Gaynell Hall

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Gaynell Shackelford Hall, 71, of Carolina House of Reidsville, died Monday morning, Feb. 22, 1999.

She was a native of Pittsylvaina County, Va.

She was married icon to Irvin A. Hall, who predeceased her.

She lived in Reidsville for most of her life. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include three daughters, Phyllis Garrett and Donna Higgins, both of Reidsville, and Cathy Wilson of Wentworth; four brothers and four sisters; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was also predeceased by six brothers and a sister.

A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Phylis Garrett, 865 Wolf Island Road.

Florence Hooper

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Florence Shelton Hooper, 67, of 45 County Home Road, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Caswell County, the daughter of the late William Brown and Ethel Poteat Shelton. She grew up in the Prospect Church community and was pianist for a number of years at Prospect United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Yanceyville United Methodist Church in Yanceyville. Mrs. Hooper was employed by the Yanceyville Sanitary District and was a contracting agent and branch manager with the North Carolina License Plate Bureau for 33 years. She retired from the Yanceyville Sanitary District in 1986 and from the license plate bureau in 1995. She was also a volunteer for the Caswell County Civic Center.

She is survived by her husband, Charles H. Hooper of the home; two sons, William Charles "Chuck" Hooper and daughter-in-law, Marthann Carroll Hooper of Yanceyville, and Michael Writche "Mike" Hooper of Providence; two grandchildren, Jennifer Carroll Hooper and Jacob Michael Hooper. She is also survived by three sisters, Ola S. Willis and Helen S. Stainback of West Yanceyville, and Martha S. Taylor of Burlington.

She was predeceased by a grandson, William Henry Hooper II.

The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Yanceyville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vasser Jones and the Rev. George Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville and at other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to The Yanceyville United Methodist Church, c/o Tommy Davis, P.O. Box 1108, Yanceyville, N.C. 27379-1108.

Janey McVay

EDEN, N.C. - Janey Allen McVay, 80, formerly of the Cascade community of Pittsylvania County, Va., died Sunday night, Feb. 21, 1999, at 132 Cedarwood Drive after a decline in health of four years. She had been in an Eden nursing home for three years.

Born Feb. 5, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Acie Allen and Ruth Wright Allen.

She lived most of her life in the Cascade community, and worked a number of years in the No. 8 spinning room of Dan River Inc. until her health failed.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Reynolds of Danville, Va., and Cathy McVay of Axton, Va.; one son, Roger W. McVay of Axton; one sister, Myrtle Dillion of Brosville, Va.; two brothers, Oscar Allen of Eden and Asa Allen of Brosville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. today from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Wayne Roach, minister of Jehovah's Witness, officiating. Burial will be in the Allen family cemetery on State Road 855 at Axton.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Linda Reynolds, 10120 Martinsville Highway.

Joe Shropshire

GASTONIA, N.C. - Joe C. Shropshire, 55, of Gastonia, N.C., died February 23, 1999, at his home.

A native of Ridgeway, Va., he was the son of the late James Lee Shropshire and Rachel Sheppard Shropshire of Ridgeway, who survives.

He was married icon to Ann Jessup Shropshire, who survives.

Shropshire was a graduate of Virginia Tech and was a civil engineer with Duke Power for 20 years.

A member of Covenant Baptist Church in Gastonia, he was a deacon and a Sunday school teacher who was active with the youth mission as well as sports and recreation.

In addition to his mother and his wife, Shropshire is survived by one son, Sam Shropshire of Raleigh; one daughter, Sara Shropshire of Greensboro; one brother, Howard Shropshire of Ridgeway; and two sisters, Eleanor Kallam of Ridgeway and Mary Ruth Hardin of Danville.

Funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Ron Williams and Dr. Charles Teague at Covenant Baptist Church in Gastonia 4 p.m. today.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The family will also receive friends at First Baptist Church in Ridgeway Thursday from 10-11 a.m. The service will follow at the church. The burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway. The Rev. Brannan Thompson will officiate.

McLean & Son Funeral directors are in charge of arrangements in Gastonia, and McKee-Stone Funeral Services in Martinsville.

Mary Love

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Mary Elaine Long Love, 37, of 1276 E. Hughes Mill Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, in Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.

Born Nov. 16, 1961, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of John Willie Long of Burlington and Sarah McClain Long Turner of Yanceyville.

