Ramirez, Armando Arthur
TEGA CAY -- Mr. Armando Arthur Ramirez, age 75, of 2058 Manilla Bay Lane, Tega Cay, SC, passed away May 1, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.
A son of the late John and Angela Ramirez, Mr. Ramirez was born May 22, 1925, in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Ramirez graduated from Polytechnic High School in May 1943, and was inducted into the U.S. Navy the following day. Mr. Ramirez remained in the Navy for 20 years. After his service he entered the University of North Carolina where he attended the Wilmington and the Charlotte Campus. He and his wife have resided in Tega Cay, SC since 1970 and they are charter members of Grace Presbyterian Church. He was involved in the development of the church and was on its first board of elders, serving three years.
Art had been involved in many volunteer activities: church, volunteer fire department, U.S. Power Squadron (past commander), POA, Fort Mill Band Boosters (former Chairman), Red Cross, The Tega Cay Beautification Committee (former Chairman).
Since retirement, he has successfully completed the Master Gardener and Ham Radio Classes. He had lots of fun with the Men's Breakfast Group, the Vintage Club and the ROMEO's (retired old men eating out) and was an avid bridge player. Mr. Ramirez was also a life member of the VFW Post #9138 and the Fleet Reserve Association.
A Memorial Service will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Grace Presbyterian Church with Rev. Art Gatewood officiating. Military honors will follow the service and there will be a reception afterward in the church.
Mr. Ramirez is survived by his wife, Dean Ramirez of Tega Cay, SC; his daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Buck Smyre of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Ramirez of Clarksville, VA and Arthur Michael Ramirez and Kelly Sherman Ramirez of Greenville, SC; his sister, Lolita Araujo of El Salvador; grandchildren, Ginger and her husband Kevin Lockette, Christy and her husband Doug Borton, Todd Smyre and his wife Carolyn, Andrea and her husband Andrew Sannipoli; Richie Ramirez, John Morgan Ramirez and Maggie Ramirez; great grandchildren, Griffin Lockette, Connor Sannipoli and Hudson Lockette.

Wood, Sue Sparks
Mrs. Sue Sparks Wood, 58, of Charlotte, died at her home. A graveside service will be held 7 pm Friday, May 4, 2001 at Crown Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm this evening at Charlotte Bridge Association, 220 East Park Ave., Charlotte, NC.
Mrs. Wood was born on July 5, 1942 in Cairo, GA, to the late Eural Thomas Sparks and Candace Sparks. She was an American Contract Bridge League certified director, star teacher and on the board of directors for the Charlotte Bridge Association. She was also a Silver Life Master of Bridge. Mrs. Wood loved cooking, reading, and she loved to sing. She will be deeply missed by all.
Mrs. Wood is survived by her husband, Woody Wood; daughters, Leigh Wood of Carrollton, GA, and Jodi Reaves Wood Brinzey and husband Peter of Concord; and her mother, Candace Sparks of Cairo, GA.
The family has asked that memorials be made to the Arthritis Foundation for research in Rheumatoid Arthritis, 5019 Nations Crossing Road, Charlotte, NC 28217.

MARSTON -- Grover C. Baxley, Jr., 77, died Monday, April 30, 2001. Funeral services will be conducted 11 am Wednesday, May 2, in the chapel of Watson-King Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Richmond Memorial Park.
Rogers, Anna Lucille Strader
DALLAS -- Mrs. Anna Lucille Strader Rogers, 74, of 779 Dallas Spencer Mountain Rd. died April 30, 2001, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Graveside service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Long Creek Memorial Cemetery, Dallas with Rev. Roy Barbee officiating. Visitation is 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at Dallas Funeral Home.
Mrs. Rogers was a native of Rhea County, TN, the daughter of the late Jesse and Maude McCullen Strader. She was retired fro Gaston County School System having worked in food service at W.C. Friday Junior High and North Gaston High School. She was a member of Community Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Lewis Rogers of the home; sons and daughter-in-law, Johnny Rogers of Gastonia, Tommy and Elaine Rogers of Dallas; daughter, Sandy and Mike Perkins; brothers and sister-in-law, Vines Strader of Dayton, Tn, Charles and Grace Strader of Rockwood, TN; sister, Ruth Edwards of Spring City, TN; granddaughters, Leslie and Randy Best of Bessemer City; Brittany LeeAnn Rogers of Dallas; Mirafe Rogers of Bessemer City; Marilyn Rogers of Charlotte and Erica Perkins of Dallas; great-grandson, Austin Rogers of Bessemer City.

