George Allen Andersen, 26, of 404 W. Fearing Street, Elizabeth City died Saturday morning, November 15, 2003, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born in Princeton, Illinois and was a carpenter.
George is survived by his mother, Rita Taylor Ballance of Elizabeth City, NC, his father, Bruce Allen Andersen of Buda, Illinois, his step-father, John Ballance of Elizabeth City, paternal grandmother, Janet Andersen of Mineral, Il.; his maternal grandparents, Jerry and Rose Znacki of Henry, Il. Also, he is survived by three sisters, Ursula Ballance, Michelle Ballance and Nicole Ballance all of Elizabeth City and one brother, Casey Ballance of Elizabeth City, a niece, Haley James of Kill Devil Hills, NC, several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held, Friday morning, November 21, 2003, at 11:00am in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. Jake Mullins. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the memorial services. Richard Dunton
Richard L. “Dick” Dunton, Sr., age 68, of 165 Augusta Drive, Grandy, NC, died Thursday, August 5, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Hartford, CT, son of the late Emerson Waldo Dunton, Sr. and Ruby Rathburn Dunton, and was the husband of Lou Ann Varansky Dunton of the residence. Besides his wife, Mr. Dunton is survived by numerous children and grandchildren. Mr. Dunton was a retired independent contractor.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, August 8, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Laurel Memorial Gardens with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 pm and at other times at the residence. James Oliver Dunton
Coinjock, NC - James “Jim” Oliver Dunton, 72, of 4460 Caratoke Highway, Coinjock, NC died Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Aydlett, NC to the late J. Paul and Julia Sawyer Dunton and was the owner and operator of J. O. Dunton Wrecker Service. He was a retired owner and operator of the Currituck Service Center, a former magistrate of Currituck County, a former bridge tender with the Army Corps of Engineers at Coinjock, a member of the Coinjock Baptist Church, a past Boy Scout Master, a member of Currituck Lodge #463 AF & AM, a retired Crawford Township Volunteer Fireman, and a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in Korean Conflict.
Mr. Dunton is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joan Hayman Dunton of the home; two daughters, June Dunton Klag of Virginia Beach, VA and Joy Dunton Davis of Aydlett, NC; four sisters, Pauline Walker of Currituck, NC, Eunice Perkins of Shawboro, NC, Julia Bea Sample of Aydlett, NC, and Janet Fairley of Poplar Branch, NC; and four grandsons, Justin and Brad Davis and Jamison and Lathan Klag. He was preceded in death by a sister, Loreen “Tootie” Freeman.
A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, February 15, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the Coinjock Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Wellons. Burial will be at the Snowden Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the social hall of the church immediately following the service and at other times at the residence. Ruth Duncan
Ruth Williams Duncan, 92, formerly on South Mill, NC died Saturday, December 06, 2003, in the Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Monroe, NC to the late Thomas A. and Lillie Preslar Williams and was the widow of the late James H. Duncan. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, South Mills, NC.
Mrs. Duncan is survived by a daughter, Johnsie Duncan Harris of Chesapeake, a son, James H. Duncan, Jr. of Chesapeake, VA, two brothers, Neal Williams and Ray Williams both of Monroe, NC, seven grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at 1:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City by Rev. Jim Kreep. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service.

Virginia Dunaye
Southern Shores, NC - Virginia Bard Gatling Lynch Dunaye died Monday, November 3, 2003 at home in Southern Shores, NC of respiratory failure caused by breast and lung cancer. She will be interred Saturday, November 8th, 2003 in the family burial plot at the cemetery of Gatesville, NC. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 12th, 2003 at 1:00 PM at St. Andrew’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, milepost 12 ½, Nags Head, NC.

Robert Duke, Jr.
Retired University Professor
Robert Edwin Duke, Jr., age 82, passed away Monday, October 20, 2003. He had been a resident at Guardian Care of Elizabeth City for the last year and a half. Before that, he lived for more than a decade at 405 N. Martin Street, long the home of Emily Jackson Duke before she predeceased her husband, June 24, 1988. It was also the home of his mother, Martha Truss Duke, who also predeceased him in 1997. Mr. Duke was born in Birmingham, AL (Jefferson County) January 3, 1921.
He was a veteran who served five years as a US Army weatherman during World War II. Mr. Duke pursued a teaching career after earning BA and MA degrees in French from the University of North Carolina. He taught in Albemarle County, Rocky Mount and at the University of Tennessee at Martin before spending his final decades as a faculty member at Elizabeth City State University.
Within the community he was active in support of and participation in theatre productions. He also wrote touching and open, loving letters to his home nation, America, and to his beloved surrogate nation, France, where he lived for five years in the late 1940s and early 1950s. At Guardian Care he loved to organize spelling bees, to greet and remember all patients and staff, to interact with and challenge religious fundamentalists, and to play Scrabble.
Survivors include two brothers, James Alan Duke of Fulton, MD, and John Daniel Duke of Boone, NC. Their children include these surviving nephews and nieces and their families: John Carl Duke of Fulton, MD, Celia Gayle Duke Larson of Northville, MI, Miles Daly Duke of Atlanta, GA, and Cama Joyce Duke of Boone, NC.

