KINGS MOUNTAIN -- Mary Pearl Robinson Bumgardner, 85, of 716 Sipes Street, died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at WHite Oak Manor. She was born in Gaston County, NC on December 10, 1915, daughter of the late Ellis Swain and Mary O. Lineberger Robinson. She was a member of Pisgah ARP Church, Gastonia.
Funeral services will be Sunday, 3:30pm at Pisgah ARP Church with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Richard Lewis and Rev. Larry W. Monday will officiate. Pallbearers will be John Dellinger, Kenneth Dellinger, Randy Moss, Ed Robinson, George Rogers, Jr., Richard Snyder, John Thornburg and Kenneth Watson. Honorary pallbearers will be David Crawford and Charles Medlin. The family will receive friends at Greene funeral service, Westside Chapel on Saturday from 7:30-9pm.
Surviving are her husband, William Ray Bumgardner of Kinds Mountain; son and daughter-in-law, William Ray Jr. and Lyn Bumgardner of Anderson, SC; daughters, Mary A. Dellinger of Bessemer City, Sara Hutchins of Gastonia; brothers, Harold Robinson of Charlotte and Charles Robinson of Gastonia; sisters, Lucille Ratchford of Stanley, Eula Rhyne of Gastonia and Beulah Robinson of Gastonia; 11 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Aside from her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Franklin, Grady, Raymond, Leonard and Robert Robinson.

Benton, Delane H.
Delane H. Benton, 84, formerly of Charlotte and a resident of Cincinnati, OH for the last seven years, died Monday, May 21, 2001. She was a resident of The New England Club Retirement Community in Anderson Township at the time of her death.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 26 in the McEwen Funeral Home Chapel, 727 Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC. Interment immediately follows at Sharon Memorial Park. Mrs. Benton was born April 2, 1917 in Union County, NC, the daughter of the late Tracy O. and Flossie McCorkle Helms. She lived most of her life in Charlotte, NC and moved to Cincinnati in 1993 to be near family. She was married for 56 years to the late Jesse W. Benton of Charlotte and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was retired from her business of cosmetology where she serviced many clients in the Charlotte area.
Mrs. Benton is survived by daughters, Sue Ann Kovec and her husband, Robert of Bellingham, WA, Deane Godfrey and her husband, Dwaine of Cincinnati, OH; brother, John H.P. Helms of Merritt Island, FL; sisters, Gayle Hancock of Atlanta, GA, Barbara Brantley of Marshville, NC, and Crowellene Britt of Thousand Oaks, CA; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was a beautiful spirit that will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Contributions may be sent to a charity of the donor's choice.

Edwards, John Graham
Dr. John Graham Edwards, 62, of Charlotte, NC, died suddenly on Thursday, May 24, 2001, in Isle of Palms, South Carolina. Dr. Edwards was born on April 9, 1939, in Philadelphia, PA, a son of the late John E. Edwards and Gertrude Graham Edwards.
While attending Dartmouth College, Dr. Edwards earned accalades as captain of the swim team, quarterback of the football team, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. After receiving a Doctorate Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Denistry, he enlisted in the United States Army Medical Corp. and was decorated for his service in Viet Nam. After completing his tour of duty, he returned to North Carolina to complete his residency in orthodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Edwards brought his family to Charlotte where he practiced orthodontics for the next twenty-five years and published landmark research in prominent dental journals. He found satisfaction in his work by helping his patients improve their quality of life.
After retirement, Dr. Edwards volunteered his time and talents to the Shelter Homeless Dental Clinic. He actively supported charitable organizations which benefited the CHarlotte community ad St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where he was a member.
Dr. Edwards is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marilyn G. Edwards; his children, John W. Edwards, of Myrtle Beach, SC, Terri E. Sanz, and her husband, Edwards Sanz, of Charlotte, NC and Scott G. Edwards, and his wife Eve Edwards, of Memphis, TN; three grandchildren, Alex Sanz, Nichole Sanz, and Ariana Edwards; his brother, James E. Edwards, of Denver, CO; and his sister, Jon E. Officer, of Sumit, NJ.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6828 Old Reid Road, Charlotte, NC, with The Reverend Monsignor William Pharr officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carolina Foundation for Oral Health, 1112 Harding Place, Charlotte, NC 28204, to benefit the Shelter Homeless Dental Clinic.

