EDGEMOOR -- Mr. Shannon David Long, 58, of 5506 Forest Brook Drive, died Friday at his home. Born February 11, 1943 in Hamlet, NC, he was the son of Mrs. Erma Lou Long and the late Shannon Burnell Long. He was a computer analyst with several banks.

Mr. Long is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cheryl Winters Long; mother, Mrs. Erma L. Long of Hamlet; and one daughter, Miss Amanda R. Long of Chester.

Memorial services will be conducted at 10 am Friday from Wright's Home For Funerals in Chester, with Reverend Bill Fleming officiating.

Harrill, Kenneth Michael
GASTONIA -- Mr. Kenneth Michael Harrill, 22, of 2138 Brookneal Dr. died April 3, 2001, at his residence.

Funeral is 2 p.m. Thursday at Flint Groves Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Bowers officiating. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park.

Mr. Harrill was a native of Gaston County. He was a member of Flint Groves Baptist Church and worked for Insulator Service Inc.

Survivors include his parents, Kenneth Vance Harrill Jr. and Diane Atkins Harrill of Gastonia; wife, Jennifer Shires Harrill of the home; paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Peggy Harrill of Gastonia; maternal grandparents, Bill and Mary Atkins of Gastonia; two children, Morgan Paige and Kenzie Michelle Harrill of the home; two sisters, Erica and Courtney Harrill of Gastonia; step-mother, Crystal Wentz Harrill of Gastonia.

Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia is serving the Harrill family.

Clodfelter, Howard Daniel
GREENSBORO -- Howard Daniel Clodfelter, 38, died Sunday, April 1, 2001. Graveside service is at Friday, noon at Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, 9:30-11:00am at Ridge Funeral Home.

Preyer, The Honorable L. Richardson
GREENSBORO -- The Honorable L. Richardson Preyer, 82, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at the Cone Memorial Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church.

Congressman Preyer was a native of Greensboro and attended the public schools. He received his A.B. Degree from Princeton University and his Law Degree from the Harvard Law School.

At the First Presbyterian Church he was an Elder, teacher/member of the Young Men's Bible Class for over 40 years and a Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

During World War II he was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and served for four years as a Gunnery Officer and Executive Office on Destroyer duty in the Atlantic and South Pacific; he received the Bronze Star for action in Okinawa.

Mr. Preyer was a appointed as a City Judge, and a North Carolina Superior Court Judge. In 1961 he was appointed Federal Judge of the Middle District Court by President John F. Kennedy. In 1963 Judge Preyer resigned his Judgeship to become a candidate for Governor of North Carolina. In 1964 he became City Executive for Greensboro at the North Carolina National Bank. In November 1968, he was elected to the United States Congress, 6th District of North Carolina and served until 1980. The U.S. Federal Courthouse and Post Office are named in his honor as the L. Richardson Preyer Federal Building in Greensboro.

Among his many Congressional Committees he was most proud of serving as Chairman of the Select Committee on Ethics which drew up the Congressional Code of Ethics and Chairman of the House Committee on Assassination of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King.

The Honorable Mr. Preyer served in many other ways and was honored as Chairman of the Board of the North Carolina Outward Bound School; Commissioner, Greensboro Little League and Pony Baseball programs; Honorary Chairman of the Greater Greensboro Open (GGCC); Inter-Club Council's Outstanding Civic Leader of the Year Award; Greensboro Chamber's "Uncle Joe Cannon" Award for outstanding leadership; Distinguished Service Award at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine; and recipient of the Phillip Hart Memorial Award for Conscience by "Washington Magazine".

At the time of his death he was co-chairman of the Guilford Battleground Company; member of the Board for the National Humanities Center; Chairman of Coastal Futures Committee (appointed by Governor James B. Hunt); Trustee: Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation; H. Smith Richardson Foundation; NC Institute of Political Leadership; Woodrow Wilson Center (Smithsonian Institute); Uplift, Inc. (past president); and the NC Institute of Medicine.

He had served as a Trustee of the National Nature Conservancy; Hastings Institute of Medicine; Greensboro National Bank; Director of Vanguard Cellular Systems Inc. and Piedmont Management Inc. He also served on the Board of Directors of Guilford College, Davidson College, UNC School of Social Work; Robert Wood Johnson Fellows - UNC Medical School; Community Self Help; The American Red Cross, Salvation Army, NC Museum of Natural History; and UNC-G Excellence Foundation.

