.

KINGS MOUNTAIN -- Eloise Early Baity, 89, resident of 915 Brookwood Drive, died Monday, May 28, 2001 at Wendover Hospice, Shelby, NC. She was a native of Cleveland County, NC and daughter of the late Boyce Crayton Early and Willie Morris Early. She was wife of the late Arthur Pinkney Baity, Sr. She was also preceded in death by son Arthur P. Baity, Jr. and brothers, Jake Early and Cran Early and sisters, Minnie Early Murray, Mary Early Ware, and Catherine Early. She was a member of the Gastonia Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, David J. Baity and wife, Barbara of Gastonia; daughters, Valerie Baity Coleman and husband, Don of Demorest, GA, Linda Baity Bennett of Kings Mountain, and Deborah Baity West of Charlotte, NC; sister-in-law Jo Ann C. Baity of Kings Mountain; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild.
Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 3001 with Don Coleman officiating. The family will visit with friends from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon prior to the service at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain. Interment will be at Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, NC.