Richard Duckett
Kill Devil Hills, NC - A memorial service will be held for Richard M. Duckett Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 7:00 pm at Twiford’s Funeral Chapel in Manteo with Rev. Brad Bradshaw officiating. Twiford Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Duckett, 64, of Kill Devil Hills, passed away Sunday, January 11 in his home. Born in Oelwein, Iowa, he married
Marion Brown in 1963. Together they had three daughters. Early in life, he joined the US Navy and was a plank owner of the USS Mars. He served for four years. After leaving the Navy, he started work for Unisys Corporation. During his time with Unisys, he lived in Woodbridge, VA, Burnsville, MN and Sterling, VA. He retired from Unisys Corp. after 28 years. Mr. Duckett and his wife, Marion, started a business in Clarksville, VA in 1990 called “The Little Retreat.” After 10 years there, they retired to Kill Devil Hills, NC. Mr. Duckett enjoyed golfing and was an avid bowler.
Survivors include his wife, Marion of Kill Devil Hills; his daughters, Pattie Duckett of Salem, VA, Debi Duckett of South Boston, VA and Kristi Mueller and her husband, Erich of Ridgeland, MS; four grandchildren, Michael Duckett, Nicholas Johnson and Ashley and Kyle Mueller.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eva Jenkins Talent; his father, Gerald Duckett; and his sisters, Barbara Joan Foster and Marilyn Duckett.
Visitation will begin 30 minutes prior to the service. Following the services, family and friends will gather in Mr. Duckett’s home.
Helen M. Dubbs
Helen Sandelin Dubbs, 87, of 200 S. Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, April 11, 2004, in the Brian Center, Hertford. She was born in Blackduck, Minnesota and was a retired cosmetologist for 50 years in San Diego, CA.
Mrs. Dubbs is survived by a daughter, Linda Ludden and husband Michael of Elizabeth City; a step son, Duane K. Dubbs, II of El Cajon, CA four grandchildren, two of which are Tristan Ludden and Jason Crow and four great grandchildren.
The body will be cremated and no services are planned at the present time. In lieu of flowers, at the request of Mrs. Dubbs, please spend more time with family, friends and love-ones. The family would like to take this time to say Thank-you for everyone who had a part in Mrs. Dubbs’ life and for being there to offer support and love. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. H. Dick Drylie
Southern Shores, NC - H. Dick Drylie of Southern Shores, NC passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2003. Mr. Drylie who was born in Pittsburgh, PA on February 16, 1939 was a retired Naval Aviator.
He is survived by his wife Jeanne of the home; his son H. Dick Drylie, III of Virginia Beach, VA; his mother Helen Wolcott of Gainesville, FL; and his grandchildren Brent and Megan Daugherty of Elyria, OH, and Zachary Drylie of Virginia Beach, VA. He is preceded in death by his father, H.D. Drylie, Sr. and his brother Dr. David M. Drylie and his daughter, Laura Drylie Daugherty.
A memorial service is scheduled at All Saints Episcopal Church, 40 Pintail Trail, Southern Shores, NC on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at 10:00 AM.

Matthew Burton Dozier
Matthew Burton Dozier, age 45 of 505 Pearl St., Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, May 28 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Currituck County, NC; son of the late Ned and Gladys Burton Dozier and worked in concrete construction.
Mr. Dozier is survived by a daughter, Sabrina Simpson of Powells Point, NC a son, Matthew Simpson of Elizabeth City, NC and a sister, Minnie Braxton of Norfolk, VA.
A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, May 31, 2003 at 1:00 PM at Holy Trinity Community Church, Elizabeth City.

