Charlotte Beggarly Gatewood
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Charlotte Beggarly Gatewood, age 63, of 678 Walters Mill Road, Providence, N.C. died Sunday morning September 17, 2000 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C. after three months of declining health.
Mrs. Gatewood was born in Pittsylvania County on July 31, 1937, a daughter of the late Johnnie M. Beggarly and Myrtle Brown Beggarly.
She was married
to William Voss Gatewood Jr., who died February 26, 1995.
Mrs. Gatewood had spent most of her life in Danville and Caswell County, N.C. She retired in March of from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., and was a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons: Richard Lee Doss and daughter-in-law, Penny L. Doss of Providence, N.C., and James Vincent Doss III of Danville, three brothers: Darden Beggarly and sister-in-law, Pat Beggarly, and Barry Beggarly and sister-in-law, Janie Beggarly all of Pelham, N.C., and David Beggarly and sister-in-law, Mary Beggarly of Providence, N.C., and three sisters: Joyce Perdue and brother-in-law, Larry Perdue, and Edith Beggarly all of Danville, and Faye Stallings and brother-in-law, John Stallings of Petersburg, and sister-in-law: Ann Page Astin and her husband Mike Astin of Roanoke, and four grandchildren: Megan Doss, Kelley Doss and Adam Doss, all of Providence, N.C., and Jamie Doss of Brosville, and many nieces and nephews and a dear friend Kay Woodall of Danville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gilmore Hundley.
Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m., and at the residence at other times.
Bessie Riddle
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Bessie Crumpton Hancock Riddle, 85, of 2303 Bracy Ridge Road died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at Wesley Long Nursing & Rehab Center, Jamestown, N.C.
Born May 31, 1915, in Pelham, she was the daughter of William C. Crumpton and Ida Durham Crumpton.
She was first married
to Kasper Hancock, who predeceased her and later married
to the Rev. Samuel Riddle who also predeceased her.
She spent most of her life in Danville where she was a homemaker and a member of Arlington Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby Hancock of Greensboro and Ray Hancock of Charlotte; one daughter, Judy Wyatt of Danville; one brother, Bill Crumpton of Danville; one sister, Caroline Crumpton of Danville; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her first and second husbands, she was predeceased by a son, Jimmy Hancock.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Samuel Greeson officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Judy Wyatt, 1543, Kemper Road Ext.
John Thomas Burton
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — John Thomas Burton, 77 of 2975 US Hwy. 158 West Yanceyville died Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at his residence.
He was born in Caswell County, June 20, 1923, the son of Robert Burton and Peal Barnett Burton.
He was employed by Associated Transport for 16 years, retired from Caswell County ABC Board, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of VFW Post 7316.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Jones Lunsford Burton and parents.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Charles and Kim Watson, two grandsons, Chris and Kyle Watson all of West Yanceyville; three sisters, Mrs. Frances B. Riggs, Mrs. Hallie B. Jones and Miss Sallie Burton, one brother, Robert B. Burton, Jr. all of Burlington.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2000 at Cooper Cemetery with military rites by Honor Guard, B.Y.S.H.-N.J.-R.O.T.C; at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Bob Hillman officiating. The cemetery is located off the Ridgeville Road Prospect Hill.
Pallbearers are members of V.F.W. Post 7316, Brad White, Charlie Guthrie, Hoyt Moore, Wilbur Page, Ralph Payne and Jimmy Harrelson.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Marley Funeral Home.

Eva Craddock
EDEN, N.C. — Eva Fisher Craddock, 85, of 226 North Oakland Ave. died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at the Brian Center.
She was born in Rocky Mount, Va.
She was a member of the Salvation Army and she attended Tri-City Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include five daughters, Edith Dillon and Lizzie Hamm, both of Eden; Peggy Dillon and Priscilla Wagoner, both of Danville, Va. and Mary Leigh Arnold of Ridgeway, Va.; four sons, Jack Holly of Ridgeway, Va.; Rufus Hamm of Ennice; Billy Hamm of Mayodan and Joseph Hamm of Churchville, Md.; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held 4 p.m. Friday, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow at White’s Chapel Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Fair Funeral Home.
Earline Lea
BLANCHE, N.C. — Earline “Earl” Lea, 79, of 2164 Files Road died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Triangle Hospice at the Meadowlands, Hillsborough.
Born May 7, 1921, in Caswell County, he was a son of Weldon Lea and Maude Long Lea.
He was married
to Sylvan Mitchell Lea, who predeceased him.
Survivors include eight daughters, Minnie Coleman and Sylvia Lea of Danville, Va., Viola Graves of Suitland, Md., Virginia Williams and Elaine Freeman of Raleigh, Helen Patterson of Washington, D.C., Peggy Watts of Reidsville and Vanessa Richardson of Charlotte; three sons, Anthony Lea of Greensboro, Alphonzo Lea of High Point and Earl Lea of Durham and two sisters, Salley Johnson of Trenton, N.J. and Alease Venable of Durham.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Yanceyville, with the Rev. Billy Inge officiating. Interment will follow at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Semora.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Minnie Coleman, 537 Rosemary Lane, Danville, Va. and Sylvia Lea, 627 Arnett Blvd., Apt. 14, Danville, Va.

