Virginia Newnam
PELHAM, N.C. — Virginia Blanche Alligood Newnam, 94, of 6009 Old U.S. 29, died Friday afternoon, Sept. 14, 2001, at the residence.
Born March 1, 1907, in Bath County, she was the daughter of David Fleming Alligood and Jennie Tate Alligood.
She was married
to John Walter Newnam Sr., who predeceased her May 25, 2001. She lived in Pelham most of her life and worked at Anderson Brothers Sewing Room in Danville for a number of years before retiring. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Whippoorwill Forrest in Pelham.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Newnam Sartin of Ruffin and two sons, John Walter Newnam Jr. of Cary and David Thomas Newnam of Pelham.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Grady Williams and the Rev. Wayne Sartin officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at he funeral home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials be made to Pelham Community Center, Pelham, N.C. 27311 or the Church of Christ, 278 Whippoorwill Lane, Pelham, N.C. 27311.

Kelly Paylor Jr.
ROXBORO, N.C. — Kelly Eugene Paylor, Jr., of 110 Mallard’s Way, Semora, NC, died Saturday, September 15, 2001 at Person Memorial Hospital, Roxboro, NC, where he had been hospitalized for five months.
Born November 10, 1929, in Roxboro, NC, he was the son of Lillian Bailey Paylor and Kelly E. Paylor, Sr.
He was married
to Sylvia Blackmon Paylor, who survives. Mr. Paylor was a lifelong resident of Person County and was graduated from Roxboro High School and attended Louisburg College.
He was the owner and operator of Kelly Paylor Wholesale for 40 years until his retirement in 1991, when he was employed part-time with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He served for 10 years in the National Guard Reserve and was a member of Milton United Methodist Church. Mr. Paylor will be remembered for his positive influence on the youth of Roxboro by coaching Midget League football for 21 years and teaching Sunday School at Long Memorial UMC. He was also a charter member of the Person County Bowling League.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 15 years, include his daughter, Sheryl Bradsher Paylor, Roxboro, NC, two sons, Kelly E. Paylor, III (Kep) and his wife, Lesa Turner Paylor of Raleigh, NC, and Austin Dane Paylor, of the home, a sister, Marion P. Perry and husband, Roy, Durham, NC, a brother, Charles Terry Paylor, Alton, Va., and 4 grandchildren, Kellie Elizabeth Harris, Zachary Lawrence Harris, Currin Adeline Paylor and Belle Bradsher Paylor.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Brooks and White Funeral Home Chapel, Roxboro, NC, with the Rev. John P. Upton officiating. Interment will follow at the family plot, Concord United Methodist Church, Roxboro, NC.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m., Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the home.
The family suggest memorials may be made to Milton United Methodist Church, c/o John P. Upton, P.O. Box 176, Milton, NC 27305.

Rudolph Dalton
PELHAM, N.C. — Rudolph Van Dalton, 68, of Dusty Lane, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after two years of declining health and one week in the hospital.
Born Nov. 11, 1932, in Danville, he was a son of John Dalton and Nellie Caviness Dalton.
He was married
to Mary Blanch Travis Dalton, who predeceased him March 30, 1993. He lived his life in Danville, where he was employed with James R. Evans and Son Construction prior to his retirement. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Dalton of Danville and Ricky Dalton of Henderson; one daughter, Peggy D. Rose of Wilmington; two brothers, Jack Dalton of Mississippi and Pete Dalton of Danville; three sisters, Lucille D. James of Stuart, Va., Lutrica Dalton of Danville and Gertrude Dalton of Mt. Airy; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by one brother, Roy Dalton.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Allen Holder officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. prior to the funeral Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence of his son, 2027 Hinesville Road in Danville.

Roy Farthing
BLANCH, N.C. — Roy Carlton Farthing, 85, of 245 Farthing Road, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after a period of declining health.
Born Jan. 29, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Edwin Farthing and Allie Davis Farthing.
He retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served with 439 Engineering Depot Company as a Grade A cook. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Yanceyville.
Survivors include five sisters, Sadie Saunders and Virginia Howard of Danville, Louise Tucker of Richmond, Ethel Wilkins of Blanch and Helen Ledford of Kernersville, and two brothers, William Edwin Farthing Jr. of High Point and Wilbur Farthing of Providence.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents, by Eldridge Farthing and Jewel Adkins.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Claude Harrelson and the Rev. Steve Carlton officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Harrelson Funeral Home in Yanceyville and other times at the residences of Wilbur Farthing, 152 Walters Mill Road, and Ethel Wilkins, 240 Farthing Road.

Edna Hilburn
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Edna Steele Hilburn, 85, of 583 Main St., died Sept. 25, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 5, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Steele and Nannie Custer Steele.
She was married
to Moncie Matherly, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker and a member of Community Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, JoAnne Wray of Blanch, N.C. and Peggy Campbell of Leasburg, N.C.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Community Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Marley Funeral Home and other times at the residence, Old Farm Apartments, 583 Main St., Apt. 4B.