She was a member of Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church and was an employee of Meredith Printing.

She was married icon to Rudolph Love, who survives.

In addition to her parents and husband, survivors include two daughters, Shaekia Love and Lashonda Love, both of the residence; two brothers, John Willie Long Jr. of Yanceyville and James Alexander Long of Whitesville, N.C; and a stepfather, George Turner of Yanceyville.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A viewing of the body will be held 2-8 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Margaret Graves Patchell

RALEIGH, N.C. - Margaret Lillington Graves Patchell, 84, formerly of Burlington, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Raleigh Community Hospital.

She was the daughter of Felix Williamson Graves and Mary Williams Clark Graves and was the grand niece of Chief Justice Walter Clark of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

She was married icon to Burr Edward Patchell, who predeceased her.

She was the owner of Patchell Enterprises.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Belle Patchell of Mebane; one son, Edward Burr Patchell of Garner; two brothers, Edward Thorne Graves of Alton, Va. and William Griffin Graves II of Pawleys Island, S.C.; two sisters Mary G. "Cindy" King and Elizabeth Graves Spence, both of Raleigh; four grandchldren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Wednesday, February 24, 1999 at First Baptist Church-Raleigh. Burial was at Montlawn Memorial Park.

Montlawn Funeral Home, Raleigh, N.C. was in charge of arrangements.

William Swann

PELHAM, N.C. - William Andrew Swann, 83, of 267 Jennings Blackwell Road, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at the Brian Center Nursing home in Yanceyville, N.C.

Born October 13, 1915, in Caswell County, he was the son of Jim Price and Jennie Swann.

He was married icon to Bertha Thomas Swann, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by four sisters, Helen Brown, Beatrice Smith and Mozzell Russell, all of Newport News, and Mary Pegian of Petersburg, Va.

A funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Shady Grove Baptist Church. Interment with military rites by American Legion Post #325 in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 267 Jennings Blackwell Road in Pelham, N.C.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Arvil Caudill

LEASBURG, N.C. - Arvil Caudill, 82, of 183 Hickory Flats Road, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at his residence.

Born Dec. 6, 1916, in Pulaski County, Ky., he was the son of John M. Caudill and Polly Caudill Caudill.

He was married icon to Katherine Coleman Caudill, who survives.

He was employed 18 years with Mars Minning Company, Elkorn, Ky.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Anna Stewart and Betty Etling, both of Leasburg; one sister, Dixie Fields of Letcher, Ky.; and one son, Dean Godd of Colleyville, Texas.

He was predeceased by one sister, Ethel Polly.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at the Caudill Family Cemetery with the Rev. Earl Polly officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Marley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd Hamilton

BOONE, N.C. - Floyd Brooks Hamilton, 89, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999.

Born November 10, 1910 in Anson County, N.C., he was the son of Joel Fuller Hamilton and Lucy Mary Brooks Hamilton.

He is survived by his wife, Minnie Bare Hamilton; a daughter, Phyllis Hamilton, of Boone; two sisters, Lucy Mae McBride of Wadesboro and J.E. Powell Jr. of Danville, Va.; and a brother, Boyce Henry Hamilton of Wadesboro.

He was predeceased by a son, James Fuller Hamilton.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at McVale Funeral Home, Lenoir, with burial in the local cemetery.

Hezekiah Pruitt

PROSPECT HILL, N.C. - Hezekiah Pruitt, 77, of 2120 Egypt Road, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at his residence.

Born April 12, 1921, in Person Co., he was the son of Hezekiah Pruitt and Lunnie Mae Rice Pruitt.

He was married icon to Myrtle Mae Walker Pruitt, who predeceased him Aug. 8, 1992.

He was a retired farmer and textile worker.

Survivors include three daughters, Faye Talley and Shirley Patterson, both of Burlington and Christine Rice of Mebane; two sons, Curtis Pruitt of Yanceyville and Ernest "Tub" Pruitt of Burlington; four sisters, Maudie Bradshaw, and Ollie Horsley, both of Danville, Va., Rebecca Golda of Clarksville, Va., and Lou Etta Wall of Virgilinia, Va.; three brothers, Haywood Pruitt of Reidsville and Raymond Pruitt of Alton, Va. and Howard Pruitt of Roxboro; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Lea Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Elliott, Rev. Claude Harrelson and the Rev. Bobby Helms officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Marley Funeral Home.
