Eugene S. Kelley

The funeral will be held Friday for Eugene Stephen Kelley, 72, who died Tuesday (Aug. 10, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after three months of declining health.

Born Dec. 21, 1926, in Bronx, N.Y., he was a son of the late Eugene Stephen and Irene Cambell Kelley. Educated in the New York area Catholic schools, he had retired from the U.S. Postal Service. A World War ll veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served with the 69th Regiment aboard a supply ship in the South Pacific.

A lifelong Catholic and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for the past seven years, he was also a member of the Rufty-Holmes Senior Breakfast Club and the VFW.

Mr. Kelley is survived by a sister, Patricia Irene Maloney of Salisbury.

Services: Funeral Mass, 10 a.m. Friday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Jack Smyth. Burial in Salisbury National Cemetery.

Visitation: 9-9: 45 a.m. Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Robert L. Trantham

LEXINGTON - Robert L. “Bob” Trantham, 78, of 304 Swing Dairy Road, died Wednesday (Aug. 11, 1999) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Sept. 8, 1920, in Davidson County, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Claytie Lillian Cranford Trantham. He was a member of Cotton Grove United Methodist Church. He had retired from Henry-Fink Furniture.

A U.S. Army combat veteran of World War ll, he served in the Philippines, Manchuria and Korea. He was a member of VFW Post 3074 and Amvets Post 13.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Ann McNally Trantham.

Survivors include sons Tip Trantham, Linwood, and Bobby Trantham, Level Cross; daughter Ann T. Butler, Lexington; sister Frances Swicegood, Lexington; and three grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 6: 30 p.m. Friday, Cotton Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Ed Armfield. military rites by VFW Post 3074.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of a daughter at 174 William Lane.

Memorials: Cotton Grove United Methodist Church, 175 Jersey Church Road, Lexington, N. C. 27292.

Katelynn Rose Gore

Katelynn Rose Gore, daughter of Rick and Michelle Brown Gore, was dead at birth Tuesday (Aug. 10, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Survivors in addition to the parents include paternal grandmother Jayne Gore, China Grove; and maternal grandparents the Rev. and Mrs. Bill Tyson, Rock Hill, S.C.

Services: None.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

Linda S Hanes

LEXINGTON - Linda Sides Hanes, 55, of Sowers Road, died Tuesday (Aug. 10, 1999) at her home.

Born Jan. 25, 1944, in Hampton, Va., she was a daughter of Marvin Glover and Frances Lee Eidson Sides. A graduate of Salisbury High School and Davidson Community College, she also attended the University of North Carolina Charlotte. She received a bachelor’s degree in library arts and science and a master’s degree from UNC-Greensboro.

Employed by the Churchland elementary schools for 23 years as a library media coordinator, she also worked as a technologist specialist with the Rowan County schools for one year. A volunteer with Contact, she was a member of the North Carolina Education Association and Smith Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband David Earl Hanes; daughters Terri Cochrane, Lincolnton, and Cynthia Carol Humphlett, Oxford, England; brothers Terry Eugene Sides, Salisbury, and Jerry Lee Sides, Rockwell; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Smith Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ray Hooper.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday, in the church fellowship hall.

James Sutliff Dawson

The funeral is today for James “Jimmy” Sutliff Dawson, 50, who died Wednesday (Aug. 11, 1999).

A Rowan County native, Mr. Dawson was the son of the late Clayton Finnel and Clare McCanless Dawson.

Survivors include guardian and cousin Sarah McCanless Haarlow, Columbia, S.C.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. today, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Griffis, pastor, First United Methodist Church, Salisbury.

Memorials: Ridgeview Manor Nursing Home, 1645 Ridge Road, Hopkins, S.C. 29061; or RHA Health Services Inc., 211 Roseman Lane, Cleveland, N.C. 27013.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Rosie Krider Holmes

Rosie Lee Krider Holmes, 74, 675 Beagle Club Road, died Thursday (Aug. 12, 1999) at her residence after several months of declining health.

Born Nov. 3, 1924, in Rowan County, Mrs. Holmes was a daughter of Hezekiah Krider and the late Julia Thompson Krider.

Educated in the Rowan County schools, Mrs. Holmes had retired from Rowan Regional Medical Center. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, where she was active in the Senior Choir, the Gospel Choir, the Kitchen Committee and the Fannie Ford Missionary Circle.

Her husband, Quentin D. Holmes, died in 1991.

Survivors include sons Quentin J. Holmes, East Spencer, and Douglas Holmes, Salisbury; daughter Clara Tandy, Salisbury; brother Napoleon Krider, Granite Quarry; sister Margaret Ross, Salisbury; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, New Zion Baptist Church, Dunns Mountain Road, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Paul Jones, pastor. Burial, Providence AME Zion Church cemetery.

Visitation: The family will be at the home.

Eunice Mayfield Gilespie

SPENCER — Eunice Mayfield Gillespie, 89, Spencer Health Care, died Monday (Aug. 9, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Nov. 30, 1909, in Banks County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Mary Butler and Monroe Mayfield. A graduate of the Banks County public schools, she worked in the housekeeping department at a cotton mill. She was a member of Arnold’s Chapel CME Church, Franklin County, Ga.

She is survived by a son, Hoyt Gillespie, Thomasville, and one step-grandchild.

There will be no service and no visitation.

Herbert Harrington-Jones

Herbert Harrington-Jones, 51, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died Wednesday (Aug. 11, 1999) at Interfaith Medical Center, Brooklyn, N.Y. after one week of serious illness.

He was the brother of Suzette H. Davis of Salisbury.

Services: Memorial service Monday, Armstrong Funeral Home, Brooklyn, N.Y. Graveside service, Saturday (Aug. 21, 1999), Greenwood Cemetery, New Bern.

Flora Evans Hudson

FAYETTEVILLE - Flora Evans Hudson, 72, 1700 Pugh St., died Friday (Aug. 13, 1999) at her home.

Born in Spencer, Mrs. Hudson was preceded in death by husbands Robert Bailey Evans Jr. and James H. Hudson, former city attorney for Salisbury.

Survivors include sons Hunter McPherson Evans, Richard Lemmon Evans, and Robert Bailey Evans III, all of Fayetteville; daughter Mary Evans Newell, Maitland, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Services: Graveside service, 3 p.m. , In Home Cemetery at River Farm in Cedar Creek, the Evans family Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. James Welch, McPherson Presbyterian Church.

Visitation: 5-8 p.m. tonight, at the residence.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, 3131 Wrightsville Ave., Wilmington, N.C. 28403.

Mathey Stoner Wyatt

Mathey Stoner Wyatt, 98, of the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks, formerly of Atlanta, Ga., and Salisbury, died Saturday (Aug. 14, 1999) at the Lutheran Nursing Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born Nov. 14, 1900, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Moses Lawson and Margaret Melinda Huffman Stoner.

Educated in the Rowan County Schools, Mrs. Wyatt taught school early in her career and was a retired licensed practical nurse and homemaker. She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Atlanta and a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Salisbury.

Her husband, Matthew O. Wyatt, died in 1949.

Survivors include a son, Wallace Wayne Wyatt, Chattanooga, Tenn.; two daughters, Nevada W. Seawell, Atlanta, and Carolyn Hughey Fonseca, Pittsburgh, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gene Bost, campus chaplain of Trinity Oaks, and the Rev. Mary Peters, associate minister of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Memorials: Lutheran Nursing Home at Trinity Oaks, 820 Klumac Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28144.