Oscar Vaughn
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — Oscar Alexander Vaughn of Marshall Graves Road died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center, after an extended illness.
Born May 20, 1921, in Caswell County, he was the son of Lewis Vaughn and Minnie Watlington Vaughn.
He was married
to Annie Ruth Williamson, who predeceased him, he later married
Gladys Wimple, who also predeceased him.
He was a graduate of Caswell County Training School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Graves Chapel Baptist Church and a retired employee of the city of Burlington.
Survivors include one son, Rev. Larry D. Vaughn of Oxon Hill, Md.; two daughters, Barbara Vaughn and Shirley Wright both of Suitland, Md.; one stepson, Clifton Williamson of Danville, Va.; four stepdaughters, Christine Alestock of Silver Spring, Md., Margo Crisp of Mebane, Linda Fuller of Yanceyville and Arnetta Anthony of Raleigh; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, at Graves Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Walker officiating. Military rites will be performed by, American Legion Post 29, Danville, Va.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m Saturday, at Fulton Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of his niece, Esther Watlington at 3027 Stoney Creek School Road in Reidsville.
Mary Jeffress Pulliam
MILTON, N.C. — Mary Jeffress Pulliam, 82, of 56, Fairveiw Dr., died Friday, November 24, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born in Caswell Co., she was a daughter of the late Hunt and Pattie Morton Jeffress and wife of the late Bedford William Pulliam. She retired from Milton Manufacturing also having worked at Dan River Mills and Milton Tire Service. She was a member of Milton United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Pulliam is survived by a daughter, Patsy P. Yarbrough; one sister, Emily Tosh, of Richmond, Va.; two grandchildren, Susan Turner, of Elon College, and Jim Yarbrough, Jr., of Blanch; three great-grandchildren, Rick Jackson, Madison Belle Turner, and Brandon William Yarbrough.
A memorial service will be held 2PM Monday at the Milton Cedars Cemetery by the Rev. John Upton. Visistation will be Sunday at the home of her daughter, 12018 Broad St., Milton.

William Allen
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. — William Carlton Allen, 55, of 5267 N.C. Hwy. 86 N. died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va.
Born Sept. 23, 1945, in Caswell County, he was a son of Wilbert Armstead Allen and Mary Sue Smith Allen.
He was married
to Mamie Saunders Allen, who survives.
He was a former employee of Hanover Mills, Yanceyville, and was later employed by Wood Fiber Industries, Danville, where he was a forklift driver. He was a member of River Zion Baptist Church, Blanch.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Kimberly Renee Allen Pierce of Durham; one son, William Brad Allen of Yanceyville; three brothers, Alexander Allen of Blanch, Oscar Allen and James Allen, both of Yanceyville; three sisters, Geneva Allen Greene of Yanceyville, Mary Elizabeth Allen Ross and Lois Virginia Allen Pierce, both of Philadelphia, Pa. and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at River Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stephen Tyrone Thornton officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence. There will be a viewing 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel.
Cathy Griffith
PROVIDENCE, N.C. — Cathy Ophelia Jeffries Griffith, 45, of 108 Slade Court died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at her residence.
Born Jan. 25, 1955, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Isaac Jeffries and Catherine Long Jeffries.
She was employed as a clerk at the Caswell Family Violence Office. She was a member of Pearson Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she was a member of Senior Choir, Usher Board, Stewardess Board, Missionary Circle, the Voices of Praises and the Sunday School.
Survivors include two sons, Shawn L. Griffith of Providence and Jerome Griffith Tatlor of Dayton, Ohio.
She was predeceased by one brother, Larry Jeffries.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Pearson Chapel A.M.E. Church, with the Rev. George Turner officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Frances Barker
SEMORA, N.C. — Frances Warren Barker, 69, of 4852 Hwy. 57 died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Sommerset, South Boston, Va.
Born Dec. 8, 1931, in Halifax County, Va., she was a daughter of Arthur Clyde Warren and Mildred Talbott Warren.
She was married
to William Nelson Barker, who predeceased her.
She worked as an instructor at Vocational Trade of Alamance and Caswell Counties.
She was a member of Conley United Methodist Church, Semora.
Survivors include one daughter, Rita B. Wilkerson of Summerville, S.C.; three sisters, Priscilla W. Franklin and Jennifer W. Gregory, both of South Boston, Carol W. Thomas of Halifax and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by three daughters, Pamela Barker, Valerie Barker and Angela Barker and three sisters, Elwyn W. Owen, Edith W. Eck and Barbara A. Warren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Lebanon Christian Church, Semora. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