Mr. Savoy Bentley Hall, died April 28, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital.
Funeral is 1 pm Thursday at Rock Hill United Methodist Church in Stanley, with Reverend Fredrick Bowman, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1 pm Thursday at the church. Mr. Hall was born in Mt. Holly, NC, and worked for Sandoz Chemical for over 30 years.
Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Ruth N. Hall, of Charlotte; two sons, Savoy Oscar Hall and Steven Hall, both of Charlotte; one brother, James C. Edward Hall (Nannie), of Charlotte; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Cozette Hall of Stanley, and Mrs. Letha N. Shipp of Charlotte.

Brooks, Charles B. `Chuck`
Mr. Charles B. `Chuck` Brooks, 55, of Charlotte, died Friday, April 27, 2001. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at Living Saviour Lutheran Church, with The Reverend Roger Storm officiating.
Mr. Brooks was born May 28, 1945 in Chicago, IL, son of Viola Behm Brooks and the late Charles Irving Brooks. He retired as a Technical Sergeant with the U.S. Air Force after twenty-three years of service.
Mr. Brooks is survived by his wife, Jackie Brooks of the home; daughter, Kerry Switzer and her husband, Mike of Dallas, TX; sons, Scott Brooks and his wife, Annette of Charlotte, and Justin Brooks and his wife, Bridgette of Daytona Beach, FL; grandchildren, Lora Beebe, Andrew, Brooke and Courtney Switzer, and Nicole and Justin Brooks; his mother, Viola Brooks of Washington state; auntie, Ruby Stillman of Wisconsin; sisters, Jane, Mary, and Sandra; and his brother, Gary.

Henry, Mildred Powers
LANCASTER -- Mrs. Mildred Powers Henry, 81, of 701 Sumter Street, died Monday, April 30, 2001 in Springs Memorial Hospital. Born in Lancaster County, she was the daughter of the late Edward Jasper and Barbara Ella Knight Powers and was the widow of Samuel W. `Wink` Henry. She was a retired employee of Lancaster Bakery and a member of Union Baptist Church.
Mrs. Henry is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Barbara Plyler, Mrs. Dorothy Huffstickler and Mrs. Barbara Dabbs, all of Lancaster; and one grandson, Donnie Huffstickler of Fort Lawn.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 pm Thursday afternoon from the graveside in Union Baptist Church Cemetery by Rev. Doug Humphries. The family will receive friends at Mahaffey Funeral Home from 7-9 pm Wednesday evening.

Neal, Ethel Taylor
YORK -- Mrs. Ethel Taylor Neal, 96, of 103 Norris Ave. died April 29, 2001.
Graveside service is 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeview Memory Gardens with Rev. James L. Correll officiating.
Mr. Neal was the co-owner, with her husband, Claude, of Neal's Grocery and Gas in Rock Hill and later in York. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, York and was the widow of Claude R. Neal.
Survivors include her brothers, Claude Taylor and Jack Taylor, both of York; one sister, Ellie T. McDonald of Rock Hill; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Leroy Rann, 76 of 937 Rodey Avenue, Apt. 2, Charlotte, NC, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at his residence.
funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2001 at 1:00pm at First Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 209 West 28th Street, Charlotte, NC, Rev. James Hawthrone officiating. Interment will follow at the Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 12:00 to 12:55pm.
Mr. Rann was born in Charlotte on January 14, 1925. He retired in 1983 after 35 years as a packer with Ralston Purina Company.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Rann of Charlotte; six sons, Elliotte Rann (Rita), Louis Rann (Rosie), Carl Rann, Earl Rann (Kim), Bruce Rann, and Jesse Rann, all of Charlotte; two daughters, Dorothy Wallace (Rev. Terry Wallace, Sr.) and Linda Hicklin (Johnny), all of Charlotte; brothers, James Rann and Isaiah Rann (Corina), all of Charlotte; sister, Louise Rann of Charlotte; twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

STANLEY -- Joshua Michael Combs, 18, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00PM Friday at Evergreen Cemetery in Belmont with a Memorial Celebration Service following at 7:00PM Friday evening at Central Church at Little Rock, 1209 Little Rock Road, Charlotte. Rev. Chuck Davis will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7-9PM Thursday evening also at Central Church at Little Rock. Florists are asked to carry arrangements directly to the church beginning at 3:00PM Thursday. Joshua was born in Gastonia and had been a life long resident of Gaston County. Survivors include his mother, Rena Combs of Stanley, and two sisters, Heather Combs of Cherryville and Tiffany Combs of Stanley; his maternal grandfather, Mr. Bobby Combs of Charlotte and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ethel J. Combs of Mt. Holly.