Barbara E. Lockwood
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Barbara E. Lockwood, age 61, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, September 26, 2001 at her home after fighting a six-year courageous battle with breast cancer. Born February 22, 1940 in Danville, VA, she was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Margaret Smith Eanes. She was a graduate of George Washington High School and Averett Junior College, both in Danville. She earned a Bachelor Degree in Sociology from the College of William and Mary and a Masters Degree in Education from Appalachian State University. Mrs. Lockwood was employed with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System for twenty years and was a former First Union Bank Mortgage Loan Officer. She recently served as Chairperson of the Mountain Island Marine Commission for two years and was former Executive Director of the North Mecklenburg Chamber of Commerce. She served two terms on the Matthews Town Council and two terms as Mecklenburg County Commissioner of District #1. She was former Chairman of the Mecklenburg County Zoning Board of Adjustment, former Matthews Sanitation Commissioner and a former member of the Ad Hoc Highway 51 Study Group Appointed by the Planning Commission. Mrs. Lockwood was a former member of the United Way Board of Directors and a former member of University City United Methodist Church. She was a member of Matthews United Methodist Church where she had served as a member of the Administrative Board. A Funeral Service to Celebrate the Life of Barbara E. Lockwood will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, September 29, 2001 at Matthews United Methodist Church with The Reverend Dr. Kenneth Lyon officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn East Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM Friday at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road.
Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Robert A. Lockwood; two sons, Robert Brian Lockwood of Charlotte and Richard Barry Lockwood and his wife, Katherine, of Columbia, SC; two grandchildren whom she loved and cherished, grandson, Bailey Dent Lockwood and granddaughter, Eanes Holt Lockwood; brother, Edward Eanes of Richmond, VA; brother-in-law, Dean G. Lockwood and his wife, Nancy, of Naples, FL; and extended family, Buford and Barbara Goff of Columbia, SC and their children.
Bob Beaty, Buford Goff, Bill Hudgins, Dean Lockwood, Max Moore and Jet Raynor will serve as pallbearers. Floyd ‘Peanut’ Allen
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Floyd “Peanut” Coleman Allen, 67, of 430 Old N.C. Highway 86 North, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001.
Born Jan. 8, 1934, in Caswell County, he was a son of Myrtle Bowes Allen and Ollie Eugene Allen.
He was married
to Rebecca Rimmer Allen, who survives. He was a graduate of Walter Williams High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955, retired from the Caswell County Alcohol Beverage Control Board and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include one daughter, Rhonda Allen Holloway of Elon College; two brothers, Vernon Allen of Yanceyville and Woody Allen of Elon College; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Beulah Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug Jones officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Beulah Baptist Church, N.C. Highway 158 East in Yanceyville and other times at the residence.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Beulah Baptist Church Building Fund, c\o Phillis Bowes, 3078 N.C. Highway 119 North, Leasburg, N.C. 27291.

Lynn Brown
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —- Mrs. Lynn Holt Brown, age 41 of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born December 21, 1959 in Pittsylvania County to Wallace Warren and Lee Kahle Holt. Mrs. Brown was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby Brown and three children, Chelsea, Emily and Kahle Brown all of the home; parents, Wallace and Lee Holt of Danville, VA; one sister, Vickie Grimes and husband Larry of Phoenix, AZ; one brother, Michael Holt and wife Karen of Danville, VA and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, October 5, 2001 at Forsyth Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Reynolda Presbyterian Church by Rev. Alan Wright. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Reynolda Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 2200 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Always, whether in sickness or in health, Lynn’s faith made her “more than a conqueror” as she demonstrated the truth of God’s promise; “for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
Josef Kupit
MILTON, N.C. — Josef Bryant Faw Kupit, age 5, of 110 Holder Street, in Milton, died suddenly at his home Friday afternoon, September 28. He was born 6/3/96 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is survived by his mothers, Sharon Bryant Kupit and Jackie Lynn Faw. Also left to mourn his loss are three brothers, George, of the home; Maury (wife Melanie, son Griffin) of Durham; Anthony (wife Wanda, daughters Sinead, Rebekah and Tia) of Lawrenceville, Georgia; two sisters, Lisa of Durham; Lillian (husband Andy, son Forest, daughters Maryatt and Katie Belle), of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He was also well-loved by many doting aunts, uncles and friends. Josef loved listening to birds, hearing music, and laughing with his family and friends. Josef brought joy to everyone who knew him. A Celebration of Josef’s Life will be held Wednesday, October 3, at 2:00 p.m. at the Milton United Methodist Church. The Revs. Christine Oscar and John Upton officiating. REIDSVILLE, N.C. — Ruth Jeanette Lambert died October 1, 2001 at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
The service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Jones Cross Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.
She was born in Caswell County, NC and was affiliated with Jones Cross Missionary Baptist Church, Missionary Circle, Pride of Locust Hill #624 Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include Grandsons: Vernon Taylor (Ruby), Derrick Taylor and Kevin Taylor (Lisa), all of Elon, NC; Granddaughter: Tracy New Kirk (Robert), Centreville, VA; Brothers: William E. Enoch, Newport News, VA, Isiah Enoch (Virginia), Burlington, NC, Levi Jones, Greensboro, NC; Sisters: Fannie Jones, New York, Rosy Mae Jones, New York, Helen Adamsons, Greensboro, NC and 7 great-grandchildren.
The Wake will be Friday 7-8 pm; McLaurin Memorial Chapel.
Visitation will be at the home of Derrick Taylor, 3943 Cherry Grove Rd., Elon, NC.
