William Munden Sawyer

Elizabeth City, NC - William Munden Sawyer, age 71, of Lot 1 Tanglewood Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, February 5, 2004, at his residence. He was born in Pasquotank County, NC, son of the late A. Ray Sawyer, Sr. and Bessie Munden Sawyer, and was husband of Juanita Smithson Sawyer of the residence. Mr. Sawyer taught in the Currituck County School System, the Camden School System and had served as assistant Principle. He also taught the bus driver certification program for the five county regions. The drivers he trained were very special. He also served in the National Guard.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Anita Lynn Gregory and her husband Mike, of Elizabeth City, NC; and one granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn Gregory. He was predeceased by one sister, Elizabeth S. Sawyer; and two brothers, Norman Ray Sawyer, and A. Ray Sawyer, Jr.

Funeral service will be Sunday, February 8, 2004, at 3:00 PM in Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp officiating. Entombment will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Lois Saunders

MANTEO, N.C. - LOIS CUDWORTH SAUNDERS, 84, formerly of Manteo, died, Friday, May 14, 2004 in Elizabeth City, N.C. Mrs. Saunders was born in Engel hard and was a member of the United Methodist Church. Lois was known as “Bobi” by all of her grandchildren, who wll miss her dearly. Mrs. Saunders was owner of The Drafty Tavern for many years.

She was the daughter of the late Vance and Ina Midgett Cudworth and was the widow of Gaston Saunders.

Surviving are one daughter; Sandra S. Webb of Tarboro, N.C., two sisters; Wilma Scarborough and Jean Daniels both of Wanchese, one brother; Louis Cudworth of Baltimore, MD, four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Iris Midgett.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, May 17, 2004, at 3:00 p.m. in Twiford’s Colony Chapel. Burial will be in Cudworth Cemetery. Friends may join the family at Twiford’s Funeral Home on Sunday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and at other times 406 Woodard Road Kitty Hawk. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Saunders family.

"Buck C" Saunders

Manteo, NC - Buck Calvin “Buck C” Saunders, 67, died Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Saunders was born in Wanchese, NC and was retired from the Department of Transportation Shipyard Ferry Division as a painter. He was a Methodist, a former member of Odd Fellows Lodge. Mr. Saunders was the the son of the late Ernest “Cluckie” Saunders and the late Eva Mae Midgett Saunders and the husband of Velma Dean Twiford Saunders of Manteo.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Wanda Saunders and son-in-law, Tommy McMahon of Manteo; one son Ernest “Ernie” Saunders and his wife Barbara also of Manteo; one brother, William C. “Bill” Payne of Virginia Beach, VA and two grandchildren, Sarah Saunders and Lance Lee Saunders.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo, this Sunday, February 22nd at 2:00 PM with David C. Miller officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Wanda at 102 Brockwell Lane, Manteo.

Wilford Saunders
Retired Farmer

Wilford Jonathan Saunders, age 73, of 612 Griffin Swamp Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Saunders, a native of Pasquotank County, was the husband of Marjorie Elizabeth Barnard Saunders of the residence and the son of the late William Dempsey Saunders and Margaret Lenora Palmer Saunders. He was a member and former deacon of Salem Baptist Church and a retired farmer.

Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Daniel Saunders of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Rosalyn Featherston of Tulsa, OK, and Kathleen Rhodes of Elizabeth City, NC; and two brothers, Clinton Saunders of Edenton, NC, and Chester Saunders of Elizabeth City, NC. He was predeceased by a son, John Marshall Saunders.

A graveside funeral service will be Thursday, May 22, 2003, at 11:00 AM at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. L. E. Stike officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Nancy Lou O'Neil Roark

Grandy, NC - Nancy Lou O'Neil Roark, age 64, of 114 Ferris Drive, Grandy, NC, died Friday, February 28, 2003 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Roark, a native of Logan County, WV, was the wife of Carson Jack Roark of the residence and the daughter of the late Harry O'Neil and Bradie Bailey O'Neil Roark. She was preceded in death by her step-father, William Roark. Mrs. Roark was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Carol Brown of Ottawa, WV and Cheryl Anderson of Grandy, NC; one son, David Roark of Grandy, NC; two sisters, Linda Kay Copley and Doris Browning both of Man, WV; three brothers, Danny O'Neil of Garfield Heights, OH, Donny O'Neil of PA, and Sammy O'Neil of Logan, WV; six grand children; and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday, March 3, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Poplar Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Benson officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 12 Noon until the time of the funeral service and at other times at the residence.

