NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Lois R. Walker, 75, passed away August 1, 2000 at Riverside Regional Convalescent Center. She was a native of Charlotte, NC, and a resident of Newport News for several years.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Bill Martin of Newport News; a sister, Doris Sells of Schenectady, NY; and 2 grandchildren, Kristina and Emily Woolum of Newport News, VA. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at Sharon Memorial Park Cemetery in Charlotte, NC by the Rev. Peggy Bridgers. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Park Road Baptist Church. Altmeyer Funeral Home of Newport News, VA is handling the Arrangements.

Houck, Mitchell Frank
MT. ULLA - Mitchell Frank Houck, Sr., 88, died Friday, August 4. Memorials service is 11 a.m. Monday at Thyatira Presbyterian Church. Visitation is 2-4 p.m. Sunday at home of the son, Robert Houck.

MacDonald, Marie Masser
MOORESVILLE - Marie Masser MacDonald, 97, died August 4, 2000. Funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at Concordia Lutheran Church. Visitation is 6:30-8:00 p.m. tonight at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home.

Leazer, Martha Louise Poole
MOORESVILLE - Martha Louise Poole Leazer, 57, died Friday, August 4, 2000. Funeral is 11 a.m. Monday at West Corinth Baptist Church. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

Phillips, William Jason
MONROE - Mr. William Jason Phillips, 23, died Saturday, August 5, 2000. Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced later by the McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe.

MONROE - Latuan Lee, 16, died Saturday, August 5, 2000. Arrangements are incomplete at Grier Funeral Service of Monroe.

Little, Lois Morgan
MIDLAND - Lois Morgan Little, 86, of 12650 Hwy 601 South Midland, NC, died Thursday, August 3 at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte. The funeral was Saturday, 3pm, at Hartsell Chapel, Midland, N, with the Rev. Thomas Gibbs officiating. Interment was in First Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation was Friday, 7-8:30pm, at Hartsell Funeral Home; also handling arrangements.

She was born May 28, 1914 in Stanly County, NC to the late Drew Alexander Morgan and Arminta Janette Helms Morgan. She was the owner f Little's Florist, Midland. She was married icon to the late Howard `Bud' Little.

She is survived by her daughter, Margaret and husband Loyd Efird of Midland and Betty and husband C.P. Hatley of Concord, NC; sister, Annie Mae Carpenter of Mt. Pleasant; 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Scott Helms, Eric Twitty, Chris Hatley, Jeff Hatley, Jimmy Garrell, and Gary Foard.

The family will be at the home, 12650 Hwy 601, Midland, NC.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County, PO Box 1235 Concord, NC, 28025 or First Baptist Church Midland, 4720 Garmon Mill Road, Midland, NC 28107.

Graves, William Alfred
MCCOLL - William Alfred Graves, 72, died August 5, 2000. Funeral is 2 p.m. August 8, 2000 at McColl Pentecostal Holiness Church. Visitation is Monday from 7-9 p.m.

Ellis, Ruby Connor
MCCOLL - Mrs. Ruby Connor Ellis died August 4, 2000. Funeral is 2 p.m. Monday, August 7, 2000 at Eastside Baptist Church. Visitation is Sunday at Eastside Baptist Church from 7-9 p.m.

Barnes, Donald W.
Mr. Donald W. Barnes, 60, of Charlotte, died early Sunday morning surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held Monday at 8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Earl Pannell of Woodlawn Baptist Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until service time at 8 p.m. Interment will be held later at Oakdale Cemetery in Canton, GA.

Mr. Barnes was born February 23, 1940 in Fayetteville, AR to Dena Rodgers Barnes and the late L.C. Barnes. In 1970, he and his family moved to Charlotte where he was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church and had retired after 25 years of service with Westinghouse Electric Corp. Over the years, Don had coached basketball for the South Optimist and for Starclaire Athletic Association, and worked with our youth in Boy Scouts. He enjoyed fishing and had plans to travel during his retirement years.

Don lived his faith. He faced his four year struggle with cancer the way he lived his life, with optimism, hope and courage. Until his last days, he spread his love, hope and his smile with his family and friends.

