Bessie Smith

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Thursday for Bessie Estelle Cagle Smith, 84, Meadows Retirement Center, formerly of Stanfield, who died Monday (Aug. 23, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Feb. 26, 1915, in Union County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Walter Vance and Ida Williams Cagle. A graduate of Stanfield High School, she retired from Hoover Hosiery Mill, Concord. She was a member of Love’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Stanfield.

Survivors include son Billy Wayne Smith of the Meadows Retirement Center, Rockwell.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Leslee Lyndon.

Visitation: 9: 30-10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis.

Gerald ‘Tim’ Thompson

ROCKWELL — Gerald Timothy “Tim” Thompson, 57, 714 China Grove Highway, died Monday (Aug. 23, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Nov. 14, 1941, in Stanly County, Mr. Thompson was a son of the late Robert and Frances Huneycutt Thompson. He was a self-employed painter.

Survivors include sons Gerald Timothy Thompson Jr., Wadesboro, and Terry Wayne and Mark Anthony Thompson, both of Albemarle; brothers Donnie Thompson, Rockwell, Phillip Thompson, Charlotte, and Michael Thompson; sisters Brenda of Spencer, and Barbara; and one grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Community Full Gospel Church, Norwood, conducted by the Rev. Wesley Cribbs. The body will be placed in the church prior to the service. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: The body will be taken from Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, to the home of son Terry Wayne Thompson, 23888 Edgefield Road, Albemarle, where the family will receive friends.

Mae Hinson Carelock

KANNAPOLIS — Mae Hinson Carelock, 83, 1005 Austin St., died Tuesday (Aug. 24, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a day of serious illness.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

The family will be at the home of daughter Faye McDaniel, 403 Dodge St.

Virner Yckle Roach

KANNAPOLIS — Virner Yckle Roach, 78, 1012 Desoto Ave., died Tuesday (Aug. 24, 1999) at his home.

Born Oct. 16, 1920, in Royston, Ga., Mr. Roach was a son of the late William Doc and Sally Elizabeth Crowe Roach. He worked in this area since 1932. He worked at Cannon Mills Plant 1 after his retirement as superintendent of trucking at Martin Marietta in Charlotte.

Survivors include wife Mae Caldwell Roach; daughters Linda R. Johnson, Kannapolis, and Mrs. Terry (Janice R.) Helms, Winston-Salem; brother Hall Roach, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Don Davis and the Rev. Tim Gold. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8: 30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Desoto Avenue.

Memorials: Hospice of Cabarrus County, P.O. Box 1235, Concord, N.C. 28026-1235.

Rosalee Pressley

LEXINGTON — Rosalee Mason Pressley, 63, formerly of Winchester Drive, died Monday (Aug. 23, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born in Haywood County, Mrs. Pressley was a daughter of the late Grady Manson and Lily Wright Mason. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Her husband, Thomas A. Pressley, died March 16, 1989.

Survivors include daughters Sandra P. Myers, Mocksville, and Susan P. Carter, Welcome; sons Glenn M. Pressley, Welcome, and Thomas Pressley Jr., Lexington; sisters Clara Green, Canton, and Dorothy Albright, Salisbury; brothers Charles Mason, Canton, and Frank Mason, San Francisco, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Timberlake Chapel, Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Norman Frye, the Rev. Lee Young and the Rev. Duane Jarman. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Glenn Pressley, 1085 Reedy Creek Road.

Otho C. Rankin

CLEVELAND — The funeral will be Thursday for Otho C. Rankin, 71, Cleveland, who died Sunday (Aug. 22, 1999) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville.

Born Nov. 3, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Rankin was a son of the late Joe and Della Mae Wilson Rankin. A farmer, he was a member of Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church.

His wife, Georgia Ann Chambers Rankin, preceded him n death.