Charlie Sanderlin Roberts

Shawboro, NC - Charlie Sanderlin Roberts, age 91, have 222 S. Indian Town Road, Shawboro, NC, died at his residence Thursday, January 9, 2003. He was born in Currituck County son of the late Thomas Marcellus and Lenora Sanderlin Roberts and was the husband of Mary Ellen Stevenson Roberts of the home. Mr. Roberts was a retired Farmer and attended Camden Baptist Church. He was a 60 year member of Hall Masonic Lodge #53 AF&AM.;

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Nora Florance Roberts, and Linda Roberts Wood both of Shawboro, NC; four sons, Charles Fred Roberts of Elizabeth City, NC, Benjamin G. Roberts, Sr. of Hertford, NC, Joe A. and A. Norman Roberts, Sr. both of Shawboro, NC; one sister, Annie R. Fletcher of Richmond, KY; ten grandchildren and fifteen grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Mr. Roberts was predeceased by one brother, Charlie Roberts, Jr.

Graveside service will be Saturday, January 11, 2003 at 3:00 pm in the Roberts Family Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Madden and Rev. Charles Wellons officiating. The family will greet friends on Friday evening, 7:00 pm to 8:30pm at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, and at other times at the residence, 222 S. Indian Town Rd. Shawboro, NC.

Eugene M. McDaniel, Jr., MD
Retired Physician

Eugene M. McDaniel, Jr., MD, of 1947 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, January 20, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Dr. McDaniel was born in Martinsville, VA, on January 31, 1937 to Dr. Eugene M. McDaniel, Sr., and Edna Owen McDaniel.

After graduation from Martinsville High School, he attended and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and thereafter received his medical degree from Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA. After a successful practice in obstetrics and gynecology in Martinsville, VA, for over twenty years he established his practice in Elizabeth City, NC, where he retired after twenty-two years. He was a former Chief of Medical Staff at Albemarle Hospital, Past President of the Seaboard Medical Society, a member of the NC Medical Society, and a fellow of the American College of OBGYN. He served in the U. S. Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Claudia Saunders McDaniel of the residence; a son, Michael E. McDaniel of Raleigh, NC; a daughter, Sandra A. Moore of Martinsville, VA; two granddaughters, Brittany and Courtney; a step-daughter, Lisa Connelly, and her husband Dr. Charles R. Vance, of Durham, NC; a sister, Frances Owen McDaniel of Williamsburg, VA; and nieces, May Louise Sligh, and her husband Dave, of Signal Mountain, TN, Virginia Weiler Tomlinson, and her husband Walter, of Houston, TX.

A memorial service will be Friday, January 23, 2004, at 11:00 am in Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately after the service. Memorial donations may be made to one’s favorite charity.

Linda & Eugene McDaniel

Linda Faye Daniel McDaniel, age 59, and Eugene Francis McDaniel, age 64, of 304 North Highway 34, Camden, NC, died Monday, April 5, 2004.

Mrs. McDaniel, a native of Portsmouth, VA, was the daughter of the late Claude Daniel and Willie Clyde Hutchins Daniel. She was a Methodist and a retired Registered Nurse having worked at various hospitals for over 30 years.

Mr. McDaniel, a native of Long Beach, CA, was the son of Orville Francis McDaniel and Ida Marcille Booth McDaniel. He was a Baptist, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and a retired Environmental Engineer with the civil service.

They are survived by a son, Michael Lee McDaniel of California, MD; a daughter, Yvonne McDaniel Dawkins of Lusby, MD, and three grand-daughters, Ashley, Aleyah, and Alyssa.

Mrs. McDaniel is also survived by two sisters, Constance Crawford of Portsmouth, VA, and Lois Devane of GA; four brothers, her twin Lynn Daniel, Kenneth Daniel, Joseph Daniel, and Aubrey Daniel, all of Portsmouth, VA

Mr. McDaniel is also survived by a sister, Barbara Green of Lancaster, CA.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 404 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Thomas Roberts

Manns Harbor, NC - Thomas Wilson Roberts, 73, died on Saturday, October 4, 2003 at a Barco nursing facility. Mr. Roberts was born in Detroit, MI and worked at the Manns Harbor Marina. He also owned and operated a computer repair and sales store in Manteo. Mr. Roberts was the son of the late Charles David and Dorothy Evelyn Keating Roberts.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Church of God of Prophecy in Manteo with Rev. Steve Crews officiating.

