Virgie Cooper McMahan
Virgie Cooper McMahan, 87, of Marion, died, Tuesday, January 14, 2003, at her residence. Born November 15, 1915, in Avery County, she was a daughter of the late George Cooper and Jane Turbifield Cooper. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry McMahan and two sons, John and Robert McMahan. Mrs. McMahan was a member of the Redeemed Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son, Joe McMahan, of Marion;
Three daughters, Kathy Dutton, of Marion,
Dozena Carroll, of Dysartsville and Margaret Cruz, of Marion;
Two brothers, Wess Cooper, of Marion and Bob Cooper, of RI;
Three sisters, Molly Penland, of Hillsboro, NC,
Mammie Rathburn, of Hickory and Irene Knight, of AL;
Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, several great grandchildren and nieces & nephews.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00PM, Friday, January 17, 2003, at the Redeemed Freewill Baptist Church with the Reverend Tommy Hensley officiating. Interment will follow at the Chapel Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Services at the Church.
Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.
Frankie Joice Brooks Greene
Frankie Joice Brooks Greene, age 68, died June 29,2003 at her home in Nebo.
Born to William Talmadge Cooke and Annie Mae Haynes Cooke, she was a native of Buncombe County. She was employed with The McDowell Hospital in the Dietary Aide Department.
She is survived by her husband, Phillip Ray Greene, of the home; one son, Randall Lewis Brooks, of Old Fort; one daughter, Joice Annette Brooks, of Marion; two brothers, Ralph Cooke and Bobby Cooke, both of Asheville; four sisters, Frances Dixon, Joy Keener, Phillis Mitchell, and Barbara Macon, all of Asheville; and one grandchild, Shannon Elaine Kirby, of Marion.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday July 2, 2003 at 5 PM at Murphy’s Chapel Cemetery. The Rev. Ronnie Gentry will officiate.
Mr. Grady William Sweeney
Mr. Grady William Sweeney, 90, of Brentwood Road, Morganton, died Thursday, December 4, at Grace Hospital. He was born on August 23, 1913 in Beckley, West Virginia to the late Charles and Eliza Tyreed Sweeney.
Mr. Sweeney was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Morganton. In his earlier years, while living in Beckley, he served as a Sunday School Superintendent; Sunday School teacher; choir member and sang in a quartet. He was retired from Wamsutta Mills.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Dorsey, Ira, Ray, Edra and Cecil Sweeney.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Hager Sweeney; 2 sons; Derald Sweeney and wife Nancy of Morganton; Michael Sweeney and wife Lydia of Morganton; daughter, Susan S. Moses and husband, Michael of Morganton; sister, Gustava Evans of Beckley, W. Virginia; brother, Basil Sweeney, Beckley, W. Virginia; 7 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren
Services will be 3:00 PM Sunday at Kirksey Memorial Chapel with the Reverends Bill Holland and Steve Sells officiating. Interment will follow the service at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Emma Lee “Jack” Carswell Ricks
Mrs. Emma Lee “Jack” Carswell Ricks, 89, of Oak Street in Morganton died unexpectedly Friday, March 12, 2004 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.
Born November 27, 1914 n Burke County she was the daughter of the late Edward Carswell and Sarah Louise Dobson Carswell. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by: infant daughter Sarah Louise Ricks; brother Reid “Radio” Carswell, brother –in-law Dick Hennesse and a daughter –in- law Patricia Ricks.
Mrs. Ricks was a member of the Snow Hill United Methodist Church, had worked at Morganton Full Fashion Hosiery and had retired after forty years from Drexel Knitting. She had attended Glen Alpine High School. And she love playing the guitar and the harmonica; and “made” music with her neighbors on Oak Street.
Everybody’s mother and friend she is survived by: son Charles Walter “Walt “ Ricks of Morganton ; daughter Rebecca Larraine Ricks Cleveland and husband Karl of Morganton, grandchildren Jordan Kathleen Ricks , Norah-Beth Ricks Starrett and husband Mark; sisters Inez Wilson and husband Sonny, Winnie Clontz and husband Paul, Helen Hennesse all of Morganton; sister-in-law Ora Lee Carswell , nieces Patsy Carswell, Teenie Carswell Cobb, Felicia Cobb, Judy Carswell Glenn and husband Otis and a nephew Doug Carswell .
Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Monday, March 15, 2004 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with the Reverend Gary W. Leonard and Gerald Allen officiating. Burial will follow at the Snow Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 12:30 till 2 Monday, at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

Mr. Harrison Carswell
Mr. Harrison Carswell, 84, of Morganton, died Thursday, August 5, 2004 at Grace Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on September 29, 1919 in Burke County and was son of the late Obadiah Carswell and Mary Etta Pruitt.
Mr. Carswell was retired from the NC Department of Transportation. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He served as a precinct chairman for the Democratic Party in the Salem District and had been appointed by Governor Hunt to serve on the NC Board of Highway Commissioners. He was past President and Board member in the SalemVolunteer Fire Department and was a key person in helping to establish it. He was a long-time member of Burkemont Baptist Church. There he taught Sunday School for more than 30 years.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Myrle McKinney Carswell; brothers, Broadus Carswell, Odis Carswell, Oliver Carswell and Arthur Carswell; sister, Hattie Scott.
He is survived by his daughters, Ann Carswell Wright and husband, Doug; Theresa Kay Carswell Ramsey and husband, Bill; Sherry Lee Carswell Proffitt all of Morganton; brothers, Luther Carswell and Cecil Carswell both of Morganton; sisters, Orce Denton and Eula Smith both of Morganton; sister-in-law, Darfer Sailors of Lattimore, NC; grandchildren, Tammy Newton and husband, Randy; Jamie Brittain and wife, Angel; James Ramsey; Mellanie Ramos and husband Guillermo,; Chesley Austin and husband, Dean; Nicholas Profitt and fiance’, Haley Mull; great grandchildren, Chloe Newton, Joshua Harrison Brittain and Hannah Ramos.
Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, August 7, 2004 at Burkemont Baptist Church with Reverends Johnny Tiller and Larry Cline officiating. Entombment will follow the service at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home.
The family requests that you do a kind deed for another in the Memory of Mr. Carswell, also, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Mr. Pauls Zelmenis
Mr. Pauls Zelmenis, 94, of Morganton, died January 25, 2005 at the Hospice Shytle House in Valdese.
He is survived by his wife, Alina Bergs Zelmenis; step-son, Eric Devon of California; step-daughter, Daina Apple of Washington, DC and grandchildren, Almira, Maija and Tara.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Latvia. Entombment will be in Latvian Memorial Park in Elk Park, New York.

James Guy Greene
James Guy Greene, age 79, of 75 Georgia Ave, Marion, died Friday, June 24, 2005 in the McDowell Hospital.
Mr. Greene was born February 13, 1926 in Avery County to the late Baxter and Mary Ester Greene. He was a retired employee of Dixie Container and attended Grand View Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr. Greene are his wife, Josephine McKinney Greene and one sister, Blanche Walker of Black Mountain, NC.
Services will be held 3:00 o’clock Sunday, June 26, 2005 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Rev. Charles Dicks will officiate with burial following in Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Zellia Clarice Isaacs
Zellia Clarice Isaacs, 74, of Old Fort, died, Friday, January 17, 2003, at her residence. Born January 16, 1929, in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Joe Scott and Louise King Scott. She was a member of the AME Zion Methodist Church, Old Fort. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Isaacs.
Mrs.Isaacs is survived by a daughter, Bea Smith and husband, Carl, of Old Fort;
Three grandchildren, Letitia Lindsay & Latoya Lindsay, both of Old Fort and Norman Lindsay, Jr., of Morganton;
Also surviving are three great grandchildren, Heather Lindsay & Gary Young, Jr., of Old Fort and Steven Lindsay, of Morganton.
A private interment will be held Monday, January 20, 2003.
Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.
Ruby White Moore Pearlman
Ruby White Moore Pearlman, 81, of Catawba River Road, Old Fort, died Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at her home. She was a native of McDowell County and daughter of the late, William Leander White and Minnie Kelly White.
She was retired from Ridgecrest Conference Center.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Moore and second husband, Harry Pearlman; brothers, Charles Stacy White, Mack L. White, Cecil Andrew White, Jesse Willard White; William Pless White and sister, Georgia Mae White Brown.
She is survived by sons, Clark Stacy Moore of Shallott, NC; Wesley Edwin Moore of Winston-Salem; Michael Tereil Moore of Old Fort; daughter, Jeannette Moore Furan of Old Fort; 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, July 4, 2003 in the Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home in Old Fort. Interment will follow the service in Old Fort Cemetery. The Pastors Phillip Wishion, Arthur Gibbs, and John Baker will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home and other times at the Pearlman home on Catawba River Road.
