Kirby Neal Smith
The funeral will be Saturday for Kirby Neal Smith, 78, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Aug. 5, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born July 24, 1921, in Marmet, W.Va., Mr. Smith was a son of the late Clyde and Fannie Sloan Smith. The Virginia State Singles Tennis champion in 1936, he attended the Kings Point U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and served with the Merchant Marines during World War II.
He had retired from the United States Steamship Lines Co. after 41 years as a marine engineer. A former Salisbury Jaycee, he was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Salisbury Lions Club and the Salisbury Elks Lodge.
His first wife, Polly L. Smith, preceded him in death.
Survivors include wife Gloria Bearden Smith; sons Clay K., Greg L. and Neal C. Smith, all of Salisbury; brother Alvin Smith, Vienna, Va.; and five grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Thomas L. Griffis, pastor, First United Methodist Church, and Dr. K.Tommy Nickerson, Charleston, S.C. The body was to be cremated.
Visitation: 7-8: 30 tonight at the funeral home.

Vera Brinkley
HUNERSVILLE — Vera Brinkley, 97, Huntersville Oaks Nursing Home, Huntersville, died Friday (Aug. 6, 1999).
Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.
Gaynelle Price Pressley
KANNAPOLIS — Gaynelle Price Pressley, 80, 614 N. Walnut St., died Thursday (Aug. 5, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Dec. 8, 1918, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Pressley was a daughter of the late Bartley T. and Mary Essie Nash Price. She was a lifelong member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church.
Survivors include husband Marvin R. Pressley; and sister Ernestine P. DeMarcus, Kannapolis.
Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Steve Autrey. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Walnut Street.

Marvin Leo Parker
ALBEMARLE — Marvin Leo Parker, 85, 24624 Bost Road, died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 1999) at Community Hospital, Springfield, Ohio.
Born June 10, 1914, in Stanly County, Mr. Parker was a son of the late William Thomas and Inez Huneycutt Parker. He had retired as a regional supervisor with Service Distributing Co. Inc. He was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served in the Pacific during World War II.
His wife, Elizabeth Hall Whitlock Parker, died June 7, 1981,
Survivors include son Eugene W. Parker, Ocean Isle Beach; daughter Diane P. Little, Springfield, Ohio; brothers Cletus, Craven and Edward Parker, all of Albemarle; sisters Dorothy Hatley and Estelle Lambert, both of Albemarle; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Pine Grove United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Curran Welch and the Rev. Martha Welch. Burial, church cemetery. military rites by Stanly County DAV.
Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Bost Road.
George Floyd Perry
George Floyd Perry, 64, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 1999) at his home.
Born March 20, 1935, in Rowan County, he was reared by Henry and Melrose Nix. Educated in the Rowan County and Georgia schools, he had retired after 32 years with Fiber Industries, now KoSa.A Lutheran, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include wife Peggy Gaskey Perry, whom he married July 1, 1956; daughter Sherry Milam, Sutherlin, Va.; brothers Ronnie McClure, Rockwell, and Sonny Perry, Griffin, Pa.; sister Yvonne Perry, Atlanta; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: Entombment, 4 p.m. Friday, Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum, conducted by the Rev. Marcus B. Hovis III, pastor, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Visitation: None.

Mary Barnhardt Flowe
MOUNT PLEASANT - Mary Barnhardt Flowe, 97, 11731 Highway 49 North, died Friday (Aug. 6, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Nov. 11, 1901, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Flowe was a daughter of the late Betty Isenhour and Dolph Barnhardt. She had retired from Kerr Bleachery.
Her husband, Theodore C. Flowe, died July 7, 1953.
Survivors include daughter Lena Hathcock, Rockwell; sons Robert Flowe, Mount Pleasant, and Ralph Flowe, Concord; brothers Frank Barnhardt, Mount Pleasant, and Martin Barnhardt, Detroit, Mich.; sisters Cora Barnhardt, Mount Pleasant, and Hilda Mae Safrit and Margaret Eudy, both of Rockwell; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Louise Trexler Kepley
ALBEMARLE - Louise Virginia Trexler Kepley, 94, 2311 W. Main St., died Thursday (Aug. 5, 1999) at The Laurels of Salisbury.
Born Jan. 23, 1905, in the Liberty community (Rowan County), Mrs. Kepley was a daughter of the late Amanda Caroline Eagle and Phoenix Nixon Trexler. A retired seamstress, she was last employed with American & Efird Mills.
Her husband, John Henry Kepley, died in 1983. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Pauline Kepley, and a son, Harold Kepley.
Survivors include sons Van D. Kepley, Albemarle, and Vernon R. Kepley; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

‘Peggy’ Floyd Shumaker
MOORESVILLE - Margaret “Peggy” Ann Floyd Shumaker, 63, Liberty Street, died Thursday (Aug. 5, 1999) at Mercy Hospital, Charlotte.
Born Dec. 14, 1935, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Shumaker was a daughter of the late Margaret Morris and Robert Lawrence Floyd. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include husband Kenneth Otto Shumaker; sons Billy G. Parker Jr. and Bobby D. Parker, both of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Larry Parker, Woodbridge, Va.; daughter Durand P. Edwards, Mooresville; sister Mary F. Stultz, Mount Ulla; three stepchildren; eight grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

Charlie Bob King
STATESVILLE - Charles Bob King, 82, 2413 S. Chipley Ford Road, died Friday (Aug. 6, 1999) at Wake Forest University Medical Center, Winston-Salem, following a brief illness.
Born Aug. 30, 1916, in Iredell County, Mr. King was a son of the late Sarah Watts and Henry Clay King. Educated at Scotts School, he was a member of First ARP Church of Statesville.
From 1942 to 1952, Mr. King was an Iredell County deputy sheriff. He later worked for Biltmore Dairies and Gilliam Furniture Co.
Survivors include wife Iva Lee Moxley King; sons Larry M. King, Statesville, and Steve King, Woodleaf; brother Ray W. King, Statesville; sisters Katy K. Barker, Jefferson, Mary K. Sherrill, Nancy K. Pearson and Katherine K. Kasey, all of Statesville, Addie K. Jenkins, Warrenton, ; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert E. Sherer. Burial, at a later date.
Visitation: The families will be assembled at their respective homes and will receive friends at Nicholson Funeral Home following the memorial service.

‘Johnny’ Lewis Harwood
STANFIELD - John “Johnny” Lewis Harwood, 56, 21798 Joy Road, died Friday (Aug. 6, 1999) at his residence.
Born Feb. 12, 1943, in Stanly County, Mr. Harwood was a son of the late Evelyn Allmon and Absalom “Ab” Harwood. Mr. Harwood was a service technician with Maxson and Associates.
Survivors include wife Rachel Florence Harwood; daughters Lynn Nance, Concord, Dannette Huneycutt, Stanfield, and Penny Simpson, Ansonville; brother Harold “Abbie” Harwood, Locust; and sisters Corky Edwards, Wingate, and Rose Mullins, Locust.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Oakboro United Methodist Church, Oakboro, conducted by the Rev. Leslee Lyndon. Burial, Jerusalem Primative Baptist Church, Polkton.
