Maggie Nobles
LUMBERTON, N.C. - Maggie Mae Butts Nobles, 77, died Monday, April 15, 1996, in the Woodhaven Nursing Center of Lumberton.
Born May 5, 1918, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Walter Butts and Elizabeth Fuller Butts.
She was employed by Kmart as a sales associate until her retirement.
She was also a member of the Tabernacle Church.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Hattie Nobles of Danville; and a cousin, Juanita Lynch of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Wednesday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Hattie Nobles, 181 Franklin Court.
Barker Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
Wilma Craig
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Wilma Hollifield Craig, 83, 182 Shady Acres Lane, died Wednesday, June 12, 1996, in her residence.
A native of Asheville, she was a member of State Street Church of God.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Cone Mills.
Survivors include six sons, James Craig and Ellis C. Craig, both of Reidsville, Jerry Ray Craig and Anthony J. Craig, both of Greensboro, Samuel E. Craig and Drew Craig, both of Ruffin; two sisters, Thelma Lawson and Nellie Dillard, both of Greensboro; a brother, Fred Blackmon of Wilmington; 22 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Eillis Creed Craig; and two daughters, Peggy Joyce Ryals and Judy Marie Ryals.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, North Elm Chapel. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Wallace Glass
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Wallace Dudley Glass, 62, 203 Chicken Farm Road, died Wednesday, June 12, 1996, in Morehead Memorial Hospital.
A native of Rockingham County, he was a son of June and Lottie Dallas Glass.
He spent his entire life in Rockingham County and was employed by the State of North Carolina as an aid to the blind.
Survivors include a son, Samuel D. Glass of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Elizabeth G. Rosario of Winston-Salem; a sister, Rebecca G. Ramsey of Albemarle; three brothers, Gene H. Glass of Reidsville, James C. Glass of Greensboro, and William J. "Bill" Glass of Eden; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from the chapel of Citty Funeral Home, in Reidsville, by the Rev. LeRoy Joyce. Burial will be in Mt. Herman Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
Richard Atkins
SALISBURY, N.C. - Richard "Walker" Atkins, 84, of 128 Union Heights Blvd., died Saturday, April 20, at Rowan Memorial Medical Center, after being seriously ill for three weeks.
Born July 4, 1911, in Chatham County, Va., he was the son of Mary Mageline Hodges Atkins and Jack Obie Atkins.
He was educated in Chatham Co., Va., schools.
Known by many as Rich Walker, he was a horse and mule trader. He operated a trade barn in Hogan's Alley during the early years in Salisbury. An auctioneer for 70 years, he sold livestock in three states and at one time was probably the best known horse auctioneer in the state. He also worked at Asheboro Salebarn for 43 years followed by employment at the Carolina Stockyards until his retirement.
He was a member of the Salisbury Church of the Nazarene.
He was married
to Margie Troutman Atkins who predeceased him.
Survivors include one son, Walter F. "Gene" Atkins of Salisbury; one daughter, Becky A. Tarlton of Salisbury; four brothers, Riley Walker, Buddy Walker, J.D. Atkins, and Willard Walker, all of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Annie Burnette and Rena Clifton, both of Danville, Va.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christ United Methodist Church by the REv. Randy Foster. Burial will follow in Rowan Memorial Park.
The body may be viewed at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church, and at other times the family will receive friends at the residence.
Lyerly Funeral Home in Salisbury is in charge of arrangements.
Curtis Hyatt
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Curtis Washington Hyatt, 65, 409 Forestway Drive, in Mount Holly, died Sunday, April 21, 1996, in the Presbyterian Hospital of Charlotte following a heart attack.
Born April 1, 1931, in Camden, S.C., he was a son of George W. Hyatt and Marjorie Yates Hyatt.
He was married
to Christen Hyatt, who survives.
He was self-employed as a retail merchant, and formerly worked at Dan River Mills in the weave room.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Curtis William Hyatt of Milton and John Harrison Hyatt of Yanceyville; one daughter, Susan Francine Davis of Danville, Va.; three brothers, Billy Hyatt of Charlotte, George Hyatt of Mount Holly and Tommy Hyatt of Clover, S.C.; three sisters, Carolyn Johnson of Charlotte, Doris Walden of Lancaster, S.C., and Gail Cuthbert of Clover, S.C.; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by a brother, Cecil Hyatt.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Corthers Funeral Home, in Gastonia. The burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 6-8:00 tonight at the funeral home.
Junior Brinkley
SEMORA, N.C. - Arthur Bingham Brinkley Jr., 71, of 650 Cunningham Road, died suddenly Saturday, April 27, 1996, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.
Born March 30, 1925, in Sugar Grove, he was a son of Arthur Bingham Brinkley and Annie Mast Brinkley.
He spent most of his life in Caswell County, where he had worked with Thomas Bros. Oil Co. as an attendant for T & T Gas Stations in Blairs, Va. He retired in 1987.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of American Legion Post 325.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marines.
He was married
to Nancy Wilson Brinkley who died May 14, 1968.
On Aug. 25, 1972, he married
Mary McCann Adkins Brinkley, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Bonnie B. Swicegood of Providence; Robin G. Brinkley of Ringgold, Va.; two step-daughters, Wanda A. Hancock of Keeling, Va., and Jane A. Osborn of Meridian, Miss.; one step-son, Larry J. Adkins of Danville, Va.; one sister, Nadine B. Monk of Mebane; two grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Frank Garton. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 325.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.
Lottie Hovatter
BUSHY FORK, N.C. - Lottie Mary Long Hovatter, 85, of 7615 Burlington Road, died Sunday, April 28, 1996, at her home.
Born in Person County, she was a daughter of David and Mollie O'Briant Long.
She was a music teacher for 33 years and a 50-year member of the Busky Fork Extension Homemakers Club.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She was married
to Scott Hovatter, who is predeceased.
Survivors include two sons, William D. "Bill" Hovatter of Bushy Fork; Huel T. Hovatter of Ruffin; two daughters, Ann H. Hodges of Ruffin, and Alice H. Des Roches.
She was predeceased by a son, Robert Hovatter.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Jeff Roberts and Elder C.B. Davis Jr. Burial will be in Burchwood Cemetery Annex.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Mae McCann
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Flossie Mae McCann, 67, of Suncrest Apartments, died Saturday, April 27, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for several years and in the hospital for four days.
Born Feb. 27, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of Julian Theodore Heffinger Jr. and Mary Lena Wilson Heffinger.
She spent all her life in Pittsylvania County, Va., and Caswell County, where she had worked for Durham Hosiery until her retirement for health reasons.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Yanceyville.
Survivors include two daughters, Dale C. Dunn of Milton and Gale C. Newton of Dry Fork, Va.; one sister, Bertha H. Ruppe of Danville, Va.; two brothers, David Hoover and Henry Hoover both of Danville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Herbert Hoover.
The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Stanley H. Hare.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel, and other times will be at the home of her daughter, Dale C. Dunn, Race Track Road, Milton.