His survivors in addition to his mother, Dena Barnes of Gainsville, GA include his wife of 39 years, Brenda Barnes of Charlotte; his son, Kyle Barnes of Charlotte; his daughter, Lori Barnes McKee and husband Matt of Macon, GA; his brother, Jimmy Barnes and wife Elaine of Gainsville, GA; and by his nephews, Mike and Joe Barnes.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to either Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or to Woodlawn Baptist Church, 4622 Nations Crossing Road, Charlotte, NC 28217.

Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home of Matthews.

Blackwell, Peggy
Peggy Blackwell, of Charlotte died August 6, 2000. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Beasley's Funeral Home.

Bowers, L.E.
L.E. Bowers, 82, of Charlotte, died Saturday, August 5, 2000, at Presbyterian Hospital.

Funeral is 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Reverend Brian Taule, officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the church.

Mr. Bowers was born in Lancaster, South Carolina, a son of the late Lovic Arthur Bowers and Sarah Elizabeth Cauthen. He had served in the Merchant Marine before and during World War II. Mr. Bowers had been a resident of Charlotte since 1924, was formerly a member of Tabernacle A.R.P. Church and a Charter Member of Calvary Baptist Church. He had retired from Mecklenburg County Department of Building Standards as a building inspector after 15 years of service. His wife, Ethelee Deese Bowers preceded him in death.

Surviving are, son, Donald Ezelle Bowers, of Charlotte, daughter, Kaye Bowers Sikes, of Matthews, grandson, Brian P. Pulley, of Matthews, granddaughter, Kimberly Pulley Pippin, of Goose Creek, SC, great grandsons, Josh Pulley, Ed Pippin and Cooper Pippin and brother, William Alvin Bowers, of Charlotte.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.

Cron, Martha Marie Potter
Mrs. Martha Marie Potter Cron, 53, of Charlotte passed away Sunday August 6, 2000 at Carolinas Medical Center. She was born December 14, 1946, in Carter County, TN. Martha was a member of Hunter Acres Baptist Church, and was a hard fighter who never gave up. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be 11 a.m. Tuesday August 8, 2000 at McEwen Funeral Service Derita Chapel officiated by The Reverend Bill Helms. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion U.M.C. cemetery in Cornelius, NC. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Survivors include mother, Laura Baker, of Elk Creek, VA; one son Bill McKinney of Lenoir, NC; one daughter Anona Lindley, (Robert) of Charlotte; two brothers Roger Potter, and Jim Potter, two sisters Louise Day, and Ethel Carmack, also two grandchildren William Carter, and Jeffrey Lindley. Memorials to: Hospice at CHarlotte 1420 E 7th St. Charlotte, NC 28204. Arrangements by McEwen Funeral Service Derita Chapel.

Helms, Master Jonathan Michael
Master Jonathan Michael Helms, 4, of Charlotte, died Sunday, August 6, 2000 at Northeast Medical Center. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Heritage Funeral Home.

Henderson, Elaine Wolfe
Elaine Wolfe Henderson, known affectionately to everyone as `Mama Lane' died August 6, 2000 following a nineteen month battle with cancer. She was born on September 24, 1947 in Charlotte and later graduating from West Meck High School in 1965 Elaine attended Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, NC. She was married icon to Guy Eugene Henderson on October 22, 1966. She was preceded in death by her Mother, Bernice Echerd Wolfe and is survived by her Father, Robert B. Wolfe, Jr. of Charlotte; (for whom she provided care following her Mother's death in 1996). Elaine is also survived by her sisters, Roberta Wolfe Moore of Charlotte and Shirley Wolfe Wingate of Simpsonville, SC; her daughter Noelle H. Singleton and her son-in-law Steven Singleton; and her son Christopher Guy Henderson, all of Charlotte; two grandchildren Victoria Elaine Singleton and Mary Claire Singleton; nieces and nephews, Melanie Moore Hord, Jennifer Moore McMullen, Jonathan Robert Wingate, and Caroline Ann Wingate. Finally her beloved pet, Lady.

