Woody, Roy Lee

LINCOLNTON -- Mr. Roy Lee Woody, 75, of Startown Road, died Thursday, May 3, 2001.

His funeral service will be 2 pm Sunday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Dixon Free and Reverend Phillip Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm Saturday at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mr. Woody was born on June 11, 1925 in Madison County, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, John S. and Vaughty Reynolds Woody.

Survivors include his wife, Opaline Woody of the home; three daughters, Gwen Wright and Terri Eddinger, both of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Rhonda Justice of Maiden, NC; two sons, Michael Woody from Adrian, MI, and Wendell Woody of Temperance, MI; three sisters, Dorothy Green of Clyde, NC, Willma Harper of Rutherford, NC, and Sue Smathers of Canton, NC; one brother, Troy Woody of Ottawa Lake, MI; as well as eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 201 Robin Road, Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Warlick Funeral Home of Lincolnton is in charge of arrangements.

Lookabill, Mabel Parks

LEXINGTON -- Mrs. Mabel Parks Lookabill, 79, died May 3, 2001. Funeral is 11 am today at Bethany United Methodist Church, interment to follow in the church cemetery. Davidson Funeral Home of Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

Connolly, Eileen Anne

HARRISBURG -- Eileen Anne Connolly, 40, died Monday, April 23, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Port Jefferson, NY on April 28. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 3pm, Sunday, May 6, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1400 Suther Rd., Charlotte, NC. Reception to follow at the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for Rince Na H'eireann School of Irish Dance, The Eileen Connolly Perpetual Trophy, checks payable to Cathleen A. Scarpa, 7810 Flourtown Ave., Wyndmoor, PA 19038.

Withers, Betty P.

Mrs. Betty P. Withers, 58, of Carlyle Drive, Charlotte, died May 3, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

funeral service is 2 pm Sunday, May 6, 2001 at Steele Creek AME Zion Church, with Reverend Charles Reid officiating. Interment will be n the church cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, at the church.

Mrs. Withers was born in Mecklenburg County, and was a member of Steel Creek AME Zion Church. She was a homemaker, but also served on the Usher Board of Steel Creek Church, sang with the Gospel Choir, and was a member of the Missionary Board Golden Years Club. She graduated from Sterling High School of Charlotte.

Mrs. Withers is survived by two sons, John Withers and Darrell Withers (Terri); three daughters, Mrs. Deborah Little (David), Ms. Anna Withers and Ms. Teresa Withers; her mother, Mrs. Lille Mobley; four sisters, Ms. Dorothy Phifer, Mrs. Margaret Smith (Jerome), Mrs. Carolyn Osborne (Daryle) and Ms. Melanie Mobley; two brothers, Mr. John Phifer and Mr. David Phifer (Burke); as well as 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, all of Charlotte.

Grier funeral service of Charlotte is handling arrangements for the family of Mrs. Withers.

Powell, Ada Dellinger-Keever

LINCOLNTON -- Mrs. Ada Dellinger-Keever Powell, 85, of the Brian Center in Lincolnton died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Lincoln Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Hollybrook Cemetery with Rev. Harold Leatherman officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service at the cemetery.

Mrs. Powell was born on April 9, 1916 in Lincoln County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nasby and Lola Harvison Dellinger; and her husband, Ray Powell. Mrs. Powell worked in the textile industry.

Survivors include one son, Steven Turner of Athens, TN; one daughter, Dorothy Keever of Denver; three grandchildren; and special niece, Patsy Mills of South Carolina.

Warlick Funeral Home, Lincolnton is in charge.

Lockman, Shirley Elizabeth

Shirley Elizabeth Lockman, 71, of Scottsdale, AZ, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001. Born on February 19, 1930 in Charlotte, NC, Mrs. Lockman moved to Arizona 30 years ago from Charlotte. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Carroll; daughters, Linda Lockman of Phoenix, AZ, Cheryl Lockman of Scottsdale, AZ, Kay Neal of Phoenix, AZ, and Nancy Lockman of Scottsdale, AZ; sons, Robert and David, both of Scottsdale, AZ; brother, Charles Conner of Scottsdale, AZ; and grandchild, Joanie.

Private services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 11 Forest Street, New Canaan, CT 06840.

Rhyne, Lawrence William

YORK -- Mr. Lawrence William Rhyne, Sr., 71, of Lincoln Road, died May 3,2001.

Born November 7, 1929 in Gaston County, Mr. Rhyne was a son of the late Leonard Oscar Rhyne and the late Alice Eldora Beaty Rhyne. Mr. Rhyne was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War and a retired employee of York county.

Mr. Rhyne is survived by his wife, Martha Elizabeth Adams Rhyne of the home; a daughter, Susan Alice Pursley and her husband and Steve of York; a son, Lawrence W. Rhyne Jr. and his wife Margaret of Clover; grandchildren Jennifer M. Pursley and S. Kyle Pursley of York, and Anna E. Rhyne of Clover; one brother, Samuel A. Rhyne of Clover; and three sisters, Mary Jane McCarter and Bonnie Sanford, both of Clover, and Elizabeth Barnes of Gastonia.

funeral service will be 3 pm Sunday, May 6, 2001 at Saint Paul Untied Methodist Church, conducted by the Reverend David Inman. Interment will be in Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7-9 pm this evening at M. L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home of clover. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1550 St. Paul Church Road, Clover, SC 29710.

M. L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home of Clover is in charge of arrangements for the family of Mr. Rhyne.

Abraham, Rosa Lee

Mrs. Rosa Lee Abraham, 72, of 3901 Tillman Road, Charlotte, NC, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, May 6, 2001 at 3:30 PM at Zechariah Alexander, Sr. Memorial Chapel with Elder J.A. Deas officiating. Burial will be in York Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 3:30 PM, prior to the service.