Lois Ballance
Lois Morgan Morgan Russell Ballance
Native of Pasquotank County, NC

Lois Morgan Morgan Russell Ballance, age 85, went home to be with the Lord on April 28, 2004. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, on September 15, 1918. Her parents were Seth and Annie Bundy Morgan. She is preceded in death by two brothers, Jessie and Robert Morgan, a sister, Edna Tarkington, and husbands, Elisha Russell, and D.H. Balance.

She lived in Elizabeth City, NC, until her mid-30’s. She moved to Norfolk, VA, and resided there until age 65, and then she retired and moved to Altamonte Springs, FL, to be near her family. She enjoyed many family parties and her church work until her health started failing two years ago. She loved gardening, growing beautiful flowers and having two vegetable gardens each year. Before retiring she worked at K&K; Toys located at Wards Corner in Norfolk. She managed the lunch counter and was well known for her homemade soups and chicken, ham and egg salads. She loved cooking and people loved her food. Many came from miles away to have lunch with her.

She is survived by a daughter, Annie B. Baker and her husband Charlie of Altamonte Springs, FL; one son, Eugene Russell and his wife Janet of Pittsburgh, PA. She was blessed with six grandchildren, Richard Stangler and his wife Sharon of Heathrow, FL, Pamela Huggins of Spanish Fort, AL, Charles Lee Baker and his wife Lisa residing temporary in the country of Nepal, Brent Russell and his wife Heather of Pittsburgh, PA, Gena Williams and her husband Lonnie of Okeechobee, FL, and Cindy Russell of Dayton, TN; thirteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be Friday, May 7, 2004 at 10:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Haywood Gillikin and Richard Stangler officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will be at the residence of Richard and Barbara Thorne, Hertford, NC. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, % Axie White, 105 Rosedale Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to the American Cancer Society, 404 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Mary Ellen Meekins

Elizabeth City, NC - Mary Ellen Blades Meekins, of 1003 Woodruff Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC died at her home on October 5, 2003 at 7:45 PM. She was born on November 12, 1929. Mary Ellen is survived by her husband, William C. Meekins, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC; three daughters, Ellen Snowden Meekins Palmer of Charlotte, NC, Marcia Chapin Meekins of Whispering Pines, NC, and Jamie Evans Meekins Humphries of Marietta, GA; three grandsons, Charles Duncan Palmer, Boyd William Palmer, and Evan McRae Humphries; and a sister, Carietta Blades Haskett of Elizabeth City, NC.

Mary Ellen was the daughter of the late James Evans Blades and Mamie Snowden Blades and was a lifelong resident of Elizabeth City. She attended Sullens College in Bristol, VA and the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. She was a member of Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church.

There will be a family graveside service at Old Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, Morris Building, DUNC, Durham, NC 27710 or to Cann Memorial Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 67, Elizabeth City, NC 27907.

WARREN A. ROCHELLE

Chesapeake – Warren Arthur Rochelle, 75, died Jan. 2, 2004, at his residence with his family by his side. Mr. Rochelle was born in New London, Conn. On November 11th, 1928 to the late Dumas Waldon Rochelle and Bernhardina Swanson Rochelle. He served a total of 11 years with the United States Air Force and the United States Marines. Mr. Rochelle retired after 33 years from Elec. Boat & Shipyard. He was a life member of VFW Post 189 New London Conn., AARP, and Military Order of the Cootie.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Gabrielle Rousseau Rochelle; and 3 Sisters In-law, Peggy Knotts of Redland California, Cecile Walraven of Chesapeake Virginia, and Lorraine Hasenoehrl of Lee’s Summit Missoourri; several nieces and nephews; he also leaves behind his beloved dog Pandy.

William Rogers

MANTEO, NC - WILLIAM BARTLETT (Willie) ROGERS, 86, of Manteo, died, Wednesday, July 30, 2003, in his residence. Mr. Rogers was born in Manteo and was retired as a self employed house mover. He was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church and Roanoke Island Chapter of IOF, International Order of Odd Fellows.