Employed by Total Care Inc. of Charlotte for 18 years in various capacities and most recently as a systems trainer. Prior to returning to work in 1982, she was a homemaker. Elaine volunteered numerous hours over many years as a bookkeeper of McQuay Presbyterian Church located in Charlotte and continued as active member of her circle, both at McQuay and Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church's.

Elaine was a beloved wife, daughter, sister, Mother, friend, and devoted Grandmother whose courage, strength, and love will be sadly missed.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at Pleasant Grove Presbyterian with the Rev. Jeffrey Poinkston officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Church parlor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, 6701 Pleasant Grove Rd. Charlotte, NC 28216 or Hospice of Charlotte, 1420 East 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204.

Arrangements are in the care of Hankins and Whittington, Dilworth Chapel, 111 East Blvd.

Kellner, Ilda Irwin
Mrs. Ilda Irwin Kellner, of Charlotte, died Friday, August 4, 2000, at the Presbyterian Home at Sharon Towers after a long illness. Mrs. Kellner was 79.

Born September 21, 1920 at Oaktown, Indiana, Mrs. Kellner married icon the late Gerhard V. Kellner in 1942. She graduated from Beaver College, Jenkintown, PA with a degree in Home Economics which she taught in the Mendham, New Jersey Public Schools. Mrs. Kellner also served as a Girl Scout Leader and was an active church member.

Survivors include a brother, Forrest Irwin of Charlotte, a sister, Helen Shuster of Arlington, VA, a daughter, Elizabeth Samara of Dallas, TX, a son, Douglas Kellner of Richmond, VA and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Kellner will be buried beside her husband in Arlington National Cemetery.

Massey, Willie
Mr. Willie Massey of Charlotte, died recently. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2000 at Oaklawn Cemetery, Charlotte. King's Funeral Home, Charlotte, is serving the family.

Outen, Valarie
Valarie Outen of 1914 Brownstone St., Charlotte, died August 3, 2000. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Beasley Funeral Home.

Rhyne, Henry Carson
Mr. Henry Carson Rhyne, Sr., 86, of Charlotte died Friday, August 4, 2000 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Born January 21, 1914 in Mecklenburg County, NC, Mr. Rhyne was a son of the late Daniel Parks Rhyne and Allie Moody Rhyne. He was a graduate of Berryhill School and attended Rutherford College. Mr. Rhyne was a World War II, US Army veteran, having served in the Hawaiian Islands.

Mr. Rhyne was a lifelong member of Mulberrry Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder, member of Men's Bible Class, and was elected Elder Emeritus. He was a member of Optimist International and West Invester Club. Mr. Rhyne retired from Biggers Brothers after 34 years in sales.

Mr. Rhyne was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1941, Martha Ellen Rhyne, and two brothers, William Moody Rhyne and Daniel Parks Rhyne, Jr.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Coleen McWhirter Rhyne; three children, Dr. James Moody Rhyne and his wife, Anne of Statesville, Rev. Henry Carson Rhyne, Jr. of Richmond, VA, and Janis Rhyne Young and her husband, Ed of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Cherry Rhyne Johnson and her husband, Eddie of Statesville, Jason Parks Rhyne and his wife, Christi of Dallas, TX, Sheldon Todd Rhyne of Washington, DC, Allie Rhyne Young and Abby Thompson Young, both of Charlotte; and two great grandsons, James Rhyne Johnson and Edward Todd Johnson, both of Statesville.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Monday, August 7 at Mulberry Presbyterian Church, with the Reverends Dr. Roger Mackey and Paul Felker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to Mulberry Presbyterian Church, 5600 Tuckaseegee Road, Charlotte, NC 28208.

Vialet Robinson, of 6901 Rockwell Blvd, Charlotte, died August 6, 2000. Arrangements are incomplete at Beasley Funeral Home.

Simmons, Leonard M.
Leonard M. Simmons, of Charlotte, died Sunday, August 6, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center.

Among survivors are his wife, Vivian Simmons of Charlotte; son, Leonard M. Simmons, Jr.; daughters, Mary Jane Simmons and Ann Rager; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, August 7, 2000, at Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Road, Charlotte, with The Reverend John L. Alexander officiating. A funeral service and burial will be held in West Point, Mississippi.

Harry and Bryant Company is serving the family of Mr. Simmons.
