Mr. Charles Alan Bennett Sr.
Mr. Charles Alan Bennett Sr., 70, of the Silver Creek Plantation in Morganton died unexpectedly Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at the Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington N.C.. Born September 23, 1932 in Burke County he was the son of Lottie Austin Bennett of Morganton and the late Hugh Caldwell Bennett. His wife Jean Patton Bennett preceded him in death.

Mr. Bennett grew up in Morganton and moved to the country as a young boy where he worked on the farm. He played basketball for Glen Alpine even thought it meant having to walk miles to games and practice. During high school he wrote articles for the News Herald. Describing a football game in one article, he said they rolled over their opponents like a green wave- thus the team name, the “Green Waves “ was born. He later played basketball for Appalachian State College and was, all his life, an avid Carolina Tarheel basketball fan.
He was a loving son to both his parents. After the death of his father, he tenderly cared for his mother, always saying he could never repay her for all she had done.
After the death of his beloved Jean, he became both parents to Chuck and Brad. He never faltered- his loved for them knew no limits. In later years, he developed a relationship of respect and love with Lee Waggoner, who would be his long –time devoted companion. Perhaps his greatest loved was for his grandchildren. He experienced such joy watching them in ballgames, taking them to the beach and to Cherokee and seeing them grow and change. Distance could not separate them and he drove countless miles to be a part of their lives.
As the big brother in the family he was always there looking after Gary and Andrea. He was a hero to his “ little sister”.
He was known by many names: Dad, My Big Boy, Hoof, Gruncle Charles to his adoring nieces and nephews, Hee-Haw to his precious grandchildren and Charlie to his brother and sister. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. He wore shoes that no one else can fill.
