Hinson, Christopher Dean
LANCASTER -- Christopher Dean Hinson, age 11, of 1313 Cedar Pine Lake Road, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 as a result of an accidental drowning in Kershaw County. He was born October 14, 1989 in Lancaster County, the son of the late Mr. Eddie Dean Hinson and Mrs. Julia Barton Hinson. Christopher was a student at Brooklyn Springs Elementary School and of the Baptist Faith.
Christopher is survived by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Jean Thompson of the home, 1 sister, Andrea Leigh Rollings of the home, 4 uncles Mr. Greg Barton of the home, Mr. Tim Barton of Lancaster, Mr. Paul Hinson of Rock Hill, and Mr. William Hinson of Columbia, 2 aunts, Mrs. Gail Hinson of Lancaster and Mrs. Tina Black of Indian Land.
The funeral service for Christopher will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday afternoon, May 29, 2001 at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Fowlkes, Robert Richard
Mr. Robert Richard Fowlkes, 71, of Charlotte and formerly of Fort Mill, SC, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at White Oak Manor.
Born March 11, 1930 in Chester, SC, Mr. Fowlkes was a son of the late Harry Benjamin Fowlkes and Mary Allen Fowlkes. He retired after a 21-year career in the military, having served in the US Navy during World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam.
Mr. Fowlkes is survived by his daughter, Mary Fowlkes Joyner, her husband, Robert F. Joyner, and their son, Robert William Joyner, all of Charlotte.
He is also survived by his sister, Ila Fowlkes Walker of Charlotte; Mrs. Walker's sons, Floyd G. Walker and his wife, Joanne, of Charlotte, and Norman L. Walker and his wife, Sally, of Mint Hill; as well as Mrs. Walker's grandchildren, Cindy Walker of Cornelius and Julie Walker of Charlotte.
His wife, Anna T. Fowlkes, preceded him in death.
A funeral service with military honors will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, May 30, from the graveside in Oaklawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 PM Tuesday, May 29, at Hankins and Whittington Dilworth Chapel.

