Levi Tamling Dempsey
The funeral will be Thursday for Levi Thomas Tamling Dempsey, 77, 3465 Hickory Place, Spencer Forest, who died Monday (July 19, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.
Born May 24, 1922, in Nash County, Mr. Dempsey, a son of the late Sidney H. and Irene Vick Dempsey, was educated in the Nash County schools and a received blind rehabilitation.
He retired from Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, D.C. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he joined Sandy Fork Missionary Baptist Church, Nash County, at an early age.
His wife, Eva “Bonnie” Ford Dempsey, died in August 1990. A daughter, Irene D. Epps, died Feb. 3, 1999.
Survivors include sons Levi T. Dempsey Jr., Seat Pleasant, Md., Donald F. Dempsey, Temple Hills, Md., Anthony Dempsey, Parkerburg, W.Va., and Reginald E. Dempsey, Salisbury; daughters Shirley D. Clarke, Jacqueline Chambers and Marietta Angela Dempsey, all of Washington, D.C.; brothers John O. and Sidney N. Dempsey, both of Washington, D.C., and Dr. Joseph P. Dempsey, Raleigh; sisters Geraldine Griffin and Catherine D. Dixon, both of Washington, D.C., and Maryline D. Tucker, Cherverly, Md.; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, A.R. Kelsey Memorial Chapel, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. Donald Holness, pastor, Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury. military rites by Salisbury Rowan Veterans Council.
Visitation: 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
William Edgar Akers
IROQUIS BOTTOM, W.Va. — William Edgar Akers, 69, Iroquis Bottom, died Monday (July 19, 1999) at the home of a daughter, Darlene Hailey, 104 Woodwinds St., Locust, N.C.
Born Feb. 25, 1930, in Wytheville, Va., Mr. Akers was a son of Mamie Franklin Gravley Akers Shrewberry, Stephenson, and the late William Emmett Akers. A retired coal miner, he was last employed by the city of Mullens.
Survivors, in addition to his mother and daughter, include sons Thomas Akers, Richfield, N.C., and Aaron Akers, Mullens; daughters Peggy Fury, Gold Hill, N.C., Linda Burnette and Frankie Reed, both of New London, N.C., Malissa Barnette, Salisbury, N.C., and Stephanie Blaylock, Richfield, N.C.; brothers Jack Akers, Layland, and and Kelly Akers, Helen; sisters Elizabeth Akers, Richfield, N.C., and Bertha Davis, Farco; 29 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be held in Iroquis Bottom with burial in Wytheville, Va.

Elijah Garner
The funeral will be Friday for Elijah Garner, 67, 628 Marcy Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Salisbury, who died Thursday (July 15, 1999) at Marcus Garvey Nursing Home, Brooklyn, N.Y., after seven months of serious illness.
A native of Salisbury, Mr. Garner, a son of the late Gus and Eva Garner, was educated in the Salisbury schools. He was a truck driver for many years and had worked as a roofer in New York City.
Survivors include wife of 45 years Beulah M. Garner; daughters Linda Garner Steed and Alisa Garner, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; stepdaughter Wanda Shuford Cook, Tampa, Fla.; brother Harold Garner, Salisbury; nephew reared in the home Andrew Shuford, Brooklyn, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Merrit Green & Jefferson Funeral Home, Brooklyn, N.Y. Burial in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Mary Ellen Tinsley
Mary Ellen Tinsley, a Rowan County native, died Sunday (July 18, 1999) at her home in Alexandria, Va.
She was reared in Rowan County.
Her husband, William D. Tinsley, and a daughter, Lea Tinsley, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters Billie McElroy and Patricia A. Peck; sister Mildred Hartman; brother Everette Jacobs; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Lola Jane Pressley
KANNAPOLIS — Lola Jane Pressley, 92, 204 W. 18th St., died Tuesday (July 20, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born April 11, 1907, in Union County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Amanda Haigler Pressley. Retired from the sewing room of Cannon Mills Plant 1 in 1973, she was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church, where she was active in the nursery class in earlier years.
She is survived by a brother, Henry Pressley, and a sister Velma Adams, both of Kannapolis.
Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Leon Hawks. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Lillie Mae M. Wallace
CLEVELAND — Lillie Mae McHenry Wallace, 92, formerly of Krider Street, died Tuesday (July 20, 1999) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.
Born July 8, 1907, in Rowan County, Mrs. Wallace, a daughter of the late Thomas William and Maggie Ray McHenry, was educated in the Rowan County schools. Last employed by the Rowan County Schools, she was a member of Allen Temple Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, Robert Lee Wallace, died May 18, 1986.
Survivors include son Thomas W. McHenry III, Cleveland; daughter Gladys Turner, Cleveland; stepson James R. Wallace, Cleveland; stepdaughters Helen Brawley, Dorothy Ellis, Shirley McShaw, Lila Weldon and Florence Sifford, all of Salisbury; nieces reared in the home Wilma Leach and Willie Mae Jones, both of Salisbury; grandson reared in the home Lamont McHenry, Cleveland; and two other grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS — Ralph Arthur Gregory Jr., 51, 511 Hoffman St., Hammond, Ind., formerly of Kannapolis, died Thursday (July 22, 1999) at his home.

Grace Little Simmons
CLEVELAND — Grace Little Simmons, 90, 4955 Needmore Road, died Wednesday (July 22, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 21, 1909, in Iredell County, Mrs. Simmons was a daughter of the late Lee and Mamie Reid Little. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she last worked at the Salisbury VA Medical Center. She had earlier worked with Trinity Towers in Washington, D.C. She was a member of Rock Hill Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Simmons, and sons Robert L., Franklin R. and George A. Simmons.
Survivors include son James A. Simmons, Cleveland; daughter Annie Quarles, of the home; 18 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Lee Kyle Troutman
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Lee Kyle Troutman, 87, 1118 Thomas Ave., who died Wednesday (July 21, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two years of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.
Born Dec. 31, 1911, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Troutman was a son of the late M.A. and Joann Harkey Troutman. He had retired in 1975 after 50 years with Cannon Mills, Plant 1, No. 2 weave room.
A member of Midway United Methodist Church, he had served as Sunday school teacher and superintendent and chairman of the board of trustees. He was active with the Homer Mills Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Men and had helped build the present sanctuary.
Mr. Troutman was also a member of Woodmen of the World and made reed hooks for various businesses and Fieldcrest-Cannon Inc.
Survivors include wife Leona Helms Troutman; son James Lee Troutman, Kannapolis; sister Maude Dunn, Kannapolis; stepsisters Ruby Morgan, China Grove, and Ethel Harrington, Concord; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Midway United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy Rintz, the Rev. Don Noblitt and Bobbie Beam. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Thomas Street.