Survivors include sons Johnnie Rankin and Otho Rankin Jr., China Grove, and David Rankin, Landis; daughters Phyllis Ann Harris, Sheila R. Steele and JoAnn R. Moore, all of Kannapolis, and Brenda R. Caldwell, Mooresville; sisters Lillie Allison and Alma Ivery, both of Statesville, Hallie Torrence, Cleveland, and Dorothy McNeely and Barbara Fleming, both of Mount Ulla; brothers Joe Dewitt and Onzilo Rankin, both of Statesville; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Joe L. Spears. The body will be placed in the church prior to the service. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Bryant-Lytle-Young Funeral Home, Mooresville. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Brenda Caldwell, 114 Elm St., Mooresville.

Felicia Renee Farmer

The funeral will be Friday for Felicia Renee Farmer, 14, 1211 Grady St., who died Saturday (Aug. 21, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 9, 1984.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Love Christian Center, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Merriman and the Rev. Kevin Bost. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 2: 30 p.m. Friday at the church.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

Peggy Dull Elmore

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Thursday for Peggy Dull Elmore, 60, North Carolina Highway 801 North, who died Monday (Aug. 23, 1999) at Davie County Hospital after several months of declining health.

Born Sept. 17, 1938, in Davie County, Mrs. Elmore was the daughter of the late Charlie Spack and Beulah Dixon Dull. A graduate of Farmington High School, she attended Draughns Business School and was employed by Ingersol-Rand. She was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church, where she was church pianist.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Bear Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Cecil Wetherholt, the Rev. Jack Johnson and the Rev. Grady Tutterow. The body will be placed in the church at 10: 30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.

Memorials: Bear Creek Baptist Church, Fellowship Fund, 268 Bear Creek, Mocksville, N.C. 27028.

Timothy Alan Hutchins

The funeral will be Friday for Timothy Alan Hutchins, 52, Salisbury, who died Monday (Aug. 23, 1999) at his home.

Born Aug. 21, 1947, in Forsyth County, Mr. Hutchins was a son of Garland A. and Margaret Veach Hutchins of Kernersville. He was a 1965 graduate of East Forsyth High School and a 1969 graduate of Catawba College. A teacher, he taught at Erwin Junior High School, Granite Quarry, and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the church choir.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brother Gary W. Hutchins, Kernersville.

Services: Memorial, 4 p.m. Friday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Clifford A.H. Pike. The remains will be placed in the church’s columbarium.

Visitation: After the services in the St. Agnes Room of the church.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

Memorials: St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 131 W. Council St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

David Junior Fisher

The funeral will be Friday for David Junior Fisher, 79, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Aug. 24, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Jan. 12, 1920, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Fisher was a son of the late David Franklin and Lalar Ballard Fisher. He was a graduate of Farm Life High School, China Grove. A veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, he served with the 630th and 806th Tank Destroyer Batallions in the Philippines. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Corrections and later retired from Southern Railway’s Spencer Shops.

Mr. Fisher was a member of Keller Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Oasis Temple, Charlotte, Rowan County Shrine Club, Salisbury Moose Lodge 1400 and Faith American Legion Post 357, where he was a past commander. He was also a member of Landmark Church and the Yadkin Ramblers, a band that played at local nursing homes and nutritional sites.

A daughter, Nancy Fisher Holloway, died Jan. 13, 1987.

Survivors include wife Marie Hartman Fisher, whom he married May 10, 1987; sons Robert D. and Don W. Fisher, both of Salisbury; brothers Ralph C. and James H. Fisher, both of Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Benny R. Hillard, pastor, Landmark Church, and the Rev. Jerry Snipes, associate pastor. Burial, Kannapolis City Cemetery. Masonic rites by Keller Memorial Lodge 657.

Visitation: 7-8: 30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Memorials: Landmark Church, 1910 Mooresville Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28147; or Bethel United Methodist Church, 2380 Long Ferry Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28146.

Viola Hargrave Dixon

The funeral will be Thursday for Viola Elaine Hargrave Dixon, who died Friday (Aug. 20, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after three weeks of declining health.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, Trinity Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. George Hunter. The time of burial has been changed to 10 a.m. Friday at the National Cemetery in Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home.