PINEHURST -- Marjorie Powledge Burton, 88, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 at her residence.
Memorial services will be 3 PM Thursday, May 31, at Powell Funeral Home, Southern Pines. Reverend Valerie Coe Lowder will officiate.
Mrs. Burton was a member of the Congregational Church of Pinehurst.
She is survived by her son, William Burton, III of Conyers, GA; daughter, Barbara Head of Rochester, MI; sister, Mildred Porter of Macon, GA; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Carr, William Robert
CHESTER -- Mr. William Robert Carr, 69, of 3344 Mt. Prospect Road, died Saturday, May 27, 2001 at his residence. He was born in Gaston County on December 30, 1931, son of the late Guy Carr and the late Ada Hill Carr. He attended school in York County, SC, was a member of Bright Light Independent Freewill Baptist Church and was retired from Springs Industries.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm Tuesday at Barron Funeral Chapel with interment in Armenia United Methodist Church Cemetery. Rev. Phil Haynes will officiate.
Surviving are his wife, Lois Canupp Carr; daughters, Debbie Melton of Chester, SC and Neely Darline Parkins of Sumter, SC; son, Darrell Parkins of Clinton, SC; sisters, Garnell Ramsey, Elzie Lanier and Annie Mae Clark, all of York, SC; brothers, James Carr of York and George Carr of Hickory Grove, SC; 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Morrison, Christopher
BUCHANAN, TN -- Christopher Morrison, 27, died Friday, May 25, 2001 in Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, North Carolina, from injuries received in an automobile accident on May 18. He was a Boatswain's Mate 2 in the U.S. Coast Guard stationed at Paris Landing, Tennessee.
He was born November 19, 1973 in Parkersburg, a son of Johnny Morrison and of Diana McKinney Morrison. He was a graduate of Marietta Christian School and had attended West Virginia University for three years before enlisting in the Coast Guard.
On November 9, 1996, he married Shila Michelle Sturm who survives with their daughter, Kamryn Nicole Morrison. He is also survived by his father of Mineral Wells and his mother of Williamstown; his grandparents, Charles and Ruth Morrison of Parkersburg and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Stephen and Sheila Sturm Murphy of Marietta. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Shawna Sturm and Sherisha Sturm; his brother-in-law, Brandon Sturm; and his father-in-law, Robert Sturm; and his aunt, Missie Rawlins of Williamstown. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Walter and Betty McKinney.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Williamstown Church of Christ on Ninth Street with Chaplain McGlothlin of the U.S. Coast Guard officiating. Interment will be in the East Lawn Memorial Park with military rites. Friends may call at the McClure-Schafer Funeral Home on Wednesday afternoon and evening and at the church for one hour prior to the services on Thursday. The family will be present to meet friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
Austin, George Willis
George Willis Austin, age 65, of Mooresville, formerly of Charlotte, died Sunday, May 27, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center of chronic leukemia. Graveside service will be 12:00 noon, Wednesday at Sharon Memorial Park. A memorial celebration will follow at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Page officiating. Those attending are invited to a reception in the fellowship hall of the Church following the service. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of The Tom Bowers Sunday School Class, The Laird Lewis Sunday School Class, and the Campbell Food Service Associates. Active pallbearers will be Bill Bailey, Steve Bunker, Phil Gamble, Bill House, Bob Lindsay, Tom Bowers, Walt Coker, and Joe Caudell.
George was born March 15, 1936 in Smithfield, North Carolina, a son of Lucile McLemore Austin and the late William Joseph Austin. He grew up in Smithfield where he was an all-county basketball player for Smithfield High School in Johnston County. He was also a prominent member of the Choral music program at his high school.
George worked for Campbell Soup Company for thirty-eight years and received the honor of induction into the Campbell Food Service Hall of Fame. He graduated from Wake Forest University where he played basketball and received degrees in history and English. A member of Charlotte's First Baptist Church, George had been active in the choir, a frequent soloist and an ordained deacon. Prior to moving to Charlotte he was active in the Asheville Community Theater. He also had been a member of Opera Charlotte and The Lifestyle Singers.
George was a multi-talented, multi-faceted individual who loved everyone and was known for his warmth, his talent, and his puns. He could get on a bus full of strangers and have them all singing and laughing in no time at all. He loved crossword puzzles and playing bridge. He will be remembered by many who past him jogging on Albemarle Road or on the streets of Mooresville.
In addition to his mother, George is survived by his wife, Emory Earp Austin, two sons, George Willis (Billy) Austin, Jr. and his wife, Debra Sue of Charlotte, and Joseph Burnford Austin and his wife, Amy Robillard of Wake Forest, NC; a daughter, Beth Austin Phillips and her husband Larry of Charlotte; a sister, Margaret LeMaster and her husband, Leonard of Tucson, Arizona; a brother, William Joseph Austin Jr. and his wife, Gail Russell of New Bern, NC; grandchildren, Mikaela Erika Austin, Sarah Anne Austin, Gary Jennings Phillips and William Joseph Austin III; and several nieces and nephews.