Mr. Rogers was the son of the late Valentine Sykes and Rennie Rae Basnight Rogers and the husband of the late Mildred Basnight Rogers.

Surviving are two daughters; Martha R. Rogers of Herndon, Va and Faye R. Morgan of Ashboro, N.C. Three grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 2, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in Twiford’s Colony Chapel. Burial will be in Manteo Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Alzheimers Association Inc. Betty Sawyer Rogers

Betty Sawyer Rogers, age 64, of 1403 River Road, Lot 97, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, October 11, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Manteo, NC, daughter of the late Pluman and Lovie Beasley Sawyer, and was the wife of Leroy Rogers of the residence.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Rogers is survived by a daughter, Debra Dykes and husband Lon of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Leroy Rogers, Jr. and wife Elise of Wall, NJ and David Rogers and fiancée Karen Martin, both of Elizabeth City, NC; four sisters, Goldie Brown of Jacksonville, Fl, Ruby Scarborough of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Linda McPherson of Manteo, NC, and Bobbi Chambers of Elizabeth City, NC; three brothers, Elmer Sawyer of Wanchese, NC, Ernie Sawyer of Manns Harbor, NC, and Tony Sawyer of Currituck, NC; nine grandchildren, Stacy, Amanda, Lon, Jr., Chris, Michelle, David, Jr., Dylan, Mitchell, and Tiffany; and three great grandchildren. Mrs. Rogers is preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel George and Stella Clutts, a brother, Lockwood Sawyer, and a granddaughter, Jennifer Dykes.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at 11:00 am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Pastor David Mansingh officiating. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 pm in the Austin Family Cemetery in Kitty Hawk, NC. The family will receive friends at the residence. Ralph R. Romaine
Retired Aircraft Electrician

Ralph Richard Romaine, age 72, of 918 Bartlett Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Romaine, a native of Cooperstown, NY, was the husband of Shirley Harris Romaine of the residence and the son of the late Elmer Wallace Romain and Mildred Truax Romain. He was a retired aircraft electrician at the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Base having been in the civil service for thirty four years, and he was a US Navy veteran.

Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, Ralph Romaine, Jr., Ronnie Romaine and Michael Romaine, all of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Ted Romain of Knoxville, TN, and Barry Romain of Colorado Springs, CO; five grandchildren; one great grandson; one step grandson; and one step great granddaughter; and a special family friend Douglas Henderson. He was pre- deceased by a son Larry Romaine.

A memorial service will be Saturday, August 2, 2003, at 4:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Milton Brandt officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Robert Joseph Ross

CHESAPEAKE – Robert Joseph Ross, 71, died September 3, 2003, at his home.

Born in Norfolk, VA, Mr. Ross grew up in the Atlantic City area. He was the son of the late Otto Joseph Ross and the late Ethel Lee Morris Ross Spragg. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and was a sheet metal worker at NADEP. Mr. Ross was a member of the Moose Lodge in Virginia Beach and enjoyed putting together model cars, airplanes and ships.

He is survived by one son, Lawrence Joseph Ross of Norfolk; two daughters, Matea Link of Raleigh, NC and Mary Ross of Chesapeake; three sisters, Betty L. Commire and Sue C. Lasko both of Chesapeake and Diane Reblora of GA; and six grandchildren. He is also survived by several devoted nieces and nephews and will be greatly missed by the ones who loved him dearly.

A chapel service will be held Saturday, Sept. 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake with Deacon Nicholas Marino officiating. A visitation will be Friday evening at the funeral home from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Norfolk.

Herbert "Buck" Roughton

Kill Devil Hills - Herbert “Buck” Labon Roughton, 87, died Monday, August 16, 2004 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Nags Head. Mr. Roughton was born in Elizabeth City, NC and was a retired steam fitter. He was the son of the late William Herbert Roughton and the late Mary Frances Hayman Roughton and the husband of Pat Roughton of the residence.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Mildred Stueple of Fort Wayne, IN and Mabel R. Jones of Elizabeth City.

A graveside service will be held at Hilltop Cemetery, Colington, Thursday, August 19, 2004 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Robert Pitsch officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the residence.