Myldred Edwards Doxey
Bradenton, FL - Myldred Edwards Doxey, age 85, of 5525 21st Ave. W, Bradenton, FL, formerly of Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Bradenton, FL. She was born in Tyrrell County, NC daughter of the late William Holliday and Lucille DeFord Edwards, and was the wife of the late Melvin William Doxey. Mrs. Doxey formerly attended Evangelical Methodist Church in Elizabeth City where she was the pianist for many years, and was a member of The Nazarene Church in Palatka, FL.
She is survived by one daughter, Faye Tripp of Shalimar, FL; one son, Marvin Wade Doxey of Milford, DE; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Saturday, July 26, 2003, at 11:00 AM in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel Friday evening 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
Doris Downs
Doris Edith Rasmussen Downs, age 75, of 157 Olivet Circle, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at her residence. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of the late Malvin Rasin and Alma Anderson Rasmussen, and wife of the late Kenneth Winfred Downs. Mrs. Downs worked as a Physician’s Assistant and a X-Ray Technician. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three sons, Harry Randolph Hansen of Chesapeake, VA, Malvin Alan Hansen of Hertford, NC, and Jeffrey Martin Hansen of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother Charles Rasmussen of Largo, FL; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
Jerry Dowless
KITTY HAWK, NC - JERRY DOWLESS, 45, of Kitty Hawk, NC, died Thursday, August 14, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Dowless, born in Portsmouth, VA, was owner and operator of Jimmy’s Seafood Buffet in Kitty Hawk and was a Protestant. He was the son of Waitus A. Dowless of Kill Devil Hills and Aileen Ellis Sanders of Kitty Hawk.
Besides his parents, Mr. Dowless is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Tesoriero Dowless of the residence; a daughter, Sophia Dowless, two sons, Shane and Jason Dowless, all of Kitty Hawk; and a sister Vicki Slaughter of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Monday, August 18, 2003 at 10:00 am with Father Joseph Klaus officiating. Burial will be in the Southern Shores Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Holy Redeemer on Sunday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. James H. Douglas, Sr.
Elizabeth City, NC - James Horace Douglas, Sr., age 77 of 118 Brickhouse Lane Lot 16, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Hyde County, NC; son of the late Samuel Shelby and Sarah Elizabeth Harris Douglas and was the widower of Lucille Sawyer Douglas. He was a retired mechanic.
Mr. Douglas is survived by two daughters, Shirley Barnett of Valdese, NC and Lynn Barber of Elizabeth City, NC; five sons, Charlie Douglas, Danny Douglas, and Randy Douglas, all of Elizabeth City, NC, Horace Douglas, Jr. of Currituck, NC and Ricky Douglas of Camden, NC; three sisters, Elizabeth Gibbs of Englehard, NC, Mary Alice Bland of Robertsonville, NC and Virginia Nobles of Manteo, NC; a brother, Harry Douglas of Elizabeth City, NC; nineteen grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a grandson and a great grandson.