LANCASTER -- Mr. Woodrow Wilson Carnes, age 83, of 5151 Woodrow Carnes Road died Friday morning, May 25, 2001 at White Oak Manor in Lancaster. He was born April 9, 1918 in Kershaw County, the son of the late Mr. Simon M. Carnes and Mrs. Odelia Sims Carnes and was the husband of Mrs. Euree McManus Carnes. Mr. Carnes was a retired truck driver for Gulf Oil Company, a Mason with Wannamaker Masonic Lodge #329, a York and Scottish Rite, a Shriner with Hejaz Temple where he had served as a District Deputy of Shriners, a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and served our great country in the United States Army during World War II.
Mr. Carnes is survived by his wife, Mrs. Euree McManus Carnes of the home, 1 son, Rev. Mickey W. Carnes and his wife Jinx of Waxhaw, NC, 2 daughters, Mrs. Waymon (DeeDee) Newton and Miss Trudy D. Carnes both of Lancaster, 1 brother, Mr. Joe Carnes of Lancaster, 1 sister, Mrs. Lorene Carnes McManus of Lancaster, 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
The funeral service for Mr. Carnes will be 3:00 pm Sunday afternoon, May 27, 2001 at Bethlehem Baptist Church by Rev. Donald Coppedge and Dr. Harold Owens burial will follow with Masonic Rites at Lancaster Memorial Park.

VALE -- Mr. James Zeno Martin, 91, of Lincoln Nursing Center and formerly of Vale, NC, died Thursday, May 24, 2001. His funeral service will be 2pm Sunday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Marcus Redding and Rev. Harvey Gates officiating. Burial will follow in Hull's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30pm Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Martin was born on October 1, 1901 in Lincoln County. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Eliza Leatherman Martin and wife Lola M. Strange. Mr. Martin worked for Hickory Springs.
Survivors include five sons, Jim Martin, Rev. Clyde Martin, J.W. Martin, all of Lincolnton, Harold Dean Martin of Vale, and James Calvin Martin of Claremont, NC; two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Annis of Vale and Miss Margaret Martin of Lincolnton, NC; one sister, Mrs. Jane Kinley of Gastonia, NC; 16 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Mr. Glenn Jenkins, Jr., 60, of Charlotte, died Friday, May 25, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center. The funeral will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at McEwen funeral service, Charlotte Chapel. Glenn Jenkins was born December 12, 1940 in Swain County, NC, son of the late William and Eliza Jane McLean Jenkins. Glenn attended church at New Grace Baptist Church in Iron Station. He was the owner of Precision Mechanical Co. for over 30 years. Glenn was always helpful and caring to anybody in need. His grandchildren were the lights of his life.
Mr. Jenkins is survived by his daughter, Michelle Lanier and Ted Faulkner of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Brittni, Samantha, and Tiffany; three brothers, Elmer, Tom, and Jerry; one sister, Mary; six nieces; and four nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia T. Jenkins in 1999.

Proctor, William Stowe
ASHEVILLE -- William Stowe Proctor, `Bill', 78, of Elkdale Drive, Asheville, died Saturday, May 26, 2001 in his home after a short battle with a brain tumor. A native of Lincoln County, he was born July 20, 1922. He was the son of the late Beverly H. Proctor and Maggie Lackey Proctor, both of Lincoln County.
Bill served in the US Army for four years and fought in World War II. He retired after 40 yeas as Vice President of Bon Marche and Myers Arnold department stores. After retiring Bill went to work for Leonard and Biggers Law firm where he has worked for the past 10 years. He was Past President of WNC Credit Union, member of Charlotte Sales Executives, Past President of Westgate Merchant Association, member of Sertoma Club, and served on the Town of Woodfin Zoning Board. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of Asheville where he was a former Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent of married Young People.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Leon Houser and brothers, Frank and James Proctor. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Elizabeth `Tissie' Barnes Proctor; son, Michael Proctor and his wife Becky of Charlotte; daughter, Pamela Proctor Mease of the home; grandson, Keith Proctor and his wife, Tammy of Charlotte; two granddaughters, Olivia Linkle and her husband Scott of Concord, and Wendy Elizabeth Mease also of the home; three sisters, Stella Lingerfelt, Nell Baxter both o Cherryville, and Cecil Norman of Vale, NC; five brothers, Ken, Nelson, Dewight, and John Proctor all of Hickory, and Beverly Proctor of Morganton; and several nieces and nephews.
At the request of Mr. Proctor, services will be private. Please take the time you would have spent with the Proctor family and honor Bill's memory by spending time with your own family, loving them as he loved his family. Sherbert, Thelma Mae Watkins
GASTONIA -- Thelma Mae Watkins Sherbert, 81, of 78 Crescent Avenue, Ranlo, died Thursday, May 24, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of Cherokee County, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Pearl Conkle Watkins. She was wife of the late Marvin Sherbert. Mrs. Sherbert worked for Wix Corporation for 27 years and was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include her daughters, Jane Ramsey of the home and Linda Ann Smith of Bessemer City; sons, Charles H. Watkins of McAdenville and Donald Ray Sherbert of Gastonia; 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Joe Sherbert and her brothers, James William Watkins and Robert L. Watkins.
A funeral service will be held at 2pm Sunday, May 27, 2001 at McLean Funeral Directors, Founders Chapel. Rev. Leroy Eastler will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Tim Patterson, Elvis Anderson, Scott Rudisill, Dan Martin, Doug Calhoun and Jerry Anderson. Interment will follow in Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight (Saturday) from 7-8:30pm at the funeral home.
