Joseph "Allen" Ware
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - The funeral for Joseph "Allen" Ware, 69, of 432 Wilson Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Barry Crumpton and the Rev. Rufus E. Butner. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
He died Saturday, July 20, 1996, at his brother's home at Ringgold.
Born Sept. 13, 1926, in Caswell County, he was a son of Otis Stephen Ware and Thelma Lee Begley Ware.
He spent most of his life in Caswell County. He worked with the ASCS, where he surveyed tobacco land and was associated with Planters Warehouse. Until his retirement, he also worked with Lorillard Tobacco Co.
He was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include five brothers, Lee V. Ware of Danville, Va.; Adrain D. Ware of Providence; Claude S. Ware of Yanceyville; John S. Ware of Garner; and Walter C. Ware of Ringgold, Va.
Ware was predeceased by three brothers, Rufus L. Ware, Wayne M. Ware and Otis S. Ware Jr.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a brother, Walter C. Ware, 1300 Ringgold Road, State Route 734.
Hugh H. McAden
SEMORA, N.C. - Hugh Harrison McAden, 80, of 4800 Hwy. 57-N, died Tuesday, July 23, 1996, at Duke Medical Center.
Born Feb. 13, 1916, in Caswell County, he was son of John Henry and Ella Yarbrough McAden.
He worked as a representative for the Life of Virginia Insurance Co. He was an Air Force veteran in World War II.
He was a member of the Ruritan Club. He also belonged to Semora United Methodist Church.
He was married
to Janet Welsted McAden.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Patricia Brunson of Semora, and Mary McAden of Durham; one sister, Mary Satterfield of Milton; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Lebanon Christian Church cemetery by the Rev. Frank Garton.
Brooks & White Funeral Home in Roxboro, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.
Timothy Arthur Oakes
DURHAM, N.C. - Timothy Arthur Oakes, 33, died Sunday, July 21, 1996, at Duke University Medical Center.
Born Jan. 11, 1963, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of Leroy Franklin Oakes and Jean Strickland Oakes.
He was married
to Sheila Lewis Oakes.
In addition to his wife of Roxboro, survivors include his parents, Leroy F. Oakes of Burlington, N.C., and Jean S. Oakes of Alton, Va.; one son, Timothy Oakes II of Roxboro; two stepsons, Zach and Jordan Lewis of Roxboro; one sister, Donna Compton of Vernon Hill, Va.; and one brother, Larry F. Oakes of Danville.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Halifax Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Rodney Barker and the Rev. Jimmy Pulliam.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 13125 Philpott Road, Alton, Va.
Powell Funeral Home in South Boston is in charge of arrangements.
Beulah S. Thompson
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Beulah S. Thompson, 86, died Monday July 22, 1996, at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem after a short illness.
Born July 5, 1910, she was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. P.F. Sutton.
She was a primary education teacher for 28 years and the district manager for World Book, Inc. from 1962 to 1975. She lived in Durham, N.C., from 1969 to 1995 where she was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, William S. Thompson; one brother, J.P. "Pat" Sutton; one sister, Evelyn S. Duvall; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Hooper Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the cemetery of First Baptist Church of Yanceyville.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Hooper Funeral Home, 143 Third Ave., Yanceyville, N.C.
Iola B. Murphy
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Iola Butler Murphy, 89, formerly of Leasburg, died July 23, 1996, at Patton Family Care Home in Reidsville.
Born in Caswell County on Jan. 14, 1907, she was a daughter of Jefferson Davis Butler and Florette Smith Butler.
She was a longtime member of Griers Presbyterian Church where she played the organ for 57 years. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 239, the Caswell Home Extension Club, held of number of offices at the state and county level. She was also a homemaker.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charlie Edward Murphy, in 1973.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at Griers Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Tom Lane. Buial will be in the Hebron Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2-3:30 p.m. at the church, prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the residence of her niece, Catherine Bass, 2645 N.C. Highway 119, Leasburg.
Marley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mae Murphy
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Mae Durham Murphy, 79, of Pelham, died Tuesday, July 30, 1996, in the Brian Center of Yanceyville, following several years of declining health.
Born March 7, 1917, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Elvin Durham and Mattie Eva Durham Durham.
She was predeceased by her husband, George Edward Murphy.
She spent most of her life in the Pelham community. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Caswell County School system as a lunch room manager for over 20 years.
She was a member of Pelham United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Jackie Mae Stallings of Milton and Daphne Murphy Ainsworth of River Ridge, La.; and a sister, Irene D. Strader of Pelham.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Pelham United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael B. Harrill and the Rev. Donnie Durham. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her niece, Betty Gentry, 737 Red Marshall Road, Pelham.
Herman Jones Sr.
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - The funeral for Herman F. Jones Sr., 81, of 927 South Scales St., will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Reidsville. Burial will be in Greenview Cemetery.
He died Saturday, Aug. 3, 1996, at his home.
Born in Danville, Va., and reared in Graham, he was the son of Lula Margaret Smith and Robert Burton Jones.
He was a retired manager of the Big Apple Super Market in Reidsville.
Jones was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Reidsville and was a deacon, elder and a member of the Chancel choir. He also was a charter member of the Men's Garden Club of Reidsville.
Survivors include his son, Robert Simpson of Greensboro.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Simpson Jones, and son, Herman F. "Steve" Jones Jr.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Elizabeth Throckmorton
RALEIGH, N.C. - Elizabeth Mills Throckmorton, 83, formerly of Danville, Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 1996, in her residence.
Born Jan. 12, 1913, in the Tunstall district of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Sidney Martin Mills and Bettie Shelton Mills.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Goodman Throckmorton.
She spent most of her life in Danville, and was a member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church (formerly Second Baptist Church). In 1994, she moved to Raleigh after residing at 142 Holbrook St., in Danville, Va., for more than 50 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Anne T. Childs of Raleigh; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Lewis P. Harris Sr.
Brown-Wynne Funeral Home of Raleigh is in charge of arrangements.
H. Stamey Gunn
PELHAM, N.C. - H. Stamey Gunn, 77, 5808 Parks Springs Road, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 1996, in Stratford Nursing Center of Danville, Va., following several months of declining health.
Born in Caswell County, he was a son of Ernest L. and Mary Hicks Gunn.
He was married
to Dorothy H. Gunn, who died April 30, 1992.
Educated in the Caswell County schools, he was employed as a maintenance supervisor for the county until his retirement. He also served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Daniel of Pelham; a sister, Virginia Anderson of California; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service, with military rites, will be conducted 2 p.m Sunday from Prospect United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Wilkinson. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville, and other times at the residence.
