Smith, Joyce Hamilton

NORWOOD -- Mrs. Joyce Hamilton Smith, 65, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001. Funeral 4pm Friday, Cottonville Baptist Church; burial in church cemetery. Visitation 7-9pm Thursday night, Edwards Funeral Home, Norwood, entrusted with plans.

Geitner, Robert Walker

HICKORY -- Robert Walker Geitner, of 420 4th Avenue, N.W., died Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was born on November 3, 1909, son of the late Charles Henry Geitner and the late Suehonor Shuford Geitner. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Bess Griset Geitner.

Mr. Geitner served as President of First National Bank for 18 years and was Chairman of the Board for 5 years. Before joining First National, he was a lawyer, court clerk, solicitor, Hickory Municipal Court Judge and a sergeant with the Hickory Police Department. In addition to his work at First National, he served on the boards of Shuford Mills, Inc. and Hamco, Inc. He also at one time, served as president and director of both Ivey Weavers, Inc. and Superior Cable Corp. He was director and treasurer of Catawba Medical Foundation, Inc. and was president of the Hickory Chamber of Commerce, which later merged into the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce. He served as a director of Catawba Valley, and, he was a member of Corinth Reformed United Church of Christ.

Mr. Geitner was also a member of Technical Institute, now Catawba Valley Community College, and of the Foundation of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, NC, Inc. A 1926 graduate of Claremont Central High School, he was also on the boards of Mercersburg Academy of which he is an alumnus and of the Lancaster Theological Seminary.

Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Friday at Corinth Reformed United Church of Christ, the Reverend Bob Thompson officiating. The family will remain at the church following the service to receive friends. Visitation will be on Thursday evening from 5-7 PM at the residence, 420 4th Avenue, N.W. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

Survivors are his sons, Clement Geitner of Hickory, NC, Robert Geitner of Asheville, NC and Jacques Geitner of Hickory; grandchildren, Mary Geitner, Daniel Geitner, Clement Geitner, Joseph Geitner, and Angel Geitner; and great grandchildren, Stuart Walker Coates, Austin Jacob Geitner, Emma Claire Geitner, and Ryan Louise Geitner. Aside from his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph, Clement, Charles and John (Bud) Geitner; and grandchildren, Robert Walker Geitner, III, and Jacques Griset Geitner, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to R. Walker, III Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, P.O. Box 1888, Asheville, NC 28801.

Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family.

Crane, Betty Louise

MORGANTON -- Betty Louise Crane, 62, died May 1, 2001. Funeral is 2 pm Friday at Riverside Baptist Church, burial in Burke Memorial Park. Visitation is 7-8:30 pm Thursday at Sossoman Funeral Home of Morganton.

Hicks, Fred Dale

VILAS -- Mr. Fred Dale Hicks, 83, died Monday, April 30, 2001 at Mtn. Home V.A. Medical Center. Graveside service is 10am today (Wednesday) at Mount Lawn Cemetery in Boone. Hampton funeral service in charge of arrangements.

Branham, Larry Joe (Pete)

LEXINGTON -- Larry Joe (Pete) Branham, 37, died Friday, April 28, 2001. Memorial Service 3pm Thursday, Gleaners Holiness Church. Visitation after the service at the home of the brother, David Junior Branham. Davidson Funeral Home entrusted.

Parsons, James Henry

NEWTON -- Mr. James Henry Parsons, 87, died May 1, 2001 at the Abernathy Center of Newton.

Funeral is 11 am Friday, May 4, 2001 at Crestview Baptist Church, with Reverend Mike Isaacs and Dr. Billy Rivers officiating. The body will lie in state for 60 minutes prior to service. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, with a 3 pm graveside service. Acting as pallbearers will be Blake Harris, Ken Large, Robbie Parsons, Chris Thompson, Ray Hunt, Bill Chester, Larry Hershenson and Bill Richardson. The family will receive friends from 10-11 am Friday at Crestview Baptist Church in Lenoir.

Mr. Parsons was born in Woodruff, SC on September 15, 1913, a son of the late Harlan Martin Parsons and the late Sara Maude Parsons. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hudson, NC, and was a previous member of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, where he was a Sunday School teacher, deacon, and also served as Scout Master for 25 years. Mr. Parsons the former owner/operator of J. H. Parsons Contractors of Spartanburg, SC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Gibson Parsons, and a son, William Keith Parsons.

