Leland DeHart
PELHAM, N.C. - Leland Lewis "Baldy" DeHart, 78, of 176 Maple Lane, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center of four years of declining health and two weeks of serious condition.
Born July 9, 1921, in Danville, Va., he was the son of Joseph Preston DeHart and Nannie Sigmon DeHart.
He married
Mary "Maggie" Jones DeHart, who predeceased him on Jan. 21, 1994. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany during WWII. He was employed with Dan River in the card room, Simmons Amusement, and the Dr. Pepper Bottling Co. as a route salesman, attended Full Gospel Fellowship Church, and was a member of the American Legion Post 1097 and the VFW Post 647.
Survivors include three daughters, Sue Slaughter, Linda Ketchum and Brenda Jackson Warren, all of Danville; two sisters, Goldie Baker of Summerfield, N.C., and Emma Pillow of Danville; four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was also predeceased by a brother, Russell DeHart, and one great- grandson.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Ewing officiating. Interment will follow at Schoolfield Cemetery where military honors will be performed by American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, from 7-8:30 p.m., and other times at the residence.

Myrtle King
RUFFIN, N.C. - Myrtle King, 76, died December 30, 1999, at her home after five years of declining health.
Born January 1, 1923, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Annie Farrish and Julius C. King.
Myrtle served humanity well, earned everything she got out of life - (never smoked), never a burden, always a smiling pleasure.
Survivors include: one brother, Charlie "Clayton" King, of the home; four sisters, Madeline Clark, of the home; Annette Henderson, Pelham, NC, Pansy Foster, Yanceyville, NC and Gracie King, of the home. Preceded her in death, one sister, Daisy Parker and one brother, Wilbur King.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, at New Ephesus Baptist Church, Ruffin, N.C., with interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 409 S. Main Street, Reidsville, NC or New Ephesus Baptist Church, 8939 Hwy 158, Ruffin, NC. McLaurin Funeral Home, Reidsville, NC is in charge of arrangements.
Cynthia Lee Arthur
DURHAM, N.C. - Cynthia Lee Arthur died unexpectedly at her home in Durham on Thursday, February 10, 2000. She was the daughter of Mildred W. Arthur of Danville, VA and the late Max Arthur. She was a native of Asheboro and had been a resident of Durham for the last 12 years.
She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and from the Danville Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Surviving are her mother; her best friend Kathy Wolfe; a sister Anne Arberg of Chapel Hill, and a niece, Jennifer Arberg of Siler City. A service honoring her life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Durham County Rescue Squad. Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.
W. K. Fulton
WILSON, N.C. - W.K. "Commodore" Fulton died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000.
He was married
to Ann Fraysure Fulton, who survives. He grew up in Danville and was a retired tobacconist with James I. Miller Tobacco Co., and A.C. Monk Tobacco Co., and was a veteran of WWII serving as a bombardier in the 9th Air Force for four years, two of which were in the European Theater.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Dan Hensley officiating. Interment will be at Maplewood Cemetery.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Martha Ann Fulton of Wilson and Janet Kniss of High Point; one son, Fraysure Fulton of Reidsville, and three grandchildren.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Service.
Sampson Lovelace
PELHAM, N.C. - Sampson Clipper Lovelace, 97, of 511 Lovelace Road, died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 12, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center after one year of declining health.
Lovelace was born in Danville October 2, 1902, a son of the late James Madison Lovelace and Mary Grooms Lovelace. He was married
to Nettie Blanche Travis Lovelace, who survives.
Lovelace was a lifetime farmer who enjoyed hunting, and was a member of Riveroak Church of God.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, James Sampson Lovelace and Marvin Wilson Lovelace, both of Pelham, 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Wes Lovelace and Jack Lovelace, and three sisters, Fannie Emerson, Berta Wilkerson and Lilly Pruitt.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Louis F. Emerson and the Rev. Hassell Priddy.
Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his son, James Lovelace, at 473 Lovelace Road, Pelham.
Louis Williamson Smith III
GRANITE FALLS, N.C. - Louis Williamson Smith III, 45, of 15 Hunters Creek Lane, Granite Falls, N.C., died Feb. 16, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, N.C.
Born Feb. 4, 1955, in Danville, he was the son of Louis Williamson Smith Jr. and Joy Turner Smith, who both survive.
He was a graduate of George Washington High School and Danville Community College, as well as a charter member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Virginia Smith Jones of Blairs. He is also survived by his children.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Ron W. Mateer officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his parents at 301 Northmont Blvd., Danville.