Mrs. Abraham was a native of Edgefield, SC. Survivors include four sons; three daughters; one brother; two sisters; fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Alexander Funeral is serving the Abraham family.

Stacy, Maude Elizabeth

SHELBY -- Mrs. Maude Elizabeth Stacy, 90, of 1425 E. Marion St. died May 3, 2001.

Funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday at Friendship United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery. Visitation is 10:30-11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Stacy was born in Randolph County. She was a retired medical secretary and a member of Friendship United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher in the children's department.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. L.E. Stacy and Sally Nolan Stacy; and a brother, Paul J. Stacy.

Memorials may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, PO Box 219, Fallston, NC 28042.

Greene, Mamie Haigler

ELLERBE -- Mrs. Mamie Haigler Greene, 105, a resident of Britthaven of Hamlet and a former resident of Ellerbe, died Thursday, May 3, 2001 at Britthaven.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Saturday from the Carter Funeral Home Ellerbe Chapel with Rev. Timothy Hendrick, Rev. Michael Phillips and Rev. Scott Turner officiating. Interment will follow in the Ellerbe Cemetery.

Mrs. Greene was born November 17, 1895 in Union County, a daughter of the late Lonnie and Joanna Pyron Haigler. She was a longtime member of the Ellerbe First Baptist Church where she was active in many of the organizations and she especially enjoyed working with the extension department. Mrs. Greene was active as a volunteer in many organizations in the community including the schools and the American Red Cross. Mrs. Greene was preceded in death by her husband, L. Wayne Greene; 3 sons, L.W. Greene, Jr., Lowell and Duane Greene; and 2 daughters-in-law, Hazel Greene and Mary E. Greene.

Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, Carmon and Elizabeth Greene of Charlotte, and Ward Greene of Norwood; daughters and sons-in-law, Eloise and Harry Wrenn of Ellerbe, Bobbie and Jimmy Killinger of Myrtle Beach; daughter-in-law, Lena Greene of Rockingham; a brother, Coy Haigler of Asheboro; 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 - 3:00 PM Saturday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and at other times at the home of Harry and Eloise Wrenn, 210 Clayton Carriker Road, Ellerbe.

Memorials may be made to Ellerbe First Baptist Church or the Ellerbe Rescue Squad.

Barringer, Glenn Alfred

HICKORY -- Mr. Glenn Alfred Barringer, 74, died May 3, 2001 at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Graveside service is 3 pm Sunday, May 6, 2001 in the Bethany United Church of Christ Cemetery, with Dr. Paul Cook and Reverend Mark Nanny officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm Saturday at Hickory Funeral Home.

Mr. Barringer was a native of Catawba County, and had retired from his position with Durham Life Insurance Company. He attended Lenoir Rhyne College, and worked for the American Legion Post 48 as Assistant Manager for over 20 years. Mr. Barringer was a member of the American Legion for 40 years, and received many awards for service to the Hickory Chapter and the state American Legion. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Barringer.

Mr. Barringer is survived by two brothers, Alex Barringer of Hickory, and Paul Barringer of Conover; and by his sister, Mary Kay Barringer of Charlotte.

Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 48, PO Box 505, Hickory, NC 28603.

Hickory Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Barringer.

Fox, Jewel Leathco

MT. HOLLY -- Jewel Leathco Fox, 60, of 120 Third Street, died Thursday, May 3, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of McAdenville and daughter of the late James Leathco.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Fox; 3 daughters, Renee Clemmer of Stanley, Sheila Fox of the home, and Jackie Fox of Mt. Holly; her mother, Geneva Poole Smith of Lowell; 2 brothers, Scotty J. Smith of Dallas and Jock M. Smith of Lowell; 1 sister, Christine Greeley of Mt. Holly; and 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth Pearl Baker, Hannah Darlene Clemmer, Benjamin Jack Davis, Jordan Lee Smith, and Seth Rhyne Clemmer.

Services will be conducted by the Rev. John D. Mayberry, 3pm Sunday at Carothers Funeral Home with the burial to follow in Hillcrest Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7-9pm, Saturday.

Carothers Funeral Home in Mt. Holly is serving the family.

Grier, Robert Ralph

Mr. Robert Ralph Grier, Jr., 74, of Charlotte, died Friday, May 4, 2001 at Mercy Hospital Main.

Mr. Grier was born July 1, 1926 in Mecklenburg County, son of the late Robert Ralph Grier, Sr. and Nell Brown Grier. Mr. Grier was a life long member of Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church. He was a dairy farmer, deacon at the church, and taught Sunday school. Mr. Grier was a member of Steele Creek Masonic Lodge #737, and past commander of American Legion Post #221. Mr. Grier was a World War II Veteran serving in the Pacific Theater with the United States Navy. He was a Volunteer Fireman at Steele Creek, served on the Mecklenburg County Drainage Commission, and also with the Mecklenburg County Civil Service Board. Mr. Grier was a Real Estate broker, and served on the committee of A.S.C.S.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be 11 am Monday, May 7, 2001 at Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, officiated by The Reverend Jim Young. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 pm Sunday, May 6, 2001 at McEwen funeral service Charlotte Chapel.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Edith Harper Grier; three sons, Ralph S. Grier, Robert E. Grier, and Roy T. Grier and his wife Debby; and two granddaughters, Katherine and Caroline Grier, all of Charlotte.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Acampora and Dr. Farahany, and the staff at Mercy Main and Avante.

Memorials may be made to Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Family Life Center, 9401 York road, Charlotte, NC 28210.