Mr. Parsons is survived by two sons, Jamie Parsons of Lenoir, and Robert `Bobby` Leonard Parsons of Collinsville, VA; two daughters, GiGi Anne Thompson and Saralyn Gibson Young, both of Spartanburg, SC; one sister, Virginia Kaine of Philadelphia, PA; as well as twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Pendry's Funeral Home of Lenoir is handling arrangements for the family of Mr. Parsons.

Mitravijarn, Thospol `Mike`

Thospol `Mike` Mitravijarn, of 10200 Hanging Moss Trail, Charlotte, died Monday, April 30, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born November 12, 1945 in Bangkok, Thailand and came to live in the US in 1972.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 2 from 6:30-8:30 P.M. at the Carolina Funeral and Cremation Center, 5505 Monroe Road. On Thursday, May 3, at 6:30 P.M. a Memorial Service will be conducted at the funeral home.

Mike was retired from IBM and also was the former owner/operator of IronWood Golf Practice Range.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; sons, Phillip and Martin; brothers, Mr. Vorapot Mitravijarn and Mr. Alonkorn Nanakonpanom; sisters, Miss Pensiri Mitravijarn, Mrs. Siripen Sutidet and Mrs. Sureeporn Poosri; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.

Carolina Funeral and Cremation is entrusted with arrangements.

Graham, Debbie A.

ROCKINGHAM -- Miss Debbie A. Graham, 24, died May 1, 2001. Funeral is 3 pm Friday at Leak Street School in Rockingham, interment in Love Cemetery. Visitation is 1-8 pm today at Harris Funeral Home in Mt. Gilead.

Sloan, Nell Frances Gamble

WAXHAW -- Mrs. Nell Frances Gamble Sloan, 77, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001 in Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Gordon funeral service of Monroe.

Sellers, James Howard (Jim)

LEXINGTON -- James Howard (Jim) Sellers, Sr., 86, died Monday, April 30, 2001. Memorial service 3pm Friday, Second Reformed United Church of Christ; burial Lexington City Cemetery. Visitation 6-8pm Thursday, Davidson Funeral Home.

Covington, Margaret Sara Voss

WHISPERING PINES -- Mrs. Margaret Sara Voss Covington, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at her home after a short illness. Mrs. Covington, 84, was the daughter of Col. Thomas S. Voss of Walnut Grove, NC, and Sara de la Garza of Laredo, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. William E. Covington, Jr., who was born in Rockingham, NC. She and her husband were married in 1938 in Manila, Philippines, where they met while she was living with her parents at Nichols Army Air Field. After the war, they enjoyed a typical military life, living in Michigan, California, Alabama, Germany, Syria, and Virginia. After retiring from the Air Force in 1957, the family moved to Culver Military Academy in Indiana, and then, in 1965, to Whispering Pines.

Mrs. Covington is survived by one son, William E. Covington, III (Capt. US Navy, Ret.) of Southern Pines; two daughters, Cathryn C. Kolito of Carnelian Bay, California, and Carolyn V. Covington of the home; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home from 7-8 pm Thursday evening. Mrs. Covington will be interred at Raleigh National Cemetery with her husband. The family requests that memorials be made to First Health Hospice, 5 Aviemore Drive, Pinehurst, NC 28374.

Taylor, Curtis

PEACHLAND -- Mr. Curtis Taylor, 75, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at his home.

funeral service is 2 pm Thursday, May 3, at Oakdale Baptist Church, with Reverend Bud Simpson and Reverend Tim Knotts officiating. Interment will be in Griffin Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm this evening, May 2, 2001 at Morgan and Son Funeral Home.

Mr. Taylor was born in Anson County, and had been self-employed as a painter. He was a son of the late Rufus W. and Eunice Baucom Taylor.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Josephine Preslar Taylor; one brother, Lee Taylor of Polkton; and three sisters, Rosa Wright of Polkton, Maggie Caudle of Peachland, and Josie Baucom of Monroe.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd, Monroe, NC 28110, or to Oakdale Baptist Church, c/o Richard Porter, Route 2, Peachland, NC 28133.

Morgan and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LEXINGTON -- Connie May Grubb Clodfelter, 82, died Monday, April 30, 2001. Funeral 2pm Thursday, Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church; burial at church cemetery. Visitation Wednesday, 6-8pm at Davidson Funeral Home, entrusted with plans.