Lucy Henderson
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Lucy Breeden Henderson, 105, of 5909 Chipmunk Drive died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, in the Community General Hospital in Thomasville.
Born March 20, 1894, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Lee Andrew Breeden and Fannie Howard Owens Breeden.
She was married
to Pendleton P. Henderson, who died April 22, 1949. She had lived a number of years in Caswell County, and had been a resident of Greensboro since 1964.
Survivors include four daughters, Doris Warren of Greensboro, Virginia Pruitt of Ringgold, Va., Bertha Skeen of Archdale and Iris Tate of Moultrie, Ga.; one son, Lee T. Henderson of Providence; 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 16 great great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Watlington, and a son, Berkley Hendereson.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Townes Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Leonard Watlington officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her granddaughter, Mildred Farthing, 921 Walter's Mill Road, Providence.

Lucile Gentry Thompson
BLANCH, N.C. - Lucile Gentry Thompson, 89, of 3571 NC Hwy. 62 North, Blanch, N.C. died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000 at her residence, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Thompson was born August 25, 1910 in Person County, North Carolina, the daughter of Zackary Taylor Gentry and Nannie Margaret Wade Gentry.
She was a member of Red House Presbyterian Church, Semora, N.C. all of her adult life, where she was a pianist for a number of years, and she was a member of the Homemakers Club, past president of the Homemakers Club and a homemaker.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin W. Thompson and two daughters Elizabeth Thompson Butler, and Georgia Gentry Thompson.
Survivors include: 2 daughters: Miss Margaret Thompson of Blanch, N.C. and Mrs. Janie T. Mitchell of Ashoskie, N.C., 2 sons: Edwin W. Thompson, Jr. of Blanch, N.C. and William L. Thompson of Blanch, N.C., 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Red House Presbyterian Church by the Rev. David L. McKenzie. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Red House Presbyterian Church, Semora, N.C.
At other times the family will be at the residence.

Roxanna Henderson Graves
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Roxanna Henderson Graves of 160 Melvin Wrenn Road, Yanceyville, N.C., died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
A native of Caswell County, she was born Dec. 8, 1919 to Walter Henderson and Roxie Mims Henderson. She was a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church where she served in the missionary circle.
She was married
to Ottoway Graves, who predeceased her. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include six daughters, Linda Mangum and Betty G. Long, both of Yanceyville, Kay G. Lewis of Danville, Va., Roxie G. Gigetts of Pelham, Martha G. Pennix of Mebane and Sallie G. Payne of Danville, Va.; two brothers, David Henderson of Elon College and Sidney Henderson of Yanceyville; one sister, Gladys H. Johnson of Burlington; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Graves.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday from Sassafras Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Carl Bigelow officiating. Interment will follow in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Providence Cemetery.
A viewing will take place from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, at Fulton Funeral Home.
The familly will receive friends at the residence.
Nathaniel Poteat
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Nathaniel Poteat of 1525 Main Street, Suncrest Apt. 112, Yanceyville, N.C., died Feb. 19, 2000 in the Brian Center Nursing Home.
A native of Person County, he was born June 15, 1925, the son of George Poteat and Annie Bradshaw Poteat. He was a member of the Hamer Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Geneva Metal in Greensboro.
Survivors include his wife, Lucretia Poteat of the residence; six sons, David Poteat of Yanceyville, Edward Poteat of Washington, Woodrow Poteat of Blanch, N.C., Marvin Poteat of Greensboro, Henry Poteat of Burlington and Michael Poteat of Danville, Va.; five daughters, Florence Ann Scott of Blanch, Margaret McGhee of Mebane, Betty J. Merriman of Alexander, Va., Mary Delois Brown of Yanceyville, Patricia M. Poteat of Washington; one brother, George Thomas Poteat of Baltimore; 27 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hamer Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Rev. Cephus Lea officiating. Interment will follow in the church cememtery.

Max Theron Smith
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Max Theron Smith, 71, of 2531 Slade Road, died Monday Feb. 21, 2000 at Brian Center after a period of declining health.
Born in Caswell County, he was the son of Oscar "Jake" and Katie Bradner Smith. He was a farmer and an adjuster for Hail Insurance. He was a member of First Baptist Church, and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in Germany for three years. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #11.
Survivors include his wife, Sue H. Smith, of the residence; two sons, Al Smith of the residence and Andy Smith of Wake Forest; one daughter, Susie S. Crooks of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Naomi Walker and Nina Lee Smith, both of Carrollton, Ga.; two brothers, Oscar A. Smith Jr., and J. Clifton Smith, both of Burlington; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Yanceyville, with the Rev. Claude Harrelson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cememtery.
