Joe H. Ervin

KANNAPOLIS — Joe H. Ervin, 75, 2363 Trail Ave., died Sunday (Aug. 8, 1999) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, after five days of serious illness.

Born Aug. 29, 1923, in Rowan County, Mr. Ervin was a son of the late Willie Lee and Scottie Hyde Ervin. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He had owned and operated Joe H. Ervin Grading Co. Inc., since 1960 and its subsidiaries, Survey Consultants P.A., Abbington Group Inc. and Ervin Materials, for many years.

Mr. Ervin had been a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church since 1952. He served two terms on the First Union National Bank board of directors and also served on the Enochville Fire Department board of directors.

Survivors include wife Gladys Sexton Ervin; son David Lee Ervin, Enochville community, China Grove; daughter Mrs. Harry L. (Beverly Jo Ervin) Barbee, Kannapolis; sisters Ruth Hampton, Raleigh, and Allie Beam, Kannapolis; and one grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Bethpage United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster and the Rev. Grady Barringer. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6: 30-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Trail Avenue.

Memorials: Bethpage United Methodist Church, 109 Fellowship Ave., Kannapolis, N.C. 28081.

M. Milton Morgan

The funeral will be Tuesday for M. Milton Morgan, 76, Salisbury, who died Saturday (Aug. 7, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Born Oct. 27, 1922, in Danville, Va., Mr. Morgan was a son of the late Latta S. and Beulah Albright Morgan. Educated in the Danville, Salisbury and Winston-Salem schools, he was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, Winston-Salem.

Mr. Morgan was a bookkeeper for Carolina Tractor and Equipment Co. in Salisbury and Charlotte for 35 years prior to his 1986 retirement. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the European and Pacific theaters on the USS Swannee.

He was a member of Maranatha Bible Church and a former member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was Sunday school superintendent and teacher, a deacon and a member of the Men’s Chorus and Gospel Quartet.

Survivors include wife Mary McCurdy “Pat” Morgan, whom he married Feb. 20, 1951; son M.M. “Skip” Morgan Jr., of the home; daughter Mrs. Gary W. (Libby M.) Dove, Blue Ridge, Va.; brother E. Hassell Morgan, Winston-Salem; sisters Mrs. C.E. (Phyllis) Dixson, Winston-Salem; and one grandson.

Services: 1: 30 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Carroll Robinson, pastor, Lebanon Lutheran Church, and a nephew, Dr. David F. Jarvis II, a United Methodist minister. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7: 30-9 tonight at the funeral home.

J.S. ‘Buddy’ Phelps Jr.

J.S. “Buddy” Phelps Jr., 71, Salisbury, died Monday (Aug. 9, 1999) at his home.

Born Feb. 18, 1928, in Salisbury, Mr. Phelps was a son of the late Junious Simeon and Sadie Lyerly Phelps. A graduate of Boyden High School, he was employed by American Bakeries in Salisbury and Charlotte for 40 years before retiring as a manager. He also worked part-time at Catawba Sav-Mor.

Mr. Phelps served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury.

His first wife, Betty Garrett Phelps, died June 18, 1981, and a son, W. Michael Phelps, died Nov. 11, 1979.

Survivors include wife Patricia Stanford Phelps; son Bruce H. Phelps, Morganton; sisters Norma P. Andrews, Salinas, Calif., and Frances P. Poole, Salisbury; and three granddaughters.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Phillip Cooley, pastor, First Baptist Church of Salisbury. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials: Humane Society of Rowan County, 112 W. Innes St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

Mary Ann Jones Leonard

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Thursday for Mary Ann Jones Leonard, 49, Hospital Street Extension, who died Saturday (Aug. 7, 1999) at her home.

Born Sept. 29, 1949, in Iredell County, Ms. Leonard was a daughter of Elsie Seamon Jones, Mocksville, and the late Charlie Franklin Jones. A Baptist, she had worked as a packer at Lee Jeans since 1991.

Survivors include son Ronald Wayne Leonard, Cooleemee; daughters Tina Ann and Sandra Renee Leonard, both of Mocksville, and Angela Denise Leonard, Hamptonville; brother Henry Lee Jones, Mocksville; sister Janet Faye Jones, Mocksville; and 11 grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Davie Funeral Service Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Phillip W. Park. Burial, Zion Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Lawrence Livengood

Lawrence Harding Livengood, 78, 1630 W. Ridge Road, died Monday (Aug. 9, 1999) at his home after four years of declining health.

Born Oct. 22, 1920, in Rowan County, Mr. Livengood was a son of the late Cletus Christian and Maggie Jane Myers Livengood. He was educated in the Woodleaf schools. A farmer, he worked for Cannon Mills, Plant 1, Kannapolis, for 45 years prior to his 1985 retirement. He was a member of Gay’s Chapel United Methodist Church and the Good Shepherd Sunday School Class.