Brinkley, Otto Jacob (O.J.)

SALISBURY -- Mr. Otto Jacob (O.J.) Brinkley, Jr., 77, died Monday April 30, 2001. Funeral 3pm Thursday, Trading Ford Baptist Church; burial in church cemetery. Visitation Wednesday 6:30-8:30 pm Lyerly Funeral Home.

Harrison, Bynum H.

BOONE -- Mr. Bynum H. Harrison, 80, died May 1, 2001. Funeral is 2 pm today at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is 12:30-2 pm today at the funeral home. Barney Hampton funeral service, Inc. of Boone is in charge.

Perry, Marie Hayssen

WILMINGTON -- Mrs. Marie Hayssen Perry, 97, died Monday, April 30, 2001.

She was born in Sheyboygan, WI, on June 25, 1903, the daughter of the late Arthur Herman and Jane Pape Hayssen. She attended Grant School in Sheboygan and then attended Ferry Hall Academy in Lake Forest, IL and Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA, class of 1925.

In 1928 she married Albert Fraser Perry. He preceded her in death in 193. She was a longtime member of St. James Church, serving in many capacities, including being a member of St. Ann's Guild.

For 52 years she served as treasurer of the Catherine Kennedy Home. She was a long time member of the Ministering Circle of Wilmington. She was an early member of the Cape Fear Country Club and many delightful recipes of hers were shared in the Cape Fear Cook Book. She was a member of the Colonial Dames of America in the state of NC and held many offices in that organization.

Among her greatest accomplishments was being a gracious homemaker, beloved wife, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many in all walks of life.

She is survived by two sons, Albert Fraser Perry, Jr. and his wife Rogene of Wrightsville Beach, NC, and Arthur Hayssen Perry and his wife Ruth of Elkhart Lake, WI; a daughter, Jane Perry Liles and her husband George of Concord, NC; grandsons George `Jock` Liles, Jr. of Concord, Arthur Perry of Jupiter, FL, William Perry of Broken Arrow, OK, Steven Perry of Tequesta, FL, and Michael Perry of Milwaukee, WI; granddaughters Perry Liles Lucas of Charlotte, Lee Perry Cramer of Raleigh, and Rae Ann Perry of Victoria, Australia; step grandsons Scott Fladland of Elgin, IL and Gregg Fladland of Oak Park, IL; and ten great grandchildren.

A service celebrating her life will be held at St. James Church, 3rd and Market Streets, at 2 pm Wednesday, May 2, 2001 by the Reverend Ronald G. Abrams and the Reverend Drake Whitelaw. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery beside her beloved husband. The family will receive friends at the residence, 1811 Brewton Ct.

The family asks that memorials be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 25 S. 3rd St., Wilmington, NC 28401, or the Colonial Dames of America, 224 Market St., Wilmington, NC 28401, or the Ministering Circle of Wilmington.

Cagle, Gerald Melburn

ROCKINGHAM -- Gerald Melburn Cagle, 75, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001. Funeral 3pm Friday, Carter Funeral Home Colonial Chapel; visitation 7-8:30pm Thursday at Carter Funeral Home.

Fuller, Mary Stewart

Mrs. Mary Stewart Fuller, 66, died Monday, April 30, 2001 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Funeral is 2 pm Friday, May 4, at McClintock Presbyterian Church, with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8 pm Thursday, May 3, at Grier's funeral service Chapel.

Mrs. Fuller was retired from her position as a nurse, and had worked for Westinghouse. She was a graduate of Sterling High School and Livingston College, as well as the Katie Bitting Nursing School. Mrs. Fuller received her Bachelor of Science from St. Joseph College in Standish, ME, and was a faithful member of McClintock Presbyterian Church since an early age.

Mrs. Fuller is survived by her husband, Larry Fuller, Sr., of Charlotte; three sons, Fredrick O. Fuller of Dallas, TX, and Larry Fuller, Jr. and Antonio S. Fuller (Judy), both of Charlotte; one sister, Katie S. Grier of Charlotte; two brothers, William C. Stewart of Fayetteville, and Charles H. Stewart of Charlotte; as well as nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Grier funeral service of Charlotte is serving the family of Mrs. Fuller.