Myrtle Dough
COLINGTON, NC - MYRTLE MEEKINS DOUGH, 77, of Colington, died, Saturday, August 9, 2003, in Elizabeth City, N.C. Mrs. Dough was born in Colington was retired co-owner of Stop and Shop Grocery in Kill Devil Hills and was a member of Colington United Methodist Church.
She was the daughter of the late William Lewis and Ida Haywood Meekins and the wife of the late McDonald Dough.
Surviving are two sons; Mike Dough and wife Jane and Mark Dough and wife Cindy both of Kitty Hawk, daughter in law; Linda Dough of Kill Devil Hills, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Dough was pre-deceased by her son Rodney Dough.
A celebration of life will be held, Monday, August 11, 2003, at 2:00 p.m in Hill Top Cemetery in Colington by the Rev. Robert Pitsch. Memorial donations may be made to the Thomas A. Alma Owens Doty
Frederick, MD - Alma Owens Doty, 90, formerly a resident of Manteo, NC, died Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was born in Alligator, NC to the late Robert Valentine and Martha Alexander Owens and was the widow of A.C. Stratton, Jr. and Dale E. Doty. She was a member of the Order of Rebekah Lodge of Manteo, NC.
Mrs. Doty is survived by a son, Timothy J. Stratton and wife Marianne of Ijamsville, MD; three grandchildren, Hayley Stratton and Daniel Stratton both of Ijamsville, MD and Pamela Johnson of Frisco, NC; two great grandchildren, Cameron Johnson and Christa Johnson both of Frisco, NC; three sisters, Thelma Perry of Newport News, VA, and Marie Ratchford and Clara Mae Shannon both of Manteo, NC; a brother, Bobby Owens of Manteo, NC; a cousin, Marguerite Tulley of Elizabeth City, NC; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, A.C. Stratton, III, a grandson, A.C. Stratton, IV, a brother, Leon Owens, and a step mother, Clara Owens.
A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, January 16, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC, by the Rev. Jim Davenport. Burial will be in Manteo Cemetery.
Zelda Doshier Mann
Zelda Doshier Mann, 86, died on Monday, September 13, 2004 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Nags Head. Mrs. Mann was born in East Lake and was a resident of Manteo before entering Britthaven Nursing Home. She retired from civil service as a clerk for the Naval Supply Center at Norfolk Naval Base. She was a member of the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, the Outer Banks Woman’s Club and Roanoke Island Garden Club. Mrs. Mann was the daughter of the late John Wesley Twiford and the late Melissa Everton Twiford and was the widow of Floyd Curtis Doshier and James Mann.
She is survived by one son, Steve Doshier and wife, Rosemarie of East Lake; two step-daughters, Joann Mann Ball and husband Sam and Crystal Mann Sidwell and husband Jim, all of Manns Harbor; one sister, Juanita White, and husband Roy of Forest, VA; eight grandchildren, Ernest Doshier and wife, Darlene, of Ocracoke, Matthew Doshier and Kelly Gunter of East Lake, Stephanie Doshier of Kill Devil Hills, Kathryn Landazuri and husband Alfredo of Manns Harbor, Sam Ball II and wife Deanne of Hickory, Brian Ball and wife Christine of Kill Devil Hills, Renee Burrus and husband, Darren of Buxton and Jocelyn Sidwell of Virginia Beach, VA; and twelve great-grandchildren, Tyler Doshier, Alexandra Doshier, Jordan Doshier, Jacob Barnes, Jozi Barnes all of East Lake, Brianna Landazuri of Manns Harbor, Alex Ball, Haley Ball of Hickory, Abby Ball, Elizabeth Ball of Kill Devil Hills, Ashley Burrus and Adrianne Burrus of Buxton.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, on Friday, September 17, 2004 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Anthony Ralph officiating. Burial will take place in the Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, September 16th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM and other times at the home of Steve and Rosemarie Doshier in East Lake.

Elsie Engber Donath
Native of Columbus, OH
Mrs. Elsie Engber Donath, age 84, of formerly of Hertford, NC, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Donath, a native of Columbus, OH, was the widow of Roland William Donath and the daughter of the late Michael Engber and Susan Benning Engber. She was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Mrs. Donath is survived by a daughter, Carol Dillon and her husband, Carl of Elizabeth City, NC; a son Robert Donath and his wife, Jayne of Charlotte, NC; a brother Martin Engber and his wife, Lorraine of KS, six grandsons; and one great granddaughter.
A funeral service will be Thursday, May 27, 2004 at 2:00 pm at Oak Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Higgins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends, Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence of the daughter, 1018 Hockmeyer Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. Roland William Donath
Hertford, NC - Roland William Donath, age 83, of 143 Lazy West Lane, Hertford, NC, died at his residence on Saturday, March 22, 2003. He was a native of Bronx, New York, son of the late William Donath and Elizabeth Becker Donath, and husband of Elsie Engber Donath of the residence. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, and retired from Grumman Aircraft where he was a tool and dye maker. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force during WWII.
Besides his wife, Mr. Donath is survived by: one daughter, Carol Dillon of Elizabeth City, NC; one son, Robert Donath of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Eleanor Holochuck of Flushing, NY, and Gertrude Aguirre of Holly Hills, FL; six grandsons; and one great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at 2:00pm in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery with military honors. The family will greet friends and relatives immediately following the funeral services in the church social hall and at all other times at their residence. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Charles Doerr, Jr.
CHARLES DOERR, JR., 61, of Manteo, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Doerr, born in Washington, DC, was a retired Mapping Engineer for the U.S. Department of Commerce. He was an active member of the NC Beach Buggy Association and an avid fisherman. He was the son of the late Charles Doerr, Sr. and Anita Ulircuis Doerr.
Mr. Doerr is survived by two sons, Charles P. Doerr, III and Kenneth Doerr, both of Edgewater, MD; two sisters, Barbara Russomanno of Glenville, WV and Linda Trott of Dunkirk, MD; and three grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Saturday, July 12, 2003 at 7:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 7:00 pm prior to the service. Family and friends will gather for scattering of the cremated remains on Sunday at 4:00 pm at Coquina Beach, S. Nags Head.
