Bryan Rogers
SALISBURY, N.C. — Bryan Jones Rogers, 83, formerly of Blairs and Danville, Va. died on Thursday evening August 30, 2001 at the Lutheran Home in Salisbury, N.C. after a long illness. He was a loving husband, devoted father and compassionate friend.
The family will receive condolences at the home of Bryan’s sister, Glenn Yates, at 107 Bent Creek, Danville, Va. beginning Saturday morning, September 1st. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 2nd at Chestnut Level Baptist Church where Bryan was a deacon, teacher and superintendent of Sunday School, and member of the choir. The Reverend Julian Griffin will officiate. Burial will follow at Highland Burial Park in Danville. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 1st from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham.
A native of Dry Fork, Bryan was born on March 30, 1918, to the late Munford and Dora Mays Rogers. He graduated from Spring Garden School and Hargrave Military Academy, and attended Capital University in Ohio before joining the United States Army during World War II. While serving as the training commander for the Army Nurses Corp at Fort Devens he met his wife, Natalie Stevens, from Bangor, Maine. Following active duty, Bryan remained in the Army Reserves for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Bryan ran an insurance agency in Ohio before settling on the family farm in Blairs. He and his brothers, Orlin and Aylor, owned and operated Rogers Restaurant and Rogers Men’s Shop in Danville during the 1950’s and 1960’s in addition to farming. Bryan was involved in numerous community organizations, including the Pittsylvania County Semi-Pro Baseball League, where he was a director and league president. He was also a scout for the Cincinnati Reds for almost 20 years.
In 1959 Bryan joined International Minerals and Chemicals (IMC) where he was a sales representative and regional manager in Winston Salem, N.C., Hartsville, S.C. and Atlanta, Georgia, before retiring to Danville. He later lived in Tampa, Florida and Hartsville before moving to the Trinity Oaks Retirement Community in Salisbury, N.C.
A dedicated Christian and inspirational leader, Bryan had a wonderful sense of humor and great patience. He was kind and generous to everyone he met. In addition to baseball, he loved golf, and was thrilled to score a hole-in-one shortly after his seventy-first birthday.
Bryan leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Natalie Stevens Rogers of Salisbury, N.C., four daughters, Nora Lea Reefe and husband Ed of Boca Grande, Florida and Linville, N.C.; Kate Smith and husband Frasier of Marietta, Georgia; Betsy Young and husband Greg of Midlothian, Virginia; and Susan Kelley and husband Randy of Charlotte, N.C.; and one son, Bryan Stuart Rogers of Tampa, Florida; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Survivors also include sisters Anna Moore of Callands, Va. and Glenn Yates of Danville, and brothers Aylor Rogers of Blairs, and Lynn Rogers of Seneca, S.C. Sisters Susie Barbie of Columbus, Ohio and Nellie Owen of Blairs and brothers Fitzhugh Rogers of Williamsburg, Va. and Orlin Rogers of Blairs preceded him in death.

Joseph Blankenship
PELHAM, N.C. — Joseph F. Blankenship, 55, of 15 Oak Forest Drive, died Friday afternoon, Sept. 7, 2001, at the Person County Memorial Hospital in Roxboro.
Born July 5, 1946, in Yorkshire, he was a son of Maurice Blankenship and Virginia Simpson McCarty.
He was married
to Shirley Ann Crawford Blankenship, who survives. He lived in Pelham for the past five years after spending most of his life in Manasssas. He was a painter prior to becoming disabled.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include his stepfather, Francis McCarty of Manassas; two sons, Joseph Blankenship Jr. of Haymarket and Stephen Blankenship of Danville; two daughters, Betty Smith of Tennessee and Virginia Piercey of Virginia Beach; four brothers, Jimmy McCarty of Greensboro, N.C., Johnny McCarty and Jeff McCarty, both of Mannassas and Tommy McCarty of Culpepper; five sisters, Lea Collins, Roxanne Trip and Susan Justice, all of Manassas, Jenny Broughman of Covington and Linda McCarty of Haymarket; and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sheffield Cemetery in Randleman, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Mamie Melton
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Mamie Crowe Melton, 83, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Hospice-Beacon Place after four months of declining health.
Born Dec. 10, 1917, in Rutherfordton County, she was a daughter of Abe and Melissa Crowe.
She was married
to Joseph Glenn Melton, who predeceased her. She was a member of Rocky Knoll Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Paul D. Melton of Danville, Va. and two grandsons.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by one daughter, Sheila Melton Teal.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Street Chapel. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Rocky Knoll Baptist Church, 501 Kirkland St., Greensboro, N.C. 27406 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, Beacon Place, 2502 Summit Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27401.

