Gloria "Bee" Horton

PELHAM, N.C. - Gloria "Bee" Horton, 64, of 73 Nunnally Road, died Saturday morning, Aug. 9, 1997, at University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill after six months of declining health.

Born Aug. 14, 1932, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Virginia Wyatt Eason.

She was married icon to Elbert Horton, who predeceased her.

She spent most of her life in the Pelham community where she was a homemaker.

In addition to her mother of Yanceyville, she is survived by a daughter, Pam H. Lashus of Providence; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Loy Kennedy.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter, Pam Lashus, 556 Stephens Road, Providence.

Gloria "Bee" Horton

Charles Wilkerson

HURDLE MILLS, N.C. - Charles Cavness Wilkerson, 87, 3226 Hester Store Road, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 24, 1909, in Person County, he was a son of William Robert Wilkerson and Ara Brooks Wilkerson.

He was married icon to Ruth Hawkins Wilkerson, who survives.

He was a self-employed farmer.

He was a member of Lea's Chapel United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include a son, Robert Moore Wilkerson of Fredricksburg, Va.; a daughter, Nancy Wilkerson Jones of Greensboro; two brothers, Edgar L. Wilkerson Sr. of Lexington and W.R. Wilkerson of Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Mollie W. Rogers of Fort Defiance, Va., and Aliene W. Taylor and Edna Wilkerson, both of Roxboro; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Cornelia Moore Wilkerson; and a son, Charles Vernon Wilkerson.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Lea's Chapel United Methodist Church, Roxboro, by the Rev. Doug Lain. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.

Brooks & White Funeral Home, Roxboro, is in charge of arrangements.

George Merchant Jr.

GOLDSBORO, N.C. - George T. Merchant Jr., 66, 1606 N. Berkeley Bld., died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of George T. Merchant and Georgianna Odell Merchant.

He was married icon to Billie Hall Merchant, who survives.

A retired Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, he was a retired employee of Celotex.

He was a member of the D.A.V., the American Legion and the American Military Retirees Association.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, William Terry Merchant of Goldsboro; two brothers, Garland Merchant of Charlotte and Jacque Merchant of Danville, Va.; and three sisters, Esther Phipps of Shelby and Jacqueline Davis and Mary Carter, both of Danville, Va.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in the Wayne Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Ray Brown with military honors.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home in Goldsboro.

Maurice Elmore

GRAHAM, N.C. - Maurice Elmore, 27, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1997.

Born May 28, 1970, in Caswell County, he was a son of Robert Elmore and Gladys McGhee Elmore.

He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Semora.

A 1988 graduate from Bartlett-Yancey High School, he was employed by Mebane Packing Co. in Mebane.

In addition to his mother of Milton and father of Burlington, survivors include his stepmother, Irma Elmore of Burlington; two brothers, Ricky Elmore of Eden and Connell Elmore of Greensboro; a son, Maurice Elmore Jr. of Graham; and a grandmother, Katie Elmore of Semora.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church by the Rev. P.D. Medley. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held 7-8 tonight at the church.

The family will receive friends at 134 Broad St., Milton.

Plenty Funeral Home, Semora, is in charge of arrangements.

Maggie Green

RUFFIN, N.C. - Maggie Bray Green, 87, 1713 Worsham Mill Road, died Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 13, 1997, at Annie Penn Hospital.

She was a native of Henry County, Va.

She was a homemaker, and a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Lottie Bell Green of the residence; a son, Elbert L. Green of the residence; three sisters, Laura Kendrick and Martha Roberts, both of Eden, and Madgel Gammon of Ruffin; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville. Burial will be held in the Green Family Cemetery on Horse Shoe Road.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Mattie English

BLANCH, N.C. - Mattie Vadra Bartholomew English, 79, 52 Arthur Swann Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997, at the residence of her daughter, Sandra E. Chilton, 986 Farmer Road.

Born Oct. 13, 1917, in Nash County, she was a daughter of James Willis Bartholomew and Egolia Brantley Bartholomew.

She was married icon to William B. English, who died in 1970.

She was a homemaker and a member of Community Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra E. Chilton of Blanch; two sons, Keith English of Blanch and Don English of Tyner; three sisters, Mildred Green of Kingston, Nellie Pace of Spring Hope and Vivian Murray of Newport News, Va.; two brothers, Vernon Bartholomew and Perry Bartholomew, both of Spring Hope; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Community Baptist Church by the Rev. R.G. Williams and the Rev. Mark Smith. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, and other times at the residence of her daughter.

Jason 'Buddy' Mayhew

EDEN, N.C. - Jason "Buddy" Clarence Mayhew, 84, 1075 Chumney Loop, died Friday morning, Aug. 22, 1997, at the residence of his son, Jason F. "Joe" Mayhew, in Bowie, Md.

He was a native of Leaksville.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Eden and of Dundalk Lions Club.

He was a retired superintendent of railroad maintenance for Patapsco & Back River Railroad.

In addition to his son of Bowie, Md., survivors include three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be held in Danview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Doris Bray

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Doris Peck Bray died Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997, at Wesley Long Hospital.

A native of Danville, Va., she was the valedictorian of her class at George Washington High School. She formerly worked for the law firm of Clemmont, Winston and Conway and also the law firm of Crews and Craig. Before moving to Greensboro, she lived in El Paso, Texas, and worked for the William Beaumont Army Medical Center.

She resided in Greensboro for the last 10 years with her son and his family.

She is survived by her son, Tony Bray; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Edwin Knight

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. - Edwin Calvin Knight Sr., 77, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 7, 1920, in Danville, Va., to Walter Fountain and Lillie Short Knight.

He was a World War II Naval Aviator, Lt. Commander (ret.). He received several awards in the war, including the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the Air Medal with three Gold Stars. He flew the Grumman "Hellcat" in the South Pacific and Asia.

He retired from Levi-Strauss & Company in 1990 as Manager of Quality Control/Fabric Evaluation.

He is survived by one sister, Wilma Jones, of Danville; one daughter, Cindy Knight; three sons, Edwin Knight Jr., Jeffrey Knight and Kevin Knight; and six grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park Cemetery in Danville.

Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home of Winston-Salem is in charge of arrangements.