A son, David Ray Livengood, died Sept. 14, 1966.

Survivors include wife Ola Mae White Livengood; daughters Mrs. Kenneth (Joyce Ann) Kyles and Mrs. Richard (Sandra) Callahan, both of Salisbury; brother Cecil Livengood, Salisbury; sister Dorothy Hopkins, Salisbury; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Gay’s Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Newman. The body will be placed in the church at 10: 30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Melvin ‘Mel’ Jordan Jr.

The funeral is today for Melvin Eugene “Mel” Jordan Jr., 55, 6355 Long Ferry Road, who died Saturday (Aug. 7, 1999) at his home after eight months of declining health.

Born April 11, 1944, in Bessemer, Ala., Mr. Jordan was a son of the late Melvin E. and Anne Bruns Jordan. Educated in the Bessemer, Ala., schools, he received his MBA from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. He was chairman of the board of Jordan Group Advertising Agency and Performance Marine of Salisbury. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Mocksville, and Salisbury Country Club. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served in Spain during the Vietname War.

Survivors include wife Patricia Barnhardt Jordan, whom he married Aug. 24, 1984; daughters Paige Holton, Raleigh, Jennifer Engel, Charlotte, Stephanie Jordan, ChapelHill, and Emily Jordan, Winston-Salem; and sister Rebecca Davis, Talladega, Ala.

Services: Memorial, 7 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: At the funeral home after the memorial service. At other times the family will be at the home on Long Ferry Road.

David Elwood Jones

David Elwood Jones, 66, Salisbury, died Monday (Aug. 9, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

Todd Thomas Kimball

The funeral will be Wednesday for Todd Thomas Kimball, 31, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Aug. 8, 1999) at his home.

Born Dec. 8, 1967, in Rowan County, Mr. Kimball was a son of Tommy and Carlene Yates Kimball of Salisbury. A 1986 graduate of East Rowan High School, he attended Pfeiffer College. He founded Kimball Screen Prints &Embroidery. A member of Wittenburg Lutheran Church, he was a former member of the council.

He was also a member of Keller Memorial Masonic Lodge 657 and received the degree of Super Excellent Master. This year’s York Rite Mason of the Year, he served on the Rowan County Shrine Club board of directors. A life member of Order of Corks Grand Council of Allied Masonic Degrees, he was also a member of the Winston-Salem Bodies of Scottish Rite, Salisbury York Rite and Rowan County Shrine Club.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include sister Michelle Kimball Clement, Salisbury; and grandparents John and Catherine Barringer Kimball, Salisbury.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Wittenburg Lutheran Church, Granite Quarry, conducted by Bob and Linda Voelker, co-pastors, the Rev. Allen Misenheimer, pastor, Grace Bible Church, and the Rev. John Woodard, pastor, Millers Lutheran Church, Hickory. Burial, church cemetery. Masonic rites by Keller Memorial Masonic Lodge 657.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell. At other times the family will be at the home.

James ‘Rick’ Weeks

KANNAPOLIS — James Richard “Rick” Weeks, 36, 7940 Howard Ave., died Sunday (Aug. 8, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, from injuries sustained in a tractor accident.

Born Oct. 9, 1962, in Battle Creek, Mich., Mr. Weeks was the son of Evelyn Ann Huntington Weeks, Kannapolis, and George Francis Weeks, who died in 1993. He owned and operated R.C.W. Express Freight Services Inc., and Weeks Vending Inc. with his wife, Cindy Freeze Weeks. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1980 -1984 and was stationed in England for two years. He was a member of Live to Ride, Ride to Live.

Survivors, in addition to his mother and wife, include son Michael McHugh Weeks, U.S. Air Force; daughter Angela Measmer, of the home; and brothers Joseph and Gary Weeks, both of Battle Creek, Mich.

Services: 8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. R.J. Hammond. Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove. military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Howard Avenue.

Memorials: Special Olympics of North Carolina, 220 Fayetteville St., Suite 200, Raleigh, N.C. 27601.

Milton Bernard Angel

WINSTON-SALEM - Milton Bernard Angel, 79, 114 Flintfield Drive, father of Bernice Angel Honeycutt, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Aug. 10, 1999) at his home.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel, Clemmons.

Visitation: 7: 30-8: 30 tonight, Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

Revie Jordan Addison, 105

KANNAPOLIS - The funeral will be Friday for Revie Jordan Addison, 105, All Saints Nursing Home, Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Kannapolis and Mooresville, who died Sunday (Aug. 8, 1999) at the nursing home.

Born May 15, 1894, in Franklin County, Ga., Mrs. Addison was a daughter of the late John Walton and Fannie Beatenbough Jordan. She retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1 washcloth department.

Survivors include daughters Monteen Raper, Mooresville, and Mavourneen "Candy" Hawkins, Jacksonville, Fla.; sister Casey Roach, Kannapolis; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