Elwood Clayton
RUFFIN, N.C. — Elwood Harvey Clayton, 85, of 10684 Park Springs Road, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at the residence after a period of declining health.
Born April 5, 1916, in Caswell County, he was the son of George Lee and Leona Moorefield Clayton.
He was married
to Louise Woody Clayton, who predeceased him Feb. 19, 1992. He was a graduate of Barlett-Yancey High School and was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church where he served as Clerk of Sessions and Ruling Elder and Deacon. He was a Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No. 32 of Bethesda Church. He was sales manager of Cole Chevrolet of Yanceyville for 42 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Louise Clayton of Ruffin; three sisters, Ercell Satterfield of Ruffin, Geneva Williamson and Helen Somer, both of Reidsville and one brother, Julius Lee Clayton of Providence.
He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and wife, by one sister, Leona C. Cobb.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethesda Presbyterian Church with the Rev. George McDowell III and the Rev. Cleveland Duke officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Harrelson Funeral Home in Yanceyville and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, c/o William I. Reagan, 1870 Ashland Road, Ruffin, NC 27326.

Jerry Cook
EDEN, N.C. — Jerry Wayne Cook, of 1913 4th Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at the residence after several years of declining health..
Born Oct. 29, 1944, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Shirley Owen Cook, who survives, and Gilbert Giles Cook Sr.
He was married
to Emmy Ard Cook, who survives. He lived in Danville, Va., before moving to Eden 15 years ago and self-employed as a logger. He was a member of Christ Fellowship Church in Eden.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Eden, include three daughters, Lisa Cook Olson of Boston, Mass., Lou Ann Ard Scott of Eden and Bliss Ard Callaway of West Virginia; two sisters, Linda Cook Taylor and Louise Cook Goodman, both of Danville; two brothers, Gilbert G. Cooke Jr. “Cookie“ and Johnny Lee Cook, both of Danville, and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by one brother, James Thomas Cook Sr. of Danville.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Fellowship Church, Highway 14, Eden, with the Rev. Ron Walker and the Rev. Samuel L. Greason officiating. Interment will follow at Dan View Cemetery in Eden.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Fellowship Church and other times at the residence of his mother, 465 Martin Road in Danville.

Kermit Graves
NEW BERN, N.C. — Kermit Boyd Graves, 55, of 2402 F Meadowbrook Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at the residence.
Born Dec. 19, 1945, in Danville, he was the son of Gertrude Hutcherson Graves Thomas, who survives, and Clyde S. Graves.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served from 1960-1964. He lived in New Bern for the past 10 years and spent most of his life in Danville. He was sales manager for WWNB radio in New Bern and was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his mother of Danville.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his mother, 137 Naples St.

Lethanel Gwynn
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. —Lethanel Holloway Gwynn, of 5478 Highway 86 North, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at the Brian Center Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 9, 1921, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Americus Holloway and Ducy Henderson.
She was married
to Richard Gwynn Sr., who predeceased her. She was a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church, where she served as Mother of the Church and was a member of the Missionary Circle, Pastor Aid and Senior Choir where she was treasurer for 46 years. She worked in the tobacco factory for many years and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, George Nathan Gwynn of Yanceyville; three daughters, Nancy G. Bigelow and Toni G. Madden, both of Yanceyville and Beverly W. Jones of Danville; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents and husband, by two son, Richard Gwynn Jr. and Henry Thomas Gwynn; one brother, Irvin Neal Holloway and four sisters, Nettie Holloway, Inez Long, Clevie D. Holloway and Mollie H. McIver.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Sassafras Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Bigelow officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will be at the residence.

Jack Hobbs Sr.
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Jack Clinton Hobbs Sr., 54, of 387 New Walters Mill Road, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center after four months of declining health and one week at the hospital.
Born Oct. 2, 1946, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Johnny Clinton Hobbs and Ruth Boswell Hobbs, who survives.
He was formerly married
to Doris Welch Hobbs of Yanceyville, who survives. He lived most of his life in Providence and was a self-employed carpenter and later was in well drilling. He was a member of Community Baptist Church of Yanceyville.
Survivors include three daughters, Naomi Heath of Providence, and Angela Hobbs and Denise Ware, both of Yanceyville; one son, Jack Clinton Hobbs Jr. of Yanceyville; three sisters, Clarice Wade of Danville, Va., Priscilla Mitchell of Providence and Rachel Barker of Brosville, Va., and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Community Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery in Yanceyville.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Priscilla Mitchell, 439 Walters Mill Road in Providence.

Johnny Journigan
PLEASANT GARDEN, N.C. — Johnny Alfred Journigan, 50, of 2710 Minden Road, died suddenly Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital Emergency Department in Greensboro.
Born April 27, 1951, in Danville, he was a son of Alberta “Pete” Fuller Journigan, who survives, and Alfred William “Whitey” Journigan.
He had lived most of is life in Danville and Kill Devil Hills prior to moving to Pleasant Garden to live for the past 10 years. He was employed by Carolina Restoration in Greensboro as a construction foreman and was a former member of Temple Baptist Church, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Greensboro and a member of the National Rifle Association. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Danville, include two daughters, Whitney Victoria Journigan of Pleasant Grove and Larken Carol Journigan of Danville and one sister, Patsy Journigan Hazelwood of Danville.
He was predeceased, in addition to his father, by one brother, Danny James “Duncan” Journigan.
The memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with the Rev. R.J. Barber Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the residence of his mother, 126 King St. in Danville.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541.