He was preceded in death recently by his wife, Emily Harris Preyer; and a brother, William Yost Preyer Jr.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, L. Richard and Marilyn Jacobs Preyer Jr. and Britt Armfield and Alice Dockery Preyer; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Norris Preyer and Henry Patrick Oglesby, Jane Bethell Preyer, and Emily Harris Preyer and Richard Tillman Fountain III; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Robert Otto and Kitty Preyer, Dr. Norris Watson and Catherine Preyer, and Frederick Lynn and Margaret Preyer; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Russell H. Tucker and Mrs. Doris Preyer; grandchildren, L. Richardson Preyer III, Parker Jacobs Preyer, Jane Elizabeth Preyer, Emily Preyer Oglesby, Britt Armfield Jr., John Calder Preyer, William Harris Preyer, Mary Norris Preyer Fountain, Richard Tillman Fountain IV, Janie Katherine Fountain, Preyer Harris Fountain, and Peter Richardson Fountain.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church's family enrichment Center and request the memorial contributions be made to one's favorite charity.

Williams, Hilda Harmon
GREENSBORO -- Mrs. Hilda Harmon Williams passed away on Wednesday, April 4th, 2001 at her home.

A private graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. April 7th, 2001, in McBee Cemetery, McBee, South Carolina, with the Reverend Thomas B. Huggins, D.D. officiating.

Mrs. Williams was born on August 22, 1920, in Florence, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ivey Pearson and Annie Laney Harmon, and her brother, John Harold Harmon. She grew up in McBee, South Carolina, and graduated in 1928 from Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina. She has lived in Greensboro since 1959.

Mrs. Williams was a founding member and board member of the Corporation of Guardianship, past president of the Association for Retarded Citizens of Greensboro, past member of the Guilford County Domicilary Home Community Advisory Committee, a member of the Arc of North Carolina's LIFEguardianship Council, from which she received the LIFEguardianship Distinguished Service Award in 1995. Mrs. Williams was a member of the board of Sue Lynn Residential Services, and a member of the Wednesday Morning Book Club. Her work career included teacher, dietitian and personnel counselor. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, wife, and friend to the many people who knew her.

Survivors include her husband of fifty three years, Edwin McCahill Williams, Jr. of the home; son, Edwin McCahill (Mac) Williams, III of the home; daughter, Randall Williams Newberry, of Hampstead, North Carolina; sister, Lois Harmon Stevens and husband, John Ashley of Grenada, Mississippi; sister, Anne Harmon McGregor and husband, Duncan Douglas of Chesterfield, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Anita Williams Coe, of Charlotte, North Carolina; cousin, Mildred Dewberry of New York, New York; grandson, William Alexander Newberry, III; granddaughter, Brent Newberry Garcia, and husband, Albie, and great-grandchild, Genevieve; granddaughter, Casey Ann Newberry; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on April 5th, 2001 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the home of her husband and son, 400 East Greenway Drive North, Greensboro.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, North Carolina 27405; or to Arc/NC LIFEguardianship, 16 East Rowan Street, Suite 204, Raleigh, North Carolina 27609.

Robinson, Mary S.
GROVER -- Mrs. Mary S. Robinson, 81, resident of 102 Springdale Dr., died April 3, 2001 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center of Shelby.

funeral service is 11 am Friday at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Tony Fulbright officiating. Interment will be in Grover Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm tonight at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain, and at other times at the home, 102 Springdale Drive, Grover, NC.

She was a native of Hazard, KY, and daughter of the late Joseph and Nancy Fields Cotingame. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Cotingame. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Grover, where she was a member of the WMU and Golden Circle Sunday School Class. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Robinson is survived by her husband, James Darvin Robinson of Grover; one son, Joseph D. Robinson of Shelby; one daughter, Nancy Philbeck and her husband James, of Grover; five grandchildren, T. Max Davis, Brian L. Davis, James Robert Philbeck, Steven Philbeck, and Brian Philbeck; as well as six great-grandchildren, one nephew, and four nieces.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 237, Grover, NC 28073.

Benton, Myrtle L.
INDIAN TRAIL -- Miss Myrtle L. Benton, 92, died Wednesday at Lake Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Miss Myrtle was born March 15, 1909 in Union County, daughter of the late Allan and Zula Howard Benton. She was retired from the Union County School System.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 6, 2001, at Indian Trail United Methodist Church, with Rev. Angela Marlow officiating. Interment will follow in the Indian Trail City Cemetery. The family of Miss Benton will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 P.M. Thursday at the McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe.Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Hilda Benton, Mrs. Lou Doris Benton, both of Indian Trail, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Indian Trail United Methodist Church, 113 Indian Trail Road, Indian Trail, N.C. 28079.