Edwards, John Graham
Dr. John Graham Edwards, 62, of Charlotte, NC, died suddenly on Thursday, May 24, 2001, in Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Dr. Edwards was born on April 9, 1939, (Easter Sunday), in Philadelphia, PA, a son of the late John E. Edwards and Gertrude Graham Edwards. He was raised in Lincolnton, NC and became an Eagle Scout at the young age of 14. While attending Dartmouth College, Dr. Edwards earned accolades as captain of the swim team, quarterback of the football team, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. After receiving a Doctorate Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, he served in the Vietnam War as an oral-facial surgeon and was awarded a US Army Commendation Medal. After completing his tour of duty, he returned to North Carolina to complete a Masters of Science in anatomy, and a residency in orthodontic dentofacial orthopedics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Edwards brought his family to Charlotte where he practiced orthodontics for the next twenty-five years and published landmark research in prominent orthodontic and maxillofacial journals. In addition to being a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and Dentofacial orthopedics, Dr. Edwards was a Referee Editor of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (1971-1998), and Honorary Member of the College of European Orthodontists. As an Instructor at the residency program at the unversity of Nort Carolina, Dr. Edwards was in demand for clinical lectures and presentations throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico. Above all his academic successes and contributions to the field of dentistry, he derived profound satisfaction in his work by helping his patients improve their quality of life.
After retirement, Dr. Edwards volunteered his time and talents to the Shelter Dental Clinic for the Homeless. He actively supported charitable organizations which benefited the Charlotte community and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where he was a member.
Dr. Edwards is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marilyn G. Edwards; his children, John W. Edwards, of Myrtle Beach, SC, Terri E. Sanz, and her husband, Edward Sanz, of Charlotte, NC and Scott G. Edwards, and his wife Eve Edwards, of Memphis, TN; three grandchildren, Alex Sanz, Nicole Sanz, and Ariana Edwards; his brother, James E. Edwards, of Boulder, CO; and his sister, Joan E. Officer, of Summit, NJ.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6828 Old Reid Road, Charlotte, NC, with The Reverend Monsignor William Pharr officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carolina Foundation for Oral Health, 1112 Harding Place, Charlotte, NC 28204, to benefit the Shelter Homeless Dental Clinic.

Belton, Ms. Ovalene Stroud
DENVER -- Ms. Ovalene Stroud Belton, 68, went to be with the Lord on May 29, 2001 after a long battle with cancer.
Her funeral will be 4 PM Thursday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Karen Moore officiating. A private graveside service will be held on Friday. The family will receive friends from 3-4 PM Thursday prior to the service at Warlick Funeral Home.
Ms. Belton was born on August 9, 1932 in Mecklenburg County to the late Robert and Minnie Whetstone Stroud. She was a provider, homemaker and worked in computer assembly. Mrs. Belton was a loving sister, mother and grandmother and will be most remembered for her strong will and determination.
Survivors include three sons, Bobby Belton of Huntersville, Trent Belton of Denver, NC, and Norman Belton and his wife Jennifer of Concord; one daughter, Ms. Camille Belton of Charlotte; two brothers, Charles `Kenneth` Stroud and R. L. `Jack` Stroud, both of Charlotte; one sister, Lillie Ruth Farrar of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Cole Belton, Madison Belton and Joseph and Chelsey Dickens.

Buza, Robert Gerald
Mr. Robert Gerald Buza, age 57 of Charlotte, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews. A funeral mass to celebrate the life of Mr. Buza will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church with Father Matthew Leonard officiating. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. A Prayer Service will be at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road with the visitation to follow until 9:00 p.m.
Mr. Buza was born April 22, 1944 in Cleveland, Ohio, son of the late Joseph and Stella Huff Buza. He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, was a graduate of Cathedral Latin High School in Cleveland, Ohio, graduated Cum Laude from Ohio State University with a degree in Comprehensive Science, was associated with Barnette International as Vice President, was a member of Raintree Country Club where he had served as President of Men's Golf Association, and a member of the Board of Directors.
Surviving are his wife, Beatrice Kubas Buza; daughter, Lisa Jean Buza of Charlotte; grandson, Braxton Tyler Pandiani of Charlotte; and a sister, Patricia Sfiligoj of Cleveland, Ohio.

Thomas, Rosa Riese
FORT MILL -- Mrs. Rosa Riese Thomas, 67, of 202 Pine Street, passed away Monday, May 14, 2001 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC. A daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Riese, Mrs. Thomas was born May 10, 1934 in Tiefenthal, Germany. Mrs. Thomas was a homemaker who loved her family. She was a member of Sisk Memorial Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2001 at Unity Cemetery with Rev. Don Daves officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