Broughton, Ethel West
KERSHAW -- Mrs. Ethel West Broughton, 74, of 514 South Minor Street, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at home. She was born October 19, 1926 in Bethune, a daughter of the late George and Virgie Boyce West. She was a weaver with Springs Industries, a member of Second Baptist Church, where she was a member of Faithful Witness Sunday School Class and a member of the WMU.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Broughton will be held Friday, April 6, 2001 at 3pm at the Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Hogsed and Rev. Hugh McKinney officiating. Burial will be in the Kershaw City Cemetery.

Mrs. Broughton is survived by her husband Furman W. Broughton of the home; son Randall W. Broughton and his wife, Christy of Myrtle Beach; daughter Vicky Cauthen and her husband, Ronnie of Pawleys Island; brothers, Heyward West and Buck West, both of Bethune; sisters, Aline W. Mobley of Bethune, Mary Jane Sowell and her husband, Melvin of Kershaw, and Syble W. Sullivan of Kershaw; grandsons, Kim Cauthen and his wife, Courtney, Brandon Broughton and Brentley Broughton; granddaughters, Melanie Busby and her husband, Marion, and Alicia Broughton; and great-grandchildren, Justin Busby and Jalen Busby. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joe West and a sister, Lillian W. Catoe.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Second Baptist Church, 7737 Kershaw-Camden Hwy., Kershaw, SC 29067.

The family will receive friends Thursday April 5, 2001 from 7-9pm at the Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw Chapel and other times at the home.

Green, W. D. `Dub`
KINGS MOUNTAIN -- Mr. W. D. `Dub` Green, 76, resident of White Oak Manor, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at home.

Graveside service is 1 pm Thursday at Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, with the Reverend Mitchell Pruitt officiating.

A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Walter David and Ethel Parker Green. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Grover, NC, and was retired from the textile industry. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Frances Phillips.

Mr. Green is survived by six sisters.

Mackey, Charlie H.
LANCASTER -- Charlie H. Mackey, 86, of 648 Cunningham Rd. died April 1, 2001, at his resident.

Funeral is 3 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion AME Zion Church with Rev. Dr. Jewett Walker officiating. Burial will be in Centennial AME Church Cemetery.

Mr. Mackey was born Feb. 9, 1915 in Lancaster. He was a retired U.S. Postal Service employee. He was a member of Mt. Zion AME Zion Church and a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII.

Survivors include his wife, Birda J. Mackey; son, Charlie H. Mackey Jr. of Lancaster; daughters, Birda M. Gaddy, Jane M. Hood and Gloria M. Gordon, all of Lancaster; and sister, Lillie Mae Young of Lancaster.

Crawford Funeral Home is in charge.

Sinclair, Wilma Massey
LANCASTER -- Mrs. Wilma Massey Sinclair, 85, of Shiloh Unity Road, Lancaster, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at her home. Born in Lancaster, SC, she was a daughter of the late Ben Calvin and Effie Jane Sinclair Massey, and was the widow of Clark Charles Sinclair. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church, Lancaster.

Mrs. Sinclair is survived by three sons, Charles Louis Sinclair, and Danny James Sinclair, both of Lancaster and Timmy Sinclair of Pageland; seven daughters, Mrs. Mildred Hefner, Mrs. Patricia Whitaker, both of Lancaster, Mrs. Rachel Adams of Kershaw, Mrs. Freida Wright, Mrs. Janice Snipes, and Mrs. Judy Robertson, all of Lancaster and Mrs. Sonja Clark of Kershaw; two brothers, Bill Massey of Lancaster and Billy Jack Massey of Great Falls; two sisters, Mrs. Dolly Walker of Clover and Mrs. Beatrice Gurganious of Lancaster; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm Friday, April 6, from the Mahaffey Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by Rev. Thurman Johnson. Interment will follow in the Lancaster Memorial Park, Lancaster, SC. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-9pm at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lancaster, Springs Memorial Hospital, 800 West Meeting Street, Lancaster, SC 29720.

LANDIS -- Margaret Vanderford Thompson, 77, died April 3, 2001. Service 2 PM Friday at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. Visitation is 7-8:30 PM today at the funeral home.

LENOIR -- Mr. Charles Story, 61, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by Pendry's Funeral Home.
